Ugh this book was a freakin mess. It needed a few more drafts and an editor with a hatchet. From being way too wordy to numerous spelling and grammar errors in the back half, it all added up to equate a manuscript that wasn't ready for prime time. The author spends pages and pages describing the most mundane things, from how a shower works to tiered seating to what kind of clothes a throwaway instructor was wearing. And usually in character voice, which creates giant blocks of speech about absolutely nothing. The plot was fine. It would have honestly been a better book if the main character wasn't Harry Potter the Chosen One (tm). The majority of the story is interpersonal drama and going to class which would have worked out perfectly fine if the MC was a regular student.

The main character Aldric was way too Gary Stu. His personality constantly changed to fit whatever the author needed for the next story beat. He goes from insecure, to the chosen one, to a timid doormat, to angry and picking fights with perceived bullies, to a doormat again, to angry again, to insecure, and so on and so on. Sometimes he's dumb as a brick (doesn't know what posthaste means in one chapter) and other times he sounds like an 1800s college professor (refers to his peers as "contemporaries" a couple chapters later) and other times he's suddenly smart enough to solve whatever problem they're currently facing.

What kept me hanging on, besides the morbid fascination of watching a car crash, was Kasumi. She was actually a pretty adorable character early on and she sucked me back in when I was thinking of giving it up. Likewise with Nadia. Both girls felt more interesting and substantial in their characterization compared to the lead even if their motivations were kind of one-dimensional. Sure beat "I'M GONNA BE A MAGE WHEN I GROW UP I JUST KNOW IT" anyway.

I. Hate. Jordan. She is far and away the worst character. "Oh, you love me? Well I'm just going to ghost you for 6 months and argue with you every chance meeting we have." Get. Out. I was honestly hoping she'd be killed off in the last act during a training accident or something. Instead, she gets rewarded for all her bullshit by being added to the relationship and then people blaming Aldric for...something. Somehow it's supposed to be his fault that Jordan treated him like shit for most of the book. And yes, I am projecting that I'm old and have no patience for games when it comes to relationships, and no, I will not be apologizing or taking any questions.

And lastly, can we for the love of literature STOP putting Snape into every damn magic academy/college book?? Snape Hydean immediately starts bullying Aldric because of a (later revealed) rivalry with his adopted mother by asking him advanced questions about class (the wormwood and asphodel scene in HP), is "greasy" (hellooo), pushes the students to learn a technique that seems like it will probably out Aldric (the sensing thing AKA the werewolf assignment in Azkaban), and then finally come to find out he's not really a bad guy because he actually really cares for Lily Lorelei and they've been friends the whole time!

As usual, looking at the ratings, I either read a different book or just have a lower tolerance than everyone else.

---------------
Some things I was mad enough about while reading I thought were worth writing down before I finished the book below:

This book is wordy as shit. I had to start a review 14% in (I normally don't make any kind of in medias review notes) because the author just explained what a SHOWER is and I'm fupping FURIOUS about it. I'm so excited to read 500 more pages of obnoxious explanations.

The author really needs to have their thesaurus taken away. A lot of this reads like a high school or college 101 project in which the student is afraid of being docked points for using the same word too many times. Or that same student trying to sound smart by using more syllables.

Don't worry if you feel like this is a Harry Potter ripoff. It totally is. There's several lines (and characters) cribbed directly Harry Potter, whether intentional or not. "The wand sword chooses the wizard mage!"

All the characters have appallingly tragic surnames that are portmanteaus like Ironheart and Bloodaxe and Frosthammer and Goreskull. Except one gal's name is "Taylor".

30% and I've started skimming to keep my eyes from glazing over.

I'm so goddam FURIOUS that after all her bullshit Jordan just gets to come back into the fold and everyone is acting like it's somehow Aldric's fault that she GHOSTED him and then when they did meet FOUGHT with him for six months. Take some goddam responsibility.

