3.75 "be pissed at me tomorrow but love me tonight" STARS

This was my first Marquita Valentine novel and the prologue was just so riveting and heartbreaking that it sucked me right in. I immediately connected to Seth, Rowan and Jase and the story had my full attention.

This is a story about young love that's ripped to shreds by circumstance but also with the help of some foolish actions that can be blamed on youth and raw emotion.

It starts with an illegal street race for pinks that leads to a tragic outcome for both Seth and Jase.

Seth O'Connor is seventeen and idolizes Jase Simmons and worships Jase's younger sister Rowan, who is also Seth's girlfriend. Ms. Valentine readily captures the intense love and connection between Rowan and Seth.

My heart broke when this tragic event destroys Seth's dreams and ruins the hopes of three young lives. Seth ends up in prison for a crime he had nothing to do with and is then forced to join the marines.

Once faced with the harsh reality of jail, Seth pushes Rowan away. He can't help but blame her for his situation. Rowan is gutted, abandoned by all and at first, she doesn't give up. Seth does a bang up job of shutting her out so, after two years, Rowan finally moves on and ices her heart to Seth.

Both Seth and Rowan are strong, likable characters and both are determined and stubborn. This story had a lot of emotional layers with both the H/h doing stupid things to protect themselves and cope with their situation. Both of them are flawed and sure, some of their pain, anger and sadness could have been avoided however, they experienced a disastrous event that literally altered their lives and left deep wounds. I had my moments with both of them but also got why they did what they did.

 photo rowan tree_zpsn9qejq9y.jpg

Their second chance/journey back together had some hot and steamy moments, tender, painful and some cute moments too. Despite the past and the mistakes, it's apparent that these two love and belong together...even if it takes them both a while to find their way back.

This could have been easily 4 stars for me had it not been for the merry-go-round of Seth and Rowan patching things up. Just when you thought they were on the road to good things, we'd be back at Seth apologizing and trying to gain Rowan's trust again. I would recommend this book and I'm anxious to read the next book. I'm looking forward to bad-boy Jase getting down and dirty with uber good girl, Piper Ross. This promises to be an exciting ride!

3.75 First Love Stars

“Be pissed at me tomorrow. Love me tonight.”

I should start off by saying I wasn't expecting much more than a cute little love story when I started Take the Fall. I've read a few books by this author and while I've enjoyed them, I've been left feeling a little underwhelmed. Well, I most definitely got the cute story but I was pleasantly surprised by the emotional punch that came along for the ride.

Seth has been in love with Rowan since the fateful day in kindergarten when she gut punched him for not letting her take a turn first on the swings. As time progressed these two found themselves deeply in love, even amidst the personal tragedies both were experiencing. When a street racing win turns inexplicably wrong, Seth is forced to make a choice. What follows is seven years of bitter feelings and radio silence from Seth until the day he's forced to come home and face his biggest regret, Rowan, head on.

You’re my compass and all directions lead me straight to where I’m supposed to be. With you.

I had some major feels going on for both Rowan and Seth, I truly did. Rowan felt like Seth chose to leave her like everyone else in her life when he shut her out. Seth was understandably bitter about the road he was forced down and as a seventeen year old, he didn't always handle his issues in a reasonable manner. The fact I found myself relating to both characters made this an enjoyable read for me.

Now, to the frustrating part and why I knocked this down to a 3.75 rating. By the end of the story Rowan bugged the ever loving shit out of me with her "I'll f**k you at night but bring the bitch when we're not naked" attitude. Yes, she was angry and scared to trust Seth and I completely get that. But to have that anger last until worked my last good nerve. I get it, he gutted you emotionally as a seventeen year old but for the sake of the story, a little less angry bitch would've been appreciated. That being said, when Seth finally found a way to really break through, it was a beautiful thing.

Take the Fall is the first in a new series by Marquita Valentine and I have to say the second book, Piper and Jase's story, is already off to a promising start. While Seth and Rowan's struggles didn't always make sense to me, I still enjoyed the ride.

1 - "Sorry, I don't speak heartless bitch." Stars!

DNF @ 66%.

I really tried with this one, there were moments when I thought I would be able to power through, but you know that enough is enough when you actually start wishing a fictional character drops dead from an unknown disease in the next paragraph, because you cannot find one redeeming characteristic about them.

The reason I stuck with is is because Marquita Valentine can put a pretty good story together, and her writing is easy to immerse yourself in, but unfortunately her choice of characterization for Rowan Simmons in Take the Fall, left an awful lot to be desired for me.

