Aka Helen Conrad and Jena Hunt

Helen Conrad was born on April 11, 1945 in Pasadena, California, U.S.A. and grew up between Holland, Guam, and California, and spent a few years in Washington, D.C. as well. She obtained a B.A. in English Literature.

Helen was working toward a Master's in Library Science when she dropped out to have her first son. "One look into those baby blue eyes and I knew it was going to be a long time before I went back to school. But with young ones, you do have time to read, and the more I read, the more I learned about writing". She started writing because she felt guilty about spending so much time reading. "Through writing I figured I could still immerse myself in the stories I love, but I could actually claim I was working! The amazing thing was when I sold my first book and the excuse was justified. Dreams really do come true!"

After years of writing romantic suspense in the style of Mary Stewart and children's books in a lot of styles, she finally sold a romance to Jove's Second Chance at Love and there was celebration all around-at least in her ever-patient family of husband and four boys. She published four more romances for Jove under the name Jena Hunt, then began writing Silhouette Desires. A few sales to Bantam Loveswept and Harlequin Romance, Temptationand SuperRomance under the name Helen Conrad followed, as well as to Harpers, Dell Ecstasy, Mills & Boon, and even an historical with Zebra. Today, she is concentrating on Silhouette Romance, completely captivated by the breezy fun and touching poignancy of their compact, to-the-point form. She feels the perfect "quick read" should make the reader smile, sigh and put the book down feeling better about the state of love in the world.

Now, she lives in the Los Angeles area now with Nick, her geologist-computers cientist husband and the two of her four sons who still live at home."Having the boys around helps keep me up on the current trends," she says with a laugh. "But writing helps keep me in touch with the romance that weaves through the everyday lives we all live.

There was no bride or royal appointment in this book. It makes me wonder why the author chose that title since it is unfitting. The story is almost like your typical Harlequin. She is strong and caring and more aware of the world than him who I could characterize as blind and stubborn. I don't think I would suggest this book to anyone.

Adam Ryder is the illegitimate son of the King's first son, who died 2 years earlier. He's called to Niroli to sign a contract to become the king, but he has his own selfish reasons for doing so - his production company is undergoing a hostile takeover and he needs bailout money. He figures he can flout the rules, take the throne and then take off to live his life. It's Elena, a young Nirolian woman who is blind, who helps him to see that there is more to life than money and business. She opens his eyes to the beauty of Niroli, the potential in a relationship with his six-year-old son and a life of love...maybe with her.

This wasn't bad, but I didn't love it. Rather than a dramatic or angsty HP, this kind of lacks that emotional punch. Even stories like this, that break the wrecky drama formula, still have some sort of angsty punch to them, but this one didn't really. I did like that the hero underwent change through the story - real change I mean. He started out selfish and I was definitely appropriately horrified by the way he spoke of and looked at his son. So I was surprised to learn that it wasn't a new relationship...that six years later he still saw his son as someone he didn't want to spend any time with. And of course, our heroine Elena has the magic touch with the kid. Adam's plans for the country were also pretty horrific...just come in, accept the throne and then drop all responsibility for governing to take care of your own business. Wow. So it really was good that he came around to realize the error of his ways. But it did feel like an opportunity was lost in that whole father-son thread. Rather than show Adam that his son acted up for a reason and that he needed structure and affection, Elena just tamed the child for Adam and then all was better for it. I didn't feel like Adam really became a better parent, just that because his kid was behaving, he liked him more, so they had fewer problems. Also delighted to see a heroine going after her dreams and not dropping everything to stay and be with the hero. .

Good romance, although the hero seemed kind of dishonest to me at first, but the author - I don't know - tried to make it kind of accepted due to revenge.....I actually adored the heroine as she was a really strong, smart, and talented woman.

Weak points though on the story arc though.

Four HP stars! (HP stars are always given with a good understanding of what HP is, and is not.) Misleading title and publisher’s blurb *BUT* a lovely story with a well developed hero and heroine.
Talk about personal growth! It’s happening in spades in this quick little book. I will look for more from this author.

I loved it all. The story was fantastic and the characters were great. I really loved the hero and his growth. The heroine was also written very well. I have enjoyed the House of Niroli so far.
