This book??? Had me giggling, sobbing, kicking my feet, and screaming into the void. FIVE. STARS. PERIOD. I cried ugly tears, laughed like a lunatic, and basically lost all sense of reality( GOOD FOR ME ).
BECAUSE THE CHEMISTRY BETWEEN THESE TWO? FIRE.
Their relationship was the perfecttttttt mix of sweet, messy, otherworldly, chaotic, and addictive.
BORED??? Pfffft, I've never heard of her.

Even though not much was happening, I WAS TOTALLY HOOKED... and maybe, just maybe, that was because what really got me was how fucking real these characters felt to me every emotion they shared hit me like a brick to the face and had me BEGGING: "MOREEEE, GIVE ME MORE!"

Honestly, I adored this story so much (obviously) that I forgot why, hahahahaha. It’s like so many details have slipped my mind, but the feelings it stirred up in me???
Those are unforgettable. For good.

Let’s be real,✨️the epilogue✨️ was exactly what sealed the deal for me. It turned a great book into a FIVE-STAR experience. It was the cherry on top, the thing that made my heart so full I could barely handle it, and my eyes leaked joy.
The exact ending I eagerly wanted all along and maybe more 😭🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

PS: at first, The reviews had me side-eyeing this book real hard, but then alexandra was like, “Girl, just read it, I think you're gonna like it” and now here I am . Bless your soul for that rec, sweetheart!

Even if it kills me not to touch him. Giving into this undeniable chemistry between us would burn both our worlds down.

Sweet and short romance, but it didn’t really… speak to me?
A slow burn, sort-of-hate to friends to lovers — but it lacked chemistry and substance.

And it’s truly an incredible thing—to be seen.

I had fun with the spice, with the initial banter between Spencer and Kade. But the rest was just a tad meh.

There wasn’t much of a bond between Spencer and Elijah, Kade’s son. The plot had a couple tense moments that had little to no influence on the story itself. The romance didn’t quite feel romantic.

Even though I enjoyed Burn It Down and Nicole Dykes’ books are always very quick and easy to get through, I didn’t fully love it.

“Let’s burn this world down, baby. You and me. One step at a time.”

“Because whether he knows it or not yet, every single part of mine is most certainly his to claim.”

No surprise there, I found myself finishing a Nicole Dykes’ book in a day. I don’t know what the author puts in her writing but it’s so addictive, and bingeable, I can’t stop reading!

Burn it Down follows the romance between Kade and Spencer. In high school, Spencer used to have a crush on the former, while being bullied by Kade’s friends, and he realized that many years after, this crush may not have disappeared as he thought. On the other hand, Kade is a single father. He lost his wife, Megan, leading him to start a new life as a firefighter.

After an accident, Kade and his son, Elijah, decide to move to Kade’s hometown where he meets Spencer once again, who’s his son’s teacher.

Their story is what I would call a true slow-burn. They didn’t start as friends; Spencer was being quite hard and rude towards Kade because of his past. I personally didn’t mind this part. In fact, I loved their banter when they were ‘enemies’, and Spencer’s personality was quite entertaining. Their chemistry was undeniable, and I appreciated how open and caring they were for each other as the story continues. Both characters were pleasant to follow, and I really thought this book would be more than a four-stars read for me. Alas, a lot of things bothered me.

For example, I didn’t feel any connection between Elijah and Spencer. Apparently, Spencer loved his teacher a lot, but we don’t see any moments or scenes between the two of them just together. For a single father romance, I wished the author showed us a bit more of this aspect.

Kade’s brother, Bowen, wasn’t a character I particularly liked either. It’s something that surprised me a lot considering I loved the bond between the Rhodes siblings in Only Temporary, but in this one, I was just annoyed with Bowen (he’s described as a playboy/manchild).

Now, onto the sensitive topic: the dead wife trope. It’s probably one of the hardest tropes to write, because it’s not often written in a…romantic way (to put it simply). I usually ask myself this question: if the dead spouse was still alive, would the MC still be with the other MC?

While I won’t deny the love Kade and Spencer have for each other, I was left wondering. I appreciated that Kade’s late wife wasn’t portrayed as the villain despite her mistakes and issues, and I wasn’t bothered by the fact she held a big part in his past. I get it. Truly. However, at 80%, Yeah. Cool.

