The Hollows #10.5

Trouble on Reserve

Rate this book
A routine protection gig for business tycoon Trent Kalamack quickly goes wrong when runner Rachel Morgan discovers she is the assassin's target.

Hollows short with Trent and Rachel working together. The timing of the story sort of puts it between A Perfect Blood and Ever After, but the feeling of it is seriously slanted toward Ever After. If you get a chance to read it, I’d [author] be curious to know what you think about the “voice.” One of the things I tried to do–besides get a chance to see Rachel and Trent work together–was to give it a more mainstream feel since there’s the chance readers who would normally never pick up the Hollows might be reading it.

Be forewarned, there are spoilers EVER AFTER in this short story. EA is not due to hit the shelves until January, so unless you've read the ARC you will be spoiled!

That said, I absolutely adored this short story. The Hollows is the gift that keeps on giving! I love Trent and Rachel!

" The new, free, reader app for the iphone, ipad, and ipod touch has a new, never published Hollows short with Trent and Rachel working together. It’s called Trouble on Reserve. The timing of the story sort of puts it between A Perfect Blood and Ever After, but the feeling of it is seriously slanted toward Ever After. " - Kim Harrison

*****Possible Spoiler Alert*****

I love it when Rachel and Trent work alone together. They are always more relaxed around each other when there is no one to see it. Their feelings toward each other are also more apparent. In this short story Rachel has serious avoidance issues with her feelings, as she continues to deal with the spine shivering sexual tension between herself and Trent. Trent shows that he really does care what Rachel thinks of him.

When Rachel and Trent are attacked, Trent's primal side comes out trying to protect Rachel. Rachel finally realizes that Trent is willing to kill someone to protect her, even though that's not the man he wants to be.

Re-read July 2015

Hmmm... Okay, this time I read this story after Ever After, and I'm still not sure where it falls in the time line and how it connects to the overall story. I thought there was a mention of the incident happening here in A Perfect Blood? Still. One can never have enough of Rachel and Trent in action, and it was fun to see them interact when not surrounded by a gazillion people of different species, deflecting evil demons or saving the world. ♥

His fingers were firm in mine, and I stifled a thought of him running them over my body. That grace between my sheets... that strength mine to enjoy... *sigh* There comes the fantasy.

*Yikes, maybe I was a bit over-excited here LOL*

ARGHHH! I need Ever After like YESTERDAY!!!

Ok, so these two get in trouble mostly because they're too stubborn for their own good, as usual, so I will admit that I didn't pay that much attention to the action and all that. But... *fans self* Oh. My. God. Everything else that wasn't actually said in this scene... *dreamy sigh* Can I say I love, love, LOVE Trent? Rachel, you are in so much trouble this time! This is going to be fun!:D

I can't wait for Ever After! And after those bonus chapters at the end of APB... And Rachel's thoughts on the last page of this story... *sigh* Bring on the swoon-fest!:))

P.S. Don't worry about the voice, Ms. Harrison, it's awesome - just like everything else you write!

P.P.S. Did anyone see Ever After on Netgalley or Edelweiss? I'm having a fangirl panic attack here. :))

One word - AWESOME!! Like, OMG awesome!!!

Many thanks to my GR friend, VampireNovelFan (Erika) for sharing this fun little short story with me. If it wasn't for her, I might have missed out on this one for a long time before realizing that it was there.

As a big fan of Rachel & Trent, I was extremely ecstatic and pleased as there was a lot of alone-time between these two. As for spoilers for Ever After, well, let's just say that I couldn't see much, except for

Rachel had some inner monologues during which she admitted that she had romantic feelings for Trent, which was absolutely AWESOME!! LOL. Their interactions have changed on very subtle levels that made things very obvious in terms of where things were headed. Despite the short length of this story, Ms. Harrison managed to pack a bit of adventure, actions, and romance into a neat little package.

The only drawback to having read this, was that it was too short and was over too quickly. Now I have to wait two long painful months for Ever After to be released in Jan. 2013!!!

For now, this short story is only available on Sony eReader. If you don’t have a Sony eReader then you can still get it by downloading the Sony eReader app here. You don’t need an account, when you download the app, the ebook is preloaded.

