The Rift #2

The King’s Betrayal

Rate this book
Trust can be a dangerous thing.
Trusting your instincts, trusting your friends, but more so,
Trusting your heart.
Because the General wasn’t what I thought he was.
No, he was so much more.
More than the cruelty and malice I believed consumed his soul.
More than the darkness in his eyes and the monsters he commanded.
And now he needed my help.
Help with the Rift that ruptured and caused our worlds to collide.
But as the truth started to unravel, I was left asking myself how far into his world was I
willing to let myself fall?
And more than anything…
Would he be there to catch me?
Even after I was caught up in the shadows of…

The King’s Betrayal.

Another addictive one, action and plot help overlook a bit of immaturity. The editing was better and the storytelling was really great. Still a bit too much time in the headspace for my liking, but a lot happened in this book with some mysteries finally solved. There were a few surprises thrown in and The General sure came off as a sexy dom beast.

The end of this one got dark real quick but was well handled in the end. It is a bit gimmicky how they have rather descriptive chapter titles plus the “catch” (aka revelation or hook) that leaves you in suspense wanting more. The last line is in italics so you know it’s important!!

Oh, broke my own rule reading a series that ends on cliffhangers and the next one isn’t due for a couple of weeks. Dammit I did it again…

Trust, hope and adventure.

Picking up right where we left off in The General’s Captive, book one, The Rift Series. Alexandra is finding her way. What she first thought was her situation may not be at all what is in store for her. Alexandra will embark on an adventure filled with trust and hope as she works through her uncertain existence. Had she found her safe haven behind these foreign walls?

A group lead by the King, Atlas. Whose mission it is to keep the ever strengthening dark force contained within, as they learn how and why this force is happening. Will the King have a role for Alexandra to play in his plan to take on this desperate and dire situation? What truths will they learn along the way?

The performances from Amanda Leigh Cobb, James Cassidy and Ryan Lee Dunlap held me captive to their story. The playful banter between the characters had me immersed in their world. The transitions and transformation of each character is superb.

Paranormal is still new to me, I was concerned I would get a little lost. Not the case at all. The flow and pace had me engaged consistently throughout this book as I joined Alexandra and Atlas on their quest.

Stephanie and E.M. leave us with a cliffy, in unexpected circumstances. Waiting to see where this story will take us in book three. I have a question or two I hope to see answered. Can’t wait to find out!

Sometimes things aren’t what they seem, and everything you think you know could be a lie.

This one was GOOD. I’m really glad I stuck with the series because this installment definitely picks up — way more action, more tension, and the truth finally starting to come to light. The romance is evolving nicely alongside all the chaos, which kept me locked in.

I enjoyed this one more than the first, and it really feels like the series is finding its stride now.

And no lie… chapter 30 had me freaking out 🤯

Alex got some moves to make or Atlas will make the wrong move!

For the audiobook — Ryan Lee Dunlap as Riley? Intense, creepy, and exactly how I like it 😌🎧

Thank you to Bluenose for the ALC! ✨

*Audiobook Review*
Book 2 picked up right where book 1 ended. I love how there is never a dull moment and it's fast paced. Things are coming together and some questions were answered but by the end, I had more. I need book 3 now!

Performed in duet multicast by Amanda Leigh Cobb, James Cassidy, & Ryan Lee Dunlap. Wonderful narration.

I was hoping this would continue with the excitement of the first book but unfortunately it didn't. It was so slow and each page you were waiting for the answers but they were dragged out until I didn't care what the answers were. There also didn't seem to be that much chemistry between Alex and the general. Lots of tension but Alex couldn't seem to make up her mind between Riley and the general and considering she told Riley she loved him, it seemed strange to me. I'm afraid I lost interest and didn't finish it. I seem to be doing that a lot lately so whether that's down to me or the the quality of the writing/storyline in fantasy books I'm not sure. I fear it may be the latter.