Even better, after her death, Just…why? Before the 80% mark, this trope was handled beautifully. Kade and Spencer’s sweet moments were so swoony. And then, the cold shower!

I won’t say it ruined their relationship because it didn’t and I still love them a lot, but it left a bad taste in my mouth. Maybe, I’m a bit sensitive. Maybe, I’m overreacting. Maybe. But OWD (Other Woman Drama)/OMD (Other Man Drama) is a strong pet peeve for me in second chance and/or single parent romances. I don’t like it, and I never will. I just want the reassurance that the MC will always choose the other MC, and sadly, with this information, I wasn’t quite sure. At the end, Kade called Spencer the love of his life, so there's that.

Overall, it was an enjoyable story, but I wanted something more. Something that didn’t left me question their relationship, because, as it is…their bond just felt convenient.

I absolutely loved the first 85% of this book. It was sweet, inspiring, and gave me exactly what I was craving. The bi-awakening was beautifully done, the slow burn hit just right, and I always have a soft spot for those tender, meaningful first times. I really admired Spencer’s strength—watching him face his demons and grow was one of the highlights for me. Kade’s reconnection with his mom was also handled with care, and Elijah completely stole my heart. He’s a tough, funny, and sensitive kid who added so much to the story.

I also appreciated how the book treated the memory of Kade’s late wife. Even with all her flaws and mistakes, she was portrayed with respect, not turned into a villain just to move the story forward. That kind of nuance always stands out to me.

This was a second chance of sorts for Spencer and Kade, who had history from high school—unresolved tension, silent crushes, and a lot of unspoken pain. Spencer had been bullied by Kade’s friends, and he always blamed Kade for standing by and doing nothing. But Kade had his own struggles back then, dealing with his alcoholic mother and just trying to survive. This setup gave their reconnection a lot of emotional weight… but I think the story would have been even stronger with a few flashbacks to those teenage years. It would’ve helped ground their history and made their present-day reunion hit harder.

My main issue is that, like in some of Nicole Dykes' other books, the ending felt rushed. Important developments were told rather than shown—especially around how Spencer and Kade built their life together and how Elijah adjusted to all the changes. For example, we hear that Elijah starts sleeping over at Spencer’s, that they spend Christmas with Kade’s mom, that Spencer tells the school principal about who he’s dating… but we don’t actually see any of these moments. I missed that emotional follow-through.

The bond between Spencer and Elijah also needed a little more time on page. I wanted to really feel their connection—especially considering how central it is to the story—but it felt more like we were told it existed instead of seeing it build organically. Spencer is Elijah’s teacher, which adds complexity to their dynamic, but the book doesn’t really explore how that boundary was handled, how it might have affected their relationship, or even how other kids or staff at school reacted. There was so much potential there for tension, tenderness, or conflict, but instead it was just… accepted and moved on from without much reflection.

One moment in particular pulled me out of the story—when Bowes is hurt, Elijah, who’s clearly traumatized by injury and loss, is taken to the hospital with them. It just didn’t make sense, especially when Spencer could have stayed behind to support him. That scene didn’t feel true to the characters we’d come to know.

All in all, I did really love this story. The chemistry, the personal growth, the sweet awkwardness of falling for someone you never stopped thinking about—it’s all there. I just wish the ending had taken a bit more time to land, and let us sit with those important milestones instead of skipping past them. Still, I’m glad I read it and would definitely recommend it to readers looking for a hopeful, emotional romance with a slow burn and soft edges.

4.5⭐️ rounded up.

I absolutely adored this.
I have to admit that I struggled for the first 30%, because even though I knew it was just because he was scared, Spencer was being a dick.
Once he got over it, I loved the rest of the book so much!
Kade was my favourite, and I also loved his brother, Bowen.
Kade's son, Elijah, was a little sweetie.

So happy I finally got around to reading this one.

This is just another typical book from this author, they're all so much alike, you can't really get it wrong, you know immediately they're from this author. They're structured alike, same developments, that italic sentence at the end of each chapter, so it's a simple, cheesy love story with a lot of sex and a sappy ending.

