Promises Left Behind

Rate this book
Some promises are broken. Others refuse to let go.

Amy believed in forever when she said her vows. But when tragedy struck, the promises she made crumbled under the weight of grief. Now, with her marriage over, Amy is left clinging to the pieces of a life she no longer recognizes.

Enter Ivan — a stranger who feels anything but. With his steady presence and unexpected fire, he makes her wonder if love could still exist for her after everything she’s lost. But trusting again isn’t easy when the past still lingers, whispering of all the ways love can fail.

As desire collides with fear, Amy must decide if she’s brave enough to risk her heart again. Ivan isn’t the man she once promised forever to, but maybe he’s the one who can help her believe in it again.

Because some love stories begin when others end.
And some promises are only broken to make way for new ones.

This book was okay - I wanted to love it, but it fell short for me.

First, as much as I wanted to, I just could not bring myself to like Amy. Amy was married to Terry, who was her soulmate (per both of them). As a wife, Amy just seemed beyond neglectful to Terry. I understand she lost her sister and immersed herself in workout out and owning her new gym, but she did it at Terry’s expense… and the worst part was she knew he was struggling and it just didn’t seem like she cared until he actually left her. All she seemed to care about was herself, her body building competitions, etc. if she put half that energy into her marriage then maybe there would have been a different outcome. She just came across as self absorbed, she didn’t care that Terry was happy until he finally left her.

I was rooting for Terry to find happiness. I didn’t love that he immediately knocked someone up but I’m glad he got to experience fatherhood. I do wish him and Amy considered alternative routes to parenting. Like what about adoption, an egg donor, a surrogate? Didn’t make sense that they, at one point, desperately wanted kids but didn’t consider all options.

As for Ivan and Amy, seemed like a very physical relationship. Amy relationship with Terry felt more authentic, more real.

Promises Left Behind is an interconnected Standalone from Fractured Hearts series by V.R. Tennent.
This particular story is told through the multiple POVs of Amy Corrigan, Terry Trodden and Ivan Harley.

When it came to the layout of the story, author V.R. had us navigating through time jumps within a few years. Always showcasing the important dates, given all that occurs in the journeys of Amy, Terry and Ivan.
Although it was mainly Amy’s journey, considering it was mostly her story to tell, not only with being the FMC.
But also due to at times a turbulent journey she found herself venturing through in grieving from the loss of her sister Bex, heartbreak when it came to love and failure in her work life.
Ultimately leading towards many ups and downs, from the highs and lows given the metaphorical hits she constantly took.
Yet eventually learned to push pass and keep trudging onwards, no matter the case.

Author V.R. did a good job in showcasing not only realism given that it wasn’t all rainbows and sunshine for any of them from the events and situations faced throughout the stories progression.
But also that there was much more to the story than romance.
Especially given the well written character development of Amy, who we slowly but surely see transform over time, after all that she endured and suffered through.
Proving that although time heals all, it never fully goes away. However that doesn’t mean you can’t move on and rebuild towards a happier life again.

Although it was a good read, there were things that had me in mixed emotions at times and some issues that made the story fall flat.
One being Amy. While she had her good moments, she was also very selfish with only thinking of herself and her happiness. And never listening to others, or willing to see the other side of the situation from someone else’s eyes. In this case Terry was one with not fully hearing him, understanding or truly acknowledging when it came to his situation.
And for that I couldn’t stand her.

A big issue came from Amy and Ivan’s relationship, that did not feel genuine to me.
Given the lack of development, it not only made their relationship seem surface level.
But considering how it was established and the way it quickly grew from there, it added more to the relationship having no real depth in my opinion.
Amy’s relationship with Terry felt more real and authentic regardless of how many years they had been together.
However with Ivan it felt it was more physical than emotional. And for that I just couldn’t really get behind it.

Another issue for me was the ending. It was a let down in not only not feeling like an ending at all.
The way it was left hanging with not having any updates of some of the characters, as well as not knowing what happened to others made it feel incomplete.
But also it felt too rushed in my opinion, particularly with the way it finished off.
In all honesty the ending felt more like the end of a chapter, rather than the end of a story to me. And for that, I was not a fan.