This sequel, wastes zero time dropping you straight back into a world that is already hanging on by a thread—and then decided to cut the thread entirely.

It picks up right where book one left off and immediately cranks everything to a level that feels borderline illegal.

No mercy, no warm up, just straight into chaos; survival isn’t guaranteed, hope feels like a liability, and every choice has consequences.

And the tension??
Disgustingly good.😮‍💨🔥

Survival isn’t just about staying alive anymore—it’s about who you trust, who you love, and what you’re willing to become in a world that is actively unraveling.

Yeah… they said “slow burn” love triangle in book one and then came back swinging throwing our MCs into the pressure cooker in this installment.

Also—let’s talk about the lore for a second.

Because these authors really said “you thought you understood this world?” and then proceeded to peel it back layer by layer until you’re sitting there questioning EVERYTHING. The expansion of the mythology, the creatures, the way the two worlds bleed into each other—it’s even more immersive.

As for the twists…

Dis👏re👏spect👏fullllll! Truly.

This is the kind of ending that has you staring into the void like:
…no the fuck it did not just end like that!

But in the way that like, has you immediately ready to sell a kidney for book three, ya know?

I legit sat my car for five minutes after the end, shaking my head with a devilish grin on my face repeating to myself: that was so fucking good for no reason😂🔥👏

And listenNNN Linda, if you have the option for audio? TAKE IT.

The narration brings this broken, beast-ridden world to life in a way that feels cinematic as hell. Amanda Leigh Cobb, James Cassidy, & Ryan Lee Dunlap absolutely transport you. Running, fighting, surviving right alongside them.

Blue Nose Audio audio compliments their performance, with a clean & crisp production.

Bottom line:
Do not hesitate. Do not overthink. Do not pass go.

Go read this. Immediately.

A continuation of this Dark Dystopian Fantasy Romance starts where book one, The General’s Captive, left off as FMC Alexandra is now in the hands of the frightening General's grasp, and she finally sees exactly what is going on behind the walls of the old prison where humans are being kept and his army trains for battle. We get to see more into his thoughts and what is really going on with his army of beasts from that realm where the earth cracked open and took over 3 states, leaving all the humans there either dead or fighting for their lives. We also find out the general's real name and why he and Alex are connected. Knowing full well this man can snap her like a twig, Alex loves to push his buttons, and she continues to do that in this book. To avoid additional spoilers of either story, I will leave it at that.

What to Expect:

Human-like Shifter x Human
Strong Snarky FMC
Enemies to Lovers
Body Markings on FMC and MMC
Strong MMC with Rare Abilities
Dark Force Getting Stronger
Misunderstanding
Corrupted Friend
Shared Dream State
Kidnapping
Future Visions
Found Family

😍 Let’s give credit to the voice acting in this audiobook. James Cassidy’s voice is like a thick velvety hot chocolate spiked with whisky, dangerously delightful. Amanda Leigh Cobb and Ryan Lee Dunlap give passion and expression, as in any great movie or TV acting. This was an excellent performance by all.

Thank you to BluenoseAudio for the ALC of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review. I was so happy that this audiobook is releasing so soon after book one because it had me hooked, and I blew through it in one day. I wanted to know what happened next, and I got it. The same happened with this one, and I couldn’t stop listening to it! I had to force myself to go to bed and finish it the next morning. This was also left on a cliffhanger, so I'm hoping the 3rd audiobook is released just as fast.

This picks up right where we left off with Alex realising the General is not who she thought he was. The secrets are starting to come out and there are more than a few revelations Alex has to work through whilst also finding herself torn between the two MMCs. Amanda Leigh Cobb continues to completely endear Alex to me with her performance; she is one of my favourite bright snarky narrators and just sparkles.