🔵 Former popular guy, kind of bully?, loner? - I was confused, really / nerd
🟡 Time span 7-8 years (18-25)
🟢 Single dad
🟣 Small town
🟢 Some pining from both ends, but not convincing
🟠 Gay / bi-awakening
🌶️ Descriptive sex scenes; frotting, oral, rimming, penetrative; both vers, but mostly t/b in the book

Kade is a firefighter that lost his girlfriend in a fire and came back to his small home town with his little son, now both living with Kade's brother Bowen (a very good side character).

When Kade enrolls his son to school, he meets Spencer, his teacher, and slowly starts falling for him. That's the gist of it.

The story would be much better if Kade would be an actual former bully. But as it was, for the longest time I didn't have any idea why Spencer was so resentful towards Kade and didn't want to have anything to do with him, then by the very end you realize he wanted Kade to save him from his group of friends that were actually bullying him - it made no sense, not for me.

These guys were apparently both pining for each other in high school, but then Kade didn't really recognize Spencer at first and in the second half of the book it's said he had a major crush on him all that time.

So, not really believable and not well told. If he'd recognized Spencer, I'd believe it, but as it was, both Kade and Bowen were constantly asking themselves who the hell is actually Spencer, so no, not really a good setting.

They were talking about forever and love way too soon. It's a light love story and was about to get sappy, I expected it, but it didn't really develop well for that love to be present so soon. Sex - it was great, love - pushing it a little bit.

The bi-awakening was good, nothing dramatic, just good sex and Kade's family dynamic was entertaining.
Despite the heavy topics it was a light story. Easily and quickly read.

I am interested in Bowen and Will's book, very much so.

Wow, I finished this in one day, I literally devoured it! It’s been a while since a book completely hooked me like this. It was so addictive.

First, let’s start with the characters. We’re following Kade and Spencer, who have a complicated history from high school. Spencer went through a lot of bullying back then, mostly at the hands of Kade’s friends. And even though Kade wasn’t directly involved or noticed the bullying, Spencer still held him responsible. So when they meet again years later, Spencer now being the kindergarten teacher of Kade’s son Elijah...... yeah, things aren’t exactly smooth at first.

But once all the misunderstandings are cleared up, their relationship blossoms into one of the sweetest I’ve ever read. The way they understand each other is truly special. Kade’s gentle support as Spencer realises his self-worth is absolutely precious. And Spencer’s unwavering support for Kade’s career, even with the risks involved, is deeply moving. He sees Kade for the hero he really is and it’s beautiful.

And don’t even get me started on the side characters.... Tori (the protective big sis), Bowen (Kade’s older brother), Elijah..… I adored them all. Nicole Dykes never disappoints when it comes to writing found family, and this book is yet another perfect example of that.

The story also touches certain topics like addiction, alcoholism, parental negligence, postpartum depression, etc. But all of these topics are handled with atmost care.

I really loved this. And hope everyone gives this one a try.
I can't wait to read Bowen and Will's story next. Definitely felt their chemistry in this one.

Spencer & Kade were so dang good. Something about them got me right in my feels. Their devotion and care for each other was so sweet. Kade’s protectiveness for his son & family made me tear up at times. Watching Spencer grow and overcome internalized trauma and let himself fall in love and be loved was so heartwarming. I just love them so much and didn’t want it to end.

If you’re looking for a very sweet, easy, fun love story about two people who weren’t looking for love but found it anyways, Kade and Spencer are for you.

I always love Nicole’s books because they’re just always sweet, always hot, and they always give me all the good feelings without the drama. You don’t have to think too hard to enjoy this story, and it was just want I needed.

Kade moves back to his hometown with his young son after a fire leaves this firefighter injured and broken. He’s staying with his older (super fun!) brother and is trying to give his son some peace while they both move on from this tragic event.

This is where he runs into his son’s new teacher, a man who he couldn’t stop staring at back in high school.

Spencer is a little closed off. A little broken himself, and a little resentful of Kade. But that unrequited crush he had on him back in the day? Apparently has come back with a vengeance.

These two were so much fun together ! Just really supportive, really proud of one another, and they really cared a whole lot about what the other was feeling and going through. They had me giggling, laughing, and wishing to be a fly on the wall for every moment.

