Wolf Run

Rate this book
Mick is a lone wolf in all ways. He’s left his pack, he’s left his homelands and he’s on the road, footloose and fancy free. Well, at least until he wanders up to a fence and finds a little wolf running his ass off behind it. Mick stops to let the pup out and is stunned to hear the young wolf, Scotty, tell him “no”. Scotty's mate and best friend, Danny, asked Scotty to stay behind the fence, so he will be safe while Danny fights to support them both. All this leaves Mick’s fur standing on end. Maybe, Mick doesn’t need one mate to bring him home. Maybe, he needs two.

I read this book more times than I can count and I still love it.

I know this book has a very low avarage rating and no one actually seems to like it, but this book is one of my favorites and I'm not ashamed to say it. :D
This book is so sweet, so comforting. Whenever I need a pick me up, this book is my to go place.

---------------------------------

Alpha werewolf Mick comes across a wolf behind a fence one day. He is worried the young wolf is being held against his will, but when he changes into his human form and asks, it turns out the young werewolf is Scott, and the fence is so he won't get lost or hurt.

Mates Scott and Daniel were kicked out by their pack when they were young and have been living alone since then. Daniel is working his butt off at a diner, while flightly Scott stays home to clean and paint.

Daniel has been trying his best to take care of Scott, but it’s been hard for him. He works as a server at a bar and he shares his one meal a day with Scott.

When Mick encounters them, he immediately knows he has to take care of these sweet wolves. Daniel has been trying to be the alpha in the relationship, but it is clear that is not the role he is supposed to have.

Mick swoops in and takes care of both of them.

description

But now that Mick is there to take care of Scott, Daniel feels he is no longer needed. Scott now has a real wolf to take care of him and not someone who can’t even shift anymore. So Danny takes off. Of course Mick and Scott immediately follow him...

I really loved this. I know this is the kind of book that will get a lot of mediocre or negative reviews, but I am such a sucker for this ridiculously happy sappy stuff. I loved how Daniel and Scott were trying to get by before Mick comes along. And then we have Mick, who wants nothing more than to make his two wolves happy. This book is pure hurt/comfort.

This book gave me all the warm fuzzies. I just loved it.

WOLF LOVE GALORE!

Biting, licking, sucking, fucking, two-way, three-way, and every which way; there is a LOT of sex here. A lot. A LOT.

Plot, not so much.

The gist: Mick is a lone wolf who left his pack to wonder and search for a home of his own. He finds Scotty and Danny, two betas living on their own after being kicked out by their pack. Danny works to support Scotty and can no longer shift into wolf form. Scotty is more wolf than human; he's an artist, scattered but sweet.

The book is told from the POV of all three men, and the focus changed wildly, sometimes from sentence to sentence. The story is told in the present third-person, giving it an immediate, slightly manic vibe. It made me feel like I was inside the brain of a wolf, which is probably the point.

I was pretty charmed by these three men; they jumped into ménage à trois head first, not pausing to think or breathe. Danny feels like a third wheel for a while and tries to leave, but Mick and Scotty track him down and convince him that all three of them are a pack, that they belong together.

Human rules don't apply. No one need be sensible. It's all about feels and trust and mates and smell.

Some of the book was repetitive, and there wasn't any real angst or tension. But there was smex in spades! But I said that already, didn't I?

So freaking charming!

What a charming little book! It took me right to my happy place - both times that I read it. It’s a simple story with simple words. Nothing flashy or complicated.

Mick’s gone a’wanderin’. Once he was grown he felt the need to leave his Pack and roam the countryside. He’s been traveling for a while now. One day he happens upon a wolf running in circles behind a fence. He is immediately enthralled by this exuberant pup.

Scott is a cross between Buddy the Elf and Dug, the dog from Up!.

He spends most of his time fuzzy and when human he’s pretty much naked. Like, all the time. He and his mate Daniel were thrown out of their birth pack and have been living on their own, barely scraping by. They’ve been playing house for a couple of years and it’s starting to take a toll on Daniel. He’s so overworked and exhausted he can’t even shift into his wolf any more. Thank goodness Mick found them when he did. These boys are in dire need of an Alpha to take care of them.

