With dozens of bestsellers to her name, Lisa Jackson is a master of taking readers to the edge of sanity—and back—in novels that buzz with dangerous secrets and deadly passions. She continues to be fascinated by the minds and motives of both her killers and their pursuers—the personal, the professional, and the downright twisted. As she builds the puzzle of relationships, actions, clues, lies, and personal histories that haunt her protagonists, she must also confront the fear and terror faced by her victims and the harsh and enduring truth that, in the real world, terror and madness touch far too many lives and families.

EXCERPT: The sounds of the party lulled her to sleep until she awoke to the darkness. The light was off. The bed was warm.

Anna Beth was talking in whispers; maybe trying not to wake her. 'What are you doing here? Get out . . .'

Who was she talking to?

'Who's there?' Erin asked.

'Don't hurt -'

Then that flash of pain - that agonizing flash of pain - before all the darkness. The never-ending darkness . . . of oblivion and ignorance . . .

MY THOUGHTS: There are three stories in Afraid, each written by a different author: Retribution by Lisa Jackson; Ghosts by Alexandra Ivy; and Alone by Lisa Childs. The stories are connected by the main characters having been friends at boarding school, St. Cecilia's in Strasbourg, Austria.

Although Lucy, Rayne and Erin barely keep in touch, all three have some significant trauma in their pasts, which occurred either at St Cecilia's or was the reason they were sent there.

These are novellas so not quite as fleshed out as a full novel would be, yet I enjoyed each of the three very different stories equally.

The characters, particularly Lucy, are not always likeable but, especially in Lucy's case, I could understand why she was the way she was. Her guilt would be a terrible thing to live with. And if she can't like or trust herself, then who can she like and trust?

All three stories have varying elements of romance in them, but not enough to qualify them as romantic suspense. All three stories centre on individual tragedies, but the themes of loss, guilt, family dynamics and the quest for justice run through all three stories.

Three satisfying reads.

What I liked about the book:

1. Collaboration with three authors: Lisa Jackson, Alexandra Ivy, and Lisa Childs.

2. Three different mystery stories but told in the same format (now and then; present and past) and have some of the same characters and settings.

What I didn’t like about the book:

1. All three stories were about dysfunctional wealthy families with plenty of distrust, deceit, divorce, and murder. Got old after a while.

Afraid by Lisa Jackson, Alexandra Ivy and Lisa Childs brings readers three thrilling tales of romantic suspense. The commonality between the three stories in Afraid is the fact that all the women once attended a boarding school together. The stories are all told by changing the point of view between the characters and with some flashing back to the past.

Retribution is the first story in Afraid and it introduces readers to Lucy Champagne. Lucy had been sent to St. Cecilia’s after a traumatic event in her childhood. Lucy’s mother had been attacked by her then boyfriend and Lucy at only eight had been the one to testify against the attacker who is now out of prison sending Lucy into hiding.

Ghosts features Rayne Taylor who’s roommate and friend, Natalie, at St. Cecilia’s had committed suicide. Rayne finds things that belonged to Natalie in her old school things and returns them to Natalie’s brother who never thought Natalie’s death was a simple suicide. Rayne also has questions and wants to get to the truth of what happened.

Alone features Erin MacDonald who had been sent to St. Cecilia’s after Erin and her sister had been kidnapped but when the ransom was paid only Erin had been returned to her family. Now years later no one has ever found out what happened to Erin’s sister, Anna Beth, and now after Erin’s father’s passing she returns home to Detective Rafe Montego still poking around in the old case.

Being familiar with all three of the authors writing Afraid of course I felt that I would enjoy this one before I even picked it up. All three stories were entertaining in their own ways as they were different from one another with my only real complaint coming from the length which is normal for me to want a bit more depth with novellas. Overall though this was full of solid writing one would expect and I flew right through waiting to see what happened with each new tale.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

Book Review:

This is a great novella collection of three girls school friends and the tragic circumstances that brought each of them together. Great for when you have quick breaks to read. Lots of twists and turns and some romance thrown in. I like that the authors kept me guessing up until the end of each story. Including some twists I did not see coming! Very nice suspense.

This was a super cool and unique book and I can say with 100 percent certainty that I have not read anything like it before. This book is actually three short stories woven together. Written together by three very talented authors, Lisa Jackson, Alexandra Ivy and Lisa Childs!

Hello, this is like hitting a trifecta!