I definitely feel like I need some more firefighter romances in my life now 😌 or maybe some more teacher romances? All of them? Together? Either way, I enjoyed every minute.

Burn It Down is a teacher/parent MM romance story about Kade and Spencer.

Kade is a firefighter and single dad. After an accident, he moves with his son Elijah back to his small hometown he grew up in. When Kade takes Elijah to meet his first grade teacher, he discovers his son’s new teacher is Spencer. Spencer had a crush on Kade growing up and is not at all thrilled to see him. They have a history from high school. Spencer was bullied by Kade’s friends and holds this against him. But what Spencer didn’t realize is that Kade had his own struggles back then.

I have to say I did struggle a bit with how hard Spencer was on Kade in the beginning, especially when we learn later in the story that he forgave the people that actually bullied him pretty quickly. Once they got past this, it was great to see Kade and Spencer get a second chance. I really enjoyed seeing them fall for each other. And even though this was Kade’s first time with a man, I liked how Kade accepted his sexuality and was all in. They did face some challenges with being together, especially since they didn’t know how the school and community would react to Spencer being gay and dating a parent of one of his students.

There were some great side characters in this story, especially Kade’s siblings. His brother Bowen had a great connection with Elijah, and I just wish we had gotten scenes with Spencer and Elijah so that we could see them bond as well.

Overall, I enjoyed Kade and Spencer’s story. They were supportive of each other and truly cared for one another. If you are looking for a single dad, feel good, small town romance story, you definitely should check this one out.

I received an advanced copy of this book, and this is my honest review.

Teacher x firefighter x second chance x I SAW WHO YOU WERE???? Yes. Please!

Once again, nobody does small town love like Nicole! Kade and Spencer were just so adorable. Both of them were lowkey obsessed with each other in high school but neither of them did anything about it, and I loved that little tid bit.

Highlight for me was Kade. This wonderful man, father, brother and firefighter. I appreciated that he had a great backstory and it made his love for his son over the moon amazing. Elijah was just the funniest little guy ever and he’s so lucky to be surrounded by so many great men!

Spencer irritated me at first but I understand why he was so closed off and hurt from the past. I think the way he showed love toward Kade and Elijah was everything those two needed and more.

I did want MORE of Spencer and Elijah. More scenes of their progress from teacher x student to step-son x stepdad. I think it would’ve added so much more depth to the story as the ending did feel a little rushed. For as much importance Kade put on Elijah being on with Spencer, we didn’t see them interact at home.

I NEED BOWEN AND WILL IMMEDIATELY PLEASE AND THANK YOUUUU. 💕

Ah sweet Kade and prickly Spencer. This book is chock full of all the reasons I adore Nicole Dykes’s books, found family, inherently good characters, small town life, warmth and feeling threaded through and tons of character growth. I loved Elijah, I have to put that out there first, what a tough kid. And I love that Kade puts him first without compromising his own identity.

Spencer has been attracted to the big brawny hottie that is Kade since high school. Years later when the single dad moves home a lot of Spencer’s triggers from that time come marching back in. But these two are clearly meant to be and Kade gently and tenaciously works through them all. Swooniest of swoons. Highly recommend checking this one out.

I am excited to read about Bowen and Will, those two were throwing off sparks through out.

I was unconvinced I was going to love this. Firefighter romances can be pretty hit and miss for me but this one was definitely a hit!

- Single Dad
- Small Town

A second chance romance with your high school crush…except they hate your guts because your friends used to bully him. Add in a cute 6 year old who gets to watch his teacher fall in love with his dad and you’ve got a great book.

This is my first Nicole Dykes book but I’ll be back for more! I’m really looking forward to Will and Bowen’s story.

I can always count on Nicole to deliver a feel-good, heartwarming love story—and this one absolutely lived up to my expectations. It had everything I love about her writing: well-developed characters, swoony and sweet moments, cozy small-town vibes, and a strong found-family dynamic.