I had so much fun reading this book. It is written in a way that just makes me sigh and giggle while reading. The author really got me in the mindset of the animal way more than the man. These men say what is on their minds the minute they think of it. For example:

Mick: “I like your belly. I kinda want to lick it.”

Daniel: “Not mean, more… keen. Hey, that rhymed.”

But my favorite is Scotty. Oh, Scotty. He has a permanent spot reserved in my pocket just for him. He’s so innocent and loving and joyful. Like a big puppy. Or, as I’ve mentioned before, Buddy the Elf.

“I like naps." And cheese. And purple. And snuggles. Snuggles were great.”

He loves anything and everything and is so excited all the time.

“What are we doing?”
“We’re going to fuck, honey.”
“I love fucking!”

Even when he’s pissed off he’s still the most adorable little thing.

“I just want to find him and bite him and take him home and sit on him.”

How can you not love Scotty?

This was a simple little feel-good story. There was about a page and a half of angst that was cute in its own right. There is quite a bit of sex in here but, not to worry, there's still a bit of a plot too. This is a complete comfort read and will forever be a go-to book when I'm feeling down. Thank you B.A. Tortuga, for giving me such a precious little gem of a story.

Mick is a lone wolf wandering not really knowing what he's looking for until he stumbles upon a young shifter using a dog/wolf run beside a battered Airstream trailer. In making sure the younger man isn't being hurt or restrained Mick realizes that he may have found someone he wants to make pack. The young shifter, Scott, is absolutely adorable and reminded me heavily of the dragon Tori from Stealing the Dragon, with his innocence and joy for life.

Scott and his mate, Daniel, have been kicked out their pack and Danny has been doing his best to provide for Scott, who at times is more wolf than man. The responsibility is taking its toll though because Danny can no longer shift. He's struggling to make sure the two of them can survive without an Alpha but Mick is an Alpha who knows a good thing when he sees them and he sets about wooing the younger wolves to pack.

This is a sexy story and a great menage that leans heavily on pack dynamics and feels. There's a nice angst level but it's not overwhelming and all the characters are tremendously endearing with very distinct personalities and needs. I loved this story and I can see myself going back to it quite a few times.(less)

I'm not one for ménage, yet it seems I somehow find myself stuck with some sneaky buys that I did to myself. Funny that.

Anyhoo, the werewolf premise here doesn't really make sense when it comes to the concept of mates and fidelity; it's a little loose with the rules. When wanderer Mick comes across mated Scott and Daniel, his instincts scream at him to protect these two young men without a pack. It just so happens they're open to having another mate. What results is some mild hurt comfort and lots and lots and lots of smex.

A bit silly, over the top, and unfortunately, riddled with my most hated endearment, this was still surprisingly, syrupy sweet and sexy.

Classic knight in shining armor story with lots of cuddling, licking, and loving. Everything was adorable and happened too fast and too perfectly, but still, I enjoyed it.

This book is sweet, sugary, fluffy goodness.

With LOTS and LOTS of sex. Seriously…LOTS.

”What are we doing?” “We’re going to fuck, honey.” Scotty laughed, the sound a touch hyena. ”I love fucking!”

Mick is a lone wolf who’s ready for his own pack. He meets Scotty and Danny who are wolves that were kicked out of their pack for reasons. The two have been alone since they were really young and are barely making it. Danny works hard to support Scotty and himself but can barely keep them fed on his income. Danny's even stopped turning into a wolf since he can’t be taking time off every full moon. Mick’s an Alpha who instantly wants to take care of them, and of course bone them as often as possible. ”He wanted to smell them, let them groom him. Run. Have lots and lots of sex.”