All in all, Promises Left Behind by V.R. Tennent was a good read that provided a thorough storyline in showcasing a journey of loss, grief, heartbreak, failure, to eventually overcome through growth, self-healing, moving on to rebuild and second chances.

Amy has been dealing with grief from losing her sister. Even if she tries that has affected every aspect of her life; but her marriage is the most affected. When it ends she is left with a broken heart, more grief, and a business she can’t manage.
With everything crashing, she’s trying to pick herself up. Ivan comes into her life, and although at first they’re pretty much enemies; some sort of truce between them comes forward. Their chemistry is big and they both start thinking there might be more of this relationship.
This book had me crying, it is very emotional! But the feelings, the emotions are all part of what makes this such a beautiful story. Amy being scared of opening her heart again is a process and everything that happens makes her find a way to an answer. It’s a story of grief, growth and finally living life at your fullest, and all that makes it amazing to me.

When Amy experiences the biggest loss of her life, her husband and soulmate Terry is right there with her to pick up the pieces. But sometimes, love isn’t enough and as the realities and hardships of life get in the way of their long term marriage, their worlds explode leaving them to find out who they truly are as individuals and go down a path of self-love and discovery.

The book picks up shortly after where Love Beyond Repair ended so I highly recommend reading that first so you can understand why Bex is such a key character and her impact on all their lives. is the catalyst that sets up the entire story in Promises We Left Behind and while I already knew that this was coming, I wasn’t prepared for how HARD it was going to be to read it and experience For me, Bex’s story was a painful reminder that some happy endings were never meant to be forever, no matter how much you wish for it to be the case. I felt very upset and it helped me relate to Amy so much.

The vibe of this book was mournful, with tides turning and emotions churning, and it wasn’t just the loss of a life that we were meant to mourn, but the loss of a relationship, a marriage, and self identity. Amy deserves the best in life…end of story. She really is the epitome of strength, a reminder to never let a man bring you down and to hold your self-worth and dignity above all else. If he can’t be there during your worst, he doesn’t deserve to be there for you at your best.

And speaking of worst…Terry made me mad…like really mad. Yes he was entitled to his wants and desires in life but he just SO insensitive and selfish, not to mention self centred. I think VR Tennent writes these very human, complex characters that make you love and hate them at the same time but in reality, that’s how real life is. There are no villains and heroes, just people who behave badly and people who get hurt by that. Terry really reminded me of Ben with how dynamic he was as a character.

It was actually Ivan who I really fell in love with! His transformation arc was just so redeeming and satisfying to read. It really impressed me how he went from this single minded aloof guy to the man who yearns and bends. Ivan learns how to be a partner for Amy and I just loved him for it!

These books aren’t your typical cookie cutter usual romances. They really deal with the realities of life, the mess that we encounter throughout and the heartbreaks that are inevitable. . But I’m super looking forward to Pieces of Us and seeing where we go with Lance and Katie’s bumpy story.

Promises Left Behind is the second book in Tennent's Fractured Hearts series. This book centers around Amy Trodden (nee Corrigan).

We met Amy in the first book of the series, Love Beyond Repair, which is her sister Bex's story. At the end of that book we learned This book starts with leaving Amy in despair. She focuses her energies on starting up Bex's New You, the gym for which she signed a lease and promised her win that she would not give up on her dreams. As Amy spends more and more time at her gym a rift occurs between her and her husband, Terry. Terry yearned for the woman he knew but Amy has been throwing herself into work and bodybuilding. All Terry wants is to be a father however they had tried in the past and learned that Amy had unexplained infertility. While Amy feels that stage of life is behind her, she agrees to try one round of IVF for Terry.

Unfortunately, that results as expected. Amy feels like a failure as a woman, but is ready to move on from that dream. Terry however is not and Amy becomes despondent as she is completely heartbroken. She swears she will never allow herself to be hurt this way again.

While holiday shopping, she ends up meeting Ivan Harley at the mall, an acquaintance who never left the best impression. The two end up spending some time together and when he finds himself in a difficult situation with a past lover, claims Amy is his girlfriend. Cue the fake dating trope.

