From best-selling author Jordan L. Hawk, the second half of the SPECTR series is now in a box set!
SPECTR: Volume 2 contains: Eater of Lives Destroyer of Worlds Summoner of Storms
What happens when an exorcist falls in love with the demon he’s supposed to destroy?
After becoming possessed by the vampire spirit Gray, telekinetic Caleb Jansen thought he’d hit bottom. But between the hunt for a cannibalistic killer and the increasingly sinister actions on the part of SPECTR, the situation is rapidly going from bad to worse.
Caleb’s boyfriend, SPECTR agent John Starkweather, has suspicions of his own. With the help of his friend Sean and a shadowy organization known only by their symbol of a moth, John intends to save Caleb and Gray at any cost.
When divided loyalties threaten his last chance at exorcism, Caleb discovers love may come at a price higher than he’d ever imagined.
Jordan L. Hawk is a trans author from North Carolina. Childhood tales of mountain ghosts and mysterious creatures gave him a life-long love of things that go bump in the night. When he isn’t writing, he brews his own beer and tries to keep the cats from destroying the house. His best-selling Whyborne & Griffin series (beginning with Widdershins) can be found in print, ebook, and audiobook.
Spectr Vol 2 collects the last three novellas of the Spectr series. I was fascinated by the first collection enough to rate it five stars, but I have to say the second collection is even better, mainly because of the developments between Caleb and Gray, and the Gray and John. Caleb and John already worked great, but finally Caleb accepts the possession in a different light and John's mixed conflicts about Gray are made known.
Eater of Lives is a mere 109 pages (sad), it's the weakest of the last three but still good. The story-line is shaking up the realities with the government-ran operation showing more of its dark colors. Dealing with the ex is humorous. The group has to hunt down a killing and sadistic windigo with an interesting ending to that mystery/showdown. While Hawk dishes out the goods with the relationship, she also keeps the plot interesting, the action scenes exciting, but curses up with a cliffhanger. I'm happy the rest of the series had already been published when I was reading this.
Destroyer of Worlds is the turning point in the series to wrap-up the big stuff. Finally John has to see the truth about the government system he's always thought was legit, and Caleb/Gray have to make their decision on whether to merge permanently or not, since the time has now run out. In an epic ending rescue and revelations of feelings, the ending of this book absolutely rocked. Seriously. Steam has always been sultry and hot before, but the ending of this one? Reading lightning bolts. Seriously, wow. It was already a top favorite series, but this further cemented it.
Summoner of Storms starts with the pre-existing, exciting relationship between the three intact. Now to wrap up corruption and the ending fight the series has been leading up to. The ending is a fierce battle of epic proportions but it all comes out okay in the end.
Loved every book, loved the series. Highly recommended for fans of m/m paranormal. Doesn't get much better.
*Not finished, just taking it off my main page for now, plan is to hopefully read this in December, one story at a time and finish by January 2015 and review the last two as I go* 11-28-14
Review as I go type thing for this one :):
9-24-14 "Eater of Lives"
This is part of SPECTR Volume 2 but I'd thought I'd review it here as well (review for first parts will come when I re-read it later on)
This was another excellent installment of SPECTR. :)
We get alot more angst and tension here, with John's ex-boyfriend Will back in town, and Caleb's 40 day period of possession almost at an end, plus a Wendigo on the loose!
Add to this Graham Forsyth, definitely not all that he seems. My mental alarms and red flags went off not long after he appeared on the scene. He seemed way too interested in Caleb/Gray.
At times, I wished Caleb and John would've just talked to each other about what they were thinking, instead of keeping everything inside. I don't blame them really, the situation isn't exactly black and white.
I felt for Caleb, I'd be terrified too if I was in his position and the deadline was closing in... Makes me wonder though, would Gray completely take over Caleb if an exorcism failed? or would they continue as they are now? I certainly wouldn't mind Gray sticking around.
Gray, I love how he slowly grew into more understanding of humans and their emotions... though this one quote made me laugh:
"She's fucking loading this to YouTube? That's it I give up. The human species is doomed."
