4 QUARANTINE STARS!

"We'll survive. Like we always do."

Continuing from Defect Part One, Selene is blinded by rage from the thieves that have taken everything and destroyed their lives so easily. Yet when the rage subsides, she is left to question the truth buried in all the lies.

Who can she trust?
Does she listen to her Nan and trust no one? What about Anders, the boy who seems so familiar yet stirs awake the butterflies in her stomach? The world is astir and with the government on its toes, trusting the wrong person can destroy everything Selene's lived for.

Can she PROTECT her identity? (See what I did there... hehehe)
After hiding herself and the chip on her wrist for the last seven years, getting caught would be foolish after everything that's happened. Nan and Eli need her more than ever, but with problems occurring one after another, Selene's once peaceful life is gone in a flash.

--

This installment was better than the first because we were familiar with the setting and it was definitely filled with a lot more action.
You are still left with questions, sure they left me frustrated, because I wanted MORE! It was definitely too short, because just when I was getting into the book, it ended leaving me in shock.. :(

Can't wait for Defect Part 3!!

So I been wanting for this one since I finish Defect part1. OMG! This book was amazing. And still the only problem that I got with it, it is that is was to short. I wanted so much more.

I love Selena so much. That type of girl who has to deal so much problems. It is nice to see how it came up to the world from Legacy Code.

I love this kinda of storys about a new world. I know that are many books with this story out there, but you know what I like about this one? It is so different. I never read something like that. It just intrigue me, make me want more, and more. And also, you get so caught up in the story that you never realize that it is over.

For sure read this book. It is one that you don't want to miss. :)
P.S. Can't wait for the next one!

This novella series is one of the best I have read. This is only the second volume and I am hooked! It draws you in right away and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Defect Part two picks up right where part one left off. The criminals who came to Selene's house and took everything they had have left trouble in their wake. Selene wants to go after them but, quickly figures out she can't. She can't leave her loved ones. When the police show up to their house. They want to take Selene in for questioning. That is a problem given what she is. A Protected. She knows she must leave her family in order to protect them. To what lengths will Selene go to protect her family? Who can she trust when so much is at stake?

Luckily for us Anders makes an appearance! When Selene needs him the most he is there to help her. He promises to help get her family away and keep them safe. Selene fees like she can trust him given what he has done for her already. I am not convinced quite yet that he is going to be able to help her but, I think he is a good guy. I will be sad if he turns out not to be!

Unfortunately, things are far worse then they seem. The quarantine is spreading and Selene's family has been exposed to the "flu virus". One that the government says they can cure. This is not the case. The government is hiding things. They are not telling the truth about the sickness, how it was started, and how bad it is. What would you do if your family was at risk? For Selene they are in more danger then everyone else given her and Eli's Protected status. Will she be able to save her family?

I am loving this series so far. Yes, they are novellas but, I personally love them. Defect Part Two was a fast action packed read and I can't wait for the next one!!

How refreshing to read a Young Adult thriller set in a dark future, that does NOT remind me of The Hunger Games (unlike the Z 2134, 2135, and 2136 series: Z 2134: Episode 1). I enjoyed the 1st Defect novella and liked Part Two even more. Certainly enough to go on to Parts 3 and 4. I have Autumn's Legacy Code (Legacy Code #1) by Autumn Kalquist on my Kindle already (the Defect novellas lead up to Legacy Code, they sort of set a foundation for that story). The story is set in a dark future with tones of X-Files thrown in. We learn a little more in each novella...can't wait to see where this goes. I will hold off on Legacy Code until I am thru with the Defect novellas.

This book is the second part of the prequel of the Legacy Code series. It picks up where we left in Part 1.

Again, it's a short book. I wished it was longer, because with what we found out in this book, I'm even more excited about this!
Anders is still one big mystery, but I definitely like him. He may not be trusted 100%, but I still like him ;)

This book is full of action and even more mysteries, but I loved it! It's a shame I read it one sitting, because now I want MORE :D I cannot wait for Part 3!

NOTE - the author advises a full length novel will be coming out.

This is the second book in the Legacy Code prequel. The first is very short and while this one is longer it is not lengthy. Ms. Kalquist writes a very tight story with proper grammar and punctuation. I am thankful for that.

This is the story of a teenage girl, her brother, and her grandmother living off the grid as the corporation has taken over and gene modification has started to destroy the earth. Children have been modified so they will not get sick, but the result is that their children are likely to die.The general public fears the GM and the corporation is collecting them for experiments. Defect is the story of what happened on earth so that 300 years later we are wandering the stars in a broken down fleet.

The characters are real and easy to relate to. Their interaction and our young heroine are written believably. An ecology ruined by gene modification is readily acceptable given current concerns.

I recommend this book. The reason I give it 3 stars and not 4 is that I object to authors who can obviously write a good novel breaking up what should be one book into several short cliff hangers. It seems to be common practice and for those poorly written, untalented, want to be writers, I understand. But, Ms. Kalquist has the ability to write and should respect her readers enough to provide us with a complete novel.

I have received a digital ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. The following review is, in no way, biased or altered; whether paid or free. Thanks to Autumn Kalquist for kindly providing me with an e-ARC of her book.

Overall rating: 4 stars.
[Very good.]

What I liked: As usual, the story. This whole plot is very impressive. I’m pretty sure that, as the story develops more, this will become more action-packed. A very good read, in my opinion.