Like the first book in the series, this one is also recounted from multiple POVs. This allows readers to gain insight into not only Amy's frame of mind, but Terry's and Ivan's as well. My heart ached for Amy and all she endured, and I was so angry with Terry. I neither loved nor hated Ivan, but appreciated having some chapters written from his POV in order to get a better sense of the man. I really enjoyed Amy's friend Trey, and I look forward to reading more about her friend Katie as she will be featured in the next book, Pieces Of Us, coming March 2026.

ARC Review of Promises Left Behind by V.R. Tennent
* * * * *
A romance with a second chance...but who is the lover who gets it? Loss, divorce, betrayal, deception, ultimatums and feet-sweeping affairs.

Amy's life was hit by a truck of crud and bad luck.
She lost her sister and best friend, her marriage is strained from the unfortunate inability of conceiving a child, and now her darling husband has pulled whooper. What was once her thriving business and happy love life, is now just a smack in the face.
Enter Ivan.
Arrogant. Cocky. Driven. Cannot take it when someone says no to what he wants. He wants Amy's business, and he plans to get it. What he doesn't plan is fake dating turned into real love.
When the truth comes out of his deception, can Amy risk another heartbreak?

Amy deserves so much better. She is an awesome, strong woman who has taken so much cr*p and turned the rest of her life into something good. Then there is Terry. What was seen as a good guy was just a sappy little man-baby wanting what he believes he deserves after a career that never took off and a child that was not born into his marriage. Ivan, yes, you are very sexy. You give Amy the Os she needs after that little enemies-to-lovers beginning.
Love that we still have Ben and the kids from the first book, as well as a few other familiar faces I hope to see in further reads after a little taste of something that is possiblt going to happen!

This hits again, and as much as I found this one slightly harder than the first book to read, Victoria, AMAZING. For my own personal reasons, Amy and I share some commonalities, and that is a hurt you don't always recover from. We are thankful for our own "Ivan's".

Amy and Terry have been married for many years, they are each other's soulmates, but when Terry wants what Amy can't give him, this is where things become extremely hard to read. But, important. Although it is a tough read, for me, I could also see Terry's side of it all, and when it comes to infertility, sometimes men's grief is not validated, or that drive to be a parent is only viewed from the women's side, but this was hard, promises were broken, choices made.

Ivan, in the beginning, is like a red rag to a bull for Amy, he only see's her business and the fact that unlike other women, she is not impressed by his wealth, his suave, smarmy attitude, no matter how good he looks. This has Ivan chasing more, and we see a different dynamic happen for Ivan and Amy, and after Terry makes his choice and leaves, Ivan is there.

I do not want to give ANYTHING away, but this was a truly beautiful read, even with the heartbreak, and once again I am blown away. I cannot wait for book 3, but Victoria, never stop writing. I loved this.

Amy and Terry have been through a lot together. With Amy’s twin dying and fertility issues. At this point, they are just tolerating each other. Not sure how to reach the intimacy they once had. Amy has realized that she will not be a parent in this lifetime. Not from her own doing. Just that life has taken any chance of parenthood away from her. Terry still dreams of being a father. So, he decides to divorce her to pursue becoming one. Then Amy loses her buisness. When a chance encounter with Ivan. The arrogant man who had already tried to buy her gym. Circumstances put them together. Once they start to learn more about each other. They realize they really didn’t know each other. When Ivan deceives her. She breaks up with him. She already knows how fast “happiness can turn to ash in a second”.
This was an emotionally charged romance. But beautiful too. It will make you cry many times. But it also makes you believe in second chances. I loved every loss, heart break and love found in this book! I just really loved this book! Victoria is just getting better and better at writing love stories.

emotional

I gave this book 4 stars because it is well written and the story is so real.

However, Amy came across as a selfish person. While she was caring for her sister, she claimed she had to push aside both her and Terry’s dream of having kids. However, she had time to focus on bodybuilding. Terry’s dreams of becoming an actor and starting a family were ignored while Amy chased her dream of owning a gym. She degraded him to her friends. I kept hoping she would realize how unfair she was being, and I was really rooting for them to get back together. It was clear that Terry truly loved her. She seemed to be ignoring his feelings. Adoption or surrogacy could have been options, but they weren’t even considered. I didn’t like that Amy kept blaming Terry for the break up of their marriage as it seemed she had given up on the marriage long before and chose to focus on herself.

For the first 20 chapters I read this book with a box of tissues. It is full of emotion.

