OK, so I capitulate! I am as a comics critic always looking for a good story. Story goes first and images come in a close second. Therefore I've been a bit hesitant at jumping on the bandwagon of fans of Swedish (comics) publisher Sanatorium's biggest star, Mattias Adolfsson. This simply because he doesn't make comics but separate images; intricate, beautiful images, but still, separate and not part of a story.
Still, getting this oversized (A3 when folded) portfolio-cum-folder I'm blown away by these images and the stories they contain. The folder consists of six oversized double-sided prints, i.e. 12 images, which doesn't sound much, but it is. They are filled to the brim with details, so much so that you can look at one image for a long time and still discover new things all the time. It's like in of those oversized, wordless books for young children, but for adults. Each image contains tons of things going on, and your brain just can't help but try to piece things together and build a story around it all.
Having just recently read the beautiful, harrowing book Soft City by Pushwagner, I'm struck by the similarities. Adolfsson and Pushwagner both work in an oversized format and fill their images with seemingly endless detail. If you're a fan of either one, do try the other: you won't be disappointed.
As usual when receiving anything from Sanatorium, the design and printing is top notch. These prints/posters are reproduced on thick, stiff paper with images on both sides, which have then been folded and kept together by a specially designed yellow string. This enables you to pull the folder apart and enjoy each image unfolded and separate from the others. The title and colophon information is included as a yellow sticker on the back of the folder. Simple and ingenious. Oh, and there's an extra cardboard sheet in the middle, to keep the folder from bending. I love attention to detail0 like that.
So, as I said, I give up and now officially join the ranks of fans of Mattias Adolfsson's art. I was already a fan of the publisher Sanatorium...