Mick constantly calling Danny and Scotty his pups, puppies and sweet baby boys was annoying and kind of icky, but I loved Danny and Scotty. Danny was sweet and a little insecure. But what really made this book so enjoyable for me was Scotty. He is just freakin’ adorable. He’s more in touch with his wolf side than his human side. This makes him so sweetly hilarious. ”I like naps.” And cheese, and purple. And snuggles. Snuggles were great.”

So if you're looking for some sweet shifter porn with very little plot and lots of hot sex, I'd recommend you check this one out.

I'm not even going to pretend: I read 'Wolf Run' solely for the werewolf threesome sex.

description

And I was not disappointed.

Mick is a lone alpha wolf, on the search for a place to call home. He runs into two mated beta wolves, Scotty and Danny, who are barely hanging in on their own. Mick decides that the two need him, and the betas are on board with the plan.

The bulk of the book is fluff. Scotty is a hyper scatterbrain, and his mates give him stability. Danny is a very serious person who has tamped down his wolf, and his mates help him loosen up. Mick needs to care for a pack, and his mates give him that. It's feel-good galore.

There's a hint of angst, with Danny feeling like the third wheel. But it doesn't last long and it's soon back to the fluff.

There's also lots of sex. Like every few pages. Refer to the gif above for my opinion on the numerous sex scenes.

If you're looking for some shifter PWP, 'Wolf Run' is a quick and sexy read.

It's hard to imagine something this sweet and adorable could also be so hot, but Tortuga manages it. As shifter stories go, this achieved the striking feat of having a bunch of stuff that usually irritates me but I actually enjoyed here, especially the big tough alpha who comes to the rescue of the lost tragi-boys plotline. It helps that the boys are so very horny--Tortuga makes good use of the boys'"wolf" traits to balance their almost childlike naivete with their tendency to go at it like bunnies. Mick is sexily dominating without being a complete a-hole, and Scott and Danny are very eager submissives. The boys' life scraping by at a dead-end job, barely able to afford the rent on their trailer, forced to split a hamburger for meals, feels legitimately sad without the usual (manipulative) piling on of misery after misery--dastardly exes, evil villains, insane levels of abuse that the poor sods need to be rescued from. Instead of that familiar stuff, we get a bunch of sex scenes. And I did mention they're hot, right?

Bottom line: Hurrah! a sexy shifter story that I actually liked. Perfect beach reading for this summer weekend.

This was in equal parts charming, sweet and hawt. There's very little plot outside what's revealed in the blurb, and there's a lot of wolf shifter mating going on, with licking and sucking and tasting and kissing and tongues.

But it's also a charming menage romance between two young, lost and abandoned wolf boys, and the Alpha male they've been needing all along.

How two struggling pups find their alpha.

Sweet shifter polyamory with an alpha who finally finds a reason to stop roaming. There's a lot of caring and loving and making sure his pups are happy. In between growling and wrangling his pups there's a nice emotional tug for one of the pups to find himself again. Sexy possessive loving and touching.

This is a story about three somewhat unusual wolf shifters. Mick is a loner; he likes his birth pack but has “itchy feet” and cannot bear to stay so he wanders in search of whatever it is he needs. Danny and Scotty have been kicked out of their birth pack as “useless" bachelor wolves; they are mates with very different needs and abilities, in desperate need of a keeper. With three such interesting characters, I just knew this story was going to be a lot of fun – and I am happy to report I was right. Very wolf-y, lots of fun, and with more than a few hot scenes of three-way loving, this story definitely entertained me.

*Snort* This book is a very typical mm-shifter romance, with a few exceptions.

The amount of times 'baby' or 'sweet boy' (and other endearments) were used, was creepy.
Scotty acts/feels/reads like a child at times, which was creepy when they were getting it on.
The "crisis", really came out of nowhere, since it seemed that Scotty, Danny and Mick became attached quite well. And the mis-communication seemed like a HUGE reach, and a 'crisis' for the 'crisis'' sake.
description

So Mick -a wanderer- finds Scotty in an enclosure, by Scotty and Danny's camper. Mick -the-big-bad-wolf- takes Scotty on a run, because that's how he rolls!
Meanwhile Danny is slaving away in a bar, to keep Scotty and himself fed and housed, since they were kicked out of their pack. Scotty is artistic and child-like, and Danny is working hard to keep them afloat.
But Mick swoops in and saves the day for the 2 tired wolves, taking them under his wings and stepping in as Alpha of their new pack.

