🕉INSIGHT: A modern retelling of the Shiv Purana, one of the eighteen Mahapuranas in Hinduism, the book aims to distill the essence of the ancient scripture for the modern generation. It is Part 1 of a series, and contains the first two Samhitas or sections of the original text.
🕉REVIEW: Dealing with stories and philosophical insights into the timeless glory of Lord Shiva, this book truly serves as a noble venture, and succeeds in making a mostly obscure ancient text more accessible to the new and uninitiated readers. The language used is very simple and easy to understand; the content is divided into appropriate sections and chapters which aids in making the book more reader-friendly. There are also few images and tables/flowcharts included in the first section, though I found them to be missing in later chapters. While the book succeeds in its primary goal, an intermediate/informed reader may find the text to be rather over-simplified.

As someone born in a Hindu family, my first exposure to the religion was in the form of stories: Mahabharat and Ramayana were stories for me, narrated by my aunt. Every afternoon, when the family napped, I pestered her to continue the saga. Almost all the religions of the world have stories and use them to propagate their sacred word. Shiv Puran Unlocked serves the same purpose of spreading the holy word by means of stories.
'Shiv Puran Unlocked' demystifies one of the most revered texts within the Hindu scriptures, eponymous Shiv Puran. A profound text with deep philosophical meaning, this simpler version is dedicated to Lord Shiva. For centuries, author writes, it has guided truth-seekers and devotees alike, showing them a path of enlightenment and spiritual awakening. It's, however, tough to read and even tougher to comprehend. The author, that's why, has presented a simplified version of this divine text. Whether you are a devotee or a curious soul, it's apt for everyone. Meant as a middle version between modernity and tradition, it helps to bring the teachings of Lord Shiva to forefront by means of stories.
The author has simplified the complicated texts and even more complex symbolism, thereby cutting down its volume to manageable and readable text. The author has put up a disclaimer that it's not meant to replace the original version, nor is it meant for academic purpose. However efforts have been made to preserve the essence and soul of the original.
But what exactly is in Shiv Puran? It is an account of conversations between two rishis: Saunaka and Suta. Originally, the Shiv Puran had about but it was slater said to be abridged by Sage Vyasa who edited it down to to 24,000 verses. It's divided into seven Samhitas, each offering a unique aspect of Lord Shiva’s teachings and stories. My favourite story was of Devaraja of town Kiratas.
The book contains stories that tell the readers about the various forms of Lord Shiva and Parvati, explaining the paths navigating the complex lessons of creation, devotion and karma. Not just these, the writer has also included tales of demons and rishis, teaching the difference between good and bad.

As someone born in a Hindu family, my first exposure to the religion was in the form of stories: Mahabharat and Ramayana were stories for me, narrated by my aunt. Every afternoon, when the family napped, I pestered her to continue the saga. Almost all the religions of the world have stories and use them to propagate their sacred word. Shiv Puran Unlocked serves the same purpose of spreading the holy word by means of stories.
'Shiv Puran Unlocked' demystifies one of the most revered texts within the Hindu scriptures, eponymous Shiv Puran. A profound text with deep philosophical meaning, this simpler version is dedicated to Lord Shiva. For centuries, author writes, it has guided truth-seekers and devotees alike, showing them a path of enlightenment and spiritual awakening. It's, however, tough to read and even tougher to comprehend. The author, that's why, has presented a simplified version of this divine text. Whether you are a devotee or a curious soul, it's apt for everyone. But what exactly is in Shiv Puran? It is an account of conversations between two rishis: Saunaka and Suta. Originally, the Shiv Puran had about but it was slater said to be abridged by Sage Vyasa who edited it down to to 24,000 verses. It's divided into seven Samhitas, each offering a unique aspect of Lord Shiva’s teachings and stories. My favourite story was of Devaraja of town Kiratas.
The book contains stories that tell the readers about the various forms of Lord Shiva and Parvati, explaining the paths navigating the complex lessons of creation, devotion and karma. Not just these, the writer has also included tales of demons and rishis, teaching the difference between good and bad.

In the era of criticism where new generation is often judged for not being rooted to the culture , there are rare minds who think about bridging that gap of past and present mindsets and one of the important measures to do that is the language and presentation. Shiv Puran unlocked by Manu Siddharth appears like an attempt and a beautiful one to break down the complexities of the original text into a modern or rather easy way for imparting a better understanding of it to the new unaware people.
The most pleasing part I found as i entered the book was the indexes. The well organised Volume and chapter names represent the amount of care, dedication and honesty of the writer. The intent is so clear. The text is not written merely for fame but there is a hope to induce some kind of connecting conscience with the contemporary co citizens and bring them together at one table of Hinduism , the Shiva truth and the energy of the the supreme divine.

