Charles Perrault was a French author who laid foundations for a new literary genre, the fairy tale, and whose best known tales, offered as if they were pre-existing folk tales, include: Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, Puss in Boots, Cinderella, Bluebeard, Hop o' My Thumb), Diamonds and Toads, Patient Griselda, The Ridiculous Wishes...

Perrault's most famous stories are still in print today and have been made into operas, ballets (e.g., Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty), plays, musicals, and films, both live-action and animation.

The Brothers Grimm retold their own versions of some of Perrault's fairy tales.

Riquet with the Tuft is one of Charles Perrault's lesser known tales. Distasteful as the message is to many, it would make an ideal children's movie. Unlike all the other Perrault tales it wouldn't even need 'a spoonful of sugar' to Disneyfy it.

The story is a nasty anti-feminist, pro-beauty tale with a twist. The twist being it is usually the prince who has to go through a trial to win the hand of the princess. This time it is the princess that has to do that to keep the prince.

Riquet falls in love with the beautiful sister without even knowing her. Her portrait is enough. He doesn't care she is stupid because he has the gift of being able to make his true love clever and witty. Which he does, although he regrets possibly making her more intelligent than himself. He also has an ulterior motive not revealed until the end. He ignored her younger sister whose conversation and brains had made her popular because she is ugly and what would he want with an ugly woman? The younger princess, finding her older sister is now the focus of attention says to herself that she appears to others as no more than a disagreeable monkey.

At the end, as a reward for being faithful for a year to him, the beautiful and now brainy elder Princess, Prince Ricky tells her that she was gifted by the same fairy who gave him power with the ability to turn her true love into a handsome man. So saying that, he is transformed into a golden, shining Prince. Perhaps that was his ulterior motive, he didn't like being ugly at all, didn't find that all his advantages overcame what he saw in the mirror and knew that if he could make this particular woman love him enough (by giving her what she wanted, brains) she would give him what he wanted too (looks).

And the clever, ugly younger Princess? She ends up alone, with nothing.

So what does this little tale have to tell us? That wit and charm may attract people, but if you are female and possess no looks, you aren't going to be anyone's first choice. If you are a beautiful woman, then that alone is good enough to capture the hearts of the rich. How you come about beauty isn't even important, it can be totally fake men don't care. Rich men anyway.

In many fairy tales the princess has an ugly prince to fall in love with, the best known is Beauty and the Beast. But I can't think of a story, fairy or otherwise, where the the handsome prince has to fall in love with the ugly princess. To try to translate that into a movie would be a joke; it is in part the looks, the sexuality of the female star, that sells the film. In any case, the media's definition of an ugly woman is America Ferrara, who is merely ordinary looking and, in the last episode of the show is transformed, into a sleek, gorgeous woman....

What does Riquet, Ugly Betty and all similar stories tell us? That beauty is a gift and a reward, and a beautiful woman is above all other women. They tell us that beauty without brains triumphs, that beauty with brains probably ought to play it down a bit so the man doesn't feel threatened. And finally that brains without beauty might achieve a lot in life, but will never get the handsome prince or the lead in a movie, these rewards are for beautiful women.

Is this true in real life? No. But it isn't common to see very good-looking guys with extremely plain girls. However, there are many exceptions, many handsome men married to plain women. People do tend to remark on it and there is a vulgar, funny expression in the West Indies that people say of the mismatch of a couple like that, "Must give good head."

What is real beauty? What is real love? Is it intellectual? Is it physical?
What if one cannot be enough without the other? Is this subjective? It was enough for the princess and Riquet, though only because they lacked what attracted them to the other. Would it have not been possible for the unattractive but sharp-witted Riquet to love the dull but beautiful princess if he was beautiful too, or vice versa for her?
Ultimately and quite simply the moral of this story is that intelligence and inner worth are more valuable than physical beauty. So then, how would we compare Riquet’s love to the princess to her love for him? His love is physical and hers is intellectual, making his love more improper or shallow, no?
But what about all the various ways to love? Riquet’s love may be shallower than the princesses, but they’re both strong and sincere.
In the end, after all, the two are gifted with a love that now has both. Perhaps we’re being offered the idea that true love is a combination of attraction to another’s physical beauty and to their mind and soul… since it is the attainment of both that sealed their “happily ever after”.

Very good indeed; the proof: Disney never has, and probably never will, make it into a film.

Moral:

Here's a fairy tale for you,
Which is just as good as true.
What we love is always fair,
Clever, deft, and debonair.
Another Moral:

Nature oft, with open arms,
Lavishes a thousand charms;
But it is not these that bring
True love's truest offering.
'Tis some quality that lies
All unseen to other eyes --
Something in the heart or mind.

mmmmmm

En alguien puede la naturaleza
haber puesto colorido y belleza