What I didn’t like: There’s nothing I could find defective in this book. Everything from the cover to the plot to the characters to the cliffhanger, was great. Autumn Kalquist’s writings get better day by day! But still, I’d have given this book a 5 star only if it had more events.

Favorite quote:“I’d hoped our first date would involve dinner and a movie. Not fire and a prison break.””-- Anders Johansen, Chapter 5.

I am impatiently waiting for the next installment!
P.S. I am tremendously sorry for the late review :(

Defect #2 throws us right back in where #1 left off. The wanted criminals have invaded their home taking everything they have and destroying the crop they've had growing. The local cops happen upon their house and begin to question Nan about the whereabouts of Selena. Selena's world is turned upside down almost immediately. She has to fight even harder to continue to protect herself and her family. Things are getting more out of hand with this pandemic and the freak out that people are having.

The Corporate Coalition is starting to quarantine people. The food shipments are still stopped. The wanted criminals are still out there. Disease is spreading.

We learn more about who the mysterious Anders – who he is, and why he introduced himself to Selena to begin with.

Trouble seems to follow Selena everywhere she goes. Things get incredibly intense. I look forward to continuing the series !

I enjoyed it as much as the first "Defect" Part! It's a short and easy read and you can finish it in one sitting.

The characters are likeable and realistic and especially Anders is a mystery. Why did he help Serena? Why is he not scared? What does he know? I'm not sure if we should trust him ...

It's fast-paced with lots of action, so you can't stop reading, even if you would want to. You're constantly on edge and want to know what happens next - it's really captivating! I'm already looking forward to the next installment! ;)

Defect is a two part novella/short story that takes place before Legacy Code. Selene and Elias live on a homestead with Nan, living mostly off the land. Selene and Elias must hide the fact that they are "protected." This means they have been genetically altered to resist disease but are feared by the general population. They must hide to avoid being detained in a special camp.

Selene and Elias go to town one day to discover a "food shortage" and that their newly acquired currency does not work. They are rescued by the mysterious Anders. However, life is about to get much more complicated.

I am hoping she continues this story eventually!

I received a copy of this book for an honest review.

Book 2 continues where the first book left of, the thieves took everything from Selene, she is so mad that she tries to go after them.
Instead of finding them she is found now she is in more trouble than ever.

She finds an unexpected ally and now it seems that Corporate Coalition has even more secrets up their sleeves.

I like the world building and the writing what I don't like is that these novella's have so few pages, I need more!!!

This second part of the Defect novella series jumps straight in where the first left off. And Selene is straight away on high alert. The tension doesn't diminish one iota during the entirety of the book and I feel that I am more tensed up waiting for Part 3 than I was for this one after reading Part 1. I just want more and I'm sure you will too. Go read it!

Wow, just wow. What a great continuation to the Defect series! Kalquist knows how to capture you right from the get go in her books, and keep you reading nonstop to the very end.

Defect 2 left off right where 1 ended! There's more action, excitement, drama....did I mention how great the book was!

If you haven't read #1, go get it so you can continue with #2 and be a part of an awesome story!

This is the second installment of the Legacy Code prequel series, and I have to say that I loved it just as much as the first installment. The story picks up where the first one left off, with Selene and her family having been robbed by a group of sick people who had escaped a quarantine. And as if that wasn't bad enough, Kalquist really upped the stakes by throwing one bad thing after another at Selene. The pacing was excellent and left me craving the next installment.

I enjoyed part one of this novella series, but part 2 just blows it out of the water! More drama, more lies revealed and one shocking ending! These are quick and highly entertaining reads. This novella series is a needle in the haystack kind of find. I kind of stumbled across it and I’m glad I did. I look forward to finding out what happens to Selene, Gran, her little brother and mysterious Anders. I give The Defect pt 2, 5 stars!

Another action-packed, fast paced installment of the Defect Series! Selene is quite the likable character, and I want to know ALL the things about her world. I read this in one sitting, and definitely cannot wait for the next book to explore more of Selene's world, what Anders's deal is, and what is going to happen next to Selene and her family!

Great continuation from Defect 1. It picks up right where it left off. Selene is on the run after selling food to some strangers and being paid with flagged bits. When the cops come for her, she must decide whether to save herself or save Nan and Eli. Anders, the boy she met in town, becomes an unlikely ally as the world around changes to something very much unknown.

Ok, so I thought the first part of this story was good. This one was epic. I finished reading it at work (shhhh, don't tell ;P) and I wanted to scream when it ended. I need to know what happens!
This is a truly addictive story and well worth the read. Highly reccommended. The characters are great and the plot is gripping. Very much anticipating the final two installments of this short series.

It started where Part 1 left off. This part was another fast read, leaves you wanting more from this author. I really wish the story would have been longer. It does address some interesting aspects of our current society trends. I would recommend it as a good short story. However I felt Parts 1 and 2 should have been a single Part.

"Defect," showcases the wonderful talent of author Autumn Kalquist. She's mastered that easy, seemingly effortless, way of telling a tale that pulls you into the story immediately. The world-building is fantastic and the characters are ones that I definitely want to learn more about. If you're looking for a great sci-fi/apocalyptic read, you'll definitely want to check out this new series.

I can't get enough of this series, it's so good. When this one ended I just wished there was a Defect Part 3 because I have to know what happens next. I am now reading Decode and then I plan to start Legacy Code. This series is the best series I've started since Divergent.