So in a nutshell here's the skinny. Rowan as a teenager is in love with Seth, together with her brother they attend and drive in an illegal drag race with her brother. Seth wins the race, and Jase gets into a fight with the losing driver. Things go south, pretty fast, and Jase and Seth end up doing time, even though the responsibility is wholly Jase's. Seth cuts Rowan off whilst he is in the slammer, and when he get's out goes straight into the Marines. Seven years later he is back in town to make amends...

All sounds promising right?

Jase, pretty much summed up my thoughts in one paragraph, to be honest -

"You can hold a grudge against a man who went to jail for us when he could have put everything on me... It's been seven years, sis. Let it go."

It was this refusal, to move on, and the fact she was happy to hop in the sack with him at every available opportunity, while still treating him like a piece of crap in front of everyone the rest of the time, that finally killed it for me. The guy had virtually handed him his nuts on a platter @ 66%, and she still kept on with it. I kept reading because I was hoping at some point the would be a turn, and I am guessing the will be in the latter stages of the book, but for me, it was a case of enough is enough.

I loved Seth, I just wish he had a better woman to come home too, to be honest. I think it's definitely a characterization thing for me, over the writing, and even though Take the Fall was a bust for me on this occasion, I would happily give another book by this author a go.

"You're my compass... I'll always follow you back home."

What happens when’s loves compass breaks? This is a touching, angsty, sexy, sweet story about a forgiveness and second chances.
"You're my compass and all directions lead me straight to where I'm supposed to be. With you. Love you forever."

Seth O’Connor was seventeen when love, luck and circumstance derailed his plans and put him in jail and then sentenced him to serve in the marines for a crime he didn’t commit. Full of hatred and anger for his a and unfairly blaming Rowan, Seth turns his back and stayed away from the girl who’s owned his heart since he was five years old.

Seven years later, war and death have given him perspective. He’s realized that not everyone gets second chances. Determination to get his girl back sets in and going back to his home town to attend his grandmother’s funeral is the catalyst to set his plan in motion. Can he convince Rowan to forgive him for denying her and give them another chance?

At sixteen, Rowan Simmons thought she would love and be with Seth forever. Not even a jail sentence or serving as a marine could break them apart. The last thing she expected was for Seth to shatter her heart. But she’s not a girl anymore, she strong and independent and has built an impenetrable ice fortress around her heart. Not even the gorgeous man Seth has become could get through or can he?

From the very beginning, the prologue ensured I was fully invested in Seth and Rowan’s emotional story. It broke my heart how three young lives were forever unbearably altered. And from that moment on I anxiously flipped pages to know how two people that belonged together found their way back.

I really loved Seth’s persistence and that even though he lived through horrific times both in jail and while serving his country, he came back determined atone for lost time and his awful behavior towards Rowan. Failure is not an option and he’s resolved to live life at its fullest with the only person who meant for him. Even if his plan involved lots of sexy times and not a lot of laying it all out.

I admired Rowan for picking up the pieces of her heart and life after both her brother and Seth got sent to jail. I liked that she wasn’t just independent, but also tough and smart. But that strong will sometimes crossed over to extreme stubbornness with a touch of lack of communication.
“I don’t know what you want from me.”
“Baby, I want what you can give me.”
“What if I can’t give you anything?”
“You’ll give me everything… Because you know I’m what you need.”

Seth and Rowan’s road to their happy ever after was long with a lot of bumps and bruises and sometimes felt like an endless maze of back and forth between the two. But there were also a lot of deliciously sexy times, interweaved with sweet tender moments, and some flat out swoon worthy ones.
This is my first Marquita book. I enjoyed her writing style and loved that it has a fast pace which was easy to read.

Take the Fall is the first book in the Take the Fall series by Marquita Valentine. It is a standalone, full-length, contemporary romance filled with angsty, sexy times and swoon worthy moments. Told from both points of view, with a happy ending.

At 17 years old, Seth went to jail. He took part of the blame for something he didn't do so that he could protect his girlfriend Rowan. After he got to prison, reality set in and he pushed Rowan away and blamed her for his being in prison. He told her not to visit but she continued to write him letters that he never responded to. After being released from jail, Seth enlists in the Marines and disappears permanently from Rowans life. Being left isn't new to Rowan, her father, her mother, her brother and Seth have all left her. Fast forward 7 years and Seth comes back to town after his grandma dies and he plans to make things right with Rowan. Rowan doesn't ever want to be hurt again and she won't let Seth get close to her but she can't fight the attraction she still has to him.

I enjoyed this story for the most part. Seth made some bad decisions but he was only 17, still a kid. I like that he was willing to put in the work to seek forgiveness. Rowan was tough, she had a hard personality and at times she was really frustrating. I didn't really love either of these characters but I liked them enough to root for a HEA for them. I am looking forward to the other books in this series.