You can see my entire frothing descent into madness in the COPIUS notes I made while reading this book. Also the author put little "<3" brackets around the chapters that had sex in them and I'm not sure how I feel about an author straight up marking up their book for the sections to jerk it to.

I DNF this book around page 190, as it just isn't very good.

The MC starts the book off at age 6yrs old, the victim of abuse by his parents. They've never let him outside the house, but on a day where they have to go out he runs away and runs for hours before ending up at the gates of an orphanage where he finds a home. I'm not sure how a 6yr old that has never been outside can run for hours, and that's the first sign that the plot isn't well thought out.

From there, he turns 18, finds out his dream of become a mage like the woman that runs the orphanage has come true, and leaves to join the magic academy, and thus the military. His best friend and the girl he has a crush on both decide to go and become mage bonds. Yeah, looks like dual cultivation is in play on this one.

The girl from the orphanage already plans to be one of his bonds, and lo and behold, he's the most powerful mage to have ever lived, as he can have 7 bonds one day. And naturally, the kitsune woman that currently ranks as the #1 potential bond is interested in the MC because of his powerful magic capacity. So he's got 2 women already stating up front that they want to bond with him. The MC is being spoon fed harem members.

The MC is only 18yrs of age, and he's written much more like he's 18 than most authors write. In other words, he's not very likable. There are times he comes across as petty/snide. He spends class time daydreaming about the two women who want to bond with him.

The writing quality is poor. The author loves ellipses, those 3 fun little dots (...), but sadly thinks it is only 2 dots, not 3. The author doesn't use quote symbols at the beginning or ending of a paragraph if the speaker continues speaking. There was a whole page with 5 paragraphs that had not a single quote mark, but it was all a teacher speaking. This made knowing when dialogue started/stopped awkward at times. The book sorely needs an editor that will qualify for hazard pay.

Clearly I will not be trying to read book 2.

Not bad, but lacking depth

This book does a decent job setting up for a school fantasy harem series. The magic, school, and different cultures are all interesting and are introduced seamlessly into the story. Action scenes are well written, with evocative imagery and meaningful choices.

There are two things that hold this book back. First, the characters are often inconsistent without clear reasons. There are a lot of character changes that happen too quickly or in the downtime between scenes which leave the reader disoriented. Second, the author was clearly thinking of Harry Potter while writing and changed parts of the story afterwards to avoid similarities. I'm an avid reader of fanfiction and normally don't mind those things, but this leaves the world building with gaps and it's obvious that some early changes were made without thought toward their effects on the later parts of the story.

Overall, it's a bit of a rocky start, but nothing that can't be improved in future installments.

This is a decent magic academy harem book that are brought down by a annoying and frankly unnecessary LI that were introduced as the MCs crush and who according to her own words have a crush on him too, but she decides that the best way to get closer to him is to scorn him and proceed to ghost him for months on end. The only times they meet always ends in her screaming and running away without actually talking about her problems and the MC somehow still believes he must be patient and that all will somehow work out.

The other LI's are more interesting and are actual characters with their own thoughts, emotions and unlike the first girl the author manages to convey that to the reader. They also act as the voice of reason and try to help the MC to move on from the pointless drama the first LI generates.

Otherwise this is a fairly standard haremlit academy book complete with Harry Potter ripoffs for teachers and a main character overpowered to pointlessness whit the common sense of a 8-year old and still somehow always manages to pull some bulshit to get out of any bad situation.

I bought this book because I had read some recommendations about it online, and there is some good stuff in there at times but the author clearly needs some more experience. I will buy the next book eventually to see if he has improved or if i should avoid the author for now.

Author pushes too hard for this "Jordan" character

Bog standard mage academy harem story, light on spicy scenes. The MC is repeatedly rebuffed by a love interest, yet has everyone around him blaming him for not doing enough. It's ridiculous. She even joins a party with the MC's mortal enemy. Even though the MC already has a lovely lady, there is a weird narrative pressure to put Aldric with Jordan.