This wasn't the worst shifter-story ever, it was just full of clichés and kind of creepy once in a while.

Back to back...back to back to front....back to front to back....front to back to back....
Yep.
An endless string of orgasms- That’s what this was.
I do prefer a bit of plot in my erotica. And this didn’t have much. It was...sizzling though.
And Scotty reminded me of a golden retriever puppy. He sure was cute!

Very disappointed. I was looking forward to a new, good m/m/m shifter story. I was surprised that I finished this story. I can't even say that there was an actual story in it, many sex scenes, but not really a story. Honestly if I read one more reference to "pup" or "good boy" or other endearments like that, I was going to throw my ereader. I found the whole thing very childish like and the characters immature and lacking any substance.

A refreshing take on a shifter romance.

I’ve read a lot of shifter novels. There’s always the strong alpha, his 2IC beta and sundry others. There’s nearly always a cruel alpha or pack in someone’s history. And, of course, there’s the discovery of Mates and a HEA. Wolf Run has these things but with a difference that’s refreshing.

The alpha hero isn’t as obviously strong as you’d expect. He’s a lost soul searching for a pack of his own. Scott, the beta, isn’t strong and decisive, just one rung below the alpha. He’s a ditzy artist with a sense of direction that wouldn’t challenge a blank piece of paper. The ‘sundry others’ is Danny, a man never meant to lead, but who works his butt off to provide for his Mate. He’s the real hero of this novel.

Scott and Danny live in a run-down trailer. Their relationship glows for all its dysfunction. You know from the first page they’re meant to be together forever, and you know, just as clearly, they’re floundering. They don’t have long before everything explodes. Danny can’t keep going the way he has been and, when he trips and falls, Scotty will be gone—not because he wants to be, but because he can’t function without Danny.

Enter Mick, stage right. It’s Mick’s job to provide the stability and security Danny and Scott need to keep them together, to make them more than before.

The identification of Mates was another difference in this novel, from other shifter stories. Usually, meeting your Mate is something that hits the shifter between the eyes so sharply every previous idea of life and love is completely overturned. That didn’t happen in this story. There was no emotional acknowledgement that Scott and Danny were Mick’s Mates. We were told it was so. That lack of drama with regard to Mates confused me at the beginning. My preconceptions made me question Mick’s motivation, especially when he had sex with Scott almost immediately, before he met Danny, even though he knew Scott and Danny were Mates. At the time it seemed to show a complete disregard for the connection Scott and Danny shared, regardless of the fact Mick told Scott he respected it.

Scott is absolutely adorable, although he came across as very young, often too young. His naivety and absolute, unquestioning trust made me worry about him.

Danny broke my heart. He worked so hard to keep Scotty safe but nothing he did was enough. Then in waltzes Mick, who takes over and makes everything wonderful with little more than a snap of his fingers. Danny was drawn beautifully.

It’s no wonder, with two such unique characters as Scott and Danny, that Mick would come across flat and insipid for the first half of the book. I think Tortuga intended Mick to be—not weak, but translucent—at the beginning because he’d been alone too long. He certainly grew in substance throughout the story and, by the end, was a protector worthy of the other two. Unfortunately his lack of character strength at the beginning, and his too-slow growth throughout, set my opinion of him as… meh.

My test for a book: would I read it again? Yes. Definitely. Even with the problems with Mick at the beginning, this book is so different from other shifter stories, it’s like the first autumn breeze. I know, without knowing where or what, that there are subtle layers in this story that I’ll find on a second or subsequent reading.

A review by The Blogger Girls.