4 "You're my compass...I'll always follow you back home" stars!

I loved this book! This was 1st by this author but definitely not my last.
This was a book about love, sacrifice, anger, forgiveness and redemption.
This is Seth and Rowan's journey after tragedy rips them apart and anger keeps them away. 7 years later Seth wants to prove to Rowan he is a changed man and that he has always loved her. She tries to push him away, she is stubborn and feisty but Seth knows (as well as Rowan) that they belong together.
Their journey is beautiful, I loved that she gave him hell....she did not just forgive and forget. I loved that Seth did not let her deter him, he fought for their life, love and forever.

It was good, but Rowan made me mad. I just wanted to smack her upside her head. How many times did he have to apologize? Seth was 17 when it happened. Seventeen year old boys are known for being not smart and making stupid mistakes. Didn't she learn that from her older brother. The letters Seth wrote her were beautiful. I look forward to the next book with her BFF and brother. Maybe he won't be as stupid as his sister...

Take the Fall2

Seth and Rowan had been in love forever, they started dating when they were 16, with the blessings from Seth’s best friend and Rowan’s brother, Jase. However, their love story suddenly took a curve when Seth and Jase entered a drag race that went wrong. Soon, Seth found himself in prison and Rowan was all alone with her best friend Piper and Seth’s grandmother. Perhaps it was the harsh reality of prison and his future was bleak that made him pushed Rowan away, and break her heart in the process. He will be released, but was mandated to join the Marines as part of his punishment.

Seven years later, he was back. He finally realized how wrong he was for pushing the only girl he loved away, and he was willing to do anything and everything to win her back. But Rowan has something else in mind. The pain he caused her heart to harden and she already built some walls to protect her heart from breaking again. She had enough of people leaving her and she was determined not to fall in love with the boy who broke her heart.

Seth may have hurt Rowan in pushing her away, but Rowan should also understand Seth was in a difficult situation. Nevertheless, both of them were young when they were faced with the circumstances, and it was understandable that perhaps most of their choices were brought about by emotions they were feeling at that time.

I always loved second chance romance, and Take The Fall was not an exception. The characters are easily likable, although there are times you’d begged you have enough patience of their antics and just cut the chase. Would they have their second chance, or would they let the pain from their past take it away?

Nevertheless, his letter at the end took my breath away. It was enough to make me swoon. I was just crossing my fingers it was enough to make Rowan realize that he was in for the long haul.

Take the Fall in an excellent book to start this new series by Marquita Valentine. It’s the perfect combination of romance, emotions, and steam that will have you hooked in no time. I can’t wait for Jase and Piper’s story!

Seth O'Connor took the ultimate fall for Rowan Simmons. After a drag racing night gone wrong Seth takes the blame to keep the heat off the girl he loves, but when he realises the consequences of his decision, he shuts down, then shuts out Rowan and is left to face his jail time alone.

One night can change everything.

One bad decision can ruin lives.

Can love right all wrongs.

Years later the death of Seth's Grandmother brings him home. This is the first time Seth and Rowan have crossed paths since that faithful night, neither one is prepared for the roller coaster of emotions ahead of them.

This is my first book from Marquita Valentine and for the most part I enjoyed it. There were a few moments along the way that I could of slapped Rowan for her immature behaviour or given her a serious talking to, because come on, how many times should a person say they are sorry before it's accepted and life can go on. Seth was such a sweetie alpha and once his mind was made up he was prepared to fight to win back the girl he never stopped thinking about.

I'm looking forward to hearing more from these two in Jase's book.

Take the Fall is the first book in a new series, this can also be read as a stand alone.

Autry's review posted at Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

Take the Fall is a beautifully crafted coming-of-age story, each character starting off on the wrong side of the tracks in their teenage years. Which lead them to a hard start into adult life and finally making their way back into society and each others everyday lives. Rowan, Seth and Jase were all each other had until a split second decision rips them apart.

Seth has idolizes Jase for many reasons…. he’s older, drives a tricked out car, and never has a shortage of girls hanging on him. Younger and more impressionable Seth takes the fall to protect his best friend and brother of the girl he loves. Prison and the Marines have a way of hardening the soul. Seth knows he’s changed, but he is very aware of his remaining weak spot, Rowan.

Rowan was forced to grow up, quickly as her only guardians went off to prison to protect her. To ease the burden on Seth’s family she moves in to help out, and now her life is up in the air again. Tough and sexy Rowan’s heart wants to pull Seth closer but her head is throwing up red flags. Can she trust Seth to stay around and take care of heart or will he shut her down and leave her broken, again.

