These ominous words given to the six survivors of a tragic bus accident are followed by an ultimatum: The murderers must anguish over their crimes and find a way to answer for them within one week, or the evidence of their sins will be given to the police.
But when every person has a secret, who can you trust...?
I really liked the way this started out. A terrible accident that killed a whole class of kids, 6 sole survivors, a suicide and 3 three killers in their midst. This was very promising and it mostly delivered. My only small issue was that since I have read the other series by Tonogai this one was not as horrifying and brutal as the rest. But all in all it was very satisfying.
I chose this book simply because of the bizarre and creepy cover image. But then I read it, and no scene like the cover appears in the book, either in image or tone. Instead we get a boring story about a bunch of indistinguishable kids who survive a bus crash who get paranoid and start turning on each other to try to keep secret what they did before and after the crash. Yawn.
This didn't get to interesting until the middle. But it's a fast read. 6 students survived a bus accident. 3 of the 6 are murderers. I'm waiting to read the next one before I really judge.
So here's the new survival-horror series by Tonogai, complete with people wearing animal masks (we're back to rabbits this time, after the wide variety of Judge). The difference is this time the story's taking place in the regular world instead of a cramped industrial space.
The story follows six high school students who survived a bus crash that killed all their classmates. As they're recuperating from their injuries, the psychologist who's been assigned to help them recover announces that he doesn't think the crash was an accident, and in fact he suspects some of the survivors of playing a part. Of course there wouldn't be a story if he just announced his conclusions, so instead he tells the students that they have one week to confess before he takes his evidence to the police.
Of course the presence of the rabbit masks in the story make one think of Tonogai's previous works, but apart from the general set-up there's no immediate connection to Judge or Doubt. Maybe something will develop in the future, but so far it seems like the masks are just a marketing gimmick to let people know this series is by the same guy.
But even if it's not directly connected to Judge and Doubt, the story still suffers from Tonogai's usual weaknesses, most notably the absence of cannon fodder. A survival horror story like this needs enough characters that some can die to demonstrate how screwed up things are without seriously affecting the plot, but here we only have six characters (well, there was a seventh, but he died before the story began), and one doesn't make it through the book. With five left, there's not much room for backstabbing and double dealing.
I hope the series surprises me, but after reading the first book I'm afraid this is going to end up as muddled as all of Tonogai's series.
A class on a field trip met their fate as they got into an accident and only six high school students survived. But is it really an accident? All six of them are on the spot as three of them are the murderers of their classmates and they're now facing the consequences.
I read Doubt by the same mangaka and I liked it! And when I learned about this short series, I was looking forward to read this!
I knew from the get go that they're going to narrate the past too. If anything, it kinda sucks that the characters weren't introduced properly. And two of the main characters almost looked alike, the only way to decipher them was one has a tad bit longer hair and wears a vest.
Given though, I am liking where the story is going. I like the idea that everything is falling into place as they unravel the story of each of the character. I am excited how this will go.
This depicts some cliche character tropes. One of which is an idol/actress. There's also a leader type, and so on. But I guess I have to accept that that's how it goes.
It's too early to tell what my overall reaction to this story. But I am excited to read the next manga.
Huge fan of Yoshiki Tonogai's other works. Doubt and Judge are two of my favourite mangas, so I have to admit I am somewhat disappointed by his latest entry: Secret. It's an interesting concept, but the characters seemed rather forgettable and they all seemed to just blend together at points so I couldn't tell them apart.
Unlike Doubt and Judge where the characters were held hostage in an asylum or something similar, this is set in the open world, where school students try and figure out which three of them are murderers. It's a cool idea, but I feel that Doubt and Judge's settings would have worked far better.
Hopefully this is improved in Vol 2 which I'll still pick up because I'd like to see where he goes with this idea.
I read Judge awhile ago, and when I found Secret, I thought it was the same story. It kind of is. Where Judge had tension and the sick twist of the group self-punishing itself, I guess I'm feeling deja vu. The difference here is that I don't think the "secrets" are going to be interesting enough for me to hang in there. The characters have no depth or backstories. I honestly did not care when the first secret keeper was revealed here- mostly because I didn't remember who he was or why I should have cared about him. The focus seemed to be on the idol-wannabee. Sigh. I'd steer fans to Judge instead.
I really enjoyed this manga. Picked it up on a whim as I was looking for more crime/horror mangas to read.
"There are three murderers hiding in your midst."
The story covers the tale of Class 2-D, most of whom were on a school trip when suddenly their bus crashed. Only 6 students survived the traumatic accident. Suddenly, they have all been accused of playing a bigger part in the accident. Now confronted with the idea that there is a murderer on the loose, the story follows the 6 of them as they seek to figure out if the crash was truly an accident.
This series doesn't start out as strong as the previous series, Judge and Doubt because you are told 2 of the 3 killers identities in the first book. but I'm still interested to see how things will play out in the other 2 books because i'm hopeful for a plot twist that will make things make sense. But as things stand the plot is getting confusing and contradictory .
I liked the authors "doubt" and "judge" series alot but somehow I kinda feel like the series are very similar right now. ¤Nice concepts that i do like but there is another manga "limit" by Keiko Suenobu that did the crashing a buss with students and what they do much better.
A bit like "lord of the flies" feelings. Maybe its hard to get into depth on this because its only 3 volumes.
Nice art. Love the secret element of the masks just not sure about the dialogue - shouldn't seem to flow in the most engaging manner but still interested in seeing the progression of the story and more natural feeling dialogue
Starting is a little abrupt and it's hard to tell characters apart at first. It's interesting enough, hopefully it remains engaging and develops. I don't get the counselor character's motivations, but maybe that will become clear too.
This was my first manga ever and I liked it. It was easy to read and it kept me wanting to know more. At parts it was a little confusing and the characters were a little hard to connect with. I did like it enough to want to read the next part though.
