Umm...Did we all read the same book?
Where's all this emotion that so many keep saying this story evoked for them? Sure, the heroine's story is harsh and tragic, but (and maybe this is just me and the backlog of books I've read) I've read books that provoked MUCH DEEPER emotion from me when compared to this. Things were surface level at best in this book. Frankly, aside from the heroine, everyone else was one big blur. This story barely described the MMC's. It was a hair color here and an eye color there. There was no in-depth description of each. To top it off, after that barely there description, we only get a comment here and there for the rest of the book on one's eye color or hair color. At one point, I was making up whatever I wanted and when a hair color was mentioned, I just ignored it.
I don't care enough about these characters to read the next book. The world-building was pretty meh, and I don't feel all the emotion this story evoked in everyone else. This one is simply not for me.
Onto the next one!

**Ends on cliffhanger**
Angst = h is the town pariah as everyone believes she murdered the town's golden boy (one of her mates' twin brother who she never felt comfortable being around) in cold blood. h is suffering from a terminal disease that the reader is left in the dark about until later in the story. Everyone including her newly discovered fated mates treat the h like dirt. They all openly insult, degrade and humiliate the h every chance they get. h's pathetic father only sees her as a burden and can't wait to rid himself of being responsible for the h, not that he ever does anything loving for the h, but he is neglectful to say the least.
Omegaverse = h was childhood friends with her mates and they all hung out together. As they aged older, they all had the intent to be together, even the deceased twin (DT) who the h felt very uncomfortable being around. The DT would often make statements such as "my omega" and not "our" which made everyone uncomfortable, but was brushed off as no big deal. DT's possessiveness was not normal and was a symptom of bad to come...
Rejected mate = when the mates (4 of them) see the h after she falls down as she is at work in the town' popular and full diner, they all realize they are fated mates. They publicly and cruelly deny her and in effect reject her both in their minds and verbally/physically.
h sees Hs with OW = the Hs invite and crowd around OW at their table at the diner days after the rejection scene. Hs are all smiles and OW all giggles, arms around the OW and h walking past sees them. (Don't worry, h is not a door mat and lets her feelings be known in a violent way)
SA/R = Come to find out the true story with the DT and the h. Dt took h out alone for a picnic where he told her they would bond and would not be in a pack, just the two of them. h got scared and ran. DT caught her and proceeded to steal all her firsts in a brutal way. For every time DT asked the h to bond and she refused he forced a "bonding" bite on her...seventeen times. The bites are festering open/weeping injuries that are slowly killing the h. h will go feral then her heart will give out. h as tried to shoulder the burden of this truth for months but it all comes out to her mates. They go to her and it ends with h being hauled off to "end of care" treatment center with Hs watching.
Gut wrenching and now I have to not so patiently wait for the second book which come out the end of April.

In another life, I would have been cherished. Maybe I will be, somewhere else. But not this one. Not here.
I was unable to put this book down. My heart and soul were ripped from my chest. Everything hurts, and I don’t know how I’ll pass the time before part two is released.

July 12, 2025No star rating, because I DNF'ed. I rarely DNF, because even if I'm like, "this is bad," I'm also usually like, "but I have to find out what happens!!"
This had potential, it's an Omegaverse RH that's very emo. The heroine is literally dying, and the heroes don't know it. They're being mean to her (because they blame her for killing one guy's brother, when it's extremely obvious there's more to the story of what happened). Sometimes I enjoy intense angst, so I was onboard for all this.
But, it didn't flesh out any of the characters. It was hard to tell who was who very far into the story. One guy had curly hair. Another liked to hike. Those were their main distinctive traits. It was just like, names on a page being thrown at me, without their personalities being developed. So the angst didn't land. The only thing making me turn pages was the mystery of what was going on - what happened with the dead guy they think she killed, why she's dying. That wasn't enough to anchor me, when the writing on the characters was so flimsy, and the plot was undercooked.
She's also an EXTREME martyr to the point where it's absurd, and it's no longer emotional. She lost me, because her behavior made no sense. Like she's thinks she has 1 week left to live, and instead of relaxing and doing something she loves, she working a menial job. She also refuses to tell the guys what really happened with the dead guy, even when it might save her life. So, she's just passively accepting her death. I like a downtrodden heroine, but this crosses the line to making her unlikable - because she was more of a heroine who was just going to lay down and die. That's a different flavor of thing than just being a "downtrodden heroine." She had no gumption.
Since the characters weren't fleshed out, my curiosity to find out what happened fizzled out. I didn't care about them enough.