Alex's humour is one of my favourite parts about the character and the banter is more of the smouldering kind compared to book one. I was feeling so conflicted about the love triangle as I loved Riley in book one and although it's pretty clear who is end game, I couldn't see how this was going to unfold. There is something about how vague Riley's past has been that has me wondering what the reveal is going to be. I did miss Ryan Lee Dunlap as Riley is off page for most of the book but I am looking forward to hearing more of him in the next book after that ending which took an absolute turn.

It's lower on the action stakes compared to book one with the focus largely being on Alex and the General's relationship. James Cassidy's General though; wow, I am completely won over. There were plenty of swoony moments but I think the tantrum at the lift may have been my favourite part! It was just perfect listening to that in duet - I could practically hear the foot stomping.

I loved hearing more about the mythology of the General's world and I'm hoping we get to see the other side of the Rift in the next book. The gear change in the last couple of chapters has left me with some many questions and I am looking forward to book three already.

My interpretation of the star system;
3 stars - I enjoyed it; would read the author again
4 stars - I really liked it; I am invested and definitely want more from this author/series
5 stars - I loved it; I engaged with this book completely until I finished it and it is one I will re-read

I received this ALC from Blue Nose Audio and I want to thank them for it. This audiobook was narrated in duet, really multicast with epic narrators voiced by Amanda Leigh Cobb, James Cassidy and Ryan Lee Dunlap. James as the General is just sheer perfection and Ryan as Riley, is gritty and spellbinding. Amanda is literally in a league of her own. She really just brings Alex to life.

This is Book 2 in The Rift series, and these books keep getting better and better. I finished this ALC in a day! The last we left off, Alex was finally in the hands of the General; however, things are not quite what they seem. Once she began to really look at her surrounding and the people, she concludes that they may have been wrong all along about the General and who they are in relation to the “war”.

She also starts to realize that there’s more to her connection with the General, or Atlas, as we later come to know him - who also happens to be a King. Their story really heats up, and we really get to see the softer side of Atlas. I really love getting his POV and their banter is still off the charts – and we start to see other things that ware off the charts 😉

We learn that Alex blames herself for the opening of the rift and the events that happen afterwards… but if she was the problem with the opening can she also be the solution? And where is Riley in all of this? He’s found Alex but he’s also finds something else… or should I say someone else?

This book ends on another cliffhanger when I tell you, I can’t wait to get to the next installment of this series. They have done it again and I can’t believe more people aren’t talking about this series, but if I have anything to do with it, they will 😊

If you haven’t started this series, then you should and if you like the following, this is the exact series for you:

🔥 Dystopian/Apocalypse world
🔥 Strong FMC
🔥 Mysterious MMC & Golden Retriever MMC w/secrets
🔥 Yearning
🔥 Human-like shifter
🔥 Enemies to lovers
🔥 Found family
🔥 Surprise cliffhanger

It’s addictive in the best possible way. The first one is amazing, but this one is even better! Think of it as a Marvel movie—you get hooked from one movie and BAM! Another one, and you want more!

It’s very suspenseful with so much mystery. You get some questions answered and, of course, more questions along the way. The MMC will make you laugh and giggle a lot, so be prepared for that. This book picks up right after the first one, so it’s a must to read/listen to the first book in the series.

There’s a lot of banter—trust me when I say it’s very entertaining. It will have you wanting to speed-read; that’s how good this is! In my opinion, there’s a lot of development for both MMC & FMC. Each of them is a very strong character in their own way, and they bring a lot to the table for the story.

You’ll be saying “I want more” during and after this book. The authors did amazing with this—the story keeps building and pulls you in. As for the narration, it’s fantastic.

(Amanda Leigh Cobb, James Cassidy, & Ryan Lee Dunlap)

They work amazingly together. You want emotion? They bring it! You want banter? They bring it! You want drama and romance? They bring it! I mean, the list goes on and on in this case.

Overall, it’s an amazing book. The series is one of my favorites, and I can’t wait for the next one!

I highly recommend this to anyone who’s into dark fantasy mixed with enemies-to-lovers.

