The Sulphur Creek Manor holds lots of secrets. Since it was built back in 1924 by a ruthless entrepreneur, the building has been a witness to countless crimes, controversies, and deaths, landing it with the reputation of one of the most haunted locations in the state of Oklahoma. When paranormal investigators Andrea and Wes embark on the ghost tour led by the manor's obsessive owner and reluctant employee, they soon learn that something much darker than its history lurks behind the manor’s walls.
Paul Avery Tindol is an East Texas horror author. Paul has been writing stories since he could pick up a pencil, and obsessed with all things spooky since his babysitter showed him A Nightmare on Elm Street. His known works include Hunting Snipe: and Other Notes on the East Texas Cattle Mutilations, This House Will Never Be Warm, There's Something Upstairs, and In The Pines, as well as multiple short stories that's have also been featured on podcasts like Creepy, NoSleep, and Someone Just Like You.
3.5 stars. This took a while to get going and find its flow. Almost the entire first quarter of the book was dedicated to introducing new characters in their own chapters, at different time periods. The pace was slow, but fans of haunting-based stories will have a good time with the content. Lots of spooky moments and creepy instances throughout, leading up to the last portion of the book, chock full of horror. With such strong and detailed introductions, I felt like the context and development of the characters, from Lisa to Wes and Caleb, etc, sort of got lost amongst everything else going on. And when things started to get really hairy, I found myself straining a bit to absorb the impact, as I couldn't connect with anyone involved. If the author perhaps chose a singular main character and really dove deep, in this case Lisa, with everyone else just supporting her in this journey to oversee the manor and have her own personal arc of some kind, it would have made this a much more focused showing. I still very much appreciated the effort that Paul Avery Tindol put into this and, again, I think the general horror audience will have a good time here.
If you’re looking for an ACTUALLY scary haunted house story, this one fits the bill.
I had to keep pausing it to give myself a mental health break. I dunno, something about Paul’s writing and the imaginative scenes just freaked me out and gave me nightmares lol! Especially the bridal room closet! Sweet Baby Cheezits, that whole room gave me evil vibes while reading.
So, if you want to follow a couple of paranormal investigators into The Sulphur Creek Manor, be warned that you may just never leave… there are terrifying secrets in the foundation and evil soaked up into the wood of the building itself. Many people have died here and the house is always hungry for more!
With his novella ,"Last Tour at Sulphur Creek," Tindol shows once again that he's a writer to watch when it comes to terrifying tales of creepy and graphic horror, bound to haunt the mind for days to come. "Last Tour" is the work of a hugely talented storyteller, who writes with the singular purpose of scaring you. He knows how to build a scene which will provoke fear, he knows how to keep you reading till the end even when you realize that you should give it a rest for a while - it's just too damn scary!
On the surface, "Last Tour" reads like another paranormal investigation into a haunted house; in this case, a couple of YouTubers visit the Sulphur Creek Manor, and take the offered ghost tour around the place. The cast is very small: four people esssentially, the YouTubers, the owner who's hositng the tour, and an employee. The scenes take place mostly in a couple of rooms. But the story is so good, the dialogue so natural, with such an attention to voice and detail, all of it soon starts to feel very real, as if we're really going through the tour ourselves. Well, no wonder, since a lot of the story is based on the author's visits and tours of haunted places - yet when the horror starts happening, this feeling of "how real it all sounds!" doesn't vanish; on the contrary, it stays, and the horrific supernatural events end up being conveyed very convincingly, their vivid and compelling portrayal enhancing the reading experience, giving off the right kind of creepy vibes certain to unsettle and unnerve the reader while reading. In brief, the horror in this book is brilliantly executed.
The ending was superb. It all clicked the right way, and it completely blew my mind! I recommend this one as a hell of a rollercoaster ride; if you're a horror fan, don't miss it.