5⭐️ The way this book pulled me out of a slump and had me glued to my kindle from start to finish.. STOP IT WAS SO SO GOOD. Why choose omega-verses are going to do it for me every time… but add in fated mates, with a good ass plot with secrets, lies, yearning, friends-to-lovers-to-hate- to??? Ugh, my heart was hurting so much for Kennedy and all that shes had to endure and to know it’s not over?!!! BYE IM ABOUT TO JUMP INTO BOOK 2.

i ATE this up. i have one thing to say to my friend Colleen because i read this after seeing her review, WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME IT WAS SO SAD.
the last 10/20% were BRUTAL.

- omd : she assaulted by someone ( spoilers on who it is are in my review of book 2 ).
-owd : in book 1 Theo brought in ow to sit with them where Kennedy worked to hurt her and she sat between them which triggered Kenny to have an episode and weakened her ( again why i couldn't forgive theo)
- Same ow jumped at theo and hugged him when kennedy was in a " coma" he pushed her away and used her sent on him to trigger Kennedy again to help her wake up, and kennedy thought the ow was his new mate ( not true )

We are told the reveal pretty much halfway through the book - not the exact details, but enough. By Chapter 2 we know something big happened and our FMC's avoiding her former pack.
I really dislike (non-comedic) books where the entire plot relies on lack of communication - one character keeping a secret from the other characters, but not the reader. I also hate books that are centred around chases and nothing else. There's never any character development, since they're all avoiding one another, so it's all just one big pointless game of tip.
The multiple POVs and the continuous reiteration of her illness made everything feel so redundant. Yes, we get it, she has a terminal illness. There's no real exploration of how this actually affects her on a daily basis - when it's convenient to the plot she walks multiple k's, runs and knees people in the face, and when she needs to suffer she's in pain. She has zero friends or support system and spends the entire book angsting. Look, I have no issue with FMCs who are isolated for plot reasons,, but if you are going to do that then you need to actually have a PLOT.
I much prefer books that start out with a problem and then work out how to solve that problem, instead of having the MCs just... not communicate. This didn't feel like a romance novel at all, just an angst-fest that went nowhere and did nothing. There was one moment where I felt any connection between the MCs. For the rest of the time they barely interacted and everything was told through flashbacks.
I understand that this is Part One, but this gave me zilch.

Wasn't sure how to rate this, but I'm gonna give it 4⭐ because:
1) I have a thing for characters named Theo 😅
2) Finished in just about one sitting
3) Dark and heavy
4) High redemption potential for the guys
This gets right into it and it's pretty much non-stop heartbreak, hurt, and despair. If you're wanting a palate cleanser from all the warm and fuzzy reads, this is what you need. I enjoyed it in that it was dark, but it will only be worth it if things turn for the better in the end.

