They made me a weapon. But she makes me wish I were something more.
I’ve survived the pits, the camps, and the streets—places where only monsters walk away alive. I never needed peace. Never craved anything but the fight. Until her.
Maya Johnson is the new town doctor—kind, human, and too damn soft for a place like Shadow Ridge. Hammer says she needs protection. So I’ll guard her body, keep her safe from whatever danger brought her here. But I won’t let her past my walls.
She sees my scars and doesn’t flinch. Touches me like I’m not made of fury and violence. And every time she looks at me like I’m worth saving, I start to believe her.
But someone wants her gone. And to get to her, they’ll dig up the darkest part of my past. They think I’m just a weapon. They’re about to find out what happens when that weapon falls in love.

Brotan is the second book of the Ironborn MC series by Reagan Phillips. I feel like this series throws together two very specific tropes (monster/paranormal romance and motorcycle club/organised crime), but does it in a such a passionate and action-packed way. I honestly didn't know what to expect when I read the first book, but here I am loving the second book of the series.
This is a dark type of motorcycle club romance, there is crime and their is murder, but all in all, the orcs are a bunch of decent blokes.
Crow (legit name is Brotan) is an orc who has had a rough life. He grew up in camps where orcs were forced to stay when they crossed over and assimilated into the human world. He learnt from a young age that he had to fight for basically everything. And so it only seemed natural that he ended up in the Ironborn MC.
Crow and emergency doctor Maya met in New York City after Crow got involved in a particularly bad fight, and years later they cross paths in Shadow Valley, a small town that was run by a corrupt mayor and his goons and is now coming back to life thanks to the protection and help of the Ironborn MC. The back story of the town is told in detail in book one, but we get enough context here for those that haven't read it.
Crow and Maya don't get along because, more than anything, Crow is combative. To use an ogre pun on an orc, Crow has many layers like an onion. There is a lot of danger around him, more than just being in Ironborn, and we spend a lot of the book peeling back those layers. In saying that, Maya also has layers, just that she doesn't have as much danger in her past.
I loved getting to know Maya and Crow, they are wonderful together, and just what each other needs in life. I'm also enjoying seeing the town small town come back together thanks to the support of the orcs in Ironborn MC, it's really nice seeing something strong being built as these gruff and rough orcs find love.

Crow/Brotan (H) is an orc who’s spent his life surviving: first the camps, then the fight pits, and now as muscle for the Ironborn MC. He trusts no one and lives like a weapon waiting to be used. Maya (h) is a New York surgeon whose career collapsed after one irreversible mistake. She swore she’d never lose another life... including her own sense of purpose.
When Maya takes a job in the forgotten town of Shadow Ridge, the last person she expects to see is the orc she once saved. The quiet, broken tension between them simmers into something raw and undeniable, something that refuses to be ignored.
Crow’s past resurfaces with a threat that puts Maya directly in the crosshairs. Forced back into the underground, he’s given a choice: throw the fight and keep her safe, or lose her forever. This time, it’s not just about survival. It’s about protecting the one person who sees him as more than a monster.
Crow begins as a hardened enforcer shaped by trauma, while Maya is a doctor carrying guilt and disillusionment. As they break through each other's defenses, Crow learns to accept care, and Maya learns to reclaim control over her future. What begins in tension becomes a partnership rooted in trust, growth, and the shared decision to stop running.
A steamy, high-stakes, orc-human, grumpy sunshine, small town, MC romance about love, connection, trauma, redemption, identity, healing, loyalty, and the brutal cost of survival. It’s about choosing more when everything says to settle for less.
The healer and the fighter...two sides of the same coin
Brotan is the second book in the Ironborn MC series. After reading Vargan, the first book in this series, and enjoying it I wanted to dive into the story of Maya and Brotan. Maya is a doctor who moved to Shadow Ridge from NYC to start over. She wanted to make a quieter life for herself and practice medicine. Vargan was taught how to fight and literally be a weapon at a young age. He is big and lethal Orc fighter who has a lot of pent up rage inside him. Vargan is assigned to be a bodyguard to Maya, to keep her safe as she works. Both of them do not want the other but there is something that they can't fight for long...a connection where they see the heart and core of each other. But there are dangerous forces around them that could threaten what they try to forge together. They will have to work together to fight for the forever they want together. I was not disappointed at all by this book. It is well written, the story is compelling and well crafted, and the characters are intense, wounded, have love to give and a tenderness with each other, along with the sizzling passion that ignites the pages.
I totally liked this MFC. She has a no nonsense directness that is inspiring. The MMC has lived a life of trauma and exploitation. There are a couple quotes about trust that I really appreciated.
“Trust. Something so simple it seems impossible. So easily destroyed, it's rarely worth the risk.”
And,
“Trust is the luxury of those who never had to fight for survival.”
The flight or flight mode that is required for survival keeps people in a state of hypervigilance. It sounds like human men did what they do best when the orcs showed up - they crushed them.
“In the camps, they taught us trust was weakness—the vulnerability that gets you killed. The military reinforced it through betrayal and exploitation. The fighting circuits cemented it in blood money.”
All the orcs live in a sort of hypervigilance created by their treatment by humans. Living this way makes trust difficult because you can never know if you can trust someone for sure.
Gus is a good side character. Also, I liked the scene with the MMC and the dog. Dogs teach us to give and receive love so easily - if we'll just let them.
Book 2 of the Ironborn MC series. Beaten and left broken in an emergency rooms parking lot, Crow is in pain, but satisfied with his winnings. Orcs will get the cops called on them at the ER, especially ones who look as rough as he does. People around the ER start to mobilize trying to keep him from leaving -certain he has been involved in something that hurt humans. The crowd gets bigger and more threatening, with them calling him names and telling people to call the police. No one helps him, not even the staff who have congregated at the door to stare. Till he hears a doctor who isn’t afraid and comes to check his many injuries. He refuses treatment, and she refuses to listen, but can’t bring him inside. A town filled with bigotry, a man filled with anger and wariness, a doctor who upholds her oath. A great story with wonderful characters and a great plot. I can’t wait to read the next one.