I think the book focused more on the marriage and that was depressing. I would have rather had more romance drama.

Just finished Promises Left behind by Vr Tennent book 2 of the Fractured Heart Series. It follows Amy as she struggles in her marriage to Terry while trying to convince for years, her twin was sick, then passing away, filling the void becoming a body builder while Terry has been working in a kitchen for 20 years. It all comes to a fault when Terry decides to leave Amy after her telling him she’s done trying for a baby. Amy is heartbroken but throws herself in her work and her work outs. She meets Ivan. Having losing her husband because she can’t do what a basic woman should be able to do, losing her sister will she open her heart again or will she fear her heart getting broken once again? I love this book. Yes Terry is a total jerk who deserves his lonely ending. I love the character growth of Amy coming into her own from being hyper focused on filling a void to learning to be happy again. The spice in the book was good. It is abit of a slow burn between Amy and Ivan. But it flows naturally.

Wow, what a wild emotional ride! So good! I read the first novel in this series and really enjoyed it. This novel did not disappoint. I was so excited to jump back into this series. This novel delivered, I love a good slow burn and this novel checked so many boxes for me while taking me on such a emotional wild ride. From the first chapter this novel reached across the pages and grabbed my heart and held on tight until the very last page. My heart hurt for Amy and all she had been thru with Terry. I loved the slow burn with Ivan and their chemistry was crazy. I loved watching Amy picking up the pieces of her life and trying to maneuver with her new normal. I loved watching Ivan and Amy together, the chemistry was crazy. This novel took me on such a wild ride. I was on the edge of my seat trying to figure out how it was all going to end. So good! I can hardly wait to see what this author has coming next. So good!

I absolutely loathed this book. I was going to add it to my DNF pile after page 87, but continued to skim because I wanted to know what happens to Terry.

Amy and Terry are introduced in the first book of this series ... Bex is Amy's twin, and she reunites with her one true love Ben after so much bollocks, only to find out she has terminal cancer. Amy and Terry are great in that book, but in this one, they are both kind of awful.

Amy is an absolute bitch in this book. Honestly, what a horrible character. If I was Terry, I would've left her long before he actually did. He wanted to be a father, and although he does find that in this book, it's a loveless relationship for him.

Amy also finds someone else, but honestly, she prances around like an absolute twat for this entire book. I despised her character.

If you read the first book and liked it, I suggest not reading this.

This book felt like one of the realest books I’ve read. It wasn’t all rainbows and butterflies but actual real life problems people face on the daily. Of failures, losses, love and life. It follows Amy’s story, navigating life after the loss of her sister in book 1, which was truly heartbreaking. Dealing with grief while trying to move on, a wedding crumbling, and rebuilding her life after failure, showing that it’s never too late to get back up after life knocks you down.
I really did enjoy it though I found Amy somewhat selfish, to an annoying extend. But then again that’s how some people deal with grief, or maybe that was just me.

In general it’s a very good book, and it’s quite refreshing to see a story more in touch with reality, showing people’s imperfections.
Thank you for the ARC Mrs. Tennent.

This book was actually pretty good.
some spoilers ahead but not really

I've read some of the other books this author has published, and they always leave me with a weird feeling. Like a good idea, but not properly told kind of feeling. This book, however, fixed that. The lines between OWD and Cheating are blurred here. Terry is an asshole, but his feelings are valid; however, after being married for as long as they have, it seems a bit of a stretch when you're 50+ years old. Nonetheless if was a good book. I wish there wasn't so much intertwined with other books (sister's story, best friend's story) seemed like a lot was going on at one point, and the FMC chose to go on vacation with her fake bf instead of going to New York after her soulmate BFF was in a life-threatening accident. Read at your own risk for heartbreak because this book did get me emotional.

I adored the OG version of this story it resonated so much in me when I read it so I was dubious about the rewrite! however I shouldn't have worried Amy was in safe hands!

If books could be a break up song this would be mine!

Amy is my fav FMC and goes through so much which will be so relatable to a lot of readers!

Hard topics in the book are dealt with in a delicate and real way nothing is sugar coated its just honest and I love that about the authors writing x

Terry never deserved Amy and its so easy to see how you can just coast through life and not realise your not happy! im so glad Amy got her HEA it was so well gained!

