A Dark Erotic Romance

People wear masks. I cut them off.

She doesn't know it, but she's already mine.
They all are.
They cry. They scream. They beg for their lives.
Truth of it is, they're all wearing masks. Even me.

I'm just the only one who's not afraid to look at what lies underneath.
***
My hands are tied behind my back. Even if I could get loose, I'm locked inside the plastic surgeon's library.
He's in the next room.
Killing someone.

And if I said I wanted him to let me go, I'd be lying.

Author's Note : This is a dark romance novel with mature themes that might make some readers uncomfortable.

I was SO excited for this book to be released! I LOVED His, so of course, I was so psyched to read another book by Aubrey Dark! This book was definitely labeled a "dark erotica" novel for good reason, and I have to say, I really enjoyed it!

The one thing I really loved the most about this book were the complex characters Sara and Rien .

description

Sarah...the book starts off and we meet Sara- a struggling method actress who is down on her luck in terms of jobs and is lost in the city of fame and excess. When her agent calls and tells her she has finally landed a gig, she is ecstatic. Her job was simple enough- play the wife of a wealthy business man so that he can keep up appearances and escort him to a doctors appointment. A day of acting for $1,000! What more can a girl ask for?! Finally putting her 'method acting' to good use, Sara puts her everything into this character. Even convincing the plastic surgeon himself that she is this mans wife. The seemingly easy job quickly turns into a nightmare when she realizes the mess she has found herself in thanks to the business mans shady "business" dealings.

Insert Rien, an assassin disguised as a plastic surgeon who "cleans up" the bad in the world. He is a VERY complex character. A killer who wants nothing more than to be understood. His calm persona hides his true feelings: loneliness, pain and, of course, the need to cause other people pain. Slow, tortuous, pain. These scenes are VERY descriptive and certainly not for the faint of heart. He is immediatly drawn to Sara- this mysterious woman who has escorted her "husband" to his office. What happens when he figures out who she really is? What happens when Sarah figures out who Rian really is? In a city full of fake people, will these two be able to tell who is being real and who is doing nothing more than faking? YOU WILL HAVE TO READ AND FIND OUT!

I really think I liked this one a bit more than the first story. This was a little less psycho and more Stockholm-ish, with a nice side of forced seduction. Good stuff if your are in the mood for this kind story.

This story was dark as expected, but much of it felt like reading a medical journal. So much happened in two days it was hard to grasp.

I think I expected more 'depth' to the plot after being swept away by the first book I read by this author.

I'm not saying the story was terrible, it just fell short for me.

I enjoyed this one alittle more then book 1. It was more fast pace and alittle more better for me.

Now shes being held hostag by Rien the guy who gets answers for his employer. But he can't hurt a innocent even if he does touch and drug her.. Rien isn't that mean or torture her like he does the others.. he wants to keep her safe and his.. but can they trust eaxhother with the lies they have told.

WOW this was fantastic, even better than the last one. (These are interlocking standalones, which can be read in any order). There were some twists in this one that were really brilliant. From the beginning all the way to the end, I had no idea how this was going to be resolved or what was going to happen. I couldn't even figure out how exactly the H and h were going to end up meeting. It was a fabulous plot, and very well written. LOVE this one.

This book was even better than the first in the series, HIS. Rien is such a complicated character and Sara is such a good match for him. I love love love this book. Aubrey is a fantastic writer, with a lot of depth to both characters. I highly recommend for anyone who enjoys dark erotic books.

What in the actual fuck?
This popped up in the recommendations when I was testing out the Audible Romance Package, and jesus christ, seriously, what is this? Torture porn, I think? Is this torture porn?
I don't know, because I gave up quickly -- which I likely would have done regardeless, due to the grating narration style.
HARD PASS.

When I first read HIS I was blown away by how dark and delicious it was...and now MINE and it was pretty much the same level of erotic heat and intense suspense. My only issue was that it was so much of a similar idea as the first book...just different players and different motives/reasons for the killings. The dilemna was the same though...a killer who has an innocent woman in his home and has to decide if he can trust her... let her go free or kill her. Of course the attraction makes it near impossible for the psycho killer to let her go...and once he has a taste of her, he doesn't care anymore whether or not she really wants him because he wants her.
You have to read this for yourself to get all the crazy and twisted and interesting plot developments...and you will get a medical lesson in anatomy and some body functions you wish you never knew about!
There were definitely many scenes of non-con and dubious-con sexual activity but damn if it didn't get me seriously turned on reading...whew!
Worth a read if you like kidnap, dark romance or erotica novels.

In the second book of the A Dark Erotic Romance Novel series we meet the plastic surgeon that Gav mentioned, Rein is all kinds of strange. Sara is a struggling actress in need of a job so her agent hooks her up with a man "Gary" who is looking for someone to play his wife the wife that he killed. This book moved very fast too fast at times I mean it was two days. All her life Sara played a role she had trouble with pretense and reality. Rein has also played a role all his life he was dark and dangerous and twisted and I don't like reading about blood and gore and thank God there wasn't a lot of it in this book. I really liked reading this story it was well written and I wished that it was longer or that it went in depth of their relationship. Gary got Sara mixed up in something she knew nothing about he killed a lot of people and his wife and I would have killed him myself. Overall the story was good I just was expecting it to be longer and more to it I gave this book 3.5 stars.