Seth and Rowan are without a doubt, the half that makes each other whole. From the first spark in teenage youth to the flames burning bright in later years, it was clear how much these two were meant to be. Their bodies very well known to each other through years of intimacy, only made it hard for their brains to find plausible reasons to avoid each other. I was able to sympathize with Rowan, to work so hard to pick up pieces left of your life and hold your head high, fighting back to establish a good name, creating a foundation to help others re-enter society. Anyone who agrees to take the fall for someone they love is trying to be noble but the feelings of guilty, anger, denial and hatred that build up are inevitable. The journey they traveled as a couple was strengthened by sheer determination and love; learning to trust one another and rebuild their bond was tougher than prison or the Marines.

I enjoyed every minute I spent lost in Take the Fall, the characters are well developed with a plot that continuously kept the pages turning. At times I felt like the characters were a bit selfish but never predictable; the secondary characters added color to the novel. Ms. Valentine has a great lead into the second installment of the series; the couple is introduced to us in Take the Fall, and I can’t wait to see how she makes Jase fall for his girl. Overall this was a quality start to a new series full of fun, hard-working men and women just waiting to take the fall!

You’re my compass and all directions lead me straight to where I’m supposed to be. With you.

Okay, First off, I would like to greet everyone a Merry Christmas! I hope you guys had a great time. And now, I will post a review about Take the Fall. It was my 1st read by Marquita Valentine and my 1st book for the month of December, too and I must say that I really love this cute romance story.

Seth and Rowan were in love with each other since kindergarten, it might sound impossible but I think they have this connection already even though they’re too young and as time passes by, they fell in love with each other. Their story was perfect until a fateful event happened when Seth went to jail for a crime that he didn’t commit. He was sentenced to stay in prison for seven months and the only way out of it is to join the Marines. Seth pushed everyone away and that includes Rowan and she swore that no man can hurt her again. After seven years of serving his country, Seth went back after his grandmother’s death. And that was how the story progressed. I want to tell more but I am afraid to spoil you guys or I am afraid that I am not making sense anymore. Haha!

I love how Marquita Valentine wrote this, the flow of the story and the character development of Seth and Rowan. I love how Rowan handled her relationship with Seth especially when he went to prison, she never gave up on them not until she had enough. I definitely understand Rowan and I won’t say anything against her for giving up because she’s in a difficult situation, too. She’s carrying the guilt, the pain and the empty feeling of missing someone. I want to slap Seth on the other hand. I really want to kick him in the butt for pushing Rowan away.

So there, the characters in this story aren’t difficult to love. I kinda fell in love with Jase and Seth on the 1st part of the story to the point that the prologue broke my heart. I love the flow of the story. Each character has their flaws especially when it comes to decision making. They tend to make selfish decisions in life and their choices affect them and the people around their circle.

“Be pissed at me tomorrow. Love me tonight.”

And I cried, swooned while reading those letters… Yes, definitely, the letters. I loved it.

This book ripped me from my disappointing reading slump and gave me the happy shivers! Ah, Marquita Valentine, I am quite grateful to you, madam! My rating for Take the Fall stands at 4.5 be pissed at me tomorrow but love me tonight stars! The beginning was so bittersweet it gave me chest pains and the book sank its talons into me to ensure I read it in one sitting!

Where do I start with what I liked? I suppose I shall start with the hero as I tend to do because those are the ones you're made to fall in love with. Seth O'Connor starts the story as a young, hot, and adoring 17 year old boy who has it bad for the guy he idolizes sister. His decision to try and protect her lands him in jail for just under a year but the time there hardens him. After his sentence is served, Seth joins the Marines and tries to figure out what to do about his love for Rowan after messing up. I really liked Seth because he was created to be so human with his flaws and it was plain to see just how much he genuinely loved the heroine.

We meet our heroine when she's young and high on life and desperately in love with Seth. Rowan visits Seth in jail to have him tell her to never return and completely rip her heart out. After seven years he comes back and her traitorous heart and body haven't let him go even when her mind tells her he will only leave and destroy her all over again. Even as she gives in to his kiss, his touch, and the passion that is unique to them, Rowan keeps herself closed off from Seth.

The story really drags you into its world and gives you a lot of emotions. Your heart breaks for the pain both Rowan and Seth feel as you are able to read both of their inner feelings throughout the novel. You like and respect Rowan and Seth equally which shows the author really put her time into developing both the hero and heroine. I have to say I was happily surprised by Marquita Valentine's talent and ever so grateful to have read this story.

Take the Fall started out really well, it grabbed, surprised and opened the door for a second-chance love story with some depth. Everything I want to find when I pick up a book from an author unfamiliar to me.