This story follows Kade, a firefighter who returns to his hometown after surviving a terrifying fire accident. The trauma has left his son, Elijah, anxious and fearful about Kade's profession. In this new chapter of his life, Kade meets Spencer—Elijah's new teacher and someone he once went to high school with, though they never interacted back then. Spencer holds a grudge against Kade based on a misunderstanding, which takes time to resolve. But once the past is behind them, their connection grows into a solid friendship and eventually a beautiful, heartfelt relationship filled with sweetness, passion, and genuine care.

I loved how deeply Kade was invested in their relationship—there was no hesitation, no second-guessing. He knew what he wanted, and he pursued Spencer with certainty and devotion. The bond between Spencer and Elijah was also heartwarming and showed just how perfect Spencer was for both of them. Their happily-ever-after was emotional, sincere, and incredibly satisfying.

The supporting cast added even more depth to the story. Bowen stood out as an absolute favorite, and I can’t wait for his story. The family dynamics throughout the book were warm and real. Spencer’s best friend, Janelle, was another standout character who added humor and heart.

Overall, this story was a beautiful, comforting read. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys Nicole’s books or is looking for a feel-good, small-town romance with heartfelt emotion and genuine connection.

I loved the tropes from this one and was so excited as I got an ARC for this gem 😍

Spencer & Kade have known each other since highschool, but they weren't close at all. Kade became a dad to an adorable son and life has been pretty rough to them. Spencer is such a cutie, being Elijah's teacher and pining over Kade from afar 🤭

I really loved the writing of this book, and the story had a great pace. I was really hooked by these MCs and couldn't wait for their development throughout this story 🌺

Elijah really had me all emotional sometimes 🤧 I'm so glad he has Kade and Spencer 🥺

Nicole Dykes is a go to author for me for low angst, fluffy HEAs. Burn it Down is just that.
Firefighter x teacher, single dad, (somewhat) second chances, and found family. The firefighter aspect does bring some “angst”, but overall this book is low angst and full of sweet, fluffy feels. This was a pretty quick read and I really enjoyed it!

DNF @ 33%

Intro was a bit clunky with the dialogue feeling forced. I'm never really a fan of having characters explicitly talk in ways that wouldn't make sense just got the sake of exposition, and both of Kade's siblings did just that when they talked about Kade's dead wife and their mother respectively.

Spencer's intro chapter was weirdly whiplashy at the start. He specifically called out to Kade and began asking him questions about his life, but when Kade tried to ask back, he goes "We don't need to do this" as if he hasn't just tried to catch up.

Also did Kade remember him or not? He seemed to remember Spencer's high school appearance when he talked to his brother then the whole "I did see you though" and his declaration that he was jealous of Spencer's freedom. What? Where the heck did that come from? If Kade did remember then we should've been given an "I remember him!" somewhere afterwards to make it clear he did and what he recalled, because as it was, he just went from "Spencer who?" to his brother to then "he was skinnier in high school" and "I was jealous of you" with no acknowledgement of recollection.

Then we get a chapter about Kade just casually dropping a sentence about being outed and his sexuality (which was very confusing considering he'd been confused about why he was drawn to Spencer. Like if you know you can be attracted to guys, why are yoy so confused about being drawn to one?) and he gives a quick summary about high school where he was supposedly popular and got along with everyone when just on the previous chapter he mentioned he didn't have friends (which, if he's claiming that didn't consider the people he hung out his friends, there should've been a clearer example or declaration)

I'm DNF-ing primarily because of the lack of polish and all of the contradictions that made it frustrating to read. Kade apparently remembered himself staring at Spencer a lot back then, but somehow didn't remember his name or that they went to school together in the first place in a conversation with his brother (until he magically recalls things in the same conversation, but acts like he still doesn't remember).

Kade didn't he catch on to the fact that Spencer was being bullied by the people Kade surrounded himself with despite all the staring he supposedly did. When the hell was he staring then? When they were alone? If Spencer truly was being jeered at by his peers often enough to hate life, then I find it hard to believe that Kade wouldn't have noticed.

Then there's the whole "btw, I'm not straight" internal dialogue that goes against so many of the "Why am I so draw by Spencer" thoughts.

The story needed a lot of editing to make sure the characters were consistent and their motivations in line with that character because it just felt like the concept of a story was there and the characters were only blurting out things that were convenient for it.

Spencer Bell and Kade Mitchell Supremacy. That is all I can say.