Thank you, Blue Nose, for the ALC! As always, I enjoyed it ♥️👏🏻🔥

**3.5 stars**

The second installment in the Rift series was much more action-packed and held my attention a bit better than the first book. I appreciated that, as a whole, the romantic aspect was a slow burn, but there were times that it felt like not much was happening. The push and pull between the General and Riley created good tension at first, but the longer the love triangle went on, the more I wanted Alex to make a choice between the two.

I enjoyed the apocalyptic/paranormal feel in both books so far, and hearing about the different monsters. It reminded me a bit of Shadow and Bone, which is a series that I enjoyed. Alex finally gets a glimpse of what secrets the General has been keeping, we learn his true identity, and these ladies end on ANOTHER epic cliffhanger!

The audiobooks have been very enjoyable, and the casting choices make them very easy listens. Amanda Leigh Cobb, James Cassidy, and Ryan Lee Dunlap all give great performances that kept me engaged in the story. Amanda gives a great level of vulnerability to a character that demands it. James gives a dangerous edge, as well as a level of softness, to the General and balances it well. Ryan juggles a number of side characters with ease, and makes them unique and easy to distinguish.

The King’s Betrayal (The Rift Series #2)

by Stephanie Hudson, E.M. Ritchie

🎧 Performed in duet multicast by Amanda Leigh Cobb, James Cassidy, & Ryan Lee Dunlap

Holy mother of all slow burns!!
I liked this one very much. It picks up right where The General’s Captive ends, and I really loved the dynamics here. The trust had to be earned, and you feel that all the way through.

🎧 The audio, ladies and gentlemen, was outstanding.
Amanda Leigh Cobb was absolutely perfect. The emotional impact of her narration was truly felt, the moods, the nuances, the pacing… bravo.

James Cassidy… I think my name is Alexandra now… does that say enough? lol. The freaking King on his knees and that one snippet of narration is branded in my brain.

And that final narration by Ryan Lee Dunlap? So good it was almost a little scary.

I do need book 3 ASAP please.

“You are the only thing I have ever touched that I felt was made for me.”

5⭐️ Audiobook review
Book 1 left me on an intense cliffhanger, the kind of ending that makes you press play immediately. And Book 2 starts exactly where book 1 left off — no pause, no slow build-up, just straight back into the story as if it never stopped.
I listened to Book 1 very quickly because I was hooked from the very beginning… and this one was no different. Once I started, I simply couldn’t stop listening.
This second installment brings a lot of important revelations.
We begin to understand deeper connections, hidden motivations, and truths that completely change the way we see certain characters and events. The story becomes darker, more intense, and emotionally heavier, and you can truly feel the stakes rising with every chapter.
One of the things I appreciated most was getting a better understanding of the General or rather, the man behind the title.
We realize that not everything is black and white, and that many of his choices are driven by duty, loyalty, and the need to protect the people he cares about.
The action is constant, the emotions run high, and the tension never really lets go.
And of course… the ending delivers yet another cliffhanger, the kind that leaves you desperate to know what happens next.
As for the narration, the performances by Amanda Lee Cobb, Ryan Lee Dunlap and James Cassidy truly elevate the story.
Their delivery adds depth to the characters, strengthens the emotional impact and makes the listening experience even more immersive.
If you enjoyed Book 1, Book 2 is an essential continuation.
But be warned… this story will pull you in and refuse to let go.

Story - 5
Narration - 5
Overall - 5

Narration : These 3 narrators knocked it outta the park. The different characters voices that they used were AMAZING! I fell in love with Amanda's voice for Bronte. And Ryan with Riley in those last few chapters.... perfection!! And I officially want James to whisper "always" to me.....once a day!! They really do a fantastic job bringing this story to life!!