"I'm living my life. I've been making a life without him."

The storyline had potential; childhood sweethearts, Seth serves time for a crime he didn't commit, joins the marines and leaves his beloved, broken hearted. And not only does Rowan's boyfriend end up inside, but so does her older brother. Fast forward several years when he returns following his grandmother's death, and one would expect her to be hurt and less forgiving considering he shut her out. If I'm blunt though, Rowan irritated; she came across as bolshy, unthinking and harsh and not just with Seth but her BFF, Piper. And this affected my enjoyment of the book because I never really became invested in them as a couple. Their reignited feelings were a bit of a merry-go-round.

"You're my compass, Rowan. I'll always follow you back home."

It was moments like this that did bring some emotion, and heading towards the end there were some lovely moments, but by this point my feelings on Rowan had pretty much killed any enjoyment for me. That's how much I disliked her. However, whilst I've rated this low, it's not based on Marquita Valentine's writing style; I liked the dual POV and generally it flowed well, so chances are I would read the next book in the series as I very much like the premise of the ex-jailbird and the good-girl. To be honest I did actually like Piper and Jase more than Rowan and Seth.

Predictable and I thought the characters were pretty predictable also.

Love Seth but Rowen was a royal pain on the ass and became THAT annoying character.

Full of angst but of course its young adult!

I sometimes say I picked up a new author. What I really mean is to me they are new although they've written previous books to the one I'm reading. But new to me because it's the first time I read something from them.

Browsing through NG I came across this cover. Looked pretty enough and after reading the synopsis I said sure. Will it kill me? I was hoping not. I'm misjudged. I do like the sappy romantic stories. Just not all the time. The heroines get to me with all that whining and crying. Talk about wanting to punch someone in the face.

"No one ever stays."

These words right there, I knew I was in for some sadness and a whole lot of issues. There are some, not enough to drive me bat shit crazy, enough to annoy me just a little. This is your typical young romance. No they are not teenagers throughout the whole book. They were in love at a young age but of course a tragedy separated them and being so young dumb choices were made out of anger.

She waited and waited for me to say something until I drove her to the point of no return.

I felt like what happened needed more of an explanation in order for me to accept Seth and Rowan's actions. Although her brother was also involved I'll save him for later because he's getting his own book. He played his part like the big brother he is. So back to Rowan and Seth this book is angsty. He loved me, hates me, left me behind and vice versa. I had some trouble with Rowan because she couldn't make up her mind after Seth comes back. Oh and I was furious with Seth while he was away. He blamed Rowan and her brother for what happens to him and I thought it was a dick move. He makes up for it. I promise.

"I'll keep pumping that sweet pussy while you concentrate on coming. Can you do that for me?"

Yes there are some really hot sexy times scenes. Seth is no longer a boy, but a man still in love with the woman he left behind and is coming for her. No holds barred. He wants Rowan and he's going to get her. And this is more angst because Rowan now can't forgive him. She plays the You left me and I don't need you cards. Don't get me wrong their banter is very funny at times. She's a little spitfire. Let's give thanks to big brother Jase for making his sister a Bad Ass, but I will say I wanted to kill her. Rowan shut up and listen to him. Let him explain himself and stop with your no one stays BS.

"I don't know what you want from me," I finally say. He leans back, his dark eyes searching my face. There's so much tenderness there that I have to look away. "Baby, I want what you can give me." "What if I can't give you anything?" "You'll give me everything," he whispers. "Because you know I'm what you need."

Does is have an HEA? Yes. I felt like I needed more of that ending though. It actually can be read as a standalone but I'm going to harass the author because I want more from these two. Seth had plans and I want to live those plans out in another book. Hhmmm, maybe she's saving it for the next book. Jase's. I have a feeling if things go good that will be one kick ass book. More angst, yee-hawwww. Can't wait to read about his douchery acts. Yup, I totally made that word up. Piper, I'm cheering for you. Don't go easy. Get out your shell and raise some hell woman. Learn something from your BFF.

Yes I recommend this book. Seth is a delicious book BF. Rowan is not a bad heroine when she's not mixed up all in her head. Looking forward to the next book. Happy Readings!!

I received this ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

At first, I had a hard time with Seth. I understand that an undeserved prison sentence would change anyone, especially a teenage boy, but his misplaced anger in Rowan was frustrating.

We never really get into Seth's headspace as to why he "hated" her so much after the main incident went down. It was such a vague, mostly unformed accusation from someone that loved her to the point of obsession.

“You thought I betrayed you, didn’t you?” I ask. “When you went to jail and then into the Marines, you blamed me. And Jase.”

He nods slowly. “I blamed you most of all.”

