Eli’s sworn off irresponsible flirts, and Arjun’s one of the worst—aggravating, provoking, and everything Eli can’t resist.

After fifteen years in the military, Eli Reynolds has returned to San Francisco with broken dreams and a broken heart, courtesy of his now ex-boyfriend. He’s determined to avoid anyone like his cheating ex—which means steering clear of Tabletop Tavern’s resident flirt, Arjun Gupta.

Arjun wants a break. Ever since he added his grandmother’s nursing home to his monthly bills, he’s drowning in debt. On top of his job as chef at Tabletop Tavern, he’s been stripping at nights to cover the extra costs. She’s worth every sleepless hour, but he’s desperate for relief—of any sort. Too bad Tabby’s cousin Eli is too high and mighty for a fling.

Eli and Arjun can’t seem to avoid each other, and with each collision they realize more and more that they might have misjudged—especially when all those sparks spill over into something hot and unforgettable. However, when Eli’s folks decide to move across the country, Eli needs to remain in the place that reminds him of his failures or start over fresh—and if Arjun isn’t here for keeps, Eli can’t risk his heart to stay.

Roll the dice on romance at Tabletop Tavern…

Second read through on audio: I loved these boys so much and it did not change at all on the second time around. Such an amazing story that I absolutely recommend. And the audio was fantastic! Excellent narrator! One line will stick in my head! Super 🥵!!

Wow! I made so many notes while reading this book I don't even know where to start with my review! Arjun and Eli's story has now become my favourite book so far in the Dungeons and Dating series (sorry Cal and Julian)! This is probably one of the lighter books in this series but by no means were there no tough topics discussed (trigger warnings for depression and illness of loved one).

Right from the very start there was so much humour in this book from all sides. Loved the first line! Arjun's grandmother has to be one of the funniest little old lady side characters I have ever come across!

I've discovered a theme in this series that even though the crew at Tabletop Tavern is a found family, it takes a while for the characters to really let everyone else in but when they do wow! I was in tears in the epilogue of this book. Arjun is an amazing character who tries way too hard to get through everything on his own. It was amazing to see him finally have people to depend on other than his grandmother.

I loved Eli in Constitution Check so I was super excited that he was an MC in this book. Eli just got out of the military and is having a hard time finding his purpose in life. Before this book I never really thought about how anyone would feel leaving the service and having to essentially start over again in life if they had the same situation as Eli. I can imagine why he struggled with the issues that he did. I loved that he finally found someone and something that will make him happy!

These two characters together, let me tell you are super 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥! This is definitely the hottest book so far in this series and one of the hottest I've read by this author! Their first kiss was amazing! Besides that they just make such a great pairing with their bickering back and forth and they just seem to balance each other so well. One of my favourite scenes in this book was when Eli discovered what Arjun's other job was!!

Some random side notes:
-Was brought back to my younger days 😉 with the Aqua mentions!
-Why does everyone always hate on Mysterium! I had to look this game up and it sounds super fun 😂
-Poor Mason and Hunter, making unnecessary complications for the couples in this book AND Constitution Check!
-I loved meeting Matt and I'm soooo excited to read Jasper and Matt's story next!

This whole series is fantastic and I absolutely recommend this book to anyone looking for a story about found family, a hilarious loving grandmother, a super cute stray pit bull and super steamy adventures!

This is the first book I've read by this author and I really enjoyed it. I'm not a gamer so I didn't understand when they talked about gaming but it wasn't integral to the story and it wasn't often that the characters got together to game and it didn't interfere with my enjoyment of the story.

I like stories where one of the MC's is "hiding" something that is a good thing/trait as long as it doesn't go on too long. The author timed this just right. Arjun was having to work 2 jobs to pay for his grandmother's nursing home. Eli thinks he's just a flirt and not a serious person until he discovers him at his 2nd job and uncovers his secret. From that point, they were on the same wavelength.

I didn't read the previous books in the series but it didn't affect my enjoyment of this book so I definitely think it can be read as a standalone. And I definitely plan to check out other books by this author.

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.

[I received a digital arc for an honest review]

Dexterity Check
is a standalone in the Dungeons and Dating series by Katherine McIntyre. A series with gaming loving characters, steam, and a whole lot of heart.