Each story narrates a portion of three friends who are brought together by tragedy. This book is a very easy and quick read with zero repetition or stalling (my kind of book) . Afraid, is definitely filled with suspense that will have you guessing until the very end of each story. Another little bonus is that they threw in a bit of romance that I enjoyed.

I am a huge fan of these three authors and you should be too ! I would advise everyone to pre-order Afraid! Releasing February 22, 2022, this is not a book you will want to miss!

Afraid; Lisa Jackson, Alexandra Ivy, Lisa Childs (416 pages)
Genre: Thriller, Mystery, Psychological Suspense
Rating: 4 stars

This book is a compilation of three short stories by authors; Lisa Jackson, Alexandra Ivy and Lisa Childs. Each story centers around one of three former students of St. Cecilia’s School for Girls in Salzburg, Austria.

While there is a thread which weaves each of these stories together, they also can be read as standalone. Each of the main characters survived or went through a traumatic event which has had long standing impacts on their lives. While I felt there could have been more developed in the first and third story to tie them together more, overall, I felt that the stories complimented each other well and I found it hard to choose a favorite. I’d initially been drawn to read this one as I’ve heard of best-selling author Lisa Jackson but hadn’t read any of her books. The other two authors were unknown to me. After reading this, I can say I’d definitely read any other works by any of these authors. The stories were well crafted, complex and layered mysteries which kept me guessing down to the last minute. Each of the stories had its own twists and turns and pulled off a reveal at the end which I didn’t see coming.

The short story format meant I could easily get through a story in one sitting. I enjoyed each of these stories and would definitely read more by each author in the future. Overall, this book is a suspenseful, fast paced and easy to read book which I’d highly recommend.

In this series of suspense novellas, we meet three girls from wealthy families who were sent to St. Cecilia’s School for Girls in Austria by their families after family tragedies. Now they are grown up and back home where their childhood traumas come home to roost. I love how all three stories come together -- all three of these girls were friends at the school and all have to face their particular family problems in their adulthood. Each story is well crafted and compelling in its own right. I highly recommend this book for the great stories and for the fact you can read each one separately and not have to do a marathon to finish the book as with most suspense novels.

I have voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book that I received from NetGalley. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

Afraid is a trio of short stories. Each story is connected by the fact that each of the female protagonist attended St. Cecilia’s School for Girls in Strasberg, Austria and are from wealthy American families. All three stories involve dual timelines exploring each woman’s past and present.

Lisa Jackson’s story involves Lucy Champagne. Lucy was sent to St. Cecilia’s after a tragedy involving her mother. Alexandra Ivy’s story involves Rayne Taylor, she’s sent to St. Cecilia’s because her mother is more interested in her new husband than having a daughter in her way. Lisa Childs’ story involves Erin MacDonald who arrives at St. Cecilia’s after she and her sister were kidnapped and only Erin returned.

As each of the women revisit their past, they each seek answers in the present for what happened. Each experiences a danger and finds answers they never expected.

Each short story is extremely well written and I truly enjoyed the stories. I would recommend this book. It was a fast and easy read through each story and each story kept me turning the pages.

This was fun! Having three stories together as one book made things interesting. Each was good and unique in their own way and I was actually surprised by the twists each time. I appreciate that the authors took the idea of a specific setting and then each wrote their own story with a touch of intertwining! I do wish there was a little more intertwining of the stories and a little more to that specific setting in each, but overall it was fun!

Afraid was a great collection of stories that are connected through the same boarding school that the main characters attended.

Overall average rating — 4 Stars

Retribution by Lisa Jackson — 3.5 Stars

When Lucy Champagne was eight years old, she witnessed her mother's boyfriend Ray Watkins brutally attack her. After Lucy's testimony landed Ray in prison for twenty-five years, he vowed he would make her pay and now that he's out it's only a matter of time before he finds her. Retribution was a fast-paced read that alternates between present day and flashbacks to Lucy as a child. Lucy has a lot of trauma from what happened when she was a child and she still struggles with it in the present. The suspense builds nicely over the course of the story leading to a tense finale. I liked the pacing of the story and the ending was a complete surprise which was good. Overall Retribution was an interesting story and I will be checking out more of the author's work in the future.

