Strictly limited to 1,000 copies, Visions of War is a lavish, full-colour hardback book presented in a premium quality slipcase. With 128 pages of art, including close-crops of key scenes and characters, and huge gatefolds, Visions of War shows off the art of Space Marine Battles like never before. What’s more, extracts and quotes pulled from the books sit alongside to provide an atmospheric read.
"Heloth" is a Scythes of the Emperor story from L J Goulding that tells the tale of the dramatic final battle of the Chapter's Second Company.
Additionally, the White Scars tale "The Thrill of the Hunt" from Anthony Reynolds follows the sons of Chogoris as they unleash their blistering fury against the alien eldar.
Visions of War brings together images from the covers of many Space Marine Battles titles, as well as a selection of the best internal illustrations. It showcases even more of the panoramic spreads normally hidden away beneath text, under spines or even behind printed flaps. Resplendent in full colour and with multi-page gatefolds, Visions of War is a lavish artefact that celebrates some of the best Warhammer 40,000 art ever commissioned.
L. J. Goulding is a British novelist, scriptwriter and editor, living and working in Los Angeles, California. His credits include 'League of Legends: Realms of Runeterra', the Black Library audio dramas 'Malcador: First Lord of the Imperium', 'The Heart of the Pharos', 'Scythes of the Emperor: Daedalus', and 'Mortarion's Heart', the novel 'Slaughter at Giant's Coffin', and many short stories for publishers in the UK and US.
Presented in this beautiful artbook are most (if not all, up until it was published) of the covers from the books, novellas, audiodramas and e-short stories from the Space Marine Battles series. All the artists represent an era of digital illustration that most of the times applied photographic manipulation (compositing models/actors in the figures) and many digital effects (dirt, scratches, lens flares, etc) to tell a story. This hyperstylisation may not sit well with many readers nowadays and might not have aged well, too. I personally love it. Clint Langley is one of my favorite storytellers (his Slaine books are amongst my favorite from that saga) and Jon Sullivan really defines this W40k series with his work (I think he drew the most of these covers). I won't mention the other artists in this volume. All contributed stunning work. The sparse passages from the SMB books compliment the illustrations and there are also two short stories at the end of the book.
Black Library’s series of Space Marine Battles books started in 2010 with Steve Parker’s Rynn’s World, and since then has expanded to contain well over a dozen novels and more than twenty assorted novellas, short stories and audio dramas. 2014 saw two notable additions to the series, in the shape of Andy Smillie’s Sons of Wrath (initially released as a First Edition), and the art book Visions of War (also initially a First Edition). A beautifully-presented hardback filled with a range of artwork from the series so far, it showcases the incredible work of artists such as Jon Sullivan, Kai Lim and Clint Langley (amongst others), and includes short stories from LJ Goulding and Anthony Reynolds.