Arjun is a chef at the Tabletop Tavern and also a stripper in order to make enough to afford for his grandmother, the woman who raised him, to stay at a care facility. He over works himself and doesn't have any time for more than the occasional hook-up. When he propositions Eli at a club and is turned down, the two have less than friendly feelings towards each other. Eli, recently discharged, is attempting to adjust to civilian life. He's sick of one-night stands and turns Arjun down because he wants a real relationship. He volunteers at a nursing home spending time with vets, and it happens to be the same one Arjun's grandmother is at. Their paths keep crossing and the more time they spend in eachothers orbit, the more intense the sexual tension. Eli witnessing Arjun perform on stage tips the scale for Eli. He accepts Arjun's offer of no strings attached hook up , especially when there's a chance he'll be moving soon. It isn't long until both side have feelings and have to face whether they have a future together.

Eli took him apart with kisses that alternated from consuming to tender, every move so deliberate he could scream.

Arjun and Eli are both solid characters. Arjun uses flirting and sass to distract from how run down he is and to protect his heart. Eli brings mental health to the table with his struggle with depression and adapting to civilian life. They both carry around the idea that they are unworthy of long term love. I loved the banter and bickering between them, not including the fantastic sexual tension that builds between them until it comes to a head. When Eli finally gives into the attraction between them, it's explosive and deliciously steamy. I loved that the push and pull between them continued into the bedroom and that them being together didn't change the way they interacted with each other, but involved to also include terms of endearment.

The taste of this man was so sweet, fucking perfection, and his mind dizzied with the power of their connection. Every single time he was blown away.

Dexterity Check
is a great addition to the Dungeons and Dating series . A romance filled with found family, D&D night, europop, hiking, energy drinks, friendships, sexual tension, steam, a private strip tease, sexual innuendos, emotions, a stray pup, and two people figuring out their futures.

I love that this series is a mix of all sorts of queer couples - FF, MM, and M-NB to name a few, and that's just going off the blurbs because I haven't read the others yet. (YET being the key word!) So many series are all MF or all MM or all FF, and I love that this queer friend group is a mix of genders and sexualities and pairings. It just feels so much more realistic, like this could be a real group of friends and their stories. (Side note: I would LOVE to be friends with these nerds! Please adopt me. *big sad puppy eyes*)

Arjun was immediately a favorite of mine. As someone who has all of one good friend who I'd actually call if I needed something and a billion friends who are more acquaintances, I complete understand the type of loneliness and isolation he feels. My heart HURT for him so many times, especially in his interactions with Eli where Arjun puts up his f*ckboy mask and just lets Eli assume the worst of him because he doesn't know how to be vulnerable. Gah, my heart!

I love the sort of enemies to lovers light vibe between Eli and Arjun. When they first met Arjun hit Eli up for a hookup, but Eli was going through a nasty breakup with someone who cheated on him and was very anti-hookup culture, and so they both sort of got a chip on their shoulder about the other. So not really ENEMIES, but there's that antagonism there - especially with how Arjun keeps putting on his mask a little extra hard around Eli and pushing him to further antagonistic feelings.

But gosh, these two dummies keep getting pushed together and slowly start to see the person beneath the surface and realize that hey, they actually really *like* that person hiding under there. Swoon. I do wish Eli's depression had been better addressed, especially how he's dealing with it. There's a liiiiiittle bit of the Magic Peen moment going on, though the author does specifically say that Eli's relationship doesn't magically make his depression all better and that he's taking steps to work on it, or something like that. I'd have really liked to see him get professional help and get into therapy or on an anti-depressant (because sometimes, yes, meds ARE the answer! So many characters with mental illnesses end up in therapy as part of their personal journey, but you almost never read about a character starting meds or switching meds to get on the right ones. ...Clearly not something I have FEELINGS about, haha!)

This is the fifth book in the Dungeons and Dating series, and can be read as a stand-alone. Couples from the previous books are in this one as side characters, but nothing jumped out at me as a major spoiler for earlier books. This was the first book I read in this series, but I'm definitely going back to read the first four now. I can't wait for Jasper's book, Charisma Check, coming in May 2023!

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are unbiased and my own.