Boy, was I excited for this one. Lone alpha wolf meets lone beta wolves and makes them his own pack. Sounds great! And it starts out pretty good! But things get sweet pretty quickly. I ended up having to struggle through this and force myself to not skim.

Things get repetitive mainly with sayings being repeated. Mick constantly reminds us he now has a pack, how unique each guy is and how much he loves them. It was a struggle at times, but I pushed on. There is a lot of sex, as in most of the story is sex. There isn’t really too much happening other than that, with the exception of Danny’s wolf issues. After taking on the responsibility of caring for Scotty, being forced to work regular job hours to put food on the table and pay rent, he has suppressed his wolf and is now unable to shift.

These three never really have any issues with jealousy, though there is a point where Danny believes Mick and Scotty don’t need him, but this has more to do with his inability to shift or provide for Scotty than it does over jealousy. These guys are so full of love for each other, jealousy never even enters the equation. Some of the sex is hot stuff, ok, most of it, I admit. But there is just so much of it that it gets a bit tiresome.

One other issue I had was the choppy dialog. I was often reminded of Sean Michael’s stories in this respect, as it had much the same feel. I found it interesting to learn from the About Author section that Ms. Tortuga is best friends with Sean Michael. Back to the book though, if you’re looking for a super sweet wolfie tale with a lot of playful puppy loving, cuddling and smexing, give this a try, as this may well be a case of it’s not you, it’s me.

From my review: "Some readers might shy away from a m/m/m storyline but it works beautifully here. Wolves are a pack animal and never have I read about two young wolf shifters in need of an older Alpha lover than Scotty and Daniel. Adding Mick Eagleheart to their relationship not only makes sense but its so sexy as well. Daniel has been trying to be an Alpha he's not and he's failing to meet not only Scotty's needs but his own. It's a poignant, loving, and desperate situation that Scotty and Daniel find themselves in when Mick happens along and enters their lives. Of the two young wolves, Daniel's existence is the most precarious. But we don't realize that fact immediately. B.A. Tortuga slowly leads us and Mick to that conclusion as their story reveals itself and more of their back history comes to light."

Wow. I really liked the way this story was written, it appealed to me. There was a story, but..... There was also wall to wall sex of some sort or another. Short and rather sweet, very little angst. Good to read when traveling( which is what I did). And did I mention the sex?

Too much? Too little? Or both?

There certainly was too much of sickly sweet endearments. Even the inner monologues were riddled with "Sweet baby boy", "pup" and "Good boy". Just to mention a few.
Too much creepiness with the too childlike Scotty being sexually active with the older gruff Mike. Yes, Scotty has sex with Danny too, but it's more icky with how Scotty's childlike behavior seems to trigger arousal in Mike. It seems like the more Scotty acts like a 5-year-old the more turned on Mike gets.
And finally (and I can't believe I'm saying this) too much sex. EVERYTHING is solved with sex. Are you stressed out? Suck me! Are you worn out? Let's have sex! Are you depressed and feel you're not worth anything? No problem, suck me and let's have sex!

On the other hand there was too little of some things I would say could have made this story better, acceptable even. A bit more character development would have done wonders. The only things that changes are the location and the fact that Danny can start to worry about other things.

Also, a plot would have lifted the story immensely. Yes there is an outline of a plot:
"Older, slightly creepy wolf" finds "Younger childlike, impulsive (magical???) wolf" penned up. "Oscw" insinuates him self into the lives of "Yciw" and his partner "Equally young but troubled, responsible wolf".
Sure there is two minor issues they have to get over, but that is quickly dealt with and they go on in their own merry way.

Sure, I've read a lot of stories with too much endearments or creepiness or sex. There are also plenty of stories I've enjoyed without character development or plot. It is however when all these things occur together that I object. It just becomes an uninteresting mess. The choppy writing style didn't help either. I became bored and even a bit irritated.

Part of that irritation was the fact that I knew this author had the potential to take this outline and write something spectacular, but settled for something less. And in this case less is certainly not more!