Ghosts by Alexandra Ivy — 4.5 Stars

Rayne Taylor was happy at St. Cecilia's, her boarding school in Austria, until her roommate Natalie committed suicide. After she finds a box of mementoes belonging to Natalie, Rayne realizes Natalie's death may not have been a suicide after all. Alexandra Ivy is the only author in this collection I've previously read, so I was looking forward to her story. In Ghosts we follow Rayne and Niko, Natalie's brother, as they begin looking into what happened to Natalie years ago as neither of them has ever accepted that she killed herself. The plot is fast-paced with a hint of romance between Rayne and Niko to keep things interesting. The ending is suspenseful and action-packed with a great confrontation with the bad guy. Overall Ghosts was my favorite story in the collection and I highly recommend the author's books.

Alone by Lisa Childs — 4 Stars

Erin MacDonald barely remembers the night she and her sister Anna Beth were kidnapped, but she remember what it was like when she was the only one to come back. Now Erin has returned to the family estate but someone doesn't want to give Erin the chance to remember. Alone follows Erin after she returns home for her father's funeral, the first time she's come back to the family estate since her sister's disappearance. While there she meets Detective Rafe Montego who is hoping to solve Anna Beth's case. After an attempt is made on Erin's life, she grows closer to Rafe as they work to piece together what happened. The ending was suspenseful and the final confrontation with the bad guy was very well done. Overall Alone was a great read and I will definitely be checking out more of the author's books.

Overall Afraid was an enjoyable read and I liked how the authors subtly connected the stories.

Baby Fluffy Otters In Easter Baskets! 😳😯😳🤯

Absolutely amazing! Thrilling! Twistier than a bobcat pretzel in a jungle! 😍 I just loved how unique this book was with 3 different queen thrjller authors each writing a short novella, but intertwined all together!
How excellently & smoothly these stories intwined all to do with an all girl's boarding school in Austria; all three women, Lucy, Rayne, & Erin, dealing with some kind of past & from wealthy families, only to later in their lives be dealing with a past that's determined to real it's ugly head for each lady.
I liked this far more than I thought I would and couldn't get enough. I loved how each girl had a history, how they each were haunted by something and continuing to run from it. Nothing felt rushed, lots of surprised & shocks along the way (I'm not surprised from these pros!), & thoroughly enjoyable! I personally have never read anything with this kind of premise & idea of three authors collabing but I adored it! An absolutely fast paced MUST read by the queens themselves! Thrills & suspense are no where near lacking in this fab longer novella-type! These ladies coalesce in the best way to form one brilliant, twisted mind!

I give this 4 / 5 Bouquets! 💐

Three stories by three authors with a connection. Sounds like a great idea. When you start reading that's where the fun ends. In the case of Lisa Jackson, here is an author with a large body of work behind her. Her prose is amateurish at best, awful at times.
The second story, Ghosts; by Alexandrea Ivy was much better but I lost interest quickly. The third story, Alone; by Lisa Childs was just the same old thing. I barely got through a couple of chapters. I can see where some may think this was a very good book but the stories just did not do anything for me. A sad end to a free book.

This collection of short stories is full of crazy twists and suspenseful turns. Each has there own flair with a tiny bit of romance but not enough to be called romantic suspense.

They are sum what connected but can be read as stand alone. St Cecelia’s School for girls in Salzburg, Austria is the center of there connecting story.

Murder and lots of tragedies. Crazy, creepy, families and story endings I sure didn’t see coming.

Overall this is a good collection of novella’s but my favorite was Alexandra Ivy.

AFRAID is a compilation of three novellas by three different and amazing authors, with the stories having a boarding school in common. All of the stories were tantalizing, with elements of suspense as well as romance in each one. The first one by Lisa Jackson is called “Retribution” and is about a woman named Lucy running from her past and determined to keep her daughter safe. The second one, “Ghosts”, is about a young woman who is caught up in solving what happened to her roommate at St. Cecelia’s School for Girls. The official finding was suicide, but Rayne doesn’t believe that is true. The final story is about Erin MacDonald, a poor little rich girl who returns home for her father’s funeral and to face the ghost of her missing sister. Entitled “Alone”, this was the creepiest of the trio of stories, although each was eerie and sinister in its own way. Cue the music from the old horror movies and turn the lights down low in order to set the mood for these macabre and fascinating tales of self-discovery as well as surprise twists. The characterization was well done, especially in the format of a novella in which characters have to be explained thoroughly and quickly in order to stage the story. The three stories flowed together seamlessly and I really enjoyed the setting of the school in Austria that was what Lucy, Rayne and Erin had in common. With a thread of horror and more than a little suspense, this book should not be missed by fans of suspense with a touch of romance to whet the appetite for love. I don’t remember ever enjoying a collection of novellas more as I raced through the pages to make sure that each woman was safe from the threat, both known and unknown ones.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Afraid is an anthology made of three unpublished stories written by Lisa Jackson, Alexandra Ivy and Lisa Childs. I know these authors, of course, but as much as I love Alexandra Ivy, I’ve never read (or once a long time ago) the two others.
We could say I was discovering them with this anthology and after my reading, as much as I will go on with Alexandra, I won’t read books by the two others.
The 3 novellas are connected by the heroines who at one time in their life went together in the same institution, St Cecilia’s school, a girls’ school in Austria. It’s a super select establishment where only rich families and celebrities who can afford it send their daughters.

