…And my app ate my review. 2nd time around:
Recommended, especially for young people who struggle with image or food.
Tung was very lucky - an ultimatum from her Dad was the kick start she needed to overcome her eating disorders. IMHO, that’s not the norm.
What I would say about Tung’s memoir is that while it seems light, it’s really sad. The problem is that:
she saw herself as a lonely, friendless island, when instead she actually had the support of so many people in her community, including her:
- friends
- older sister
- teachers (PE teacher/coach, regular classroom teachers); and
- parents.
Plus, she was smart and good at sports and art!
Much of the problem seemed to be driven by the Mom’s dissatisfaction with her own body, which she also projected onto Tung at mealtimes.
Anyhow, it would be interesting to see a
version where teen Tung is brave enough to welcome
her community in! Anyone on the list above could help her, as could a nutritionist, doctor,
or even an overeaters anonymous group.
Glad she’s safe and well today & looking forward to more books!
