Well this book was one I had some interest because:
1- It was written by CL Werner
2- I thought it was in Orks perspective (if anyone could do it, it would be him).
The second point was not true but I didn't mind. I really enjoy the story about the remaining 37 soldiers of the Cadian 267th. They travel the toxic deserts of Sanzu and came across a Adeptus Mechanicus facility where a few isolated tech priests are conducting some secret research. There they fight a big ork called Morkanaut. The equivalent of Dreadnought of the Space Marines but with an ork within it.
The most interesting part was undoubtly the first twenty minutes. The ork attack, the toxic sand storm, the march throughout the desert and the discover of the facility. From that moment on was more or less the hunting of the ork machine or vice-versa.
Nevertheless a good story and a good conversion into a audiobook.

Imperial Guard stories are my favorite WH40k stories, especially when they feature clever characters surviving overwhelming odds by using their head. And Orkz always make for entertaining enemies.

“Morka, morka. Morka!”
I was very excited to read this story. I love Werner’s Kharadron Overlords stories and had high hopes for my first read of his Warhammer 40k works. Unfortunately, this one misses the mark.
I liked the opening of this story, especially thinking about how the pollution could be so bad on a planet that toxic man-killing sandstorms could arise. I also liked the batshit crazy techpriest. But the star of this story is of course the Morkanaut.
I came intro Iron Devil expecting it to be a horror mystery, but it’s just bolter porn and bravado. It’s worth mentioning that I listened to this story as an audiodrama and I wonder if the slow and formal narrator voice was what lead me to be bored. I also wonder if this story would have been better told in the third person. Lastly, I knew there were other soldiers around, but somehow it felt like the captain and sergeant were the only ones running around attempting to deal with the Morkanaut and everyone else was just waiting to get disintegrated.
I hate ripping this story apart. It’s not bad, it’s just basic. If you’ve read any Imperial Guard book before, you’ve already met all the characters of this book. And you’ll know not to bother learning any of their names because being a Guardsmen in the 41st millennium is a short career.
Skip this book and spend your money on some of Werner’s other works.

[Review of the prose version]
The Cadian 267th are embattled against orks on the ravaged planet Sanzu, but find themselves exchanging one danger for another when they’re forced to seek shelter from the planet’s toxic weather.
It’s billed as a 40k haunted house story, and that’s sort of accurate, but it’s actually quite a conventional Imperial Guard story, with a fairly straightforward plot, characters who are fun but not particularly developed, and a protagonist that’s rather spoilered by the cover art.

The point of view felt odd most of the time and the characters felt flat.

Disappointing. The cover had me psyched but there really isn't any more to this story than "ork machine hunts humies in big factory". It needed just a little more plot.

This one was awesome! Imperial Guard, Adeptus Mechanicus, & an Ork, what could be better. Well written and well paced. Very atmospheric.