Retribution – Lucy’s story – written by Lisa Jackson.
Lucy is the daughter of a famous actress. She was sent at the school very young after witnessing an attempt murder on her mother. Her testimonial sent Ray Watkins, then her mother’s boyfriend, in prison. He never forgave Lucy and vowed to get revenge. When the novella begins, Lucy is on the run with her daughter because Ray has been released. While she’s hiding, her ex-husband, Ian, her daughter’s father, is looking for her. Between the memories coming back to her, the feelings still there for her ex-husband, and the threat on her, Lucy is going to live difficult moments. I didn’t like this novella at all, whether it is the characters, the heroes, or the secondary characters, one shadier than the other. At the end of the story, the suspense is solved and we have huge surprises.

Ghosts – Rayne’s story – written by Alexandra Ivy.
Rayne Taylor was roommate and friend of Natalie Scantlin, a boarder who suicided on graduation day. When her story begins, some time after the previous novella, she decides to pick up some stuff Lucy sent her that were stored in her mother’s attic. In the box, she finds a note that makes her question the circumstances of her friend’s death. She decides to contact Niko, Natalie’s brother, and after some incidents, they join forces in order to find answers to her questions. Niko and Rayne had met shortly before Natalie’s suicide, and the attraction had been immediate. However they hadn’t seen each other after the tragedy. While they’re investigating, of course their attraction returns. It’s the only novella where there’s a clear love story (at the same time it’s Alexandra and for her it’s an important element in her books, I hope it will still be!). The suspense is well done and just like for the previous story, we have surprises. It’s the only story I liked even if it isn’t the one I prefer from the author.

Alone – Erin’s story – written by Lisa Childs.
Erin McDonald was sent to the institution after being the only survivor when her sister and she were kidnapped. Her sister’s body was never found.
Alone is a very strange novella and it’s very difficult to say more about it without spoiler while trying not to confuse those who’ll read my review. I’ll just say two things:
1 - Erin’s sister was a famous model when she disappeared. She was then 14 years old. Nobody got over this tragedy and through the years, reporters said they took pictures of her at different places.
2 – The heroine doesn’t remember at all what happened this night, so she doesn’t know if her sister is dead or alive.

The novella begins when Erin comes back at her father’s home for his funeral. After the discovery of a body, the investigation is reopened and incidents against the heroine occur.
I didn’t like the characters in this novella, whether that is the heroine, the hero or the different important secondary characters. However, clearly, once again we have surprises concerning the resolution of the suspense.

The novella ends with an epilogue 10 years later in which Erin organizes a party to which Lucy, Rayne and their respective families are invited.

To conclude, this anthology can perhaps please fans of thrillers. As for me, I didn’t like it and my best rating goes to Alexandra Ivy’s story.

This is an anthology by the 3 authors mentioned. Each has a story to tell and the only connection between the stories and the FMC’s is a boarding school; St. Cecilia’s in Austria.

First story is about Lucy Champagne. 2nd is about Rayne Taylor and the 3rd is about Erin MacDonald.

A really good read. All the stories are good but I did like the 2nd/3rd stories slightly more than the first.
I honestly couldn’t tell who dunnit and that’s always a great thing for me. I love not knowing and guessing. I do feel like the characters, suspicious of everyone and that to me is a sign of a fantastic book.

I was given this e-ARC by NetGalley and Kensington Books in exchange for my honest review.