Story : I devoured this audio in a day and a half! It picks right back up from that cliffy in book 1 perfectly. I enjoyed learning more about The General / Atlas in this book, and more about Alexs' scars. The way the layers are being pulled back to reveal just enough has my adhd brain trapped by curiosity! It kind of reminds me of domino's. The authors set them up with perfect precision, then ting, smack just 1 plot point, and the chain reaction to follow grabs ahold of you and says "Hold On." And of course we have another Cliffy, again not necessarily a jaw dropping "oh shit!" But definitely intriguing, opening up a whole new little twist I can't wait to see unfold in book 3!!

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW:

Story -❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Spice - 🌶️
Narration - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The King's Betrayal is book #2 in The Rift Series. It's not often to find a series that just keeps getting better, but this one hits the mark with me. The story picks up right where book #1 left off. Alex discovers her enemy is more than he seems. The General discovers his heart wants what he fears he cannot have. Riley is the wild card in this story. The nonstop intrigue, suspense, and angst had me binge this one way later than expected. And the final plot twist cliffhanger...AMAZING! I can't wait for the next installment.

The multicast narration is once again phenomenal. James Cassidy, Ryan Lee Dunlap, and Amanda Leigh Cobb brings even more energy to their character voices. And may I say, the creepy, ghostly voice that Mr. Dunlap delivers at the end...slow clap 👏👏! 5/5 I-will-find-you stars for this trio!

We go straight back into the drama and chaos that we left in book 1.

I’m really loving this series so much I think I know what’s happening and I am wrong every time. I loved the development of the relationship between Alex and Atlas it was so beautiful.

We didn’t get to see much of Riley until the last couple of chapters and wow did he make up for his short appearance those chapters were so jam packed with action I couldn’t stop listening.

The performance in these books are so good Amanda Leigh Cobb really excels as Alexandra she delivers such a fierce performance. James Cassidy really shows a new softer side to Atlas and it was so nice to see a different side to the general. Ryan Lee Dunlap as Riley at the end was so creepy but like in a really talented wow type of way!!

I can’t wait to see what happens next I have so many questions that need answering.

This series started out with a heart stopping bang and just kept going. I loved in this book two The General and Alex’s relationship really takes a turn. I thought it was interesting that the Rift and so much more about his world was developed and explained for a more in-depth understanding. This story didn’t just repeat what happened in the first book, it took it to another level.

I have to say that I was holding my breath to discover what the king's betrayal was and the way it was weaved into the story was brilliant and unexpected.

It was heartwarming, exciting story and promised great things for book three. Impatiently waiting for the next book in this series as it has me hooked.

Oh my God!

This woman delights in tearing gasps from our bodies. I can’t remember how many times I thought my heart stopped reading the Afterlife series. The Hellbeast series, indeed, all of her other stuff. So here we are, a little tension, some dicey goings on, a rescue, and oh yeah, we can’t forget the push pull between Atlas and Alex that takes us where? Eventually to finding out what Atlas is and why Alex and he have been drawn to each other.
I can’t wait to get my hands on this last book. With the way this one ended, Riley getting possessed(?) consumed(?) by whatever evilness it is and what he does to Alex and Aster? Again, gasps aplenty here.
Great writing you two!

Book 2 of The Rift Series continues with the story of Alexandra, The General (Atlas), and Riley. Let's not forget about all of the creatures too! This story held my interest throughout the world building, time line, and relationships. There's magic, more creatures, betrayal, fated mates, slow burn and action! Be prepared for another cliffhanger!!
Audio: Amanda Leigh Cobb. James Cassidy and Ryan Lee Dunlap continued to grow the characters. Their performance kept me engaged with all of the emotions ranging from anger, revenge, fear, uncertainty, friendship and romance.
I'm looking forward to book 3!!