Last Tour at Sulphur Creek by Paul Avery Tindol 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Creepy!!!!! 👻👻👻 This story is fantastic and super spooky!! I rarely get scared and I actually felt my stomach knot up while reading this book! This story follows 2 paranormal investigaters, Wes and Andrea, who film a You Tube channel called Witness Demonic. Their latest escapade lands then at Sulphur Creek Manor, where there have been lots of deaths and talk of ghosts, hauntings and paranormal activity. This Hotel doesn’t currently have any other guests staying there, so the owner, Lisa and a co-worker Caleb have agreed to show these “ghost hunters” around. Lisa agrees to take them into the rooms that have experienced the most paranormal action. Wes and Andrea quickly realize that this place really is haunted and are excited to get filming! This story is very well written and the details are so vivid that I felt like I was watching a horror movie. I grabbed the popcorn!!
I was super lucky to get an arc of this amazing book, which took me on a suspenseful and scary journey through this hotel! It’s a fast read as the excitement and suspense doesn’t let up through the entire book!
Paul Avery Tindol is easily a must read author!! *This book comes out April 25th and I highly recommend reading this!!*
This book has everything you need in a scary story. Ghosts and Haunted Housed…. Enough said! This book scared the bejeebies out of me so much that I could Not read it im the dark! Super creepy paranormal investigations that will stick in my head forever. Thank you Paul for those images! I was lucky to receive an ARC of this amazing book! Thank you! Enjoy reading this haunting book! 📚💙 🩸📚
Thank you to the author for providing a review copy.
I am a huge sucker for any kind of paranormal investigation horror and Paul Avery Tindol does not disappoint with Last Tour at Sulphur Creek. There are some truly spine-chilling moments and I found myself thinking, "oh, that is CREEPY" several times. The writing makes it very easy to picture the story in your head, which can be an unsettling experience. 4.5 stars
Fun little haunted house novella. This is my second read by Tindol and was stoked for after reading Hunting Snipe late last year (or this year? Idk, time is an illusion). It’s a shorter one but Tindol nails the imagery in this one. The oil hand’s death, particularly, was 🫣😬🫣😬. Tindol also uses the smell and touch senses to really enhance the creepy factor.
Last Tour at Sulphur Creek features a paranormal investigator duo checking out the Sulphur Creek Manor in Oklahoma. It’s a small cast of characters with only the hotel manager, overnight employee and our two YouTubers. While taking a tour of the hotel they experience quite a bit of supernatural phenomena and things quickly spiral.
The ending felt appropriate and getting to read the acknowledgements and the inspiration was pretty dope. I did find the book a bit too on the nose at times and a bit more subtlety would’ve enhanced the eeriness for me. I understand novellas are limited on character/world building, but I also struggled with the lack of dimensionality with the characters. I didn’t really get a lot of their motivations and would’ve loved some further expansion. All in all this is a solid haunted dwelling tale. I can’t wait to read more from Tindol in the future and would recommend this to those that vibe with haunted mansion stories with well done horrific imagery.
Last Tour at Sulphur Creek by Paul Tindol First, thank you to the author for the ARC copy of this book! Such a well written book that hooked me right from the first page. In “Last Tour at Sulphur Creek”, you have a haunted mansion (Sulphur Creek Manor) which has had horrible deaths inside of it in the past. Now, the Manor has gained a new owner (Lisa) who reopens it for business. The paranormal activity ensues. During a period where there are no guests, Lisa invites some paranormal investigators to the Manor to explore and film for their YouTube channel. The hauntings and activity makes themselves well known. Now, I’m one that avidly reads horror and all sub-genres of horror. I tend to read in the dark on one of my multiple devices…adds to the atmosphere, I think. Not this book! NOPE! The lights got turned back on and stayed on, and I even had to put the book down several times. It is not easy to scare me. Not at all. But THIS book did just that. I was scared sh*tless! Outstanding job on building the characters. The way the Manor was described was so vivid and detailed. The description of the paranormal scenes was outstanding. Paul Tindol, VERY well done! I wish I could read it again for the first time. I loved it!
