Japan's most controversial anime series is over...but not the manga version of Neon Genesis Evangelion! Series co-creator Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's personal interpretation of the Evangelion characters and story is sure to intrigue new and old fans alike. In 2015, the "Angels" have returned, and Shinji Ikari, a fourteen year-old child of the new Earth, is forced by his father Gendo--commander of the secret organization NERV--to pilot the monstrous biomechanical weapon called "Evangelion" to match the Angels' fearsome power...

The Third Impact has come. As the unbelievably massive form of Ayanami towers over the Earth, the Instrumentality Project enters its last stages. While the world shudders in terror as it is engulfed in a sea of LCL, Shinji's consciousness merges with Lilith';s, and he searches his memories for a final understanding of himself and the fate of humanity.

That was quite a huge weight lifted off my chest—still, I think I need some time alone with my mind.

I will do my best. I will find my own path. It may be rough and winding... with driving wind and rain... and somedays may be freezing cold... but I know the sun will light the way.

Also, I love how it was endless nothingness when Shinji wished to relieve the world of its suffering. And when he took everything back to protect humanity's happiness, the transformed Rei bursts out to be scattering, showering snow (symbolizing loneliness, if not isolation or grief) like it takes feeling sadness to get to know happiness. After all, the sun will always push its way in, even in the tiniest hole of an abandoned, dark, gloomy room. My god, I'm crying once again. It was just so poetic, I love Shinji's dramatic voice and the final sequence just grips your heart and really makes you feel something. I expected it to be brutal and disgusting but I was really shocked at how it turned out. I just love this. It's really something. Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (co-creator of the animated series and author of this manga series) really did a great job in giving his personal view of the story.

And I remember getting so furious with Commander Ikari on the previous volume, but what do you know, even his death literally made me cry... especially his conversation with Yui. That was just so tragic.

Also, I loved how it completely trashed all my theories. It was unbelievably unexpected (lol, the first death still made me furious, and yea, I never saw the anime. I might check it out but not today...) but I enjoyed everything, although I seriously needed to stop for a couple of hours to regain my damaged soul like Asuka.

They told me that it is one messed up manga. After finishing the original anime, I was confused as hell. Then manga finished and additionally I saw the movie "End of Evangelion" and.. Why, God, they couldn't make an actual finished, satisfying ending or at least the ending that could be understood! That gave me a headache..

I am going to list my reasons why I liked the manga, then begin ranting about messed up things:

1. The story was complex and I love complex storylines. It was my second post-apocalyptic manga, and first mecha manga, and I am pleased with the story, the events. The disaster, the causes and consequences was interesting and complicated but on the negative note, it was not explained enough. I read fan theories and additional explanations for understanding it. However, it doesn't reduce the geniusness of the story.

2. The underlying themes mainly I liked how Shinji's depression was demonstrated in the story. I never hated Shinji for being weak, self-loathed or depressed, because it is somehow the feeling everyone gets in a while and it is a real thing. Shinji was real, depression was real, and I understood his motivations.
The theme of Christianity, religion, the beginning and the end of the world was fascinating. I liked the idea of two life seeds and human instrumentality project and all. I am a sucker for these things.
The mother-child theme was especially my favorite, that how Evas contained the souls of their mothers and the inside was like the womb, how primordial soup and life source themes collide together, those were fantastic!

3. Characters The characters were perfectly imperfect. I mean, look at Shinji who hates himself, passive, coward, but also caring, sensitive, nice towards people, and could be much better person if those messed up things didn't happen to him.
Asuka hot-headed, rude, confident and overachieving girl and Misato professional at work, carefree at home , were my favorite female characters in the manga. I didn't particularly like Rei mainly because Rei was underdeveloped as she was a clone. Gendo could be the second worst father figure after Oz Bezarius' father (Pandora Hearts). I liked Ritsuko, Kaji, Toji, Aida, Yui, a bit Nagisa . I mentioned these characters because they are worth mentioning.
4. The art was clean and nice. It was easy to read pictures and imagine what happened.

Now, on the negative side:
1. I hated how the story was confusing and wasn't explained enough. The information was scattered through the story and never given in a whole and simple way. The ending was different in anime and manga and it made me frustrated. It didn't make sense in both versions, while in manga it was on a positive tone, it was unexplained and in anime, it was somehow explained but was depressing and sad. I am glad that the manga wasn't too long because if it was 20 + volumes, I would be extremely mad that I spent my time for a messed up ending like that ( Looking at you, Tsubasa Reservoir chronicles) I gave up on explanation, I'll interpret my own story.

2. There was many things that was disturbing. Some symbolism was overdone, there were too many sexual references/symbolism, some nudity (some of them was reasonable though) and emotionally it left me drained. It was good psychological manga that made me cry, ask why, think metaphorical and made philosophical discussion within myself but again, the ending was wtf.

So, it became one of my favorite stories (excluding the ending) and it gave me some ideas in my own writing too. Thus, I am glad that I started this manga in the first place!