It just fell flat! 2.75 Stars

I was so looking forward to reading this second book after the first one proved to be so good and the start of an amazing story. I don’t really understand why the author depicted the FMC Alex which had shown so much strength, resilience and fierceness into someone who suddenly became a damsel in distress, over dramatic and displaying childish behaviour. What happened? All that beautiful build up from the first book fell flat in this second one. I DNF reading this book, I just couldn’t. Very disappointing.

Ok, I liked it. That switch was pretty quick though and it took me a minute.
Book 3 isn't out yet but here's how we left it for my future self.
We had to send ol dude back through the rift so he could take down his evil brother and secure his land but once he is done, HE WILL BE BACK for her.
In the mean time, Riley got possessed by some sort of black goo and is on a bender of beating down Alex. She gets saved by the hulk minitour and X-men Storm to catch a vision of Atlas being betrayed.
She's got to hit that Jetstream stat through the rift or all will be lost.

Yesssss.. I love this series so far. Thank you BNA for allowing me to continue with this series via ALC. I really hope you will continue to share it with me as it releases but literally obsessed and cannot stop thinking about that cliffhanger!!

I absolutely love the mythical monster/apocalyptic/world-building in this series. Now that we know more about where the "General" is from and what is on the other side of the Rift, I cannot wait to see what happens in book 3. I didn't dislike the General in book 1 but I wasnt sure which way they would go with the love story. Maybe I have read too many whychoose lol. BUT our General's pretty irresistible now. I don't know if bestie boy can get his girl back from him lol. I think we really are gearing up for some heavy action-packed drama in this.
Their chemistry is also so good in TKB, and it's totally understandable why she can't fight it. Especially after their time alone while looking for answers. The number of times I fell in love over the only one horse scenes and his protectiveness.... feet kicks and swoony giggles united!

Narrations continue to be top-notch by all three of our cast members (Amanda Leigh Cobb, James Cassidy and Ryan Lee Dunlap). They are all perfectly cast for these characters, and I felt like I was more in the story than it being told to me, which was one minor issue I had with the first narration.)

Are you freaking kidding me!!?? This is becoming very quickly a new favorite series of mine if it keeps it up. The first book was great, immediately plugged you into the story and while I don't mind world building this just got right into it.
left you on a cliff...

This one again just jumped right back into the story and that's something I can get used to.

Absolutely unexpected! Whatever you thought you figured out about this plot or these characters in book 1, you will be caught off guard! The tension and the yearning and the plot twists make this book a great time. The narration is chef’s kiss. And the last 5 chapters!!! That was a cruel escalation and a criminal cliffhanger! And I absolutely loved it. This story is fast paced and exciting, you wont be able to put it down. Cant wait for book 3. This series will become mandatory listening in 2026! Well done !

I like the story mostly…

The general is psychologically abusive and it bothers me so much. He never tells Alex what’s truly happening even though he has many opportunities. He constantly refers to her as “little” even though she’s proven how strong and smart she is. He holds his knowledge over her and makes her feel unsure of herself. He doesn’t respect her and it drives me nuts.

This one took a bit to get going for me as it was not as quick paced and intense as the first book. The second half of the book definitely picked up and you finally started to get some answers. The switch up in relationships happened quickly and didn’t bother me. I do enjoy the generals and Alex’s banter. The narration on this was again phenomenal and made the story so much better in my opinion. Of course we left off on another cliff hanger and I am eager to find out what happens next!

I didn’t like this one as much as the first. I’m not sure why. The narrators were awesome though. I love James Cassidy. He has such range and puts so much into his characters . Ryan Lee Dunlap is still pretty new but he also drew me in. Amanda again had me on the edge of my seat. They were really great. I just don’t think this one was a hit for me. But others may love it. Kinda slow. Didn’t have the feel of the first one.

Goodness gracious! I'm having the best time with this series.
So many twits and tuns and just when you think you've figured everything out and everything is peaceful… BAM guess again!
The duet narration was awesome. At the end of the book, Ryan Lee Dunlap had the creepiest voice; it was wild.
Definitely recommend the audio!
