After a long winter devoid of any rogue-for-hire contracts, Riyria is offered a job to save a man who is being targeted for death. The money is good, but the job is in Rochelle: an old-world city of narrow streets filled with fog and ancient legends—a place that nearly killed the pair of thieves on their first visit.
Nothing, they had vowed, could make them go back. That’s what they thought. Then they learn the man being hunted, is Leopold Hargrave, and the job offer comes from his wife, Genny. Because Royce has too few people he respects and he can't afford to let one die, they grudgingly relent.
Ride once more with Royce and Hadrian back into the shadows and mist on their most infamous mission where they'll face their greatest challenge. Travel with them to Blythin Castle.

I first opened the door to my imagination with typewriter keys while playing hide and seek and finding a black behemoth when I just ten years old. Serious writing started in my twenties, but after more than a decade trying to publish (and getting nowhere), I quit altogether. I returned to writing in 2004, and published my first novel with a small press in 2008. If you had told me that I'd be a New York Times Bestselling author, have 85+ novels translated into 13 languages, and sold more than 2 million copies, I never would have believed you!
Hopefully everyone knows the drill by now, but for those that don't . . . I never review my own book, because of course I think it's amazing. Instead, I use this review space as a way to let people know the writing progress of the book.
• 10/25/25 - I realize it has been a bit since I've updated the status about this book, so today's the day. Well, it's done, actually completed it last month, just a day before a trip out to Salt Lake City to meet with someone I'm sure most of you know. We (Robin and I) had a warm welcome and a great time, and I was glad to get this book wrapped up before that trip. The plan is to hold off the release date until 2027 - why wait? Well we are trying to "fill the time" between Drumindor (my latest release), and The Cycle (which I'm almost half way through - 2.25 books out of 5 at present). We already have Out of the Ashes planned for 2026, so if I put Blythin in 2027, then maybe . . . just maybe . . . the first book of The Cycle could be in 2028. That's the hope at least.
• 09/09/25 - and done!
• 09/01/25 - just 3 chapters left to go!!
• 08/23/25 - 21 / 31 (67%) - starting to see the end approaching. Things are in that "running downhill stage, where I now know all that is going to happen and it's just a matter of getting it on paper. My hope is to have this wrapped up by mid September as I'm anxious to get back to The Cylce #3.
• 08/16/25 - 19 chapters in - at the moment I have 32 chapters plotted out. That means I'm 60% done based on chapters at least
• 06/12/25 - 11 chapters in - and a new plot thread added.
• 04/22/25 - first 2 chapters are "in the can" and since this books is already so heavily outlined (something required when working on The Cycle) it should come together in short order. This really isn't my "writing time" - which generally follows the school schedule starting in the fall), but the hope is I can have it done in time to start Cycle #3 this fall. We'll see how it goes.
• 04/01/25 - with the completion of Book #2 of the Cycle, I thought I would take a break from that series and start writing this book. Much like Esrahaddon (Rise and Fall #3) and Drumindor (Riyria Chronicle #5) this book has some foundational elements for the Cycle, and as such I've already completely outlined it. My guess is it'll be fairly quick book to write as much about it is already known.