This story follows two paranormal researchers as they venture to Sulphur Creek Manor, a historically haunted property with a dark and controversial past. Upon meeting the eccentric property owner, the pair embark on a guided tour in hopes of getting footage for their YouTube channel. Activity escalates throughout their investigation, and they soon realize they may be getting much more than they bargained for.
This novella was a great ride. Tindol hits the gas in the prologue and never lets up. In 129 pages, he manages to deliver believable characters, a sense of suspense and unease, solid scares, and incredible imagery before wrapping up the story in a neat little (horrifying) bow.
Thank you so much to Paul Avery Tindol for the ARC! I will be purchasing a physical copy for my collection.
Andrea and Wes are paranormal investigators - well, technically they’re looking for something a little more terrifying than ghosts. They have the perfect opportunity to do just that when they are able to go on a ghost tour of the historic Sulphur Creek Manor. Sometimes the thing you’re looking for finds you and you may not make it out alive. As a huge fan of ghost tours, I thought this was a fun, spooky story. Some very cool twists and creepy moments. This is my fourth book by this author and he always has something interesting to offer the reader. Thank you, Paul, for the review copy.
Holy creepy vibes, book peeps!! This book has alllllll of them!!! 🙌
As someone whose favorite subject is ghosts and haunted places, this book definitely lived up to my expectations!! If you love reading about haunted places, you need to check this one out! 👏
Thank you to Paul Avery Tindol for the opportunity to read the eARC in exchange for my honest review! Will definitely be reading more from you! ❤️
Wes and Ashley are paranormal investigators they are staying at Sulfer Creek Manor. Strange things are occurring. What is in the closet? Will the manor reveal its secrets? Haunting.
I just finished up Paul's latest Novella and I have to say... Don't let this author's smiley, humble demeanor fool you... He's weird. Lol.
Tindol has a unique brand of horror in which he lures you in with some seriously relatable, contemporary characters that converse naturally & behave realistically... Thennnn he hits you with some WTF...
I feel like everything I've read by "PAT" starts off in somewhat of a typical space and then goes down an unexpected path. "Last Tour" is no different. What begins as a classic haunted house story finishes with an explosive & unexpected finish.
Another great chapter in the Tindol catalog! I especially loved the small Easter Egg tie in to Hunting Snipe!
Many people find it fascinating to go to a haunted place. The wonder is there if anyone will experience any paranormal activities or are the experiences all a hoax. Wes and Andrea came to the Sulphur Creek Manor with the intention of taking the ghost tour. They were all in with whatever they might see that was out of the ordinary. Sure, they saw all kinds of scary things but the worst was yet to come. The author does such a great job at building up tension. The image that came to my mind about the portrait in the closet; is enough for me to have dreams about it I am sure. This whole book was a nightmare. The end was so crazy that I knew for sure that someone was going to be changed forever.
Things start to go awry for two paranormal investigators when they sign up for a private ghost tour at a historic (and deeply haunted) manor.
I loved this story. My favorite type of horror is the kind with a crescendo of eerie, unsettling, creepy moments, and this one was full of them. The spook factor really starts to take off after the prologue and the overall pacing was perfect as we learned more about the backstory of the manor, its original inhabitants, and the misfortunes of the guests that have stepped foot on the grounds previously.
Highly recommend grabbing this one when it comes out, this was one of my favorite reads of the year so far!
A story about paranormal investigation, the author is wonderfully descriptive and creates really vivid images that make you feel like you are there. I didn't find the characters particularly likeable, but I did find them interesting and wanted to follow their tales through to the end. All in all, a good read and a fun story.
I wouldn't say I'm always necessarily the biggest fan of haunted house-style stories. Maybe it's because it's such a well-worn path, maybe it's because it feels hard to do anything genuinely new, but I find it's a sub-genre of horror that is less likely to grab and hold my interest, perhaps more so than almost any other. However, I have enjoyed everything I've read of Tindol's so far, so I still went into this book with reasonably high expectations.
