One of the things I have long been self-conscious about has been fashion. I find myself very good at shaping my taste in the arts, politics, or hobbies, but the way I look and the appearance of my home & decor & clothing...I am at a loss, and am in awe of people who make it seem so easy.
As I set aside 2026 as a year I want to really self-improve on things I have long put off, design & fashion are toward the top of the list, and Berkus's book is structured for that. This book is not for everyone (it likely has things that a more advanced antiques shopper already knows, and if you're one of those people who look at inspiration pages and can only state "why is it so expensive?" without realizing there's a lesson of scale there, this isn't for you). But I loved the way he talks about design, ways of letting personality shine through in a world where HGTV shows teach you you're only supposed to look at things in a certain, very cookie-cutter way (not every house is about resell potential), and the very handy guide that he gives for different rooms and adding touches on a sliding scale rather than one big thought. The best compliment I can give this book is that I got it from the library, and now feel like it's so useful I will have to buy it for reference.