TROUBLE ON RESERVE claims to take place between A PERFECT BLOOD and EVER AFTER (which is why it’s labeled as 10.5) however please be warned that it really seems to take place either during or even AFTER EVER AFTER. Reference is made to things that happen in that book and unless you want to be spoiled (not much, but it’s there) then I would recommend reading this after you read the next upcoming book in January. I will keep my review spoiler free.

This story basically gives us a small glimpse into the interactions between Trent and Rachel. That’s all there is to this story. It’s their connection, them coming together, working together, and facing danger together. And maybe starting to show how they truly feel about one another, how much they care.

As this series is slowly coming to a close, we are seeing more and more a vulnerable side of Trent. And I just love that! He wants to be good but sometimes he’s forced to be bad. Like when he takes Rachel on a job without telling her what he was really doing there and all hell breaks loose, of course.

Rachel has grown a lot and matured, but it was also nice to see her so sure of herself and her ability to protect Trent. Not to mention the action. These two can always get into trouble.

I really don’t know how this would work as a standalone if you didn’t know anything about The Hollows world, but in general, this series is not one that I would ever recommend reading out of order. These books are jammed packed with information and so many things happen and change from one book to the next that I feel it would certainly but a dent in your full enjoyment.

I adore anything Kim Harrison, but this short story seemed a bit redundant. Trent has used Rache's services through deception once or twice already. And Rachel always pisses off the vamp masters somehow. Not to mention this issue of her finding their souls after death has been broached in several novels. We already know that Rachel has the hots for Trent, and that Trent wants to be a good guy. So why the short story outlining all of this again?

Liked this short story with Trent and Rachel. Sparks just fly between them and she is clueless. But the complaint I have is that this story is before the Ever After book yet is in the back of that novel. HUH shouldn't you let the readers know that this predates the novel. For us nerds/OCD readers this is unacceptable

This is a very short story in The Hollows urban fantasy series that Harrison claims takes place between A Perfect Blood and the upcoming publication, Ever After . However, a number of people, including Harrison, seem to think it actually takes place during/after Ever After which isn't due for release until January 2013. Don'cha just love certainty...!

NOTE: This is a free e-short only available as per my post on the sixth.

My copy was provided by Erika, a.k.a., VampireNovelFan. If you sign up to follow her blog...you too might be able to download a copy!

My Take
A really, really short story with only twenty pages! It's just enough to raise questions and give Rachel plenty of time to whine to herself about how she'll never work for Trent again. The same old story we hear in every story. Only this time, she's added agonizing over the physical attraction she feels for Trent.

There's a bit about Ellasbeth and her motives as well as Cormel's.

I wouldn't fuss too much over getting a copy. It's only about 14 or so pages of actual story; some of that 20 is taken up with title page, credit page, etc. Nor do I think reading it ahead of Ever After will really make a difference. The slight bit of action in this is offset by dialog that has occurred to some extent in the earlier stories.

The Story
Life happens and Rachel's irritation stems from Trent's simply treating her like one of his horses.

Then there's the electrical charge at the gate that Rachel realizes too late is a tag, making them an even easier target.

Only, who is the true target of the assassin's bullet?

The Characters
Trent Kalamack is a billionaire elf, a drug lord, and a manipulator of illegal genetic medicine.

Rachel Morgan is a private runner providing investigative skills and, in this story, security for Trent.

The Cover
The cover is pretty with its bright blue sky and twin flashes of lightning revealing the harbor and an overhead view of Cincinnati at night.

The title may well be a precursor of what is to come in Ever After as things heat up between Rachel and Trent or perhaps it will be Cormel losing patience with Trouble on Reserve.

This entry in the Rachel Morgan/Hollows series is a 20-page short story. The two scenes in this story take place an unspecified time after the conclusion of Ever After, the eleventh book in the series.

The author’s blurb lists this item as #10.5 in the series, before Ever After, but I do not agree. The second scene clearly references the kisses shared by Rachel and Trent, which occurred in the very last pages of Ever After. Hence, I would call this #11.5, and I feel it would be better understood if read at that point.

Because the story is so short, almost any discussion of the plot thread would be a spoiler. Suffice it to say that Trent is still at odds with Rachel on how to communicate with her honestly – about her job with him and about their personal situation. However, Rachel has no qualms about calling him on it.