Brotan(Crow) and Maya: This is Book 2 of the IronBorn MC series and though I loved Vargan, I think I loved this one more. Above and beyond loving the deep heart and warmth under the trauma of the MC(Orc), the women are all formidable. In Vargan, Savvy had no quit in her and in this one "BROTAN" Maya had the determination, perseverance and medical ethics we hope all doctors have, who value their oath above what they get paid to provide care.
I love that Crow and Maya were able to see each other (mind, body, and soul) over the walls each had built around themselves and their hearts and able to let each other in. Sometimes you have to walk through hell to get to your destination; it helps if you have someone by your side who will help you keep going and not get mired in the difficulties of life and the past. It's truly a blessing that they were able to find each other.

Brotan is such a page-turner! I enjoyed Crow and Maya's story immensely. It is romantic, spicy, emotional and suspenseful. I loved the development of their relationship. Crow is haunted by the past, of being treated like a lesser being by humans, but this changes after meeting Maya, the human doctor. Maya too is haunted by her past. She blames herself for the death of a patient and she also deals with her parents' disappointments due to the choices she makes. The story also has a great world-building. I loved the idea of tough outcast orc biker club members moving to a backward town in Georgia to help the locals in rebuilding it and dealing with the town's criminals. The story gripped me from the start. I was very excited to read it and found it to be very engaging, romantic, angsty, and entertaining! Oh, and I can't wait to read Helen and Hammer's story too!.

This was a fab follow-up to book one and it was just as gripping. In this gritty world where orcs are present, it's not as simple to be accepted as you'd hope. Crow/Brotan has been tasked to protect the new doctor and he's shocked when he sees it's the doc that treated him in the city, despite hospital staffers telling her that their policy was to not treat orcs. Ha! Maya took oaths and takes them incredibly serious. She has trauma from her past, though, and the fresh start she needs puts her back in Crow's sphere. Both characters were stubborn, determined, fighters (him physically) and really suited each other perfectly. Expect to get caught up in the action, danger, blackmail, chemistry and steam as they follow the rough journey to their HEA. I'm definitely looking forward to the next book :D
Good story. 2 broken hearts that need a lot of healing. Both trying to escape some aspect of their past. Action, romance, some angst, some steam. It’s a little heavy emotionally speaking. Given the number of enemies they are facing, and the amount of pain they both carry, that’s to be expected. The character development for both was spot on, and I got a good sense of the two MCs, and really found myself wanting good things for them. They fit perfectly. I’m excited for more in the series. Readers who love orcs or MC stories will enjoy this.