When discussing Omegaverse with a friend of mine, they said that they don't read omegaverse books because they are all about the spice and smut.
I told them that it depends on the author and the subject matter and that a smart author would take this theme to tackle a very sensitive social issue.
This book is a great example of my point.
Evelyn Flood is going to be one of my favorite RH omegaverse author. This is the second duet I've read by her and both were highly emotional.
Flood chose to discuss the heavy subject of sexual assault using the world of Alpha Omega.
there were so many social conundrums that were brilliantly presented in a 200+ book
the book opens with Kennedy, an Omega, taking the news that she is dying
the reason is because she was raped by a feral alpha, and not just any alpha, someone she knows, trusted, and was a potential mate.
his bites turned poisonous and because she was not mated, she is facing death by turning feral herself
not only that, she is being accused of murdering Brett without hearing her side of the story.
her four would-be mates were not there for her, did not believe her, and moreover, accused her of betraying them.
Kennedy is shunned by the community
Brett's mother is atrocious to her
this shows how many societies still put the blame on the victim rather on the abuser
I loved the writing style. The plot was fast-paced with many emotional instances that left me tearing up
I loved Kennedy, such a strong character who endured a lot but still faced what is left of her life.
The book ends with a big revelation and the promise of grovel from the guys.

Goodness I'm glad the next book is already out as I'm crying at the end of that one. I hope Kennedy can beat the odds. I hope There's Father faces some kind of punishment.

i did have fun reading it angst was good and grovel was also better than i expected ngl. i felt so bad for fmc my heart broke a little.

all of em are v i dont count fmcs SA, small/medium ow mmcs think fmc killed one of them (in truth he was a monster) so in one scene they use ow to make her jealous and laugh with her/make her sit with them (which annoyed me cuz both ow wanted them since high school so she treated fmc bad and fmc mentions oscar and theo laughing casually with her), also public rejection scene which makes me mad therefore i expect fmc to publicly humiliate them back IDC I'm petty, i expected at least one of them to stuck by her.
they do grovel with sticking by her through her feral ness but to me that's like bare minimum, next time they see ow theo also rejects her, they give up uni for her also.

Thank you for the ARC! This was a painful start to a story. I do feel like we didn't learn alot until the end. The mystery of her illness and what happened to her wasn't revealed until the men found out. A little upset that Kennedy still kept some truths from them to protect them. Whenever there's a "you hate me because you think I did something but really I'm protecting you" is in a story I don't like it. I do feel like we didn't get to learn much about the characters and their personalities fully yet. regardless, I'm interested to see how the story progresses and if there will be grovel.

I personally was not a fan of this book. Almost the entire book was spent waiting to find out what exactly happened to Kennedy. There’s a lot of teasing about the possibility of her being a murderer vs a victim, but it’s not something that’s really revealed until the end. I understand there’s a book 2 to pick up the story from where it’s at, so it may help to know that this book is just teasing the backstory.

If you like secrets, angst and future groveling then this book is for you. I binged this book so fast because I HAD to know what happened to the FMC. It drove me nuts seeing how everyone treated her so poorly! Overall it was well done and I can’t wait to read the next book. The MMCs better grovel A LOT!

This......this was so beautifully written. From the very first chapter this book dug its claws into my being and it never let go. A thick somber cloud hangs over, imbuing every page with a sense of foreboding. The author manages to blend the perfect cocktail of angst and conflict for grovelling. Every pinprick of pain, suffering and tension demanded to be felt and feel it I did.

It's been a while since I read an omegaverse that surprised me. It reads like a villain's origin story. This isn't smutty (maybe that's in book 2?), but I found that I enjoyed the smut free content a lot. It's brutal, though. Rejected bonds make a good plot device. Looking forward to the next book, too. Maybe I actually like reading again?

This book was fast paced and was easily devoured in one sitting. With that being said, I have no interest in the direction the duet took and I will not move onto book 2. The villain died before the story started and the “battle” to come is internal. Not my cup of tea. BUT an entertaining quick read for book one.

I honestly couldn’t care less about the mated bonds and the omegaverse, but I DEVORED this book. Literally finished it in two seatings, which is unusual for me. Short, intriguing and straight to the point - I need the sequel right this second!!

i need a good cry. this book helped. i was sobbing from the start to the end. in constant tears idk if it’s my hormones but this book was just so sad.