I really liked this book. It has an edge and seems to be always teetering on the brink of sanity. It isn't necessarily a romance, though there is an HEA, it staddles the line somewhere between non-con, dub-con, thriller and mystery. It isn't really in any one category, but touches them all

Our bad guy works for the good guys, and, like all good dark heroes, has some issues. He accepts them and has integrated them into his personality, which is kind of zen-like in a twisted way. Our good girl has has a horrible life, of course, and can't seem to catch a break. Of course, she is perfect for him, once they both accept who they are, how they are and what they are, the mesh perfectly

While to the outside world they seem off on their own, and even more so when together, they have what they have. An overlay of fear, attraction and emotion binds them together quite nicely!

description

I looked around at the library walls and laughed. I remember back in the kindergarten, my teacher had told us all that if we could read, we could always go and explore new places in our minds. We would never be constrained.
My kindergarten teacher had never been locked in a library by a serial killer, though.

“Then I won’t hurt you. But you know something, Sara? It’s true. I’ve never made anyone feel good -really good- before.”
My hands moved slowly behind her back to unclasp her dress.
“You can feel everything?” I asked. “Rein-“
“Good. Then this should be very, very fun.”

This was a decent story. Sara and Rien were interesting characters and I enjoyed their story to a point but it takes place over a very brief time period (2 days) so you have to do a pretty big suspension of disbelief for the story to work.

Sara is a bartender and an aspiring actress in LA. She's not doing so well as an actress and the bar she works at is dead and reducing her hours. Sara grew up poor and can deal with not having much money but things are getting tight. She gets an offer for a day of actress work and she jumps on the chance.

Rien is the son of ambassadors and grew up without love. When it came to emotions his parents never showed them and did their best to control his life. He stumbled in to his current situation but feels he's found his place in life.

Sara goes to meet the person that hired her for the acting job. She finds herself working for a Mr. Steadhill who needs her to be a stand in for his wife. He says it's because he and his wife are fighting and because he's a public figure he can't afford to have others think there's an issue. Mr. Steadhill is supposed to be going to a plastic surgeon for a procedure and Sara is just supposed to wait for him in the waiting room. Sara finds out as much as she can about Mr. Steadhill's wife and goes in to the part. Little does she know that her playing this part will take her in to a killer's embrace.

Basically, Mr. Steadhill and his wife are supposed to be Rien's next victims. When Sara shows in her place she's almost subjected to the treatment Mrs. Steadhill would have gotten but Rien figures out she's not the wife before that. Unfortunately, Sara has seen Rien and Mr. Steadhill and knows what is to happen next so Rien can't let her go. The thing is, Rien kills people but only bad people. He doesn't know what to do with an innocent that got caught up in the middle of the crap. Things are made worse because the people that Rien works for won't let Sara live if they know she knows. There's an attraction between Rien and Sara but it isn't helped by the fact that since Sara is an actress Rien thinks everything she says and does is a lie. It was an interesting premise but things progressed a little too quickly for me. They get past the issues and are starting their relationship (and pretty much a HEA) within 2 days.

Overall, this was a good story but I just had some trouble getting in to it completely. I think if it had taken place over a longer period of time I would have given it 4 stars but the way it is I just couldn't...it was just too rushed.

Sara and Rien! and a lot of gore... seriously, I like a little violence and blood with my books but the descriptions creeped me out! Such details into Rien's killing methods, I can't even think about it! Still, I couldn't put it down... This was an inst-love/ attraction kinda story but it was so nicely executed you just didn't pay attention in the time passing... I can't wait to read the next one in the series!

UPDATED review and additional read date.

This is one of my faves in this little series. Rien is scrumptious.

It’s not a prince and his princess, and it’s not a happy ever after. It’s two people with nothing to lose and everything to gain, holding onto each other for dear life, their bodies trembling together in the darkness. And maybe that’s all I ever wanted.

Sara Everett (25-ish, aspiring actress) is struggling to find work in Hollywood. When her agent calls asking her to pretend to be a man’s wife while he has a medical procedure, she’s ready to jump in. Every girl needs to eat, right?

He talked to me like a lover. A crazed maniacal lover who was keeping me hostage in a library, but a lover nonetheless. His voice promised honeyed sweetness with its lilting words.

Rien Damore (30-ish, plastic surgeon) enjoys his job… what’s not to like about cutting people up? Often times, bad people end up on his operating table and what’s a guy to do??

She was new, and innocent, and although I did not know if she would stay, for now I would keep her and discover more about her. Soon, I would tease out all of her secrets. Soon, I would make her body sing.

When his latest “patient” is accompanied with his wife, things get a little…. choppy.

There are playdates with Gav (book 1), secret identities, broken art, Charles Manson, cupcakes, passion in the dark, identity crisis, and an HFN.