"I have often wondered how your kind has survived for as long as you have. This does not give me confidence." ---
Gray and Caleb become, not exactly friends but more at ease with other... a sort of truce I guess. John loves them both but hasn't told them that and both Caleb and Gray think John couldn't love Gray. Why would they think otherwise if John hasn't told them? My heart hurt for poor Gray here.
The suspense, humor, and drama all fit together nicely here... I felt sorry for the Wendigo's host though, poor girl.
That cliffie! :( Glad I have the next one all lined up, I have to know what happens next!
Crappy review since I'm tired but I highly recommend this series *waves* ------
This review is for the whole, 6-novella arc. Because honestly, I devoured them back to back, and I have no clue where any particular instalment ended.
This paranormal/fantasy series is full of plot twists and world-building and all of it very well done. Information is revealed when it's needed, in a way that moves smoothly along with the action and gave me little "ahah" moments of figuring out where something fitted in. The fantasy set-up is unique enough to feel fresh and unpredictable. The action scenes are very visual and vivid.
This is M/M(/M) romance almost as much as paranormal action, and there's a good balance. The main characters - Caleb, John, and the drakul-entity Gray - are fun to watch, as they navigate the difficulties of a relationship where one of the three is a now a co-habitant in the body of another. Gray's personal discoveries, changing his flat reactive persona into a real character, and John's emotions as he dealt with love and betrayal, were highlights in the way the story unfolded. Caleb had his moments, in his new-found determination to become less passive in his own life, just as he had to give up some control.
I enjoyed the ride as they discover Gray's abilities, and Caleb's own, the true aims and allegiances of John's SPECTR superiors and colleagues, and a way to make their odd threesome work. There are revelations both personal and paranormal. I didn't love these guys quite as hard as I have other of this author's characters, but I enjoyed them a lot, cared about their outcome and had a great time watching the action unfold.
Like with the first volune I audiobook listened to the last three novellas in Jordan L. Hawk's SPECTR series. Contemporary PRN crime novellas narrated by a simply fantastic voice belonging to Mr Brad Langer (a la Nick Nowak in Boystown).
In my opinion a quite fresh take on the paranormal M/M genre (no wolves..). Both creepy and spooky stories with well done interesting crime cases. The threesome love here is so sweet and romantic.
Very satisfying character/relationship evolution & action climax.
Series 1, book 4 of 6 introduces John's ex, so he, Caleb, and Gray can all be sure that's over. It ends on a cliffhanger (*after* the cannibal case's conclusion), making me glad I had the set.
Book 5 is an initial climax, as Caleb's deadline collides with a dark SPECTR secret revealed. John must deal with a painful sense of betrayal and loss. And it ends with the first emotionally and sexually intense scene between John and *Gray*. Call that a spoiler if you will, but this is a romance (and not the tragic sort), with three souls involved.
Book 6, which starts at 55%, is the race to discover and prevent Forsyth's dreadful master plan. We learn more about the Vigilant, the secret group who have a different, not so unilateral, attitude toward Non-Human Entities, but still are wary about a drakul in a living host. There are casualties, consequences and complicated questions of trust, and a huge, dramatic showdown.
I do have hesitations about a few redshirt deaths committed by the good guys, supposedly out of necessity, where I wonder whether a lesser injury might not have sufficed, but overall, I still quite like our three-in-two-some of leads.
Historical myths and a bit of vodún (sp?) practices are referenced and related to the plot in quite interesting ways.
I caught a few minor errors this time: two missing commas and a missing "a". Also, it sounds very odd when Vigilant members not only refer to their leader as "la capitaine", but repeatedly *address* her that way. You wouldn't say, "Aye, aye, The General." Oh, and note how I used a comma there; an "aye-aye" (sic) is actually a little Madagascan primate! 😁
Well, anyway, now I'll have to wait impatiently for the next set to come out. I believe it's in progress. I want to see how things have changed for SPECTR and our heroes, and follow them on more hunts.
John, Caleb, and Gray are back. They are still hunting down demons, and John is still trying to find a way to exorcise Gray from Caleb before the two of them becomes fused and Gray takes over Caleb. Caleb is slowly coming to appreciate Gray, and while he still wants to be separated from him, he doesn't want Gray to die. But there are cases to solve, and Spectr to worry about. Because things seem to be turning more and more secretive in Spectr.