Good and Bad

I enjoyed the story but the enormous bs between the relationship trouble was frankly ridiculous. Like of course it will be solved right that’s expected, but for such a huge issue to be blown off like it’s nothing after its “cleared” really dropped the ball for me. Worth a read if you can get past that but for a book focused on bonds that’s a big no from me.

Enjoyed despite Flaws

[Some very very light spoilers ahead for the book]

This book is flawed but I still found myself having a good time with it. I found this book to have quite a few similarities with Ard's Oath and Aether's Revival between the magic system and the academy setting respectively. I quite enjoyed the characters in this book but sometimes the dialogue felt a little awkward. The romance was sweet if feeling more than a little rushed at times.

The book is a bit longer than the "norm" at 604 pages and yes there are 3 LIs who join the MC by the end of the book. That might be too much for some and while I would prefer less per book I do think an honest effort was made and can be seen to give each LI their spotlight, but one of them does feel more rushed than the other two. Something I appreciated but also found frustrating was how much the mc acts his age. He's 18 and mannnnn does he act like it. He quite often finds himself with foot-in-mouth syndrome but I believe he's a good kid at heart who just wants a loving family and to be able to protect them.

All that being said, as I remarked at the top this book has its flaws. First and foremost I don't think the author took a lot of risks with this book but one risk taken, I feel backfired to the detriment of my enjoyment. There is a plot point that goes on too long and while it has a satisfying enough conclusion, the closer I got to that I was feeling more frustrated than excited. As this seems to be the atubors first book sometimes the prose is a little awkward but nothing world ending.

Also this book badly needs an editor to go over it because I found many grammatical and punctual issues that while, didn't ruin the book for me, they were noticeable and I think increased in frequency as the book progressed.

That all being said I still found myself greatly enjoying this book almost as much as I have any release by a new author on the scene. Unfortunately one glaring narrative choice and lack of a thorough editing job prevents me from saying this is a must-read but I am personally looking forward to book 2 and more from this author.

This is a lovey-dovey warm fuzzy fantasy adventure that is only dark in the beginning when the MC's childhood was described. After that though, it was a pleasant journey through mage military academy life with a bit of relationship drama throughout. Not much action but it is there. The MC is obviously oblivious with how to treat women but he's young and completely inexperienced so it actually isn't annoying, but rather endearing. There were a couple times I was like "ah, my dude, that was the wrong thing to say, you'll see" and then the author delivered the drama. I really enjoyed the book.
The grammar was only ok - there were a lot of basic mistakes and the author clearly doesn't know how to handle multi-paragraph quotes which made it frustrating to read at times. It was maybe once or twice a chapter so I was able to ignore it. Mostly.
The ending was, unfortunately, not satisfying. It was weak, with the main antagonist being punished rather than killed. I also didn't like Jordan as an LI, she was simply stupid and annoyed me, whereas the MC was also stupid but he grew up a lot and great progress was made, but Jordan was just lame the entire time with no redeeming qualities, nothing to add to the harem. I took a star off for that. The jokes afterwards fell flat too. It was just weird, considering everything that happened.
I'll still continue the series, but I'll need to ignore Jordan.

I really wanted to like this book, but two things kept me from enjoying it. The first is everybody's insistence that Al is wrong and has to fix everything, no matter who is actually the problem. Especially when it comes to feelings; he has to consider the feelings of everyone around, but nobody ever has to consider his feelings.

The second issue is related. Jordan is a truly horrible person. But he is completely obsessed with her. When he tries to get over her he gets pushed to pursue her. It's his responsibility to force her to communicate. It's his responsibility to reach out to her every time she runs away and hides. When she treats him like absolute crap, it's his responsibility to go get her and make her bond with him at all costs, or the women he loves will leave him. So now the series is stuck with him being permanently bonded to an immature selfish person with less than two braincells.

If he had gained some self-esteem, told everybody that not everything is his responsibility, and dropped Jordan in the end I would have counted this as a four star novel. Unfortunately, the whole series is worthless now.