Thankfully, Last Tour At Sulphur Creek is one of those stories that did end up commanding my attention straight away, and I ended up enjoying the entire way through. Despite the novella length—the book comes in at around 120 e-book pages—Tindol has managed to fit a lot of story in here. From an immediately captivating and creepy prologue to a slow-burn introduction to the building and its owner, from multiple characters each with understandable motivations and authentic feelings and behaviours to a thrilling climax that manages to tie everything together perfectly—Sulphur Creek is a great example of an author getting a lot out of a relatively small page count. I came out of it with a sense that it feels remarkably well fleshed out and that it was overall a satisfying read.
A quick, effective story, it's easy to recommend Sulphur Creek to anyone looking for a sometimes creepy, often atmospheric tale of the supernatural in a hotel setting. Ghost tours, in-demand rooms with a history of spirits and unexplained activity, and a surprisingly rich backstory for the book's length – this is another success for an author who's fast becoming a must-read for me.
Thank you to the author and the publisher or publishers for all your hard work! I'm leaving this review voluntarily and happily! Take a look!
This author is definitely becoming one of my favorites as every new story I read from him I've always enjoyed them. This is another one. From start to finish, I can't take my eyes off the page. This book has death, mentions of suicide, mentions of things sexual in nature, and other things. This is not extreme horror or splatterpunk. Even so, I really had fun reading it. The spirits in this book that are mentioned are definitely interesting, and I loved how this didn't just drag on. This was a lot like what you would expect from a real haunted house with real evil inside. The pacing was definitely medium to fast the entire way, and the characters aren't ones to just throw away. All in all, it was well rounded, in my opinion.
Sulpher Creek Manor is on its last legs, and not many people seem to be coming to see its haunts. Well, who would from the suicides, deaths, and ghosts that have been said to be happening around the place. Some rooms are worse than others. What's not to say it's all lies? Come stay while you can and see if any of it's true. See for yourself what darkness lies inside. Read to find out what happens to those that dare.
Like I said, I enjoyed reading this. It's not full on tame, but it's not fully brutal either. It's a nice mix, that's for sure. So if you need a break from reading extreme horror, I'd say this is a wonderful book to go with.
This is my voluntary ARC review of Last Tour at Sulphur Creek, by Paul Avery Tindol, due to be released on April 25, 2025. This story centers around the Sulphur Creek Manor, its history, its secrets, and the mysterious happenings to those who venture within. More of this comes to light when a couple of paranormal investigators visit the manor for a ghost tour. I think it’s safe to say that they experience more than they could have ever imagined.
There’s a lot going on in this story. It’s not a fast-paced book, but I wouldn’t call it a slow burn either. It’s somewhere in between, with just the right amount of action, dread, and suspense to hold your interest throughout. Add to it good character development, descriptions of the manor so vivid that I can easily picture it in my mind’s eye, and a decent amount of malevolence, and you’ve got yourself a great story.
There were a couple of aspects of the story that left me wanting clarity, a slight negative for me, but that’s likely just me. Having a more black and white personality, for the most part, I tend to prefer stories that have a clear ending, with nothing left open.
All that said, I rate this a 4 out of 5. I do highly recommend reading it, and I look forward to reading more of this author’s work. Shout out to Grim Poppy Design for the cover art. It’s so creepy, I can’t help but love it.
I received a copy of the audiobook from the author, Paul Avery Tindol, for an honest review.
It has been a long time since I’ve listened to something that gave me chills, literal goosebumps. This is a quick listen (3 hrs and 17 mins), but it packs quite a punch.
Last Tour at Sulphur Creek follows two paranormal investigators exploring a private ghost tour at a notorious, century-old Oklahoma manor with a chilling history. The story quickly builds tension and maintains suspense throughout.
Sulpher Creek checks so many boxes for me. Even though it’s not analog horror, it has that feel to it (which I love). Fantastic haunted house story, modern-day setting, fast-paced, vivid imagery, and genuinely creepy throughout its entirety, along with beautifully developed characters.
The narrator, Jyl Glenn, does a fabulous job delivering the story. I wish there were a bit more differentiation between the characters, just because there were conversations with several characters talking at once.