When he returns, he expects her to simply fall into his arms after leaving her hanging for years. After she took care of his grandmother for years. And worst of all, Rowan barely made him work for it. He storms into the business she helped make a success, threatened her livelihood and then as soon as he made a play for her, she folded. This is a weakness I despise. I need selfish heroes to suffer and grovel.

“Because I’ve seen death and war and violence. I’ve held dying men, and all I could think of was you. You’re what got me through.” He shakes his head. “Not just you, but apologizing to you. I made a vow that if I came back from my last deployment, then I would make it up to you.”

“Did you ever think I might not want your apology?”

I cheered at this segment, but ultimately the apologies from Seth and the tough bravado from Rowan read as hollow.

As for technical issues, there were little nagging inconsistencies, such as the lawyer who disclosed Rowan's personal information to Seth without batting an eyelash. Also editing problems with commas and missing articles.

The chemistry between Seth and Rowan was nicely done. There really is something so compelling about the enemies to lovers trope.

The side characters of Piper and Jase were two of my favorite things about the book, and I'm excited to read their story. Other side characters such as Giselle and Tony came off as a cartoonish, paper doll villains. They could have used some development.

Overall, an entertaining story, but I didn't feel overly connected to the characters, and the plot was a little weak.

They were in love and had their future ahead of them. Rowan Simmons knew Seth O'Connor was going to be her happily ever after, that is until he is sent to prison for a crime he didn't commit. Seth blames everyone, especially Rowan. He pushes her away, gets released and joins the Marines. Now he is back for a funeral and after sorting his life and finding his calling he knows one mistake he needs to rectify, win Rowan back. Rowan however is not ready to forgive and forget, he crushed her and she is not sure she can ever trust again.

My Review:
Three lives ruined just because they were at the wrong place at the wrong time. That's what happened to Jase, Seth, and Rowan. Yes, they should not have been doing the illegal street racing, but none of them deserved what happened. Jase and Seth sent to prison for attempted murder, Rowan left alone. It left all three of them with heartbreaking scars.

But now Seth is home after a required seven year stint in the Marines. War taught him what was really important...the girl who gave him everything including her unwavering love that he left at home. But Rowan is seven years past giving Seth a second chance. No more. He won't have the chance to break her heart again.

This book is heartbreaking....just because none of these kids deserved what happened to them. They did a stupid thing, but they sure never planned to hurt anyone. (As a mother, this is the kind of story that terrifies me...tiny choices can have such HUGE repercussions that hurt for the rest of your life.)

For Rowan, she'd always had a hard edge, but that's become even worse in the last 9 years. She's hardened her heart and although she would have done anything to have Seth come back to her at one point in time, it's too late now. She can't forgive him or open her heart to him again. I loved how strong she is. She's gone through an awful time, but for those that have earned it, she maintains her complete loyalty. She would have done anything for Seth's grandmother, her mechanics, and her bff, Piper. But Seth is not among that list anymore.

But the emotions and chemistry they had doesn't just disappear, no matter Rowan wishes that were so. And Seth is not going to be put off. He wants her heart back and fully plans to get it.

Seth had his own issues after prison and then the forced Marines. He didn't have any choices about leaving Rowan, and he was so angry and young, so he pushed her away and forced her out of his life. But now he's a full adult with the perspective that gives him and knows that he made a huge mistake.

No one really dealt with what all happened to them that night. They were all forced to Take the Fall...and that anger about the unfairness of that has to go somewhere. Unfortunately for these two, they directed it at one another. Watching them learn how to forgive and forget is what is at the heart of this novel. There is a huge character development arc for both Rowan and Seth...and it turned out beautiful.

Now I'm ready for Jase's story, but I have a feeling he's going to be a harder nut to crack because he and Piper are very different people who have come from such different circumstances. Already in this book, it was painful to watch them together. Lots of angst to come...

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

“You’re my compass, Rowan. I’ll always follow you back home.”

Take The Fall is a fantastic second chance romance. It follows the story of Rowan and Seth. Rowan and Seth had a love like no other. They couldn’t get enough of each other until one day, their worlds got turned upside down. Everything changed when Seth goes to jail for a crime he didn’t commit. He did it to protect the woman he loved, but had no idea how much it would change him. Pushing Rowan away seemed like the smartest decision at the time. When Seth gets out, he finds himself enlisted in the Marines. Not a single day went by that Seth didn’t think about Rowan. However, Seth had a lot of issues to work out. It isn’t until Seth’s grandma passes away, that he returns home….Rowan has worked hard to create something good out of her life. After Seth left her heartbroken, she vowed that she would never let someone hurt her again. All was going to plan, until Seth returns home. Feelings that were once forgotten, have suddenly come to surface. Will Rowan be able to fight the pull she feels towards Seth? Has too much time passed for these two to get their second chance? Will Rowan ever be able to forgive Seth?