Enjoyed it

So this was probably 4.5 stars for me but I’ve rounded up!

This is the first book in this series I’ve read so I would say it absolutely can be read as a stand-alone, although I would say you have less understanding of some of the side characters from previous books.

That said, this was a really great book and I enjoyed reading it. I loved how we slowly got to learn more about Eli and Arjun as the story developed and it was great to see them finding their path.

Nani is just the best and I absolutely want to be her when I’m older. She absolutely cracked me up. Altogether this was a really good book and I enjoyed it. This is definitely an author I will look out for in future.

I finished Dexterity Check, and I absolutely loved the story! I laughed and I cried as Argun and Eli fumbled their way into a relationship that started as tolerating each other to friends with benefits and then to a love that would last a lifetime. There is also a stray dog that makes you smile and want to wrap your arms around him and hug real tight. This was a wonderful story of family and found family that gave support and love no matter what the situation. Both characters have issues but together they make a whole that absolutely meshes perfectly together, and I recommend this book to everyone to read. There will be tears but happy ones at the end when you find the love of your life and a purpose to your life as well!

DEXTERITY CHECK is the fifth book in the Dungeons and Dating series, and really needs to be read in order to get the full benefit. This is a 5-star series, simple as that.

The thing I adore about this author is, that no matter which book I'm reading, it's always my favourite. Does that mean I'm fickle? I'd like to think not. I'd like to think her writing is just that good! This series has been a hit with me from the beginning, and each book is on my "To Buy as Paperback/Hardback" list as I need to have the real thing.

Arjun and Eli balance each other out in so many ways but are both too stubborn to admit it. So similar in so many ways, and yet it is the differences that make them work so well together.

I will say this was a highly emotional book for me. First one strike (Arjun), then another (Eli), and then the final one (Arjun). Three strikes and I was down. Eyes leaking with no end in sight. Those damned Care Bears have done it again. I won't give any clues because you need to read it for yourself.

This has been a fantastic book and I really don't want it to be over. Only one more book to go and then it looks like re-reads are in my future. Ten out of five stars for sheer brilliance. A MUST-READ!!!

This is a book with a great deal of character development and a plot that is complicated but quite well carried out.

Eli is the older but can't make up his mind whether he wants to move with his parents or stay in the San Francisco area where he is close to his cousin. He is also fearful of failure - his idea of being a Vet, not progressing in the military, an ex who left him out of the military so when a younger guy propositions him he turns hi down

They keep running into each other - at the place where the younger guy is a chef and at his part-time go-go location as well as at the long-term care home where the younger fellow's grandmother is located. They agree to date until the decision of whether to move to New England but become more attached as Eli sees depth in his lover.

The decision is made not to move and there is an HEA ending.

This is a new author to me but I really enjoyed reading this. Although it is a stand alone but also a part of a series but it was easy to get the meaning of the other side characters. In this story we meet two very different people but somehow they fit perfectly together. Arjun is a sassy and fun guy but he is working himself too hard to pay for his beloved grandmother's nursing home and 10 year older Eli who have just come out of the army after 15 years. Eli is trying to get over his cheating ex and what to do with his life. Arjun and Eli keep running into each other and there a lot of flirting and they finally give into the attraction and chemistry. It was supposed to be a friend's with benefit arrangement but they quickly grow closer. I thought their relationship was sweet and I adored Arjun's grandmother.

This is the first book in this series I have read. It was amazing, easy to read and follow along even though I haven’t read any of the others. Arjun and Sedrick hit me with all the feels. They’re both well rounded, amazing characters. Their characters jump off the pages and you can help but feel their highs and lows along with them. I shed a few tears throughout this amazing story.