There was more separation between Caleb and Gray in personalities in this volume, as they learned to deal with each other and work together. John is so conflicted about harming one of the men that he loves, but tries to keep that separate from their relationship. I liked the build between all three, and how they worked together.
I loved these “episodes” because we get a lot more of Gray and I love the development of the relationships between Caleb, Gray, and John. This is truly a phenomenal paranormal romance mystery series and it only gets better as the characters and world are developed!
So wow, these last three books are a thrill ride. I could barely tell you a tenth of what happens here for fear of giving too much away, but these stories are a non-stop adventure and totally heart pounding. As the men learn more about what is really going on at the RD facility, it becomes increasingly horrifying and incredibly dangerous. It is so hard to know who on the side of good and who is part of the bad guys, and no one knows who to trust. Book 4 is more of the individual mystery style of the first three stories, but by the time that one ends, we go full throttle into the larger story of figuring out what the bad guys are up to and how to stop them. I so wish I could tell you all the things that happen here, because I am not sure my descriptions can even begin to convey the excitement, the horror, and the incredible intensity of what goes on. Seriously gasp inducing moments. But I want you all to get to experience it for yourself, so I am being super vague here. Just trust me, it is amazing.
In addition to the larger suspense plot, things also really move forward on the relationship end. Caleb and John have been pretty solid for a while now, but in these later stories Gray gets more into the mix. It is clear he has strong feelings for John, but both Gray and Caleb assume John could never be interested. And John is growing to love and care for Gray, but worries what Caleb will think. John, in particular, struggles with what he will do if he manages to exorcise Caleb. He knows he can’t destroy Gray, but he also knows he will likely lose his job, and maybe even Caleb as well. Hawk manages to build the tension here really nicely, while at the same time not dragging out the conflict for too long. It culminates in some lovely scenes where we get to see what these three men (or two men and a vampire) have come to mean to one another. I continue to love the interplay between the three of them, and the way Caleb and Gray are both integrated, but also still individuals. I particularly loved when we see John and Gray together as Caleb steps back and lets Gray experience love making with John first hand. Gray is adorably uncertain of how to behave and it is both sweet and amusing to see him try to navigate sex. But let me tell you, this book is incredibly hot and Hawk writes amazingly intense and steamy sex scenes for all these guys.
I have stated in the past that I don’t necessarily like series, because I hate cliff-hangers, and sometimes the authors like to string me along for forever (Dresden Files and Wheel of Time…I could go on *snrk*).
That being said, I have spent the past week or so reading two different series, and “Spectr” was one of them. I carefully prepared myself and bought the entire series, because it was already finished. I snagged it for about the cost of two small romance novels, or a really big one.
Even though I prepared, I found it wasn’t necessary with this series. Hawk does an amazing job of treating each full-length book like its own story – an amazing art. Sure, at the end of each I wanted to know more, but I didn’t need it as I would from a lack of an ending. Each book was complete.
This is an Urban Paranormal MM…M? Romance. Labels make me giggle (too bad my sciencey brain can’t help itself). In this world, paranormally gifted people are called “mals”, and there is an entire police structure (SPECTR) bent around keeping them safe from themselves and the public. It has a fun X-Files feel (something I’m starting to attribute as a signature of Hawk’s work). There are government conspiracies, complicated characters, and paranormally-bent monsters.
Our protagonist is Caleb/Gray. This is a bit of a Jadzia Dax situation, because Gray inhabits bodies, and Caleb is the host. Both of them undergo major personal growth during this process, so it’s hard for me to pick who specifically is the protagonist. They are one.
(You can tell that I loved the series, because I compared it to both X-Files and Star Trek.)
Hawk’s got this law enforcement thing going for her, and she rocks it. She’s also very good at making monsters. Pretty damn gross ones too. *high five*
It’s an MM…M? The romance was riveting, the one thing in this series that kept me hooked all the way through. I stuck with it until I got what I wanted, and Hawk delivered. My one criticism is that I think things were oversimplified just a bit. The situation between the three romantically involved characters was pretty fucking fucked, but it was also sweet, and tender, and fucking hot. So…y’know…right up my alley. *sheepish grin*
So after many distractions (always happens when I'm near the end of a book) I have finally finished all the SPECTR stories that are out at the moment.^^
SPECTR: Volume 2 has the fourth, fifth and sixth stories of season one of SPECTR (because I believe there is going to be a season 2 of the books?), Eater of Lives, Destroyer of Worlds and Summoner of Storms.