Outstanding and interesting new series, I was riveted

I’ve read many of these Amazon series. Some have caught my attention and some I struggled to get thru. I can honestly say Mystic Knight is the best of the best. Jackson’s writing style is superb, and well rounded, to be sure. I couldn’t put the book down, and couldn’t wait to get back to find out what happened when I did. The world building was a mix of so many familiar ideas but it was pulled off well enough to make you want to learn more. The characters are compelling and make you want to cheer for them, even at their most asinine. The magical element was easy to understand without being overly complicated. All in all, It was fascinating and delightful and I cannot WAIT for the 2nd book to come out and I hope it’s soon.

Boring

Slow developing despite a time skip. I thought the characters were shallow and one dimensional. Female friend unable to ever talk to MC for nonsense plot reasons. Male friend upon leaving with MC is only able to talk gay s#x and literally nothing else despite somehow being best friends with the MC. Absolutely zero zilch nada reasons given for them to be friends at all. MC should've announced he wanted a personality along with announcing he wanted to be a mage. World building is ok and the writing is fine but much of the story read more like checking achievement boxes than anything else. Even the beginning should've been dropped. Malnourished physically abused 6 year old out runs monsters while travelling to another town...? Establishing that low of a baseline for monsters and bandits eliminates any reason to ever include them in the story.

A very solid book from the author. I liked the premise and the story very much and it was very engaging as well. It was a solid 5 star book for me until i found some silly and frustrating things the author could have avoided.

Since i dont wanna go into spoilers, i will keep this vague. The author could have trimmed the book very much lower but didn't. The author keeps on saying MC is a jealous type guy but also saying that one of the LI is Jealous and he is not as well. The author keeps on introducing multiple unwanted issues with that LI that made reading them frustrating for me. Also, the MC never gets punished or consequences for his actions. Like he keeps on sleeping at History class but still nails the exam with Exceptional rank.

I will continue with this series yes but the second book is even longer than this one. Lets see how it goes.

Good but fumbled parts, left me annoyed at the end

Ngl, what happened at the end with Jordan, her actions, the way it was then completely forgotten about and then finally the way she was bonded has absolutely annoyed the f&@k!ng hell outta me.

That was a mad fumble. No way after all that should she have been then so easily exempted for everything and particularly the way she comes in and takes charge in the bonding after that $hiz? Yeah nah mate. Up the clacker with that.

Now that thats off the chest though it’s been a pretty decent book. Best way I can describe it is it’s got good, if not a great foundation, it just needs a heap of work on the execution of it all. And editing. Lots of editing.

Started strong ended ok

The first half of this book is fantastic, but the whole Al and Jordan thing got kinda out of hand in the second half and distracted me from alot of the other important stuff later in the book because I just wanted to get to the part where that was resolved. It's a pity because it was good stuff. Then, to top that all off, the resolution was lackluster. They should have just bonded right away. The story would have been better if they worked through each other's insecurities together. I digress, overall. The book was very good with good characters and action. I'm hoping the next one will be better without all that needless drama from Al and Jordan.

Other than the fact that the author borrowed a lot from other books. There’s just so many ways to try and tell a story. You’re going to end up writing something similar to someone else. That being said I think he over explained a lot of things. Things that have nothing to do with the story line. I personally think that the bullshit that went on with Jordon happens in real life. Just without the harem. The thing that makes me laugh is the sex scenes. Teenage boy sex fantasy bullshit. Maybe the author is overcompensating. I don’t know I just scrolled through it . Because it’s basically just rince and repeat. At least he doesn’t describe every time. I’m willing to give the next book a chance

this is the silliest and most clueless MC I have ever read a book about.