“That’s better than perfect, my love….. my dearest, my beautiful. You are my everything. My indescribable pain and my everlasting pleasure. My passion and my fear…. You are mine, all mine, every last bit of you, no matter when you decide to leave.”

SEX: Even though the first time isn’t until the 45% mark, I thought it was really hot. Some might say it’s a little dubcon, but I find it totally consensual. You know what else??? NO CONDOMS!!! Yay for us! That always makes sex better. They also have some hot butt sex. I’m not into that, but I always love it for my book characters.

SARA & RIEN: I honestly loved both of them. She didn’t piss me off and that’s always a win!

GORE: It’s definitely gorier than the first book, but still nothing traumatic. Just a bit of torture and then death.

AUDIO: Obviously I would have preferred a male narrator, but Carly Robins (aka CJ Bloom) isn’t the worst. She’s pretty popular as far as female narrators go. I’m not saying I’d pay for the audio, but if you have it, it’s an ok listen.

I recommend it.

You can call me Dr. Death. No I don't assist with suicides like Dr. Kavorkian, I'm the last stop you'll see when the goverment has a problem. You'll be told I'll give you a new face to go with that cushy life somewhere else. You'll think your wealth, power can save you, but not from me. I'll feed off your fears, I'll grant you no kindness or mercy, I'll prolong your suffering as I peel the layers off your flesh just to see if you have a soul. My name is Rien. The doctor will see you now.

I was at the wrong place at the wrong time, pretending to be the wife of Mr. Steadhill. But that's what we all do right.. pretend to be someone we're not. We are all actors and actresses in our own right A bunch of phonies living a lie, until its stripped away and we see ourselves for the first time. That's what Rein did for me, he made me real.

My name is Sara, I've never wanted anything out of life, what the kids next door had growing up, fancy cars or money. Nothing, no motivation at all until now. I don't want to die.

I'm must admit that I find myself lost for words. I enjoyed the read, I found it an easy read but very disturbing at times, the fact men are being dissected whilst they are conscious, this was very disturbing. I found some factual bits frustrating, only because I know that opening the chest does not reveal the pumping heart. I couldn't understand why pus us present when the whole event occurs over a two day period.
The relationship between the victim Sara and the serial killer Rein was intense and develops just far too fast for the time period. Because the book only covers this short period, I toes give the impression of being rushed, yet I dud enjoy the story. I loved the fact the victim was drugged and subjected to sexual acts against he wishes in an attempt for Rein to establish if he was being told the truth.
I liked that the ending is sort of left in the sir, not true un dieing love, but more that they are together. The sexual chemistry was very clear, and I do l've the writing style of this author. I find this an easy read, and I will look forward to more.
I would so much like to give 4 stars, but it just wasn't quite there for me, but not far from it

I have to say, this book was surprisingly amazing. It's not my usually genre. Even so, if you are looking for something unique to take your mind away, this book is for you. It was engaging from the start.

The female lead was real. She might be words on a page, but she could be you. She could be me. For the time I read, she was me.

And the male lead? You want to hate him. He's a killer. Sara should hate him. Morally speaking, he should not inspire the her sympathy. Or the multitude of other emotions he inspires throughout the book. But he's more than a murderer.

The themes are intriguing. Is this real or is this fake? What is reality? Can you believe what your eyes are telling you or are you a delusional psychopath? How many masks do we hide behind? And what will you do if someone sees through your mask, to the heart of you?

If I thought I loved the first book in this series (HIS - Gav's story) and didn't think I could enjoy another book more - I was wrong. This book blew me the eff away. Seriously. I wished it were like 10x longer. I'll be starting this authors next series - but I'm not sure it can compare. Seriously. I have a very short attention span and often flip to the last chapter. I was so riveted I never had the chance. It was over and then I was sad, lol. "Mine" is a book that makes me wish I were a better writer, that I could capture this level of intensity. 5+ stars, highly recommended to those who like dark fiction that isn't so dark it leaves you depressed and in a state of shock. There is some heavy themes of dubious content here - but it's done tastefully enough that it's sexy. It's a fine line the author has nailed.

I liked this book even better than His. While there are similarities between the two stories, the nuances in the killers' motivations are distinct, and I enjoyed Rien's and Sara's bantering as they delved into their perceptions of reality.

The characters are more fleshed out here and I really enjoyed the ending--everything wasn't wrapped up as tidily as the first book and this made it much more satisfying. I continue to be amazed at Ms Dark's descriptive ability, and while I didn't find the dissection of the body as gruesome this time around, the eroticism in Rien's and Sara's lovemaking was particularly evocative. Well done, again, Ms Dark. I can't wait to see what else your dark mind comes up with in the future!

I loved this book. It was well written, a rare thing that I see when I read these kinds of books (I'm new to the erotic genre, only a few days ago I started). I enjoyed the plot, the idea of death. Sick and sad to admit it. But I liked this book.

Loved this book

I love dark romances because they are different than other romance books. This book is graphic. I've never read a book with a murderer in it and it was a nice change. I like reading different books. Keep in mind that if you have a week stomach don't read.