Much happens story wise in these there stories. Much of what was a real joy to read. I love the things that are going on in the background and that not anything or everyone is what it/they seems.
I really love the growing friendship between Caleb and the spirit possessing him, Gray. Its one of my favourite things to read in the book and I especially liked how their relationship and understanding for each other developed.
I like the action, its fast paced though doesn't leave you dragging your heels like some plots do. Things really become speedy at the end but I think that was done so show how fast everything was happening in the first place.
So of the details of what was going on and bits about the demons/spirits could be a little sketchy at times and any explanations actually given often let me confused on what I had read. (though admittedly that might be more me not getting it then the actually why its written.
I think the only real thing I struggle with is the actually romance in the series. Don't get me wrong, I love John and Caleb as a couple. But I'm struggling a little with the whole John, Caleb and Gray. I fully admit I don't like threesome type stories. I know this isn't a threesome in the technical since, but I think it pushes my boundaries a little if I'm honest. Pushes, but not pushing over. Although that is purely a taste thing with me. I struggle with it but I don't 'dislike' it. I think its something you just have to read and see for yourself if your okay with.
But even with that I really so like the series. :) I like the characters (and hope to see Tiffany again because she really grew on me!) and I like the plots Jordan comes up with for her stories. I will definitely be trying the next season that comes out anyway. ^^
Winner: 2nd Place: Best M/M Paranormal Romance/Urban Fantasy Series - 2015 PRG Reviewer's Choice Awards
I have finished this almost 800 page series in the amount of time it takes most to read one novel. OMG, I couldn’t put it down. Seriously, I am still digesting, as I actually had to wait to write a review for a few days to let my brain catch up to my eyes.
Jordan has had me as a follower with her Wybornne and Griffin series, and SPECTR is a series that has me reeling. These six novels could be purchased individually, but this six story package is an unfolding serial. Each story begins where the other ends. So what could be bad with a wonderfully long book? For this series it is WONDERFUL! This story is truly paranormal, epic horror. It is set in our time, in a time where Things That Go bump in the Night are real and SPECTR (Strategic Paranormal Entity ConTRol) is in charge of handling and registering the paranormals.
Caleb Jansen holds a dark secret, and because of it he is an unregistered paranormal. Since childhood, his family and he hide his special telekinetic powers wanting to stay under the radar. When his brother Ben dies and then his body walks out of the funeral home, Caleb is called by his brother’s wife, Melanie, to help to retrieve his body. What happens at this point changes what he is and the very foundation of his beliefs about God, Life, and Love.John Starkweather has the life. He is an exorcist extraordinaire. When he is called to help remove an entity that has entered Caleb, life changes for him as well. Gray is a dracul a vampire who drinks the blood of the demon possessed. Gray has entered Caleb and never before lived inside a living host. The first thing he sees is color, and the blue of John’s eyes. Then he feels lust, and then love. What will happen if the entity is not removed? John only has 40 days. Let me warn you, this story is not for the faint of heart, in both horror and sex. BEST. SERIES. EVER.
Review by Gloria Lakritz Sr Reviewer and Review Chair for the Paranormal Romance Guild
I think I might have liked this volume even more than the first one. (Both were five stars for me.) Lots of action, conspiracy, surprises, but also relationship-building and self-realization. I loved how Gray and Caleb worked, fought and loved together, also the way they interacted with John and the development of that relationship. The supporting characters were great. The sexy scenes were even kicked up a notch. Jordan Hawk's writing maintained the quality I expect from her. The volume sets are wonderful - a great price - and there was no way I was going to stop reading at one story. I am sorry it is over now, though.
Enjoyed this a lot despite all the running around with guns and hunting and such. I see the series continues on, but I feel very satisfied where this left off so I think I'll stop while I'm ahead.
