A perfect gift for the baker in your family -- and for yourself, if you are a Cookie Monster like me. Boasts more than 200 recipes of every kind of cookie you can imagine. The cover, which reminds me of a giant chocolate chip cookie, is cloth-covered. I still would have preferred a color cover of the most gorgeous cookies ever. But that's just me. Still highly recommended!
This book was a great collection of recipes and techniques on how to bake the perfect cookie. And if there is anything I love, it’s a cookie and a book! The pictures were beautifully done and the recipes were easy to follow. I really enjoyed the mix of comfort flavors and ones that are new or push you out of your baking comfort zone.
I look forward to testing the recipes at home, especially the lemon crinkle cookies and heidesand. Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This is a marvelous cookie recipe book perfect for anyone with an interest in baking! There are classics and some recipes unique to this book. The instructions are easy to follow and the photos throughout are awesome! There are too many I want to try to list but I'm excited to start trying recipes from this! This is a fantastic recipe book that I would highly recommend! Everything looks delectable and I cannot wait to make a bunch of recipes this holiday season. Spoiler alert, everyone is getting cookies for Christmas! #COOKIES #NetGalley
Book Review: COOKIES: The Classics by The Coastal Kitchen
Rating: 4 Stars
I picked up COOKIES: The Classics by The Coastal Kitchen because, honestly, how could I resist a book that promises more than 200 cookie recipes and has a cloth cover that actually feels nice to hold? I’m a big cookie fan and a regular baker, so I went in hoping for inspiration—and I left with a stack of new ideas and a very pretty book to leave on my counter.
At its heart this is a very solid collection of favorites: chewy chocolate chip, snappy ginger cookies, crumbly shortbread, and plenty of festive shapes for holidays. The range is broad enough that whether I wanted simple weekday cookies or something a bit more ornate for company, there was a recipe to match. There are also a number of thoughtful, slightly unexpected variations that make some classic recipes feel fresh without straying too far from what you expect. Most recipes are clearly written and easy to follow, so you don’t need to be a pro to get great results.
The book itself is designed to be enjoyed as much as the cookies it contains. The cloth-bound cover and tidy layout make it a handsome presence on my kitchen counter (or coffee table), and the photography is appetizing enough to make me want to bake everything I flip to. The photos aren’t just decorative—they give you a good sense of texture and portioning, which I appreciated when deciding which recipe to try first.
Why four stars instead of five? While the book is wonderfully curated and approachable, it doesn’t feel revolutionary. If you’re deeply familiar with cookie cookbooks, you won’t find many mind-blowing discoveries here—rather, you’ll find a very well-executed anthology of the classics with a few creative twists. A touch more guidance on substitutions or dietary variations (gluten-free, dairy-free options) would have made it even more practical for everyday use.
All in all, COOKIES: The Classics is a lovely, well-made volume that belongs in the library of anyone who likes to bake (or eat) cookies. It’s an excellent gift, attractive on a table, and reliable in the kitchen. I’ll definitely keep it handy when I want a dependable recipe and a little bit of inspiration.
⚠️This review was written based on personal opinions and experiences with the book. Individual preferences may vary⚠️
Let me start by saying, I absolutely love baking cookies. So when I came across Cookies: The Classics by The Coastal Kitchen, I knew I had to give it a try. This cookbook is a celebration of timeless recipes that never go out of style, presented with a fresh, modern touch.
One of the standout features is the photography. Nearly every recipe comes with a gorgeous shot, which not only serves as a helpful reference for what you’re working toward but also makes the book a joy to flip through. The layout itself, with its dark brown background and white text, isn’t entirely to my taste since it can feel a bit heavy compared to the light, bright images, but the pictures themselves more than make up for it.
The recipes strike a nice balance. On one hand, you have the classics we all know and love, like brown butter chocolate chip cookies and Meyer lemon crinkle cookies, while on the other, you’ll find creative twists that feel fresh and unexpected. This makes the book approachable for beginners who want to start with the basics, while also offering something interesting for more advanced bakers looking to experiment. The instructions are clear and easy to follow, with measurements conveniently provided in both cups/tbsps/tsps and ml/g units. This makes the recipes accessible no matter your baking style or location, and it helps ensure consistency in results.
Overall, Cookies: The Classics is a must-have for anyone who enjoys baking. It respects tradition while sprinkling in just enough innovation to keep things fun, all while keeping the process straightforward and rewarding. Definitely looking forward to trying out some of these recipes soon!
Okay, so you have to hear about this book I just read, COOKIES: The Classics by The Coastal Kitchen. It's 369 pages of pure cookie heaven. Honestly, if you're even slightly into baking (or just love the idea of filling your house with the smell of cookies fresh out of the oven), this one's for you.
