I've been writing as long as I can remember and all of my stories always held a thread of romance (even when I was writing about a prince who could shoot lasers out of his eyes). I love creating unique characters, love giving them happy endings and I even love the voices in my head. There's no other job I would rather be doing. In September 2002, when I got the call that Silhouette Desire wanted to buy my first book, Desert Warrior, it was a dream come true. I hope to continue living the dream until I keel over of old age on my keyboard.

I was born in Fiji and raised in New Zealand. I also spent three years living and working in Japan, during which time I took the chance to travel around Asia. I’m back in New Zealand now, but I’m always plotting new trips. If you’d like to see some of my travel snapshots, have a look at the Travel Diary page (updated every month).

So far, I've worked as a lawyer, a librarian, a candy factory general hand, a bank temp and an English teacher and not necessarily in that order. Some might call that inconsistency but I call it grist for the writer's mill.

Sascha has convinced Lucas that they need to go for shopping diapers for their newborn baby.

“We don’t need diapers. We have enough to diaper the entire nursery school,” Sascha muttered, moving on to the oranges. “Touch this, Lucas. I love how it feels.”
He did, enjoying seeing the world through her eyes. Never, he thought, would Sascha lose her wonder in sensation, not after having been deprived of it for so very long. “You told me we needed to come out to buy diapers,” he said with a straight face, realizing she’d forgotten her fib.
A pause. “Did I?” Smile innocent, she took his hand. “I think Naya wants you to talk to her.”
His panther was impressed with her sneakiness. “You’re a cat under that Psy skin, Sascha darling.”

Author's Note
This small vignette slots in during the peaceful lull after Kiss of Snow, soon after Naya’s birth, and while Lucas and Sascha are still living in the cabin below their aerie.

It's a fun and sweet glimpse into the lives of the characters in a quiet moment in the midst of the often chaotic and staggering changes currently shaking their world. It's one of those moments we never see in a book, but that is part of the everyday fabric of the characters lives. I love writing these, and I hope you enjoy reading them.

If you’re new to the Psy-Changeling series, this story features Lucas (alpha of the DarkRiver leopards and a man who shifts into a black panther in his animal form), and Sascha (Lucas’s mate and a cardinal empath - she has the power to heal wounds of the heart, to take the most painful of emotions and neutralize them).

***

Slave to Sensation, Sascha and Lucas' story is the first book in the Psy-Changeling series which I loved and fell in love with Nalini's writing and the series.

“Your mother,” he whispered to Naya as Sascha frowned at a bunch of spinach, “is the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.”

He felt a curious mental touch, knew it was his daughter. “Of course you’re the prettiest girl.” And a piece of his heart that existed outside his body. As it did with Sascha."

Sascha, Lucas and Naya are all just so cute together! I love getting a glimpse at their normal day to day life & seeing how they're obviously crazy about each other even when doing something so everyday as the weekly shop!

Nice but thoroughly "meh" and bland. A little too sweet and flat for my taste.

Sascha teases Lucas into a grocery story outing with his girls and it was a sweet short story of her delight in using her senses at the store and Lucas's delight in seeing both his girls happy.

Ahhhh!

One of the short vignettes that Singh provides for free for fans of her Psy-Changeling series. This story is about Sascha and Lucas and their baby daughter going grocery shopping. Like so many of these stories, it shows the simple, normal lives of the characters away from the drama of the novels. Cute and sweet and gives a different glimpse into this new family.

A "free short story, 10.3, in the Psy-Changeling paranormal romance series and revolving around Lucas, Sascha, and baby Naya. If you're interested, there is a chronological listing of the Psy-Changeling books on my website.

My Take
Poor Lucas. Singh starts it out "right" with Sascha making him give up a treasured moment, so the family can go shopping...can't ya just "feel" the love, lol.

Singh uses a third person dual point-of-view from Sascha's and Lucas' perspectives...there's almost a sense of Naya's perspective, too. And it's all about the love that the characters have for each other, pulling us in even further into this caring, supportive family. Makes ya wish more families could be this focused on their children.

It does amaze me how much emotion and story Singh can pack into so few pages, admittedly, I'm probably reading more into it simply because I have been reading the series all along. I know how fascinating something as simple as grocery shopping can be for someone like Sascha with her background.

In a more subtle way, the grocery shopping is just as fascinating for Lucas, as he enjoys his family and their pleasure. I did have to crack up after Lucas' conversation with Theo on the shopping topic. I can't imagine there are many men who would feel this way, lol.

The Story
It's a familiar "chore", that Sascha Duncan finds fascinating, which in turn, causes Lucas to find it fascinating as well.

The Characters
Sascha Duncan is a cardinal empath mated to Lucas Hunter, the DarkRiver alpha, a panther. Naya is their newborn baby.

Faith NightStar is a cardinal foreteller mated to Vaughn D'Angelo ( Visions of Heat , 2), a jaguar and a sentinel in the DarkRiver pack of leopards.

Theo, a deer changeling, is one of the more dominant bulls; he and his mate have a daughter and a newborn boy.

The Title
The title is a mundane chore with which we're all familiar: "Grocery Shopping".

“Grocery Shopping” is a short story of only about six pages that takes place sometime after Kiss of Snow in the Psy-Changeling series chronology. It’s a cute, little, slice-of-life scene in which Lucas, Sascha, and baby Naya perform the seemingly mundane task of grocery shopping that turns out to be anything but. I love how Lucas pretends to dislike shopping, but deep down he’s actually cool with it and will do anything to make his mate happy. He’s so loving and protective of Naya, too. I also like how checking out all the food is still a sensory experience for Sascha who’d been denied that all her life until meeting and falling in love with Lucas. Overall, this is yet another sweet, feel-good, between-the-books story from Ms. Singh who has a knack for turning even the most ordinary things into something special.

I’m just…..the number of times I’ve said I could read about my favourite characters/OTP going to the grocery store and here is Nalini, just giving it to me, which turns out to be a regular thing for a lot in this series btw. Anyway, the Duncan-Hunter fam is such a mushy family who love each other way too much for me not to be openly grinning while reading these small snippets.

Sascha insist on going grocery shopping against Lucas wishes. Shows her enjoyment of sensory and everyday experience, Lucas runs into deer changeling dad and they talk about how much the secretly enjoy going taking their family to the store. This is such utterly fake wish fulfillment. No one enjoys going to the grocery store.

Grocery shopping from Lucas' point of view, reminded me why I fell in love with this couple and this series. No matter how short or long the story Nalini Singh brings your right into her world. The love and care Lucas shows to his mate and child are definitely sigh worthy.

Luego del nacimiento de Naya, Sascha, quien descubrimos tiene un amor por ir de compras (aunque sean las de comestibles), logra persuadir a Lucas de llevarla... si solo supiera que a él le encanta verla comprar cosas.

I think if I'd not been allowed any pleasure in food I'd be like Sascha and love going to the grocery store. It's not something I'm fond of in my life but I can see the appeal for her. Another cute 'everyday' insight into Sascha and Lucas' life as new parents!
