I love my horror how I like my metal, a lot. So yeah, if it exists at the intersection of metal and horror I want it, so I don’t know how this book escaped my notice for so long, I mean it’s on Godless and I feel like I’m over there browsing the new releases like every other day?

Onto the review.
This book is like Metalocalypse if the guys were actively evil instead of just adorable rich idiots. By which I mean the blood? Everywhere. Brutality? Gratuitous as all hecks and creative. The piss? Also present, don’t you worry. The author tells you from the get-go that there is no redeeming value to his characters so you know you have to just sit back and let the love (and hate for no one hates on the metal scene quite like metalheads) for the music flow. There’s a story to act as a support for the violence and somewhat humorous nature of it all but it’s really about the brutality of it all and the author certainly has a knack for creative kills. Honestly my only beef with this book is that I wanted to know how the guys got there, how did they find each other and realize that they were kindred spirits like that?

4.5 rounded up.

This review was written to the tune of Abandoned Rooms of Misspelled Agony by Moral Collapse in case anyone was wondering what I’m listening to on this scorchingly warm Sunday morning.

*Death Metal meets VOTM* Genital Rot is a death metal band getting ready to release their new album and what will be fun to these vile sadists!? Going on a killing spree drugged out of their asses. Nobody is safe when they come around….not even babies. This book was obnoxious is the best ways. I’m not the biggest death metal fan but this story was very good!

4.5 rounded up for goodreads

OH MY GOD WHAT DID I JUST READ?? This was fucked up in the best way possible, definitely not for the faint of heart 💔 idk what it says about me that I read it all in one day lol

Throughout the entire book I kept thinking it wouldn't get any darker, no author would go that far, but time after time I was proven wrong. People are violently (yet creatively) tortured, bodily fluids are spilled, appendages go in places they definitely shouldn't, and people do a fuck ton of drugs

I found myself being thoroughly engrossed (emphasis on the grossed) by the story, wanting to learn the fates of each unfortunate soul we met in this novel. Everything was extremely fast paced so there was literally no time for me to become bored, it gets into the depravity right from the prologue. The writing was great and I learnt a few new words due to this authors extensive vocabulary lol

I love this book, my only complaint is that I wish it was longer 😭 Bonus points for the cover. Can't wait to read the authors new book!!

This might be the most fucked up book I’ve read to date. It was full of music, carnage, devil worshipping, and the most offensive things you’ll ever read. Proceed with caution.

I loved it. Hail Genital Rot.

Genital Rot is a perfect extreme horror novel.

Brutal, gratuitous, and absolutely RELENTLESS, this book is the remedy for anyone who has recently been left frustrated by a meandering slow-burn and wants to read something that will kick them in the face repeatedly. Genital Rot authentically captures the intensity of death metal aesthetics in a way that is often attempted but rarely achieved, and it is an absolute pleasure to read as a fan of both extreme horror and extreme music.

This is James’ debut, and what a debut! 😲

The prologue was a hell of an introduction to this book! James does not hold back, at all! From the very beginning, to the absolute end, you are taken on one hell of a wild fucking ride!

We go on tour with the death metal band, Genital Rot, and get to indulge in their depravities and debauchery. With the help of James’ vividly described imagery, we get to feel like part of the band! Though that's not always a good thing… 😉

This band is hardcore fucked up! Brutal, savage, depraved…, all of my favourite things! The story is very fast paced, rammed with merciless action. It's insanely barbaric and full of absolute chaotic carnage and mayhem.
With a side order of sex, drugs and heavy metal. Depraved sex, that the band will do anything to get, a LOT of drugs, and a whole lotta instruments, musical and otherwise!

Sick lust and bloodlust combine to make an incredibly addictive, sick as fuck read. I couldn't put it down, (I didn't want to put it down), but now I feel dirty. I need a hot shower, scalding hot, and some bleach for my soul! 😂

This is utterly depraved, if you have ANY triggers they'll be triggered in this book, so if you're easily offended you should probably give it a miss. But for my fellow sickos, if you thought you didn't have any triggers, you may find one or two new ones here! 😁

A tale told in two parts. Two different perspectives told with the same relentless brutality and pace. The story takes a chilling, satanic turn and gets brilliantly dark and disturbing.

Genital Rot goes hard as Hell....and then some!! This goes full throttle and doesn't let up. Its gnarly as fuck and I loved it!
This book is SICK, in every sense of the word! 🤢😂

I'm hoping for an equally fucked up Encore....at the very least! 🤞

“HAIL GENITAL ROT!! 🤘”
“HAIL JAMES OLIVER!!”

I was given this book as an eARC, and I have to say it was a, shall I say pleasure without sounding demented to read. It starts off way over the top, the entire first 30% of the book is completely off the rails. When the author states he wrote the book in a drug and alcohol fueled stupor I have absolutely no reason to doubt him. However that is what makes the book rock so hard. After almost giving up on it after the first ARC I'm glad I kept reading, it became a way better book in the last 2/3.
If you have no triggers, I suggest you give this a chance. If you do have triggers please steer very very clear of this title. You'll literally be offended from page 1 until the end.

Excellent Book.

I think this is the most fucked up splat/EH horror book ive read so far... this was brutal, vile, disgusting. James Oliver, you have set out what you wanted to achieve. I was repulsed and appalled 🤣
This has all the triggers BEWARE! Many times I had to take a break... I need to read some comfy fantasy before I jump into the prequel, Sacrificial Slaughter.

5/5 for being the most fucked up. However I can't in good conscious recommend this book to anyone. Read at your own risk. 🤣

I went into Genital Rot mostly blind. I knew it involved a death metal band and... that’s about it. What I got was a chaotic, blood-soaked descent into depravity that makes The Evil Dead look like School of Rock.

