Now THIS is the good stuff volumes 1-3 were building up to! Yu and Mika run into each other on the battlefield and it is perfect. This volume establishes most of the main emotional conflicts for the story going forward:
1) Yu is basically the only thing Mika still cares about, and he will place Yu’s safety and psychological well-being above everything, including his own life. That’s because Mika hates being a vampire and hates himself for being “just another ugly bloodsucker”
2) Yu, on the other hand, is so overjoyed that Mika is still alive that he doesn’t care at all if he is a vampire. At the same time, Mika isn’t his only priority – he has a new set of friends, and there is no way that he can just leave them in danger.
3) Yu’s inner seraph is frickin’ terrifying, even to vampires and demons!
4) Mika is correct that they can’t trust either vampire or human authorities. Ferid and Krul, of course, always have a dozen schemes going between them, and Yu’s mentor Guren just admitted to wanting to use him as a weapon. But Mika is wrong that Yu’s friends are only pretending to care about him.
5) Shinoa has a crush on Yu. Spoilers: 100 chapters later, Yu is still totally oblivious…though Mika isn’t, if the eye-rolling expression is anything to go by!

Some of my favorite details (spoilers, obviously!):
- The blushes and tears of joy at seeing one another again.
- [Ferid] “I’ll keep the other humans occupied, while you go rescue your beloved princess!” [Mika] “Yu-chan, forget all of them and run away with me!” (Scoops Yu into bridal-carry and dashes away)
- [Asuramaru] “Mika is right. If there’s still time, both of you should run as far away from humans as you can.” Well done, wing-demon!
- Yu being so conflicted his seraph bursts out, sending him on a murderous rampage. Mika stepping in front of his sword (the specifically-designed-for-killing-vampires sword) because he knows Yu will hate himself if he kills his new friends. [Shinoa] “Y-you? But why?” [Mika, dripping blood] “Shut up, human. I didn’t do this for you.”
- Yu, even out of his mind, evidently recognizing Mika enough to not activate the sword!
- Shinoa, despite her doubts, letting Yu know that not only did Mika survive the encounter, but that the other vampires had to drag him away when the human reinforcements arrived, because he didn’t want to leave Yu’s side.
Auugh, my heart!

Now, for anyone doubting that Mika/Yu makes sense as a ship, I should note that I have read the light novels that confirm that vampires in this universe are asexual. But A) that doesn’t rule out romance in the real world, and this is some romantic shit right here! And B) the light novels ALSO confirm what blood drinking feels like to both parties and…yeah, it isn’t just a snack. So the way THAT bit develops going forward is significant!

This is the end of the 1st season and just as heartbreaking as I remember.

My Mika and my Yuu love each other and they have to be together!!

I still have mixed feeling about Guren. I don't know what to think of him.

And Shinoa... I love Shinoa but there's no way in hell I want her with Yuu.

Yuu is Mika's and Mika is Yuu's.

Finalmente Yuu e Mika si sono rincontrati! Mika mi ha spezzato il cuore! Non vuole che Yuu commetta un'azione che possa farlo diventare un mostro e odiare se stesso! E soprattutto vuole che scappi via con lui! Oddio che teneri! Spero il tutto non si concluda in tragedia!

anche qui possiamo notare innumerevoli differenze:
-quando viene introdotto il DOPING come droga, viene anche introdotta UNA SVEGLIA che serve appunto per avvertire i soldati dell’esaurimento dell’effetto della pastiglia e il consiglio di allontanarsi immediatamente dal nemico.
-nell’anime hanno giocato un sacco sull’attesa dell’incontro tra Mika e Yuu, molte cose sono state inventate ed aggiunte solo perché sapevano che intanto il pubblico avrebbe visto lo stesso tutti gli spin off e loro ci avrebbero guadagnato dei soldi 🤡 RIDICOLI.
-l’incontro di Mika e Yuu, per quanto continui ad essere empaticamente troppo superficiale, ha molta più logica rispetto all’anime con pianti, incredulità e shock, sicuramente l’ho apprezzato molto di più.

Much better. This one actually had stakes, and character motivations became more interesting, and dark background bits came out in the open. I actually enjoyed reading this volume. I was actually curious what would happen next. Not everything was a big surprise, but there were some surprises as well.

I wouldn't go so far as to call this great stuff, but it's much more entertaining. The sudden romance hints seem a bit much, and there are still a lot of elements to the story which seem kind of half-baked or overly cliche (I am so tired of villains and heroes who are insufferably smug), but this volume made me want to keep reading, which seems like a miracle after the last two volumes! Kudos!

Seriously, any love interests that are overly crazy with the MCs to the point that they could even destroy the world for have a special place in my heart. But this type of love interest wouldn't be endgame anyway... They wouldn't last. LOL. *sob*

PS. Ichinose Guren is like the hottest guy in anime/manga universe ever. 24 / 6 feet tall / Godly skilled / Already a Lieutenant Colonel. It's a shame he's not blonde-haired and blue-eyed, otherwise, guys, I'm definitely having a heart attack.