This is the silliest book I have ever read first of all, no red blooded male is gonna give up their childhood crush and seek out other women when he can possibly have his lifetime sweetheart. In my opinion in the book was written backwards secondarily the MC is so stupid. Yes, I know it’s a harsh word, but he’s stupid and totally clueless in the way he pursues or doesn’t pursue his childhood sweetheart. This is usually not my type of book but if you like Haram, you would like this book. Just wish the MC wasn’t such a dunce

Good, but needs editing

Was enjoyable to read with a decent story, characters, and pacing, but it's in desperate need of a proper editor. Pretty sure author just used spell check, as there's few to no spelling errors. Instead there are wrong words used, constantly misuse punctuation such as commas and apostrophes, and more than a few sentences that simply make no sense, like there was one thought for the sentence when he started typing it, and a second thought at the end of it.

Lot's of annoying things, it felt sooo long, the writing style was confusing and I just couldn't finish it in one go. It pretty much took me three days working through it in chunks. I have no idea why I persisted now...like all the plot points I was hoping for some kind of redemption all turned out bland and unsatisfying. The first LI's doesn't really get a happy ending, her persistent was pointless. The ending was just chopped off suddenly, was really jarring, has to be a web novel.

Can't recommend this to anyone.

Not a bad book, but absolutely not a story I have any interest in. Just 600 pages of teenage angst and drama.

Maybe I should have expected it given the academy setting, but a lot of stories with an academy setting are written to appeal to older readers feeling a little nostalgic; this was more triggering than nostalgia. Gossip, pranks, jealousy, misunderstanding.

Good (maybe even very good) for what it is, and if the above description doesn't turn you off I absolutely recommend it, but I couldn't finish it.

Very good story so far, minor editing issues/typos

A very good story so far with some minor editing issues and typos functioning like speed bumps for reading speed, although with it only being the first volume there's not a whole lot to judge it on for a proper review as that requires reading the first 5 to 10 volumes of any LN, OELN, Webnovel, Webtoon, or Manga to fully grasp the basic foundations of the story

One of the best new books in this genre this year.

This was one of the best new books in this genre this year. T be honest, when I see an anime cover I usually expect more of a light novel, fun simple read, without much depth. That is certainly not the case here. The story and characters are very deep and the writing is quite good minus some spelling issues. Not enough to give it less than 5. Can’t wait for the next!

Fan-flipping-tasting!

While there are some rough spots (spelling, wrong names, grammar) those are easily bypassed. The characters are fun and lovable. There are clear issues with immaturity, but the characters do grow and get beyond it. Some may find it tiresome, so be prepared. Regardless, the story is exciting and there are clearly depths to be discovered in later books. I am very eagerly looking forward to reading the next one!

Great story

Week to strong, coming of age story. That's my faverite kind of story. The story line was engaging and fun. Highly recommend to anyone who likes fantasy.
There were quite a few typos. I would like to see that corrected in future offerings. Still, I can't wait for the next book!

Fun ride with great characters!

This one was a fun story with some pretty good characters. The main character and the girls around him were well fleshed out. I hope we get more insight into Jordan in book 2. And the secondary characters were great as well. It flowed well. My only critique would be better word checking. There were a number of words that weren’t quite right.

amazing new series

This book has great world building with a very diverse character ensemble. The main protagonist Aleric is and player and is set up to have many challenges and opportunities. It will be interesting to see how he handles the trials to come. Highly recommend this new series!

Well trodden path, with interesting MC’s

The only complaint I have is there are a lot of typos and grammatical errors that I found in this book. Other than that I found it an interesting and entertaining read. It had a slightly similar feel to the Dungeon 101 books but this book does not have the LitRPG aspects.

A Great Beginning

This book is excellent, I truly enjoyed the characters, the plot and pace of the story. I recommend it if you enjoy the tale where our protagonist comes into their knowledge and powers. A great read, I’m looking forward to reading more about these characters.

Plenty of action, spice and slice of life. Only real negative I found is that the book had a few too many typos. Another pass by an editor would have made my review 5 stars.

very good well worth the time and effort

A few edits issues but well worth the read. It was easy to fall into the world building and character development. Enough plot twists to make it interesting and not to follow existing tropes.