And what is there more to feel delighted about? It's the pictures. Sidharth understands the mind of young readers when it comes to scriptures. A text supported by a picture or a flow chart is well received by reader's mind especially someone who is getting indulged in spritual and divine learnings for the first time. The Author has put his heart in his work as the purity of the main motive is so clearly conveyed.
I am so impressed with Manu Siddharth and this is what is needed To join hands with youth of today and indulge them in our roots. To merge in their ways of expression. Manu Siddharth has done a phenomenal job. One must really give this book a try if they want to get a deeper understanding of Shiva. Mind you it's just not an another book, It's a saga of the very existence of the one universal energy

Have you faced this that you want to read ancient scriptures but you know the complex explainations, long stories and more particularly the language become a big hindrance for you?
I have always been attracted to dogs and animals, and knowing they are loved by Mahakal or Pashupati Nath who is a part of Shiva or Shiva, always intrigues me to learn more about him. Even though I am an agnostic still and exploring which sanatan dharma encourages us to, the aura and energy of Mahadev make me transcend into something beautiful I cannot describe. Thus, when I came across this Retelling of one of the sacred texts of Sanatan Dharma - Shiva Purana, I had to buy and read it as it was mentioned that its written in simplified words and yes, truly it is!
It makes this ancient scripture accessible without losing its depth. The book is divided into clear sections—like Vidyesvara Samhita, which explains creation, time, and the symbolism of devotion, and Rudra Samhita, which narrates emotional and powerful stories of Sati, Parvati, and Shiva’s cosmic balance of creation and destruction. Each story is explained in simple words while still highlighting deeper truths of karma, liberation, and devotion.
While reading these stories and texts, some of which we have heard from our elder family members or read elsewhere but many new ones I got to know from this book and thus it felt profound! 📚 Sati, Shiva & the Secrets Within – A Reader’s Reflection.
"Shiv Puran Unlocked" beautifully simplifies the essence of the Vidyeshvara Samhita and Rudra Samhita (Sections 1 & 2), making the world of Shiva accessible yet spiritually rich. The author manages to keep the depth, devotion, and mysticism intact while presenting the stories in an easy-to-follow way.
One chapter that truly stayed with me was “The Story of Vishnu’s Coronation and Sati’s Separation.” It narrates how Shiva crowns Vishnu, blesses him with boons, and later how Sati meets Rama, doubts him, and returns to Shiva feeling ashamed.
This left me wondering:
“Why did Shiva mentally abandon Sati after she tested Rama?”
Shiva had vowed that anyone who looked at Sati with impure intentions would be punished. But Rama respected her deeply — so why did Shiva distance himself? The answer lies in Sati taking the form of Sita. By assuming Sita’s identity, even briefly, she symbolically placed herself as “another man’s wife.” For Shiva, who embodies absolute truth and dharma, his vow became bound to this act. To uphold it, he mentally renounced Sati, even though his love for her remained unchanged.

I have always wanted to read more epic Puranas and I have tried a few as well, but the complex language and my limited experience with this genre made reading them a little difficult. This book caught my attention because it promised a simplified version of the Shiv Puran and I was curious to try it.
The book begins with a simple introduction to the Shiv Puran and then follows with a Shiv Puran chart table. The whole book is divided into two parts: Vidyesvara Samhita and Rudra Samhita. The first part explains the greatness of Shiva, the meaning of the Shivlinga, meditation, the power of prayers and other spiritual wisdom. The second part is filled with stories of Shiva, including many familiar tales that we may have heard before or seen on television.
In simpler terms Vidyesvara Samhita feels like a meditation and wisdom guide, while Rudra Samhita is more like the epic stories and adventures. Out of the two, I enjoyed Rudra Samhita the most because it was very interesting and engaging to read.
The beauty of this book is that it explains everything even a long and complicated terms in simpler and cleaner narration without losing its meaning or depth. The cute pictures placed between chapters add freshness and make the reading experience more enjoyable. The writing is beginner-friendly and very easy to follow.

But the real text is long, filled with intricate language and complex symbolism, so through this particular book, the author tries to help the modern readers, philosophers, seekers, or the normal enthusiasts to get to know about that wisdom in a simplified manner.
What I like most about the book is that even though the author tries to simplify the sacred text as much as possible, he also tries to keep the stories and insights as real and chronological as possible. The author uses his beautiful storytelling method to make the book more engaging and interesting. Also, illustrated pictures are also going to give you a spiritual journey.

Reading Shiv Puran Unlocked was like opening a window to a world I’ve always felt connected to but never fully understood. As someone who has loved Mahadev since childhood, I’ve longed to read the Shiv Puran, yet its complexity always kept me at a distance. This book changed that.
The author has managed to keep the soul of the Shiv Puran alive while making it approachable for anyone whether you are a believer or just curious. The retellings of Shiva’s stories are engaging and respectful. When I read about the churning of the ocean, the story of Ganga descending to earth, or Shiva’s cosmic dance, I felt like I was right there, watching it unfold.

To tell the truth, this is something I loved immensely. The scriptures, I must admit, have always struck me as frightening, and this book read more like a wise peer, who with equanimity, elucidates. The stories, especially of Sati and Parvati, were deeply full of significance and emotion, and the symbolism of Shivling along with devotion to Shiva was explained with great lucidity. It is the bridge the book creates between mundane existence and age-old wisdom that stands out the most. The entire text presents guidance, rather than a lecture, on convoluted aspects of life like spirituality.

When I was a kid, my grandparents often narrated stories about Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Most of these tales revolved around the triumph of good over evil, and I loved listening to them.