What a fantastic read! Arjun may have turned into my favourite character with his snarky attitude that perfectly covers up his hurting and lonely insides. Eli is the one to sneak through his defenses but it takes a while before they move from 'enemies' to lovers until something more.
There's a fair amount of hurt/comfort here for both men. Arjun is being weighed down under the pressure of paying for his grandmother's care home, having to work two jobs. With only his grandmother in his life, he won't tell anyone his troubles. Eli is back home from fifteen years in the army with a recently bad break up and now a decision to be made about whether to stay in San Francisco or move to Boston with his parents.
The back and forth between these two is a lot of fun. There's a lot of assumptions made on both parts as they pretend on what they want or how they're doing. It's actually Nani, Arjun's grandmother, who influences the start of the change between them. And then when they finally connect, phew! Their chemistry is off the charts and then there's no stopping things developing further.
There's a strong emotional element to the story, bringing a lot of feelings to the front. You can sense the connection the author has to her characters as they and their story are brought to life. The lows are balanced out with the highs, though, as the two grow closer and when they're around the found family that is the crew at the TableTop Tavern. Such a fun group but all stand strong together when one of their own needs support. Several scenes had me tearing up and that's just a sign of how good the writing is, grabbing me from the first page and keeping me entertained on the rollercoaster throughout.
A highly entertaining and emotional story that is a great addition to a much loved series. I can't believe that the next book is the final one!
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

I’ve not read the previous books and don’t feel I missed much, I am intrigued by some of the other characters though so will be happily checking them out soon!
Arjun is a super busy guy with too many responsibilities and not enough hours in the day, I really felt for him and was desperate for him to ask for help so was super happy when he finally got it! The story with his grandmother was just heart breaking and makes me fear the future a little to be honest.
Eli is a rather broken man, he has dreams and doesn’t want to compromise on them but he puts himself under so much stress that I just wanted him to be more realistic.
The pair are great together and balance each other nicely so it’s great when they finally get together.
The story acknowledges various issues in life so isn’t all light and fluffy but that’s a good thing, it has grit, drama, passion and friendships, it has family issues, health issues and a cute dog! It’s a good read.

I love Arjun and have for a bit now through this series. His snarky, flirty exterior hides a soft yet weary heart. He is running himself into the ground trying to work enough jobs to make the money he needs to pay for his grandmother’s care. He wouldn’t have it any other way. Except he is tired. Eli is still trying to adjust to civilian life and hasn’t 100% figured out his next path. These two get off on the wrong foot and neither one is willing to see past the surface misunderstanding to get to know each other better. That has an explosion written all over it! I love Sita, Arjun’s grandmother. She is hilarious and I wish that I had a grandparent like that! Both of these men have walls that tower above their hearts but it just takes a few encounters to bust those walls down. I honestly think Arjun is one of my favorite characters to date in this series.

Steamy, M/M romance, hurt-comfort, found family at a gaming cafe
I’ve read a few in this series so far and they are all quite good if you like M/M romance with angst and a found family, which I do. In this book the author has gone back to pick up on the less-mentioned chef at Tabletop Tavern where, playing games like D&D is typical so yeah, kind of a nerd place to go but very popular. This chef is 25yo Arjun Gupta who can land some of the snarkiest one-liners ever. Problem right now is that he is so financially overboard that he’s barely handling two jobs and trying to visit his Nani who raised him after his mother/her daughter was killed in a car accident.
Enter newly-out of the military, Eli Reynolds, ten years older and looking to settle down. He’s been hurt before by a guy much like Arjun so he wants to steer clear of that mess. What he finds out is that Arjun projects a certain personality but down deep he is very different. After many opportunities and a little heart-to-heart from a former military friend, Eli takes a chance on his irrefutable attraction to the brash and snarky Arjun. So heart-warming in parts especially when Arjun is with his Nani or when Eli shows his prowess calming dogs. Such a good book. I volunteered to review it through Gay Romance Reviews and highly recommend this series and in particular this book.

How do you trust when your trust has been broken time and time again since childhood? How do you find that one person that is safe to build a future with when the past has shown that people aren’t there for you?
Arjun & Eli both think what each other is wanting is totally opposite, but is it really? Can it be as simple as letting someone in?
Sexy, snarky, fun story of two guys trying to survive life and be happy.

Reading of these two was delightful. Arjun with his sense of himself, his struggles and his friendships was a lot of fun. Eli is another great character that you fell for immediately. Seeing these two navigate to a full on relationship was another treat. The solidarity of friendships in this book was another strength. A very enjoyable story with a really sweet HeA. A Joyfully Jay review.