Simply beautiful

I have read several B.A. Tortuga books but somehow missed this one. I have to say it was is by far my favorite. Danny and Scotty finally meet the Alpha (Mick) who they deserve and who is deserving of them. Their story is skillfully, soulfully written and all I can say is thank you.

WOLF RUN by BA Tortuga is a hot story about wandering alpha Mick and sweet pups Scott and Daniel, who had been struggling to make it on their own after their pack has pushed them out. Mick can see almost immediately that they are meant to be together and acts to put that in motion.

2016, presumably: I enjoyed this story. It had as much plot as I expected from reading dozens and dozens of B.A. Tortuga's stories. I liked the characters. I like when an alpha character focuses on taking care of more submissive characters. I wanted to read something that didn't have too much angst and torment for the characters. This one had some hurt-comfort, but was more of a sweet read than anything else. "Sweet" in that the protagonists cared for each other, not "sweet" in the bedroom door closed sense. There was a lot of bedroom action, which, again, I expected.

Reread in January 2021. Back when I had read the story in PDF form. This time I read the edition that's currently only available as a Kindle book. Some of Ms. Tortuga's more recent books have more plot than ones originally published earlier, but I was still okay with there not being a lot of plot in this one. The reader gets bits of the characters' personalities and issues. Scotty did seem to have some mental damage from being kicked out of his "birth pack" when he was too young, and he hadn't been able to adapt and mature mentally. Danny did what he could to support Scotty, but Danny was worn pretty thin by it.

The trope of someone (or two someones, in this case) being rescued from hunger and other sorts of deprivation and being given a good place to live and enough to eat is a very old trope, but taps into a vein of wish-fulfilment that certainly still exists. In 2020 and continuing into 2021, there's been a lot of food insecurity in the country, so it added a touch more poignancy to the struggle to survive and get enough to eat. This is an age-old problem in real life, of course, but particularly noticeable in the last several months in the U.S.

Mick was happy to get a couple of lively young mates, and rescue them from poverty and hunger. He's a wish-fulfilment sort of character, for sure. But escapist reading works for me. Sometimes I read serious non-fiction, but sometimes I need a little mental break from real-life stress. If I had a "not high literature" category, stories like this would be sorted into that. But I'm not here to run down genre fiction. Ms. Tortuga and her wife (Julia Talbot) and other author friends of theirs have written many books that have good-natured protagonists in various trope situations I like. As I've noted before, I'll forgive a lack of plot if the protagonists are kind-hearted people. It's a reading quirk of mine.

Mick is a alpha wolf shifter who left his pack to travel alone. He's looking to set up new roots though, hoping start his own pack. One day he comes across Scotty, a wolf shifter caged in a small yard running around like crazy. When he offers to free Scotty, Scotty declines, explaining that he promised his mate Danny that he'd stay put while Danny was at work, since Scotty gets lost easily. Mick is attracted to Scotty and has a strong urge to take care of him and keep him safe. He wonders if Scotty and Danny might be the start of his new pack.

This was an impulse buy for me. I was very interested in the set up and enjoyed the excerpt I read. It started out as a good read, too. I liked the way that the men's wolf nature showed up in their human forms, too. Scotty's puppy-like hyperness was especially charming... until it hit me that puppies are babies or kids... and then I started having a hard time with it. I want to be clear, Scotty is an adult in the story. It's just that his behaviors are so child like. It just bothered me.

Also, I enjoy reading about committed triads. It did catch me off guard that there was sex between Mick and Scotty before Danny had even met or heard about Mick. That struck me as pretty odd, though it may have just been a part of the world building? Maybe this wolf society is a lot more open with sex?

Speaking of sex, there were many sex scenes and they were hot and well written. It did start to tip to the point of a little too much sex vs. plot, and the sex got a little repetitious. As the book went on it started to drag for me, and I had to make myself finish the last quarter of the book. There just wasn't that much conflict or much left to be resolved.

So, it was an ok read for me. I'd recommend it for people who like m/m shifters and a lot of sex.