This is the second piece of Tindol's work I’ve read, and I am excited to see what he produces in the future. Do yourself a favor and pick up Last Tour at Sulphur Creek if you want to creep yourself out.
The Last Tour at Sulphur Creek honestly gave me the creeps. There was something so unsettling about the entire thing and I love it!
The novella takes place at a haunted manor where two paranormal investigators are checking in for the night. Soon after that, they begin a ghost tour to learn the secrets of the terrifying building. I felt like I was on the tour with them, especially when things took a terrifying turn.
The manor is located in Oklahoma, and it feels like it takes place in Oklahoma. I can't really put my finger on how it does that, but it does- probably the massive way the whole story ends. You can feel the old, desperate feeling of when the manor was built lingering throughout the entire story.
I really liked all of the characters, especially Caleb. There was something about all of the characters that felt honest and real.
This is where the story gets a bit personal for me- I am from east Texas, much like Paul. The characters, down to their backstory, all felt more than relatable to me. From the subtle way their accents were written into the story to the haunted locations they had visited, it cured a bit of homesickness for me.
WARNING! THIS BOOK CAUSE RESTLESS NIGHTS AND HORRIFYING DREAMS! That's what shoud be on the cover of this dandy of a horror novella by Paul Avery Tindol (Hunting Snipe). Last Tour at Sulpher Creek is about a ghost tour that goes bad. Very bad. Now, before you say "Oh No! Another ghost tour book?" Don't. Don't say it. This is not another anything. Thi story, based on the author's own experiences visiting haunted locations, masterfully grabs you buy the throat and by the time it lets go, you realize you've read something totally different. And totally wonderful! But, you know what? I'm not gonna warn you. You're so brave? Read the book. Come along with Wes and Andrea. Walk through the house with them. But don't come crawling back to me when you can't sleep. When the moments you DO sleep are filled with horrifying visions and intense terror. I don't wanna hear it. Paul Avery Tindol is coming for your soul with this one. And I tried to warn you.
Holy smokes what a gut punch! If you're a fan of haunted houses, paranormal, possession, and beyond this book is for you.
Right from the prologue you’re tossed into Sulphur Creek Manor and you may as well get comfortable, because you’re home. This story follows Andrea and Wes, friends since college on the search for paranormal for their YouTube channel. The two friends are taking a tour of the historic Sulphur Creek Manor led by owner, Lisa, and employee, Caleb, when things take a turn for the worst. Do they find the evidence they were really looking for or something much worse?
Tindol is amazing at building dread and is constantly adding layers to characters and atmosphere to really bring this story to life. This book really has it all!
I finished this ARC of Last Tour at Sulphur Creek last night and it's right on par with all of the others by this author I have read. Paul Avery Tindol always leaves me wanting more, in the best way possible!
Ever wonder what it would be like to join a haunted mansion investigation? Don't let this short story fool you, it will engross you, and not let go until you finish it. You'll feel like you're right there with Wes and Andrea exploring and experiencing Sulphur Creek Manor and all of its dark secrets.
I could not put this one down, I was left in awe and quite creeped out. I am so excited to continue to watch Tindol grow and keep making a name in horror.
I received a free copy in exchange for my honest review.
Paul did such a fantastic job of setting up the creepy haunted house setting (which he excels at) with its mysterious murderous past, which then takes off into a fast and furious tale with youtubers Wes and Andrea as they (foolishly) attempt to document the last tour at ‘one of the most haunted locations in Oklahoma” that gave me genuine creeps. Paul always knows how to set a scene, and he managed to pack a lot of dread into a small space for this one.
Ok, I think I'm officially a @paulaverytindol fangirl. I had the opportunity to read this early (thanks to the author providing a copy), and this one truly creeped me out. All opinions are my own.
The best part of this book was how real it felt. It was super easy to "see" what I was reading in my head and definitely amped up the creep factor. I had to put it down and walk away for a couple of minutes at one point because I was too nervous to see what was about to happen!