From the moment I opened it, I was hooked. It's the kind of book that feels like it was made to live on your kitchen counter, with gorgeous photography, a super-easy-to-navigate layout, and a design that makes you want to try every single recipe. You don't just flip through this book—you drool through it.
There are numerous recipes in here, covering everything from the classic old-fashioned chewy chocolate chip (my go-to) to more adventurous bakes, like a vanilla and matcha cookie that I'm eager to try. And when I spotted the ANZAC biscuit in there? My heart. Being Aussie, that cookie is a family classic, and I loved seeing it in the mix with a few new twists that still honoured the original.
What I really appreciate is how this book doesn't talk down to beginners but also doesn't bore seasoned bakers. It's got that sweet spot where you can be a total novice or a pro and still find plenty of inspiration.
It's not just a cookbook, it's a cookie experience. I already know I'll be gifting this to a few people come Christmas.
Thank you, NetGalley and Cider Mill Press, for providing me with the e-ARC in exchange for my honest review. This one is going to make its way into my kitchen library.
As a self-proclaimed cookie fanatic, I thought I’d seen it all when it comes to cookie cookbooks, after all, my shelves are stacked with them. But COOKIES, with its stunning cloth-covered design and over 200 artfully curated recipes, has completely won me over and raised the bar. This isn’t just another cookbook; it’s a love letter to the humble cookie, blending classic comfort with creative flair in a way that feels fresh and inspiring, whether you’re a novice baker or a seasoned pro like me. From the moment I opened its beautifully crafted pages, I was hooked, bookmarking recipes faster than I could preheat my oven.
The range of recipes is what sets this book apart. over half were new to me, despite years of baking everything from snickerdoodles to macarons. You’ll find timeless favorites like chewy chocolate chip cookies alongside sophisticated treats perfect for gifting or holiday gatherings, like spiced ginger snaps and buttery shortbread with elegant twists. The recipes are clear, approachable, and packed with tips that make even the fancier ones doable. Add to that the gorgeous photos that practically beg you to start baking, COOKIES isn’t just a cookbook; it’s a joyful celebration of baking that makes every cookie feel like a little moment of happiness. I’ll be baking from this gem all year long.
Many thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an advanced, digital copy in exchange for an honest review.
"Cookies" by The Coastal Kitchen is a beautifully crafted book that instantly inspires you to preheat the oven and start baking. The recipes are wonderfully presented with stylish, sumptuous photos that make every page a delight to look through. There’s a really enjoyable variety of cookies, mostly from across the Western world, giving a lovely international touch to home baking.
I especially appreciated how the book is divided into charming sections like Drop Everything, Have a Ball, and Cut It Out. Each category feels well thought out and easy to navigate. The introduction is another strong point—it includes some great technical tips and insights. The brief section about different types of vanilla was particularly intriguing; I’ve always loved vanilla but never realized how much variety there is to explore.
The inclusion of metric measurements is a huge help, eliminating the hassle of conversions. Recipes like Piroulines and Heidesand bring back fond childhood memories, while so many others have already been added to my must-try list. I was also happy to find several gluten-free options, making it easy to share these treats with friends and coworkers. My daughter caught sight of the book and has already bookmarked a few recipes to try at her upcoming sleepover.
Thank you to Cider Mill Press, NetGalley and The Coastal Kitchen for an advance reading copy of this book.
Cookies The Classics is a nice collection curated and collected by the Coastal Kitchen. Released 4th Nov 2025 by Cider Mill Press, it's 368 pages and is available in hardcover and ebook formats.
The collection runs the gamut from comfort quick-bake classics like shortbread, chocolate chip (and variations), peanut butter, and thumbprint cookies to really involved, fancy, polished haute cuisine with a wide variety of finishes and glazes. Recipes are arranged thematically: dropped cookies, cookie-cutter, balled dough, cookie-press, and bar/sheet cookies.
Recipes are written with yields and background/intro followed by ingredients in a bullet list along with step-by-step instructions. Ingredient measures are provided in imperial (American) units, with metric units in parentheses (yay!). Most ingredients will be readily accessible at any well-stocked grocery store in North America.
The photos are standout and appealing (and in color) throughout. It's an encyclopedic cookie book with 160 recipes (and many many variations on finishes and glazes).
Five stars. It would be an excellent choice for public or school library acquisition, as well as the home kitchen collection.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
I love a cookbook and this one was no exception! Some particular highlights worth mentioning:
- There were good shots of most recipes in this book. It’s nice to have a reference of what you're working towards and is visually appealing just to flip through. - The instructions seem easy to follow. I think this would be approachable for a beginner but also offer something interesting to a more advanced baker. - There is a nice balance of tried and true favorites (chocolate chip cookies will forever have my heart) and recipes with new ideas (it has never once occurred to me to put quinoa in a cookie) - Measurement are given in American and metric options - Numerous gluten free options!