Take The Fall pulled me in from the very first page. I couldn’t wait to read more. My heart ached for Seth and Rowan as they tried to navigate through their lives. Seth had so much anger and resentment towards Rowan. I couldn’t wait for the moment for Seth to realize that his feelings were misguided. And when he did come to his senses, it was game on. Seth would stop at nothing to win Rowan back. I just adored Rowan. She was so easy to relate to and such a strong and stubborn woman. She worked hard at making a life for herself after Seth broke her heart. And when Seth comes back into town and tries to win her back, she sure didn’t make it easy for him. I loved watching Seth and Rowan together. They had so many issues and insecurities to overcome. Their chemistry just oozed off the pages. I loved their push and pull, even if it did frustrate me at times.

Take The Fall is the exciting first book in the Take The Fall series. I think this series is off to a fantastic start. I know I am hooked. I loved everything about this book: from the characters, to the plot, to the angst and romance. I couldn’t put it down put it down. Take The Fall is my first book by this author and I am really excited to read more from her in the future.

*ARC GIVEN BY NETGALLY VIA THE AUTHOR FOR REVIEW*

This is the first book of the ‘Take the Fall’ series. It features the couple Seth and Rowan; each novel can be read as a standalone.

Brief Synopsis
As a teenager, Seth O’Connor went to jail for a crime he had nothing to do with. He took the fall to protect the girl he loved, but the cruel realities of prison hardened him. After doing his time, Seth shuts her out and enlists in the Marines—until his grandmother’s funeral forces him to come home and face Rowan Simmons once again.

My Thoughts
With more development this could have been a real knock out of a book. It had the recipe for being a delicious book, there was a second chance love story, angst , a little drama and more importantly love between the two characters. It just was not developed properly. My first issue is with the heroine ,Rowan , she makes everything so difficult I can understand her being hurt and scared but come on when will she give the guy a chance. She was just trying to be this hard ass that was such so unlikable. The hero, Seth made a mistake has a kid and I can understand his resentment but at the same time his feelings were not given enough explanation to make me really feel his anger .I do feel not enough backstory was given to his times in jail and also about what happened after the fatal incident, it was just glossed over which sucked majorly. It was really upsetting because it could have given the story more juice and made it even meatier, dramatic to read. So much of his story , even with him in the marines was cut out and bare glimpses were given for some his friends. It just seemed to all happened too fast and too soon. I wanted to really feel this story but instead I was told and given bare glimpses of important events which left me feeling very frustrated.
Once again I stress that I do feel that with better character development and plot work this would have been a sure 5 stars but unfortunately I did not get that from this one.

2 stars
P.S. Because I am still interested in Jace’s story I am looking forward to that one. I really hoped it knocks my socks off.

This is my first Marquita Valentine book and I really enjoyed this story.
Seth and Rowan were teenagers who doted on each other. So much so that Seth would protect Rowan and someone she loves by going to prison for a crime he did not commit.
Once his sentence was up, he had to enlist in the marines upon release. He is angry at Rowan and her older brother Jase, and blames them for all that has happened!
Seven years later, Seth is forced back to his hometown after the loss of his Grandmother, this is where he has to face Rowan again after so much time has passed. He is aware of his mistakes and his placement of blame on the wrong people and now, he wants to fight to win Rowan back!!! She is the only girl for him, always has been, always will be.
In the time Seth has been away, Rowan has grown and will not be put down by anyone. Because so many people have let her down and walked out of her life, so she does not trust easily! Therefore she does NOT let Seth back in as easy as he would like! Making him fight for her!
Piper, Rowan's best friend has been her rock and I am BUZZING for her story!
Seth and Rowan have this connection. Nothing can prevent it, not even seven years of distance!
This story is heartfelt, full of gut wrenching moments, loss, the forever kind of love and characters redeeming themselves! I could not put this book down and enjoyed everything about it! I read for feels, and Marquita Valentine has written a beautiful novel that brings the feels I crave as a reader. The message behind the book is something special. Love is forever! When you meet that someone, NOTHING can change that, no obstacles, no time, nothing!
I cannot wait to read more from this extremely talented author, and I am absolutely dying to get my hands on Piper and Jase's story! I just KNOW, it is going to Rock my World!!!!

4.5 stars!!

Talk about grudges…before I go any further, I may not be able to write this without spoiling it a little, but I’ll try…

Seth went to jail for a crime he didn’t do. Basically because he thought he was protecting Rowan. So what does he do while in jail? Pushes her away so that she hates him, creating a new life for herself.

