BUT I DNF’D.
Listen, the idea was there—like, she’s risking it all for her sister (LOVE that), but to do it, she’s gotta go get cozy with the enemy. You know, typical “oops I caught feelings for my mortal nemesis” situation. Two covens, bad blood, Romeo & Juliet energy—minus the tragic death (for now)???
The premise? Banger. The villain backstory? Had me FUMING, but in that delicious “oh you clever bastard” kinda way. Vella, our main girl? She’s strong, she’s stubborn, and she’d fistfight a demon for her sister—and honestly, SAME. But girl is so stubborn she loops around to being a pain in the ass sometimes, and I was this close to yeeting her into the plot void. Still, I gotta respect the sibling loyalty.
Now this “Mors Dicen” thing? Hadn’t heard of it, which shocked me considering I’ve read more supernatural smut and peens than should be legally allowed. It was refreshing, though—like, shove new magical lingo into my eyeballs, please.
Enter Matt. Mage. Druid. Last of his kind. Tragic backstory. Blah blah Big magical energy—everywhere, if you catch my drift. Total playboy energy, which is usually my catnip, but something felt…off. Like the vibes were there, but someone forgot to plug in his character development. He was… boring as hell…. He’s got a revenge mission against the council he’s literally part of (love the drama), but I needed more. I was bored so much with him
Now, about the writing. Sometimes it felt like the author got distracted mid-thought, and the next paragraph was like a squirrel took the wheel. I had to double back a few times, like “Wait, did I skip a page?” But the movie in my head kept playing, so I went with it.
Even though I bailed early like 75% , I am weirdly sadly curious about book two—Vella and Matt’s spicy forbidden thing, her sister’s fate…I need answers, dammit. Just not right now… I’ll wait for everyone else to read it and tell me
