Really good, um, I guess you would call it... erotic suspense?

It's not really a romance even though it does have a HFN ending. It read more like a really well thought out and well produced porn flick.

Smart writing, snappy dialogue and a plot! The mystery kept me guessing until the end.

Plus car wash sex!

I kind of like this AJ Llewellyn. This is a mucho-suave, typical hardass "Hands-up-mutha-f'er-me-cop-you-bad-guy" neanderthal kind of story. And there's this sort of sexy rough-trade-candy-coated-energy worn by this LAPD tactical badass-dude as he mixes it up sheet-side in some dirty criminal elements with a sexy-shiny Mr-f'ing-mafioso-studly.

It's very fast-paced and engaging..with some amusing dialogue between fellow copper-toppers.

There's zero romance. Instead it's more insta-love-via-lust-protocol factor..viva la hot erotic man-mance moments.

This f'ing series is all hell kinds of confusing w/the titles..so some assistance should you be in the mood to take the Laid challenge:

Good guys with bad boys, it's probably one of the most common pair in the erotic imaginery, but in this case, the good guy is not exactly so “good”.

Jack Cannon is a special agent of the LAPD. He is in a special squad, three men under his personal control, and basically he deals with the worst layer of criminality. But even if he is not an immaculate angel, he is not even the stereotype bad cop. Only that he doesn’t behave like a romance hero. Truth be told, I think he is not even an ideal gay icon, true, Jack is gay but he is not waving his rainbow flags. From this perspective I think his character rings quite true, I can’t really imagine that some gay romance cops I read before really exist in real life.

When Jack has to boil off a bit of steam he has a preferred way to do that, get laid. And the better place to do that is at his local gym. It’s there that he meets Lucky, a one night stand who becomes something more. Even the way Jack and Lucky meet sounds quite real, Jack is not the flowers and wine type, and I can’t see him falling in love for the first guy he meets. Instead it’s more right for him to go and find some willing bodies in a “safe” place. It’s not illegal and if all the men involved are willing and enjoy themselves, it can be also pretty good. So at first Lucky is only another one of those willing bodies, but from the first “taste”, Jack knows that Lucky is special.

I like the touch of romance that enters the story at this point. It’s not that suddenly both Jack than Lucky turn in perfect romance heroes, but at least they have a bit of reluctance in continuing with their occasional meet and hit encounters, when both of them know that probably the right guy entered their life. Another thing I liked is that all the sex encounters are nice, even the ones without romance. It’s always plain (meaning that there are usually only two, maximum, three men and their bodies, and nothing else) but good sex.

Note on the Series: In conjunction with Massive Studios/Falcon Films, this is the first book in a four part series to be filmed by director John Bruno for Massive Studios. Rob Romoni will star in the movie version of “Laid” playing cop Jack Cannon. Laid will be shot in webisodes for Massive Studios and then released as a DVD thru Pulse. Members of special units, be they crime fighters or members of a military team, are tough men who play as hard as they work. And Jack, the narrator of this story and a member of a new Violent Crimes Unit that is part of LAPD, is no exception. What he comes up against in his job in this book is pretty grim, but when the plot unfolds and all the additional seediness comes out I did ask myself what in the world some of humankind’s dregs of society think they’re doing. The result is an intense read, with lots of action (both in and out of the bedroom), and a storyline that will probably keep you on the edge of your seat.

Jack is a dedicated cop who is determined to fight crime wherever he finds it. His pressure valve of choice is getting laid, but when the hot guy he has an encounter with at the gym one night turns out to be the man he is supposed to tail and a violent mob boss, the lines start to blur. What follows is a very intense story about gangsters, weapons that should not be sold to the public, and dark machinations. The revelation at the end is set up beautifully and surprised Jack – but it blindsided me!

Lucio Natale, by the way, is a brilliant mobster, if such a thing exists. All bad boy, and with more dark plans than should be possible for one man, he keeps Jack guessing and had me biting my nails. He is one of those guys who made me reconsider my rule of never liking the bad guy….but I just couldn’t help myself.

If you like stories about hot cops who are tough as nails and like their ‘entertainment” to be as tough as them, if you enjoy reading about mobsters, dark plans, and criminals getting their own, and if you’re looking for a read that is as intense as it is hot and entertaining, then you will probably like this novella.