Most of all, Kim Harrison, in 20 short pages, shows us a new aspect of Trent’s business and legal situation. The plotline, while complete in the two scenes, is tense and unhappy. It is basically a teaser setting us up for the next full book in the series. And the title, to me, does not correlate with the plot thread.

Happy, happy dance!!!...... Thank you to Kim Harrison and Sony!!!!

Spoiler Alert! This short seems to happen AFTER "Ever After", so if you haven't read the ARC of "Ever After", you may want to wait until January 22nd to read this after "Ever After" is released.

As if waiting on the next Hollows book wasn't ALREADY excruciating enough! After reading "Trouble on Reserve", I'm even MORE anxious, if that's possible.

What I enjoyed about this short, is obviously any Rachel/ Trent action is A-ok in my book:) I look forward to reading ANY opportunity that they have to work together or spend time together. (wink) I definately enjoyed the writing style that was used and the direction that the Hollows series is taking. I can't wait to see how these characters continue to grow and evolve.

I can't believe I forgot to rate this back when I first read it. The only thing that could be better than a Trent/Jenks story is a Trent/Rachel story so the fact that fans of this series got both this past year (*plus* the APB chapter from Trent's POV)is just Hollows heaven in my opinion. Then again, I can never get enough of Trent. Set after the events of Ever After, this story gives us yet another glimpse into the addicting dynamic that exists between Rachel and Trent. I have truly had a blast watching these two slowly circle each other since book one. Something's gotta give soon with these two. This is a must have for any Hollows fan but especially for Rachel/Trent fans.

This was included at the end of the copy of Ever After I purchased. It seemed to fit there in the timeline perfectly.

It was good. I was happy to see Rachel working with Trent. I am a little confused as it took place a day before Quen, the girls and Ellasbeth are supposed to return. The story says they have been gone 3 months. I thought it was one month at each place, when I read Ever After.

Anyway, it is a good story. Jenks is in great form. My tension with Rachel and Trent is frustrating me.

I loved this little taste of Rachael and Trent. It makes me wonder if it will be part of the story line in Ever After or it will just be left alone for this one-shot. I especially liked the assumption that the guys were after Trent because...well, they usually are. I still don't know if I'm rooting for Trent or Al.

A great little short playing Trent and Rachel in a familiar but fun little adventure. Harrison asked her readers how we felt about the "voice" since she tried to write the short more "mainstream" but I really didn't notice much of a difference. Maybe because when I read a Hollows novel there's already a well worn groove in my brain for how everything flows.

20 pages but the short scene with Rachel and Trent was sizzling with tension and reminded me why I enjoy very much when the two of them interact, even though they have yet to admit they really would make a great couple!

Wow! A perfect preview for the next book wrapped up in a short but sweet story. Kim Harrison could write 10 more of these now that Trent's character has evolved and I would read them all!

This was a very short story about our favorite 'cookie maker' and Rachel. It was a brief look into their growing relationship and I really liked it overall.

Not adding a date finished bc this is so short I don't want to add it to my reading challenge/it's an extra at the end of the ebook for book #11 anyway.

Okay, so it's weird that this is tagged as Hollows #10.5 when really it makes most sense to read it after or near the end of #11, not after #10. I get the thing about publishing order, but some things are disclosed/hinted at in this little story that you don't know until you read through #11.

I am so Annoyed with all this Trent/Rachel. Really. Honestly, this tiny story just gave more proof for why Trent sucks, so I really don't get why this story is so highly rated and why so many readers like Trent. He's kind of terrible. Like the story was written alright, but I'm not down for the content of it or what it means for what is (probably) going to come next in the last two books. :/

A quick little short story of Rachel and Trent on a job that should actually come AFTER Ever After—not before—as evidenced by the girls being with Ellasbeth, plus the mention of a half-drunk confession. So while the copyright date on this short story appears to be a year earlier than Ever After (2012 vs 2013), Ms. Harrison obviously rewrote parts so that it clearly fit AFTER, and thus more precisely as a short story at the end of that novel.

That said, this particular story seemed to come to an abrupt end with no resolution... who knows, maybe it'll all be brought to light in The Undead Pool—the next full-length novel in the series.