Rowan not only loses her teenage boyfriend Seth to jail, but her brother as well. Yes, for the same crime. While Seth is busy pushing Rowan away, she’s been a little busy taking care of his grandmother and starting a business.

Fast-forward seven years from the crime. The death of Seth’s grandmother brings them back together. One of the questions I have from reading this is, although he says he was returning anyway, would Seth really have gone home to get back together with Rowan if his grandmother hadn’t passed? I guess, but it seems like the only thing they actually have in common is great sex. Not to say there’s anything wrong with that, but they fight, they have sex. They go a week without speaking to each other, and the first thing they do is have sex, still without really “talking” about themselves. It was a little bit of a turn off in relation to the story, but the sex was good.

I will say this though…although I may have lost interest in “this” story, I’m looking forward to reading about Jase and Piper. Which I’m assuming is next.

Review:
Woah, what a ride!!! This book was just perfect for someone like me, with the angst and ill feelings and love despite or disguised as hate. Not to mention just how damn sexy the whole thing was. Now, I cannot wait for When We Fall, the next book in this series to be released, because Marquita Valentine more than whetted my appetite for Piper and Jase's story!!!
Though the circumstances are a little hard for me to imagine, the whole story was painted and plotted out perfectly. It was brilliantly written and I felt myself go through the maelstrom of emotions that the characters felt. It was a thoroughly compelling read and if I had've been able to manage it, I probably would've stayed up all night last night just to read it, it was that good, and I was that invested in the characters getting their happily ever after!!!

Seth he's hot, sexy, and I loved him, "whatever.” Rowan looks away. “Everyone deserves a second chance, or at least a chance to prove that they’ve changed.” Does she want to give me another chance? I’ve changed, and she needs to see it. I need her to see it. Hell, I just need her." You do not threaten Seth with other men the boy gets territorial, "the look in his eyes makes me want to snatch my words back. “I am the only guy you can eff anywhere. You’re mine, damn it, and that’s final. I’m coming back. And, fair warning, when I get back, I’m going to take you to bed and make love to you." Sometimes Rowan's words speeds her man into action, "the next time you give me an orgasm, I want your c*** inside of me.” His eyes flare hot. He tears off his clothes, getting between my thighs and grabbing a condom." I loved this book and I can't wait for Jase and Piper's story.

Seth has always loved Rowan and would do anything to protect her. When he was a late teenager/young adult he got involved in street racing with Rowans brother Jase. Things turned ugly and both Seth and Jase were arrested having to serve time. Rowan never stopped loving Seth only he was so angry and ended up pushing her away and out of his life. Only after jail he has to join the Marines. While on tour he realizes that he’s never stopped loving Rowan and will do anything to get her back. When he’s called back home and put into Rowans path he’s determined to make things right only Rowans not so convinced he will stick around. Definitely a good book and fast read I didn’t want it to end!!

Loved it!! Classic Marquita Valentine with a touching love story at the core, surrounded by sizzling hot sexy times! Rowan and Seth's story got me emotionally right from the start. The heartbreak, pain and anger felt by both of these characters jumps from the pages. When Seth finally realizes all that he's lost, he knows it won't be an easy road but it is the only path he can travel. This story is perfectly written and one you don't want to miss. I highly recommend it!

The plot really got me hooked. I couldn't put it down. I love how the relationship had to be rebuilt and that Seth was willing to do that for Rowan. There was a lot of growth and it was well developed throughout the story. I am anxiously awaiting Piper's story though Jase made me wanna slap him a few times as a secondary character in this story. Definitely a great one to pick up.

#1 in the Take the Fall series

I'd rate this 2.5 stars if I could, but I'm rounding it down primarily because of the heroine. Rowan has been holding on to resentment for years. Her brother and her boyfriend got involved in a scuffle after a car race (as teenagers), that ends up getting the instigator injured, and of course the "troublemakers" go to jail. I agree that it was weird that Seth decided to blame himself, even though he had nothing to do with it. Since his sentence included several months in jail, then the requirement to join the Marines, he left for years. And Rowan resents the heck out of him "leaving her." I didn't really see how he had much choice, although he did push her away in order to get her to move on with her life. Now that Seth is back, he's trying to get back with her, but she's resisting because she "can't trust him not to leave her again." And Seth, weirdly, loves that she argues with him constantly since that means she's a challenge and worth the effort. Really? Because she just seems like a bitch to me. I spent the whole book rolling my eyes and wanting to punch Rowan. The only bright light was Piper, her best friend. If I had read this book first, I never would have continued with the series. But since I read Piper's story first and really liked it, I will give this series another try.