This story is hot -- there's no question about that. Unfortunately, it read more like a screenplay than a book (probably due to AJ's contract to have this story made into an actual porn flick). There's very little emotion shown between the two protagonists and they actually spend more time boffing other people than they do each other. I have no doubt it'll make a scorching movie, but the "relationship" left me wanting.

If you're interested in pure gay erotica, then this is the story for you. If you're looking for another hot romance like AJ's Phantom Lover series, you might want to skip this one.

I don't know what I expected from a book called Laid, but the MCs in this were basically fucking their way through LA. Hard to rate this one as there was ZERO romance, and yet apparently it's an insta-love tale. Also, a whole series of WTF? twists, not all of which made sense/were adequately explained.

It was hard to rate this because I did like it very much. It was a four-star read but in the end I had to settle for three because of the abruptness of the ending. It's clearly unfinished and did diminish my overall enjoyment.

It should have been released as a longer story or, if 2 books make the publisher more money, then at the same time. That way, if I didn't like the first installment, I wouldn't have spent more on the 2nd. But if I loved it (as I did Laid), I could have bought the 2nd one immediately after the first and not end up feeling like a victim of e-coitus interruptus.

Rant aside, I enjoyed Laid much, much more than the only Llewellyn I've read - Black Point, in collaboration with Manly. While I'd rather not have my MM protags indulge in a promiscuous lifestyle, in most instances, it fits in with the story. Laid is one of those that did come close to pushing the limit for me but, again, it was understandable because Jack is a cop and for some inexplicable reason, I give my cop heroes a lot of rope.

This short story really revolves around the brief sexual encounter between Jack and Lucio which, to Jack's surprise, ends up much more for him. It's sweet in that Lucio returns the sentiment and I did wonder how the heck Llwewellyn was going to resolve that huge obstacle of Lucio being a mob boss' son and is given the order to kill Jack.

So, a great blend of sex and suspense and I was right - while I get my requisite HFN, this story could never have been told in merely a novella. Maybe not even in a novel-length book. I'm now thinking I ought to wait until the series is completed then buy it as a collection.

this is really a four star but I have downgraded it to three stars because it was rollicking along fantastically with heat, plenty of build up of secondary characters, development of a mystery and then very very suddenly it ended. I felt most deprived.

I didn't understand why/when/how the main characters fell in love with each other. There was very little development with regards to their relationship. Not a bad story, but it's not something I would recommend to someone looking for a sexy, interesting gay-cop novel.

2.5 stars So this is weird. A lot of the reviews I read criticized that there is no plot, and warned readers that what they would get was solely porn... but I kinda felt the exact opposite. There was so much plot it was almost overwhelming for this length story. The blurb tells us that Jack is a cop, he has a sexy run in with Lucky and sparks fly, then uh oh he finds out Lucky is a criminal! But before Jack even meets Lucky we get a very detailed police raid and a ton of information about Jack's police work, his team/co-workers, as well as what he does for fun.

Despite Jack and Lucky both claiming some unseen connection, they actually only have a few interactions. They fuck, and it's somewhat hot. Then they have a date, despite Jack's reservations. Then there'a blowjob. Then there'a another blowjob. That's it until the HFN end. Not including two scenes of Jack with other people in the midst of this as he deals with his "feelings" for Lucky and learning about Lucky's criminal history.

Not gonna lie, a was ready and willing to read some sexy cop on criminal porn. So I was a little disappointed. The actual sex scenes weren't nearly as passionate as they should have been given that both these men claimed to be helplessly drawn towards each other. And I didn't feel any chemistry to justify their claims of 'love', besides the fact that it did not fit the character to fall so quickly. And how can you really love someone if you don't know them as a person?

Lastly, there's a shitty twist that, to be completely honest, makes no sense whatsoever. NONE OF THIS MAKES ANY SENSE! Not terrible, but it shoulda just stuck to the porn and not tried to get all cray-cray with intense cop plot-lines.

“I was surprised when he put his mouth on mine and started kissing me. I was even more surprised that I wanted to kiss him back.”

4 tough cop stars!! Sexy and dirty!

