Arctic Adventure: A Tundra Tale

Rate this book
A gorgeously illustrated lyrical journey through the majestic Arctic landscape following a pair of arctic foxes and a human mother and child on their intersecting adventures.

Little Fox peeks out from her den.
Biting cold nips her nose.
Yip, yip, she calls,
as Mama Fox surveys the land.

Little Fox wriggles in delight.
She is ready to explore.

When Little Fox awakens one cold arctic morning, she is ready to explore the sights and sounds of the arctic with Mama Fox. Little Fox loves the click click click of the reindeer herd and the groooooar of the walrus. But new creatures are following her and Mama on their trek through the frozen tundra. As the storm rolls in, will these new creatures prove to be unexpected friends?

This beautifully illustrated picture book will delight young readers and parents alike. In addition to the atmospheric text, this book also includes extensive backmatter that discusses the science of the Arctic Tundra, information about climate issues, and tips for how readers can help.

Richie’s Picks: ARCTIC ADVENTURE: A TUNDRA TALE by Jyoti Rajan Gopal and Alexandra Cook, ill., Macmillan/Feiwel and Friends, January 2026, 40p., ISBN: 978-1-250-38544-4

“Watch out where the huskies go
And don’t you eat that yellow snow”
– Frank Zappa (1974)

“THUMP . . . THUMP . . . BUMP . . . floes collide.
Groooooar . . . Groooooar . . . a walrus bellows.
A sled trundles by.
Hawooo . . . Hawooo, calls the lead husky.
Vrooooom . . . the distant sound of a snow mobile rumbles.
Streetlights glimmer.
In the Arctic winter, darkness reigns.
But life in the tundra flourishes,
in
many,
many
myriad
ways”

ARCTIC ADVENTURE is a beautiful, joyful, and informative picture book tale starring an Arctic fox and her kit, who live in a nearby den, as well as a human mom and her child, who have sailed over to experience the tundra during the middle of the winter, when the sun does not rise for weeks on end.

Both mothers take their youngsters out adventuring. The two pairs coexist at a comfortable distance whilst experiencing the Arctic beauty and all sorts of Arctic critters. Then a snow storm temporarily separates both of the moms from their kids. The two mothers meet up and are chill as they await the reappearance of their offspring. Meanwhile, the young fox and the child meet up and engage in friendly hijinx. Eventually, everyone gets back together, and head off to their respective homes.

The mixed media illustrations are playful and rather stunning, given how the aurora borealis serves as the visual backdrop of this out-of-this-world (BRRRR!!!) adventure.

“The narwhal is known as the unicorn of the sea because of its long spiral tusk, which looks like a horn, but is actually a tooth. Female narwhals may develop a tusk, but this is rare. Narwhals are one of the deepest-diving whales, diving more than a mile to feed on fish, shrimp, and squid, and surfacing for air when they need it.”

The narrative is followed by extensive backmatter including scientific information about climate change and what we can do to help mitigate it, along with explaining the setting, which is the archipelago of Svalbard, Norwegian islands located between Norway and the North Pole. There are brief descriptions of the varied critters that the foxes, humans (and readers) observe in the story, as well as details about the Northern lights that, during the polar night in the middle of the long winter, can be seen around the clock for weeks straight.

Winter blankets the arctic landscape, and darkness envelops the people and animals living in this remote part of the world. In the face of bitter cold, arctic foxes, humans, reindeer, and more investigate their surroundings, engaging with one another as best they can. Playful moments soon lead to peril, however, when a storm quickly builds, separating children from their caregivers and threatening the calm beauty of their world. Though the chaos is real, gentleness soon emerges, and a beautiful light show reminds everyone of the dynamic nature of the frozen Arctic landscape. Hues of blue, purple, and white permeate each illustration in this lyrical picture book, utilizing a blend of textures and designs to bring the world of the Arctic into the mind of the reader. Despite the fact that the landscape is frigid, the illustrations provide a sense of calm and comfort, connecting the reader to the Arctic world in a more resonant way. Many creatures are depicted beside the human characters in the story, and each of these animals has a warm, anthropomorphic face that softens their otherwise animalistic features. Even though there is an approachability to these images, however, the animals are nonetheless participating in behaviors appropriate to the natural world, helping readers better understand the realities of life in the Arctic. Lyrical text is filled with onomatopoeia which, coupled with its clever placement, make the words engaging for young readers as the story is being read aloud to them. Extensive back matter supports the learning of both children and caregivers, inviting them to return to the story as they seek out the many animals depicted within it. Best for very young readers, this is a charming and warm introduction to Arctic life, and it can be enjoyed in both large and small settings.

Lovely Arctic winter story with the additional material telling us the setting is on the islands of Swalbard belonging to Norway. We see two families in the illustrations a Mother and child and an Arctic Fox and young one as they walk the tundra seeing Arctic animals as well as the Northern Lights. The illustrations give the swirling blowing feeling of the Arctic and the colors of the Northern lights. Four pages of appended material discussing Arctic winters, the Arctic animals featured in the story, and ways to work at preserving the Arctic environment.
I enjoyed this title even though I am not a lover of winter.

Kids will love Little Fox and enjoy his romps and runs through an arctic landscape. Beautiful lyrical text uncovers all the wonders of the arctic—from the animals and landscapes to blowing icy winds. And the illustrations overlay a stunningly visual portrayal of the arctic. But not everything in this story is cold and blowy. There is an amazing amount of heartfelt warmth and love as both humans and animals intersect in the most tender of ways. Backmatter completes this book. A great classroom read and bedtime story. Highly recommend.

I got shiver-chills while reading this beautifully written and illustrated story. It made me want to curl up with a cup of cocoa and a blanket in front of a fire. The story parallels the lives of a little girl and her mom and an arctic fox kit and her mom (and an assortment of other arctic animals) during winter on the tundra, and culminates in a glorious showing of northern lights. This is an engaging introduction to life in the Arctic, complete with back matter describing the tundra and its inhabitants in a bit more depth. Every child will want to hug that arctic fox!

What a gorgeous book! Lyrical and yet packed with information, Arctic Adventure is a beautiful winter story that puts you in the perspective of a mother fox and her kit. Because it's written through the eyes of this fox family, readers will have empathy for what they have to go through to survive. I love that they can then go to the back of the book to learn ways to help. This is the kind of book that I could reread with my sons to get a deeper understanding of the Arctic and also just to linger over the beautiful illustrations.

Arctic Adventures: A Tundra Tale immerses readers into a beautiful, albeit rarely portrayed place (especially in a book for kids). Replete with lyrical, and sparse language, emotion is movingly guided by it and by the patchwork of colors, shapes, and textures present on each page. Through the intersecting journeys taken by a human mother and young daughter with that of a mama fox and her kit, readers gain a sense of connection to the natural world and its impact on both. A gorgeous, meaningful experience awaits! Extensive backmatter offers fabulous additional content.