I’m excited to try out some of these recipes and would be thrilled to add a hard copy of this book to my personal collection when it hits shelves.
Thanks to Netgalley for an eARC copy. All opinions are entirely my own.
I fully admit I have a bit of an addiction to cookbooks and recipe books. I am the target audience. The target audience is me. The cover alone, gorgeous in its simplicity, made me want it instantly. This book is a celebration of the versatility of cookies (though I will forever maintain that gooey, partially baked cookies are the superior cookie).
Inside, you’ll find both tried-and-true favorites and flavor combinations I never would have thought to try. It showcases cookies from cultures around the world, from fortune cookies to linzer cookies, all with beautiful photography for nearly every (though not all) recipe.
I especially loved the playful category names (drop everything, cut it out, have a ball, pressing matters, raise the bar) and the thoughtful, practical organization overall. It’s as much fun to flip through as it is to bake from.
Thank you to NetGalley, Cider Mill Press, and the Coastal Kitchen for this advanced copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
Cookies the Classics is chock full of everything you wanted and didn’t know you needed related to cookies. Familiar recipes alongside new ones will captivate your taste buds and leave you looking for ways to possibly try them all. I love that it starts with tips and essentials you need to know to help lead to the best possible results. There are all types of cookies covered, drop, cut outs, balls, presses, and bars. The pictures range from whimsical, poignant, inspirational, and delectable. Ingredients are provided in standard form as well as volume and weight. Recipes are from all over the world and there are gluten free options included. Additionally, you will find sweet, salty, savory, chewy, crunchy, healthier, holiday themed, and others I know I am leaving out. This is absolutely a book I want in my library and adore the added touch of a cloth cover. I received a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley and all opinions expressed are solely my own, freely given.
COOKIES is exactly what it sounds like - a cookbook full of cookie recipes. As a baking fanatic, this was an immediate choice when it was offered on NetGalley as a read now option. I immediately started picking out things to make for different occasions and was pleased that there are several gluten free options so I wouldn't have to experiment to make the recipe come out correctly for me. The pictures in the book are gorgeous and mouth watering...which was a bit of a problem since I read it when I was hungry! I liked that the book is a mix of standard classics, staples from other countries, and pairings that I haven't had. The book is broken up into several categories: drop everything, cut it out, have a ball, pressing matters, raise the bar, and an appendix with topping/fillings. The biggest problem with this book was having to choose which recipe to try out first!

When I saw that this book was about I cookies I had to get it (as a seasoned baker myself). Upon opening the book you have the introduction and afterwards get some really nice tips and techniques for baking, that can be especially helpful if you’re just starting.
The design is beautifully made yet simple and the recipes are easy to follow, thanks to the good instructions! My personal highlight of this book are the pictures and their quality. Not every recipe has one, but the ones that are in the book are really good looking!
The overlay of the recipes is really nice, because you get the ingredients on one side and the instructions on the other. You get cookies from different countries (e.g. Lebkuchen oder Heidesand, some German staples) and different metrics for the measurements. You can use cups but also grams - such a plus! You only have to find out the temperature of the oven yourself, seeing it’s only given in Fahrenheit.
All in all a great book with a lot of different recipes. Surely there’ll be one for everyone in here, gluten-free options included! (My personal favorite is the White chocolate chip & macadamia cookie.)
How can the same basic ingredients--butter, sugar, eggs, flour--result in so many enticing variations. COOKIES offers dozens of recipes and after reading it, I want to bake my way through every one. I was drawn in immediately by the clever table of contents that breaks down recipes by cookie type: drop, rolled and cut, pressed, balls, and bars. There are cookies to keep on hand for a quick snack or unexpected guests, special occasion cookies, and gluten-free cookies. The recipes in COOKIES will appeal to beginning and experienced bakers alike and satisfy a demanding sweet tooth.
There is one downside: I am left wondering who is behind The Coastal Kitchen, as the book lists no specific authors nor acknowledgements. I'm hopeful it's not an AI generated manuscript that has not credited the original creators of the recipes.
Thank you to NetGalley and Cider Mill Press for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is a delightful cookie book that took me by surprise! I wanted more, and more, like a baking fanatic, on a binge, and the book delivers with over 200 recipes! I wanted to bake my way through the book as I read the recipes. I'm impressed with not only the volume of recipes, but also the variety! There's the classics, but also so much more with recipes from around the world! I was in cookie heaven! The book is broken down into Drop Cookies, Rolled & Cut Cookies, Pressed, (pressed, piped, and cookie ball recipes), and Bars (which also includes Brownies and Blondies), and a specular and surprising appendix, containing recipes such as; Caramel Sauce, Salted Toffee, Caramelized White Chocolate & other goodies that will raise the bar even more on the gems contained within its cover. This is one of the Best Cookie books I have come across in a while! Bravo!