Kade 🧯🚒
When firefighting is your life and a bad fire turns your world upside down, what’s a man to do? Move back to your hometown with your son and start fresh? Yes, the answer is yes. When the time comes around for Kade to bring his son to meet the teacher night the animosity rolling off his son’s new teacher throws him for yet another loop. Why does Mr. Bell hate him and why can’t he stop staring at his son’s teacher?

Spencer 📚🎓
Growing up in a small town and being harassed by the popular kids at school doesn’t make you want to stick around right? Leaving for college was one of the best decisions he could have made, but when there were no openings except at his hometown elementary he comes back. Keeping his brave face on while he navigated being open, out, and one hundred percent himself. In walks his childhood crush who had no clue he existed.

Or did he? As the two try to fix the one sided hate and make peace a beautiful friendship emerges. Is it really only friendship though? Why does Kade keep looking at Spencer like he is the only thing that exists outside his son? Why does Spencer care so much about Kade and his family?

These two had it all. Medium angst, pure love, found family and redemption for their actual family. I have always been the biggest fan of Nicoles work, but this took it to a whole new level. It gave me everything I could have hoped for and more. Another piece of perfection and just an all in all sweet, full of feelings, spicy read that I can’t recommend enough.

If you're looking for a small town romance with a single father who is a firefighter who then falls in love with his sons teacher, this book might be for you.

Kade is a firefighter. He is raising his son Elijah in Kansas City. After an unfortunate incident, he decides the best thing to do for both him and his son is to move back home.

Spencer, who is Elijah's teacher, decides after finishing college to come back home and make a difference in every child's life. He wants all children to have a positive and safe environment in school to grow up in.

Kade and Spencer meet, and the tension starts there. Especially from Spencer's side. He remembers Kade right away, and everything he has overcome from growing up in a small town has come back. The bullying and moments he felt alone.

Spencer swears Kade knew about everything. However, it turns out maybe he didn't know? As they begin to talk about their life and what they have been through, Spencer and Kade become close.

How will Kade and Spencer begin this relationship together when everything around them could fall apart?

If you have read Totally Schooled by Nicole Dykes you will like this book. The tension was definitely there for example during their first meeting and well throughout (almost) first half of the book. Once they talk about everything they have this understanding that Kade was not responsible and Spencer is now happy with how his life is now. Overall, it was a great read. I enjoyed it, and it does have a HEA and maybe even possibly another book coming? 👀

This was a sweet, very low angst, spicy read. If you’re looking for an easy romance then I’m sure this would hit the spot. I enjoyed the romance once it started, and I liked Kade’s relationship with his siblings.

Overall this probably just wasn’t the book for me, I’m not a fan of single parent or accidental pregnancy, and usually I’d avoid those tropes, so that’s 100% on me. But I also felt like the romance went from 0 to 100 really fast and I was disappointed by the lack of build up.

I understand the author has taken some other arc reader feedback to make subtle changes to the end, honestly after reading I’m a little disappointed to hear that. For me, I thought the way the author handled Kade’s relationship with his wife worked well, and I liked that Spencer had so much respect for that part of his life. You can love a deceased spouse and still find love again, the two things don’t have to be mutually exclusive and I don’t think it detracts from how much Kade loves Spencer now. I obviously don’t know what the changes will be, but personally I like the current version.

Thank you to the author for the ARC copy.

3.5⭐️

Cute and straight to the point. There is a little misunderstanding there at the beginning between Spencer and Kade, but it’s rectified pretty quickly, and then their relationship takes off. Others have said this was a slow burn, but because their start was in high school and this story is about their present, it felt pretty quick to me. I think the whole thing happens over a month or two, aside from the epilogue.

It’s a pretty simple story, nothing too far-fetched or particularly unique, but I really enjoyed it and couldn’t put it down. Sometimes being predictable is safe; you know what you’re going to get, and I enjoy that steady stream of endearing content.

I think we can pretty much assume Bowen and Will have a story there, and it would be nice to know more about Levi. There are parts where I would have liked more depth, but overall it’s a cute story, low angst considering the firefighting side, and pretty straightforward.

I received an ARC of this from GRR, and this is my honest review.