NEON GENESIS EVANGELION n 14

Devo ancora riordinare le idee. Questo manga mi ha devastato. È stato dolore e gioia. Profetico e geniale. Pieno di colpi di scena e intenso. Bello davvero. Finale tra una lacrima e un sorriso. Sono contenta di averlo finalmente letto tutto. Meraviglioso ❤️️. Posso solo dire leggetelo.

Honestly this series was very confusing. I felt like I understood what was going on through the series but at the same time I had no clue what they were saying. Honestly I found the ending not very satisfying. I feel the ending didn’t bring the story justice. Ayanami was probably the most mind-boggling character I’ve ever seen (?). This story was pretty good though! I feel that near the end every thing just kept getting more and more confusing 😵‍💫. But this book was definitely a solid 3.5 stars but Goodreads doesn’t do decimals so im giving it a 3.

Definitelly a must read for fans of the show. It really encapsulates the essence of the anime and brings more depth to the table.
It's the perfect ending because it stands in balance between the anime original ending and EoE.
All in all, it made me appreciate NGE even more than before.

aaaa i finished !! this is the first manga series i've ever finished and it made me so emotional. my favorite things about evangelion were it's characters and the relationships and deep feelings that they had, shinji was definitely my favorite character

*plot, writing, artwork*

the plot developed in a very interesting way, i loved the concept of angels and the evas and i was always so invested everytime misato or kaji revealed information to shinji, i felt exactly like him.

the manga was really poetic at times and that's what i loved the most, i wasn't expecting such beautiful writing. the artwork was also stunning, i wanted to keep every single panel in my head.

*characters*

as i said before, shinji was my favorite character. i think in the manga you get to understand him better because he's more vocal about his feelings. he said to misato multiple times how hurt he was by his dad, shinji only wanted appreciation from him (and at first, that was his only drive to get into the eva) — it was beautiful to see shinji make friends and start to care for other people (misato, toji, rei, asuka, kaworu) and it hurt even more to see him lose them one by one :( he deserved a hug

apart from shinji, my two other favorite characters were kaji and misato. they are my parents and i love them very much 🧍‍♂️

*ending*

i've heard many times that the ending is very confusing so that's what i was expecting, but i think in the manga it's more understandable. i loved the ultimate decision that shinji took of saving humanity and realizing humanity's worth and potential, those scenes were the most beautiful ones in the series.

***

i'm so excited to watch the anime and the rebuild movies !!!

This is the end of the manga. And it is a far less cynical conclusion than we got with the anime. I've really enjoyed reading these and seeing the plotting and characterization changes between the original story told in the anime and the manga. That being said, this volume contains a basic remix of the bulk of the navel-gazing from End of Evangelion. Interesting and subtle alterations but the bones of the same tale are there.

So I have finally finished it. It is kind of funny if you think about it. It took him 19 years to finish this series and it took me 2 days to finish it. I could have finished it earlier if it weren't for the world cup. Comics takes very little time to finish, kind of disappointing.

It is not much different from the anime series. I expected more difference like rebuild series I guess. However, the ending is more different from the anime series and more detailed than End of Evangelion.

I particularly didn't like the characters growth in the manga. Specially Shinji, his character growth is very inconsistent. At least in the anime he was always a vulnerable character. I can understand his mental breakdowns, his continuous downward spiraling. However in here he is not that weak. I thought he would show some intent, some strength, like he showed in the 2nd movie in the rebuild series. So it was rather disappointing to see that in the latter part of the manga his character changed very abruptly and became exactly like the End of Evangelion. See this is the most disappointing thing of this manga, while characters acts differently from their anime part in beginning Volumes, in the end their characters changed abruptly and became same like in the anime.

On the other hand, most characters are more fleshed out, there past is explored more in depth. But what I liked most was the exploration of some of the answered questions about nerv, seele, human instrumentality project. Yes, some questions are still unanswered. This is the strength of the manga, not the character growth. The anime is more of a character study (breakdown of Asuka was rather mind-blowing, also more horrifying) neglecting the plot, While the manga's plot is more well structured.

Another thing this manga series has done well is the ending which while the manga more or less follow the path of the End of Evangelion, even though I didn't exactly like the way it was ended, it was a proper ending. Unlike the anime series which had like a totally WTF ending and the alternate ending in the End of Evangelion, although it was much better than the anime, that still left me hanging for something more.

Evangelion is not an easy series. I’m not saying that it’s too deep/complex for readers to understand, or that it’s only for a subset of people. In fact, I sincerely think that NGE is a series meant for everyone that everyone has the capability of enjoying. heck, even my high school physics teacher said that this was her favorite series growing up. (love u, high school physics teacher!)

But Neon Genesis Evangelion bites at your core. At risk of sounding pedantic, I will say this: it understands what it means to be alive, to make mistakes, and to know another human person. It explores the intricacies and bluntness of humanity through the lens of a totally absurd (yet totally engrossing and believable???) event. The characters are so blindingly real that I’m shocked that I didn’t evaporate upon grasping their personalities.