The book is split into two parts. Part one reads like a fever dream—violent, disorienting, and gleefully obscene. Our introduction to the band? They're gathered around the severed head of a woman and promptly engage in a ritualistic circle jerk on four sigils from the Ars Goetia. That moment sets the tone for everything that follows.

From there, we follow the band as they commit heinous acts—some against strangers, others against people they know. There are a few pacing hiccups along the way. Certain kills are described in gruesome, vivid detail, while other scenes, like one involving an ally, fly by so quickly I had to flip back a few pages to make sure I didn’t miss something.

Part two brings stronger pacing and a clearer structure. It’s still chaotic, but the storytelling feels more grounded. That said, much of the narrative still comes off as a string of shocking events with no clear goal—until the third act, when things start to click into place. That’s when we finally learn what Genital Rot has been building toward all along.

Given its classification as extreme horror, I wasn’t expecting Genital Rot to deliver a life-changing message—and it doesn’t. But it does offer a brutal, no-holds-barred romp with a Satanic metal band doing the kind of stuff you'd expect to hear shouted over a distorted guitar riff on an old Insane Clown Posse track.

James Oliver already has the sequel lined up for a late June release, and I’ll be there for it. I need to know what further filth and fury Genital Rot has left in the tank.

this book is so amazing that it has all the tiggers your extreme horror fan is looking for, not for first-time extreme horror readers .

This book has extreme horror kills, extreme sex, rape, drug use, racism, extreme foul language, devil worshipping, and black metal vibes all packed into one novel.

this book will pull into this book from page one and won't let you go until the end, and not any spoilers ending will make say that's it I want more Gential Rot .

I highly recommend checking this book. If you are an extreme horror reader, this book isn't for those who think that Woom by Duncan Ralston is too extreme. This book is not for you.

If you can finshed reading the following novels, this book is up your alley

Cotton candy by Stuart Bray
Full nasty series by Dan Shrader
Violence of the meek series by Stuart Bray
Gothic Filth by Asher Darks
House call by Matthew Vaughn
Motel Styx by Michelle Butcher
skinn by Wrath James White

The prequel I read yesterday morning was but a taste of what to expect from this quivering pile of overindulgence. Truly, this book had every possible trigger in existence. The story itself was engaging and flowed well, without being bulletpointed like others in the genre.

The use of the word "man-auger" towards the end made me laugh and I had to subsequently try to explain to my cozy fantasy loving partner what I was reading without going into detail.

Overall, another fantastic addition to the splatterpunk/extreme horror genre. Well worth the time I spent reading and now I need to go wash my brain with bleach.

Fun side note: I found a LOT of new bands to listen to, as well as a podcast. So, that's fun.

Some of the craziest most vile filth you will lay eyes on...with a killer soundtrack.

James sure knows how to write descriptively. The countless sexual attacks and murders are all so disgusting and yet, uniquely written. New adjectives and ways to talk about such things I never knew existed! He also makes sure to drop copious amounts of amazing death/black metal music references all over the place.

I just wish the beginning third felt like it had a story. It was just pages and pages of the wildest shit ever for a while thennnn it got into more of a story. Wish that just started sooner. Once we hit story mode I read it in like one sitting.

Definitely not for the faint of heart.

Hail Genital Rot.

WHAT THE FUCK DID I JUST READ and why did I eat it up?

Zero chill and maximum mess. If Metalocalypse and A Serbian Film had a very illegal baby and raised it on visera, drugs, and bad decisions…it would be Genital Rot, a death metal band bringing absolutely ball-breaking levels of gore to a stage near you.

A salty little contemplation of two of my favorite things…horror and metal, a real head bangers ball and not for the faint of heart. I think I need to scrub my brain with comet now.

GR is a book that was hard to put down because I wanted to see what chaos the boys could get into. I enjoyed every minute of the book. It was sick and twisted in the best way possible. If I was a weaker person I would probably struggle to get through it. James didn’t hold back and I’m glad he didn’t. I can’t wait to get into the next one and see what James has in store for the band mates or at least the groupies of GR. I highly recommend this book.

The band members of genital rot are about to release their newest album. But not without a hell of a lot of carnage first!

This was utterly fucked and I loved it. Happily sat through this In one with my eyes glued to the pages wondering what was going to happen next! Loved the pacing and the whole plot as a whole. Many many triggers included with this but was like a field day for me!

Not for the faint of heart. Not for those who are offended or triggered by… anything really. Nothing is off limits.

Starts off strong and doesn’t let up at any point. A roller coaster of debauchery from the first few pages onward.

I did a quick run down to my spouse about what I was reading when I was just a few disgusting chapters in. So when I started laughing he was concerned with what I could possibly find funny in this book. The hilarious punch lines had me cackling!

Every time I read a new extreme horror, I think, wow this is the grossest.... but I've been wrong every time up to this point. The band Genital Rot ran around assaulting things so violently, it is def the most gnarly book I've read yet.

This book is brutal, grotesque, and so hard to put down. The band? Hardcore, chaotic, reckless, devil-worshipping maniacs doing the most vile things imaginable.

Honestly, I enjoyed this book way too much. James Oliver has been one of my favorite authors this year. Can't wait to read whatever chaos he drops next.

I had to pause and collect myself multiple times throughout the book- but what do you expect from a book titled genital rot?!
This book was engaging throughout its entirety- I preferred the 2nd part of the book as the writing itself seemed to really tie the story together! heavy and disturbing read, did the job well for this genre!

Ooof this is full on, it got me out of my reading slump, so thank you Mr Oliver!

This book grabs you by the throat and shouts its tale at you, and it doesn't let up until it reaches the end. Lots of violence, and a huge variety of kills, if there is a messed up way to torture and kill someone, chances are its in this book!!