Cookies is a beautiful cookbook filled with many color photos of tempting looking cookies. It is a huge compilation of cookie recipes starting with drop cookies, moving on to cut outs, balls and bars. There are recipes from all over the world and for many diets, including some gluten-free, dairy-free and egg-free varieties. My main criticisms of the book are 1. the photos do not always match the recipe (extra ingredients are pictured in cookies, but not included in recipes), and 2. the measurements of the ingredients are fussy if you don't have a kitchen scale (which the author said was necessary). As a professional baker, I can guarantee that most of the cookies will not come out like the photos. If you are looking for cookie inspiration, this is a great book, but if you are looking for recipes, don't bother.
I received a free advance reader copy. All opinions are my own.
Netgalley ARC- There are millions of cookie recipes out there, however the ones contained here are some of the tastier ones. Good high-quality photos of most of the recipes to make you drool and easy enough directions for the entire spectrum of bakers. A couple of things keep me from giving it a full five. One, there are a few recipes where they chose to print the directions first, on the left page, and the ingredient list on the right page. Second, the choice of colors for the pages leaves something to be desired. I'm sure they thought, 'ooo chocolate brown for a baking cookbook, how cute!' except it makes it hard to read the white font. Otherwise, it's definitely a good little gem for all cookie lovers.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. The advice in the essential tips and techniques and the ingredients section can be really useful to people new to baking or especially new to making cookies. The sections titles seem a little strange but the paragraph below did explain it a little with cut it out being those made with a cookie cutter. I did like the fact that there were bar recipes at the end although it does make the book being titled simply cookies a little misleading with the final chapter being on other bakes such as brownies and cheesecake bars.
COOKIES: The Classics by The Coastal Kitchen is a delightful celebration of everyone’s favorite treat! This cookbook takes timeless cookie recipes—like chocolate chip, shortbread, and snickerdoodles—and gives them a fresh, elegant twist. The instructions are clear, the photos are absolutely gorgeous, and the results are bakery-quality every time. I love how it balances nostalgic comfort with elevated flavor combinations. A must-have for home bakers, holiday gift-givers, or anyone who believes there’s no such thing as too many cookies!
Thank you to NetGalley and Cider Mill Press for the advanced copy.
Beautiful pictures; the cookies look delicious. I appreciate the variety of cookies included. The cookies are separated by their shaping method, which I liked. I hadn't heard of some of the cookies before, so that was nice to see. There were several variations of chocolate chip cookies, also. The recipes look straightforward and easily readable. I think some of the formatting was a bit off in the digital review copy, but it was fine for the most part. This would be good for someone looking to try more specialized cookies or some traditional cookies from other countries (mostly European).
First, this book is just pretty and is something you want to see on your shelf. Chic yet eye-catching. Open the pages and get inspired with a vast array of cookies with great pictures to get you craving cookies and ready to bake!
There is a great photo to accompany every recipe, allowing you to flip the pages and just look for something that catches your eye. The recipes themselves are easy to follow, approachable with commonly found ingredients. Not just for the holidays, you will find sweet treats to make throughout the year.
Okay, I have a seriously sweet tooth so please do not take recipe advice from me. lol😳 This book would go nicely beside my Muffins book. There are so many different types of cookie recipes in this book for all different tastes. I can’t wait to try the ones with pumpkin! I may also try making a couple of the lavender ones. I did try a lavender cake recipe once and I don’t recommend that. lol however, I do recommend this book though. 👍🏻
Make some cookies to sit and scoff while reading, perfect 👌🏻 🍪 📖 ☕️
I absolutely love this cookbook! Cookies are some of my preferred food items. I can have them any time of day or night. This book covers so many kinds of cookies including all of my personal favourites: Classic Sugar Cookies, Linzer, White Chocolate and Macademia , Triple Chocolate and Black & White among so many more.
I’m happy to recommend this book to all cookies lovers out there. You won’t be disappointed!
Thank you NetGalley and Cider Mill Press for allowing me to review this book (a few times) in exchange for my honest opinion.

I must say I was expecting more traditional cookies and what I found was a huge array of different cultures of cookies, unique flavors. Has a good amount of gluten free alts. I'm definitely going to be trying probably half of these over time. berries, fruits nuts matcha chocolate name it there's a cookie with it. back gives topping filling recipes and conversation charts.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC of this book! I absolutely fell in love with it and will definitely be buying my own copy. I can’t wait to bake the cookies I’ve loved before, and I’m just as excited to try the new recipes I’ve never made.