Brotan/Crow has been fighting, in the camps, the underground fights and on the streets. One night he ends up the hospital and the will not let him in but the doctor comes out to tend him.
They meet again when Hammer hires her to run the practice in Shadow Ridge. She sees more in him than most, not a monster but the tender heart beneath. When she is threatened he will send her away to save her from harm.
I am really liking this series, it is well written and the characters likable, looking forward to the next in the series.

OH MY GOD, this was so good. I like the simple, nice cover. You don't need to buy extra character cards, and it's made with care and polished, you know? Mmc is really nice and realistic (YES, I KNOW THIS IS A ORC) but in my opinion he made realistic decisions. They both had their problems, which they worked on together, and well, she did stand up for herself and them together and their relationship. I liked the smooth writing, and it went so well in. This series needs more recognition. Where is BookTok when you need it? :DDDD I enjoyed it a lot. Onto the third book :D, I am excited.
Moving to shadow ridge was a fresh start for Maya, as a Dr. When Brotan is tasked with watching over her they find themselves drawn to one another but his past made him what he is a grumpy orc, trained in violence and it's coming for him and Maya! Well written engaging steamy desires, orc/human grumpy/sunshine romance.

Book 2 of Ironborn MC story for Brotan AKA Crow and Maya. I loved the message behind this story, seeing people for who they are not what they are was just a delight and so needed. I loved the passion and courage Maya showed for her patience and her oath as a doctor. I was mad at Crow for how he pushed Maya away to protect her. But this story will have a wonderful ending.

Brotan is a hardcore male orc. He has had a hard life since the shift. He is always solving things with his fist cause that is what he was taught at the young age of five. That all will change with the compassion of one human woman Maya. Maya on the other hand wants to just treat and save lives. Anyone ones lives even the wild scary orcs. Even if those same orcs are just people too. They have some mines to watch out for on their journey to live in a small town together.
Brotan, aka Crow, has had a hard life. And it has taught him to be to monster that they expect. Maya immediately sees what he is hiding..the need for love and acceptance and a heart that is hurting. At the same time, she is trying to navigate a broken heart from a patient she lost. Both fighting a battle that neither can navigate alone.
Sometimes, to heal the broken pices, they need the broken piece of another to fit.
Part of the Ironborn MC series. I don't normally read MC plots but this has an orc so I'm all in. Maya, a human is being protected by Brotan, an orc. Maya's in trouble and can Brotan save her and have a HEA? Can't wait for the next book.

Just love the big bad orc turned into a caring loving partner! Chemistry of the MCs was off the charts! I really enjoy reading about badass women who don't let a little fear scare them, who aren't afraid to tell the truth. Great story!.

Was so happy to see this pop up for review, after having loved the first in this new series. This is Brotan's story and his mate Maya. She's a doctor with a past and they both have demons to deal with before they too, can enjoy a coming together. :D I'm still hanging out for Helen and Hammer! :D I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is such a fast paced and addictive read. It is a fairly short and quick read about Brotan and Maya, the warrior and the doctor. This is the second story in the paranormal "Ironborn MC" series with monsters, passion and action. This such a good story. I really like how it develops as well as the the action, angst, passion and so much more. This is proving to be a good MC series.
This book is the second in the series. It focuses on different main characters but there is an overarching plot which would make more sense if you've read book 1. There are heavier and potentially triggering themes dealt with here as the main characters both have emotional scars.

The book features the familiar strong orc warrior type, and Brotan himself fits that role well. He’s protective and intense, which works nicely for the romance angle. 💚
The relationship develops at a steady pace, with some nice emotional beats, though it can feel a bit predictable if you’ve read a lot of orc fantasy romance before.
When Crow ends up battered in Mayas ER worlds collide and hearts notice. Both tough as nails, and fighting for survival. Emotions wreak havoc in the action packed weekend read.

Crow has been a weapon his entire life until Maya crashes into his life. Nobody has ever cared about him the way she does and he doesn't know what to do with that. I loved their story!.

This one has lots of drama within the Ironborn orc MC club. Brotan is a tough as nails fighter when he meets a no nonsense doctor Maya who won't take no for an answer.

He was an underground fighting champion. And she's a new York doctor, who is now a doctor for the club. But Crows pass is coming after him and his doctor is in the way. Enjoyed this second book.