Reading Evangelion from start to finish, I was entranced, just as I was when I first watched the series. I liked all the little changes from the anime and the author’s notes/extras at the end of each volume. Evangelion’s always going to have a special place in my heart. I’m glad I read the manga.

What sticks out the most to me about this series is its melancholy rather than its symbolism. 😓

Those situations and the actions of the characters create loneliness. They went one by one. 😭

And that ending is kind of bittersweet. 🥲

Consigliatissimo!

Hello reader, been a long time  Fyuuh… finally I have the time to make this manga review. The reason for the delay of this review was because I am slightly fearful this review will not adequately express how freaking good this manga is! ! FYI this is my first time reading a mecha and post-apocalyptic manga genre. My friend who is a diehard fan of Eva successfully convinced me there romance within this manga and thus I reluctantly agreed to read it. Oh lord! The truth is, no romance detected, however amazingly enough I was drawn into the characters and it didn’t matter whether there was or there wasn’t romance in it.

The main-series Neon Genesis Evangelion manga started running in Japan in 1995, towards the end of the anime production. English translations started being released in 2004, and both languages completed their fourteen volumes run between late 2014 and early 2015.

At first, I was a bit under pressure when I read this manga because I am a novella reader, not a graphic book reader. I am not a multitasked person therefore I can’t focus on the graphics and on the dialogue at the same time. It was without a doubt slowed me down whilst consuming this manga. However, by the time I reached volume three I had gotten fairly used to the concept of reading and taking in the images at the same time. This manga clearly illustrated the fight scenes depicted in it. The heroic acts and the robotic fight to save the world were done incredibly well. But for me though, I felt what it really portrayed was about a boy’s struggles to learn how to deal with other people—a character’s observation and study of the double-edged sword of loneliness and companionship. The author did an amazing job illustrating how complex each and every character truly is within the manga and due to that unconsciously made me gloomy and depressed on bright days when I had no reason to be depressed. This goes to show how wonderful the author was at drawing up those emotions within the reader.

The characters of Evangelion struggle with their interpersonal relationships, their personal problems, and traumatic events in their past. These are brief explanation some of the main character :

Shinji Ikari is the series protagonist and the designated pilot of Evangelion Unit-01. After witnessing his mother Yui Ikari's death as a child, Shinji was abandoned by his father, Gendo Ikari. He is emotionally hyper-sensitive and sometimes does as expected out of fear of rejection, but he has often rebelled and refused to pilot the Eva because of the extremely excruciating harm that has been done to him, or done to his friends (source:Wikipedia)
Asuka Langley Soryu is a child prodigy who pilots Evangelion Unit-02 and possesses a fiery temper and an overabundance of pride and self-confidence, which often gets her in trouble and difficulty, especially during battles. As a little girl, Asuka discovered the body of her mother shortly after she committed suicide, leading the child to repress her emotions and vow never to cry. (Source:Wikipedia)
Misato Katsuragi is the caretaker and commanding officer for Shinji and Asuka. Her professional demeanor at NERV contrasts dramatically with her carefree and irresponsible behavior at home. Misato has an Electra complex and is consumed with conflicting love and hate for her father. (Souce:Wikipedia)
The withdrawn and mysterious pilot of Evangelion Unit-00, Rei Ayanami (Source:Wikipedia)

The plot itself was so amazingly built up. It built little by little until you were so absorbed emotionally in the story that it keeps turning page after page. I have to say it was amazeball! and I cried a lot T__T

My final thought is this manga is worth a read! It looks like they show you nothing explicitly, but believe me they show you everything implicitly! You may not understand what I mean reading my review but once you have read this manga, YOU WILL UNDERSTAND !
Stay safe and Happy reading, fellas! Until next time 

Finally the end of a 20 years waiting period.

It's pretty clear that it took too long to finish this series and Sadamoto wanted to give its own touch to how things evolved. But in the end, he failed miserably. The manga pretty much followed the same lines as the anime bringing very little new stuff to the table.

Although it's weakness, the ending is much more clear on its meaning than the animation, without loosing much of its philosophy. Which is great, since Anno was too worried to create surrealistic messages on the original.

To close everything up, the finals chapters are happier. Bringing the tone of the end to a much brighter vibe. Which made me enjoy it a lot.

In the end. Eva is Eva, and it's very hard to not judge it without considering my baggage as a fan.

Grazie, come sempre.

Allora Shinji, dopo aver caricato l'A.T.
Misato si rivolge all'Eva-02: "A-suka, bastarda. Ci hai fatto quasi morire tutti"

Colonna sonora (by Annalilith):
"Sinceramente, Gendo Gendo Gendo..."

On the one hand, the manga does (in my opinion) a much better job explaining what's going on than End of Evangelion the film. On the other hand, the ending is completely different, and that is not a good thing. I found the change to be a very run-of-the-mill, uninteresting way to finish one of the most philosophically and theologically anime/manga ever. It is the equivalent of "it was all a dream!", which does nothing for plot or theme. Also missing is some of the confusing (though admittedly baffling) things Anno did with the original film. It's an ending to a great manga series, so it's better to read than not...but not by much.