4.5 stars

Dexterity Check is the fifth book in the Dungeons and Dating series and is my favorite thus far. While the crew from the Tabletop Tavern and MCs from the other books are important characters that feature heavily in the story, it stands alone very well. The story starts with an enemy(ish) to lovers setup as Arjun reminds Eli of his superficial, cheating ex and Arjun loves to aggravate the seemingly uptight Eli because he’s not a fan of being judged by a stranger for simply enjoying one-and-dones. McIntyre does a good job threading the needle between Eli being a censorious prick and Arjun being an annoyance, as it’s easy to understand the hang-ups and hurts underneath each man’s actions. There’s a lot of banter and sass, but also a lot of heart and difficult emotional journeys.

These two stole my heart and kept me reading until I hit the end.

Arjun, the chef, and dancer with his heart of gold and flirty humor-filled deflection, but over time Eli, the retired vet, wanted nothing more than to find his place in the world, sees Arjun's true nature, a vulnerable, hardworking loyal man who just needs to let his guard down - Eli is much the same, but while feeling like he doesn’t quite belong…

Can these two make it work?
Yes, yes, they can!

All of the secondary characters had a firm place in the story and each one played a role in making the world the author has created so beautiful and real. Nani is simply the best and I want to hug her, and then sit down and have tea while she ogles every hot man in sight.
The way Katherine brought these two together was simply brilliant. It was real, raw, and believable. I fell into their world and didn’t want to leave.
Both men started the story with a lot of baggage but together and with their found family in their corner, the world is a brighter place.

Aweee! Arjun and Eli's book was so adorable and emotional. Per usual of this series, the characters had a lot of miscommunication and early traumas to delve through. The stories are always really fun to read with the mix of games and relationships and backgrounds.

Beautifully written and emotional romance.

An ultimately heartwarming and beautifully constructed read. All of the characters are well developed, and I particularly loved the central characters Arjun and Eli. Both are broken in their own way, and throughout the book, even when they appear to simply endure one another, they unknowingly offer support in difficult times. Katherine has produced a sensitively written story about the barriers and challenges of mental ill health, against the background of falling in love. The book made me want to provide endless cuddles and hugs for Eli and Arjun, as well as a wish for the guys to recover and thrive. The book isn't all gloom and doom, it provides light and humour, Arjuna's quick wit, and his randy Nani, really made me smile. On the whole, it's a real emotional rollercoaster, talk about all the feels! It's a very special hurt/comfort story of found family, friendship and fresh starts. My favourite of the series so far.

Arjun's grandmother made this book 5*. Otherwise, it would have been 4. Still a good book, filled with lots of angst and hurt/ comfort vibes. Two broken men, one of which doesn't like the other at first, discover they are each keeping secrets, and once those secrets come out, they realize they are a wonderful match. Some sad times, but they support each other through them, and come out stronger on the other side. I'd also like to add that Shep is a star as well.

I’ve read another book from this series so it was nice to catch up with all the characters. I have absolutely no idea about D&D but this has not detracted from my enjoyment. I absolutely loved this story. Arjun was an amazing character as was his Nani. He and Eli were both so broken but together they made a wonderful whole. I was pulled in from the very beginning and clung on until the end when they received their well-deserved HEA. Now looking forward to the last in the series.

"Dexterity check" is a part of a series but each book focuses on a different couple and can be read as a standalone. The characters from the previous books make cameos but I promise you won't feel confused if you haven't read them. I have read two other books in the series and absolutely adored them and I plan to read the rest because this series is amazing and I'm having the best time with this group of characters. The found family theme throughout the series is the best.
Arjun and Eli were so well developed, they felt like real people and I just connected with both of them instantly. I cared deeply for them and I wanted to hug them when they were feeling bad and I was happy when they were happy. I loved reading their journey to their happily ever after.
Arjun was so sassy and I loved his sunshine attitude and Eli was such a sweet and caring person.
Their romance had a grumpy/sunshine, enemies to lovers vibe and their chemistry when they finally got together was explosive.
I also really appreciated the character development for both main characters. It was a romance but it was also a journey of self discovery. And Arjun's grandmother was the best. I loved her character.
If you are in the mood for a well written contemporary romance with amazing characters I highly recommend Dexterity check.

Edited to add that I reread the book and this time I listened the audiobook. The narrator was absolutely fantastic, I really really loved how he brought to life Arjun and Eli, the chararacter voices were perferct. Brilliant narration.