Highly recommend!

⭐⭐⭐⭐.5/🌶️🌶️🌶️

"Promises Left Behind," the second book in VR Tennent’s Fractured Heart Series, follows Amy as she copes with a troubled marriage. After losing her twin and turning to bodybuilding, Amy faces heartbreak when Terry leaves following her decision to stop trying for a baby. She finds solace in her work and fitness routines.
She meets Ivan after losing her husband and sister. Unsure whether to risk heartbreak again, Amy's relationship with Ivan is electric.🔥🔥🔥 The novel kept me guessing until the end—an exciting and enjoyable read.

This book was so fantastic, it made me feel all the emotions. It felt so real. I was completely blown away.

At first I felt sorry for both Amy and Terry of the stuff they had to go through in their relationship. Some of the issues are so relatable for me, so I could see both perspectives and understand their feelings, but as I read I became incredibly angry with Terry. What a douchebag. I was so sad for Amy. Her HEA was so deserved!

It was, just like the first book in this series, such a beautiful book, I can’t wait for pieces of us!

Book two follows Amy, she has lost her sister Bex from book one. While this was well written I have to say I was not a big fan of Amy. She came off as a selfish and neglectful FMC. Terry her husband had genuine concerns and feelings that I personally felt she disregarded. Fast forward in comes Ivan an a man who is used to getting what he wants again me personally I did not feel they really had that much of real deep connection hence the business secret revealed. Anyway it was well written nonetheless.

book two in the Fractured Hearts series. when she married she knew it was forever till it was not. when her husband walks away because she can’t give him what he desires her world break. holding on to the only thing her sister left, she won’t sell. ivan is a man’s man. nobody tells him no. especially any woman. he makes it his mission to get what he wants. then he makes the mistake. he falls hard. when she finds out another man has betrayed her she looses it and asked him to leave. now ivan is on another mission to make her see how sorry he. this time around he will fight to claim his girl.

The devastation and heartbreak and love lost and found in this one is just right. Ivan Harley , well the man who is an alpha asshole and is putty for our Amy is just a sight to see. Such a wonderful read and pulls your heart strings to the brim. Loved it!!!

I am still recovering from Promises Left Behind. Talk about a second in series. I’m not sure there’s an emotion left untouched in this one. Characters you loved in book one may not be your favorites anymore. If I really start talking it’ll be spoiler explosion. All I will say is, if you enjoyed Love Beyond Repair, DO NOT miss this follow up and strap in for the ride.

Well done VR Tennent. This one blew my mind.

The loss, heartache and betrayal feel like you are there going through it the them all. It touches real issues and shows that you are worth so much more than life dishes out sometimes.
Extremely well written and following on from the loss of Amy’s twin sister Bex.

A marriage in trouble -- Terry & Amy -- that has slowly withered because of another, more urgent, situation. Once that is settled, Amy realizes that they have grown into different people and neither of them are on the same path. Terry tries to resurrect the baby issue, but Amy feels that she no longer needs that in her life. Conscious uncoupling is inevitable, heartbreak, and pain, and Amy wonders if she will ever have happiness again.

This is the second book in the fractured heart series. I strongly recommend reading book 1 to put everything into context, but it isn’t essential.
Once again the author sends us on a rollercoaster of emotions.
There is heartbreak, love and new beginnings.
This is Amy’s story and at times I had no sympathy for her and at others I could have cried for her. I wanted to punch her husband Terry🤣but what comes around goes around.
A great read.

This book has good character development and a real world view of real life situations. I think the FMC can be viewed as a bit selfish at times, but I think all people can be considered selfish sometimes.

I received an ARC copy of this book. This story follows Amy and her journey to discovering life after a not so forvever I Do. She goes through alot and in the end the person she dislikes the most is the person that is there for her when she needed it. It gave me all the emotions and then some. I loved the drama, the love, the dislike and everything in between. Another great book by the author

This was an emotional and tender read about grief, second chances and learning to trust your heart again. Amy’s journey felt raw and heartfelt, while Ivan’s quiet strength made her feel comforting and hopeful. He doesn’t come in to “fix” Amy or replace what she’s lost. Instead, he offers patience and understanding that allows her to heal at her own pace.