Afraid is a book written by three different Authors with three different styles and stories that blend together. It’s like reading a short story within a story. I’m lucky to receive an advance copy of Afraid. The publishing date is an interesting one.. I would definitely buy this book! It has it all within: romance, trauma, and suspense. It’s a thriller that keeps you on your toes. One you don’t want to put down. It’s always who you don’t expect, until you do! I love reading a story and finding the title in the story and knowing this is why they named the book! I love reading Lisa Jackson novels she is a favorite author of mine. I having been reading her novels for a while now and like her style.. Doing a review is like being back in school! It’s a little harder! I want to tell you just buy it and you will understand it’s a book worthy of reading!
A boarding school connects all three main characters. Each one has gone thru trauma in a different way. Each one is digging up their past and that it is hard to remember the full details. First section is from Lisa Jackson Retribution. Second section by Alexandra Ivy Ghost. And third section by Lisa Childs Alone. They tie together and stand alone.

Thank you to Kensington Books, Zebra, and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Afraid by Lisa Jackson; Alexandra Ivy; Lisa Childs is a collection of connecting novellas by a trio of bestselling thriller and suspense authors. The novellas revolve around three women, Lucy, Rayne, and Erin. They were former students at St. Cecilia’s School for Girls, an elite boarding school for the rich and famous. But what potential scandals are hiding behind the glossy facade? And are people willing to kill to keep their secrets safe?

Here is a gripping excerpt from Chapter 1 of Retribution by Lisa Jackson:

"Lucy froze.
Hiding in Mama’s bathroom.
Holding Mama’s special scissors, unable to escape.
How many times had she heard, “Don’t touch Mama’s things” from her mother, and now she was going to be caught.
She bit her lip. She wasn’t supposed to be in Mama’s suite, and she especially wasn’t supposed to be stealing the scissors, but she needed them to trim her own hair, which Mama insisted couldn’t be cut."

Overall, Afraid is an amazing new collaboration between three masters of the genre. I was so excited when I saw that they were collaborating to make this book! I knew I had to add it to my TBR list right away. Fortunately, the book lived up to my expectations. I enjoyed reading this book so much and seeing how the three authors' novellas connected and differed from each other. One highlight of this book was the perfect length of theddd thriller novellas. It means that you get to the reveal and the climax much earlier than you would if these were full-length novels. If you're intrigued by the excerpt above, or if you're a fan of thrillers in general, you won't regret checking out this book when it comes out in February!

*I received this book as a giveaway posted on Goodreads. All thoughts are my own*

While the premise of this book was excellent, the writing fell flat. Each story gives just enough to get a taste of the world. Each story is completely separate only lightly mentioning each character in minuscule doses with each short story.
The reason why this allowed it to fall so flat? The world-building for something like that was non-existent. One of the things for thrillers is that the reader is connected to the world and characters. They don't have to like them, just connect. Given how short each story was, it ended before each being immersed in the world.
Would I have loved each story as a full novel thriller? Yes.
Did I love it in the format that it's being presented in? No.

I love all three of these authors. I was excited to read this even though I am not a novella fan. Honestly, when I read the last word of the last story, I went "Eh". This was just okay. Would I recommend this - probably not. There are so many better stories out there.

Thank you #netgalley and #kensingtonbooks #zebra for the earc.

Predictable and early solutions to all three novellas and cringe worthy romance subplots. Not a book I’d recommend.

As all of these three authors are familiar and loved by me, this book was an automatic choice for me. While normally I don't read a lot of novellas, they were just the right size for a quick read late at night when I didn't want to be up till 4 AM finishing a suspense novel that would not let me sleep until resolving "who dun it" before being able to sleep. I loved the fact that these books were loosely connected yet stood alone. The only fault was that they ended way to quick. Each novella would have been a fabulous full length novel as they kept me quessing up until the end.

Afraid is a collection of novellas by three very talented but different authors. These three stories blend very well together despite the the different writing techniques by each. The stories are held together by three women and one prestigious boarding school attended by the rich and famous. These stories are filled with mystery, murder, dark secrets, revenge and a few creepy twist and turns! It is fast paced that has a lot of suspense and even some romance. I have read books from two of these authors and one is new to me but would definitely read more from all of them. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a good thriller.

Thank you Kensington Publishing, Between the Chapters, Lisa Jackson, Ivy Alexander and Lisa Childs for an advanced copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

I enjoyed the stories and the fact that they all three of the female main characters attended St. Cecilias School for Girls. I found the characters engaging however I could not find any love for Lucy. I found her decision making quite questionable and her personality too flighty. Her daughter Renee had quite the spunk.
