After the strange back-translated #46, back to genuine Ken Bulmer. Noticeably smoother. I wonder if things are running out of steam, though. One of the things that I always admired about this series is how Bulmer managed a really long planetary adventure series -- after all the daddy of them all, Burroughs' Mars books, started getting repetitious around #4. The Prescot books generally have three arcs going at once: the current book, the "cycle" of 3-5 books, and the overall arc of Prescot's career, with progressive revelation of the underlying grand plan of the Star Lords. Usually any given book has a satisfying story on its own, contributes to the cycle, and advances the grand plot a bit. This one has great battles and even more of the Prescot humor (I laughed out loud once, but don't remember exactly what at); it advanced the cycle plot but wasn't particularly a good story on its own (yes, typical "middle of the trilogy" problem, but usually Bulmer has avoided that); and didn't seem to have much of the Grand Plot at all.
I'll certainly finish out the series and be sad that there won't be any more.