Jack is a tough as nails cop for the LAPD Violent crimes unit and he’s a manwhore, he sleeps with every man he can get his hands on, and well he’s not afraid to say so. After one hot hook up, he realizes there may be more there, but when he finds out that Lucio, is a violent mob boss, that he’s supposed to be following, will that end everything?

This book is dripping in sex and dirty talk. And I loved every dirty word!! Jack is a no nonsense dirty talker looking for his next lay and boy does he get it!! This is a quick book that you are sure to be entertained by. Yes there’s insta love but if you look past that, there’s a lot of hot, juicy sex!

***This is Exactly What the Name Suggests***
Well, I was sort of disappointed in this. It is quite short, and while there is a plot, per se, it is couched inside erotica between two characters that I never particularly connected with. Jack’s answer to everything is to go get laid, and when he finds Lucky, he realizes he’s got a seriously hot piece of tail to play with.

Unfortunately, the sex is about all there is to this. It reads like a bad porn script with a multitude of plot twists and random extraneous situations. Each scene involving a plot twist is depicted almost from afar, so it’s nearly impossible to forge any kind of symbiosis with the characters.

I wasn’t impressed with this one at all, and I’m rating it 2.5 stars, rounding up for sites that don’t take halves. Not my cup of tea.

Laid is a story that has aspects of a thriller and a suspense story with some smoking hot sex and a wonderful voice and fast pace. It has twists and turns and stops and starts. People who say one thing, think something else, and then do something entirely different. You see many characters in this book. POV changes from Jack Cannon, the undercover cop to Lucky, the mob bad guy and back again. You get perspective and understanding from both sources but are you getting the right perspective and clear understanding?

The pacing is great. The characters are, well, Cannon is likable. Lucky is a psycho but Cannon really falls hard for him. How could that be? A cop with all that training and gut instinct falling for a psycho killer? Maybe, maybe not.

I admit that I am the kind of person that sits in a suspense movie and constantly says “wait, I don’t get it” and then I have to hammer out the details to figure out how they really fit together. The twists and turns and resolution come hard and fast. I really enjoyed the book but when I was done I once again had to step back and say, “Wait, I don’t get it.” Even though in the end I didn’t get it and would probably spend hours with the author asking mind-numbing questions, I still really enjoyed the story. I don’t understand how that works out sometimes but I liked the story despite my shortfall in the brains department where the twist and turns aspect came into it.

Laid by author A.J. Llewellyn is a really face paced and steamy read. Jack has an extremely high stressed job being a cop in the LAPD violent crimes unit. He has to play it tough and close to the belt in real life. He wants to find someone he can love and trust. He thinks he found that person when he finds Lucky. The sex between them is off the charts and so is the connection. But when Lucky turns out to be on the other side of the law can he forget the one man who has gotten under his skin more ways than one.
I like how this book flows. It keeps that great pace making me want to turn the pages and read more. The emotional connection is very good between Jack and Lucky I wanted them together from the first moment on. I love it when I can fall a little in love with a character. My favorite in this book is Lucky. Lucky is more than meets the eye and I love character like that.
I would love to see where this relationship goes in the future so I do hope there is more from Lucky and Jack in the future. If you want a quick, steamy, and well done MM story this is the book to pick up.

I don’t know that I would call this a romance but more of a suspense with some erotic lusty scenes thrown in.

Lucky and Jim meet and fall into an insta lust kind of relationship. What neither knows is who the other really is but when the truth outs, it leaves them both with a risk to take but then the end throws in a huge curveball that to be honest I did not see coming.

The story was quite complex and hard to grasp who was who as all these characters were being introduced but then their real names were switched to nicknames and it got kind of hard to remember and keep track. However this short gritty read did keep me reading and engaged.

I do like gritty and raw but I think a little more on the romance side was needed here to give the story more depth and emotion as I didn’t really feel that reading between the lines.

Overall a quick and entertaining novella that just needed a little more oomph for me. Three stars.

Confused was how I felt over the course of this book. I read it, and I got it, but I had no idea what's going on. It's like watching one of those action-porn movie where you see all of these things happen yet can't string together a plot. The pacing was too fast, with too little down time nor emotion to support it. Rather than providing an adrenaline rush, it wound up with a jumble mess. The twist at the end was skim through so half-heartily they might as well not have it.

Looking at this book as a pwp with some actions then it was ok. Though the f-scenes weren't all that exciting for me tbh