I have read all these books in this series and this one is the best one so far. Eli and Arjun are great together. Eli has been having some trouble with his personal life and he's given a chance to make it right. Arjun is the just man to help him. Their relationship is so sweet and romantic but not without some hiccups. The book is witty, funny, and with low angst, and it was great seeing the previous characters.
I'm looking forward to the next book in this series.

Story = 5 stars
Narration = 5 stars

This can be read as a standalone. This was my favorite in the series. I loved everything about it. I was drawn in by their very first snarky banter and fully invested til the very end. I loved both of the MCs. Snarky, sassy twinks and grumpy Daddy types to me are the perfect pairing. These 2 MCs were perfect for each other and they had amazing chemistry even though the story is a slow burn, there are sparks flying between these 2 the entire book. The story is fun and sweet. There's a few sad mentions but they are balanced out well. The 2nd part has some steam and I felt like it was the perfect amount for this particular story. There is some angst near the end but again I thought it was really balanced out well. I thoroughly enjoyed this story. There's also a dog and who doesn't love a dog Daddy.

Eli is home after 15 years in the military. He is staying at his parents til he figures out what to do next which he will have to decide on quick because his parents put their house up for sale and are moving states. He doesn't have anything tying him to either city so he debates going with them or staying. He volunteers at a nursing home visiting patients. Mostly veterans but also one flirty granny. He doesn't like casual dating and prefers relationships but he was recently dumped and has abandonment issues. He thinks arjun is hot but his personality reminds him of his ex. He assumes if he has his same good qualities, he must have his bad qualities too. Still he can't help coming to Arjuns rescue when he needs help even if it's makes him grumpy.

Eli lost his mom in car accident at a young age and his father dumped him off on his grandma who not only raised him but put him through culinary school. Working as the chef at TT is his dream job but his grandma needed to move to a nursing home for health reasons and he had to start stripping to pay for it. He is over worked and over tired and drowning in debt. He too has abandonment issues and refuses to date. Despite all his issues he comes off as a fun ray of sunshine.

The narrator did a fantastic job. He voice was pleasant to listen to and he kept a good reading pace. He expressed all the emotions wonderfully bringing the story to life. He gave all the characters their own distinct voice that suited them perfectly and made the story easy to follow. I was impressed with how he could make his voice sound really young and playful but also deep and mature. It was a pleasure to listen to this story.

The Dungeons and Dating crew are my emotional support found family and I have loved every book they've had. But this one? This one hit different. Eli's arc - finding himself at thirty-five after his life trajectory completely changed - was something I related to so much and it made my enjoyment of the book even higher (which was hard to do tbh) but also made it a bit harder to read because OUCH SO REAL.

Eli and Arjun's story technically began in book #4, but you don't have to read it to understand them. You get an overview - they met, Arjun hit on Eli, Eli turned him down. But now its their time to shine and to really come together. This book began with a series of judgements. Eli thought Arjun was just a fuckboy who gave little care for anyone or anything else. Arjun thought Eli was a stick in the mud with a holier than thou attitude - albeit, a hot stick in the mud he'd very much like to climb like a tree.

The first part of the book was them learning that the other was so much more than what appeared on the surface, which let Eli learn to trust that Arjun wasn't like his absolutely shittastic ex-boyfriend. And Arjun learned that Eli had a damn good sense of humor and did something that very few people in his life ever did - either due to him not allowing it or due to their own failings: show up.

The love story between them was beautiful. The way they kept falling together and then falling for one another melted me. The relationship between Arjun and Nani literally brought me to tears - like actually crying in a hotel room while I was on work travel. The physical chemistry between the leads was palpable and there was the most intense near first kiss ever in this book. Like Kat had me sweating from that near first kiss, leaning in further to my kindle, shouting KISS KISS KISS in my head and then wanting to throw the book at a wall when they were interrupted.

Like that near kiss is down for top 10 near kisses in history.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants a book about people finding themselves, learning to trust, etc. I would also recommend this book (and the whole series) for anyone who is a fan of the found family trope. Because the Dungeons and Dating crew - they epitomize that trope and I will love them forever.
