This is the second book in the Brooke Walton series and it takes the story to a whole new level.

Brooke has been accepted into the medical programme at the renowned Rothaker university. Despite the grotty dormitories occupied by the medical students, the huge debt she has taken on in order to study further and the fact that the medical faculty is situated in a dangerous and seedy area due to its proximity to the teaching hospital, Brooke is delighted to finally be embarking on this new phase of her dream to become a surgeon. She is hoping that everything will go smoothly at this new institution and she will not need to take any drastic actions to remove obstacles, in particular people, from her path to success, as she has had to do in the past.

On her first day in her new accommodation, Brooke meets Rachael, another first year student with an intelligence, work ethic and determination to rival her own, but with an overriding goal to help others. The initial meeting between Brooke, an exceptionally good looking woman, and Rachael, a self righteous, do gooder who is intent on always taking the high moral ground in any situation, does not go well and they dislike each other from the start. The author did a sterling job with the creation of Rachael as, despite her good intentions and high ethics, she comes across as being an insufferable prig which sets the reader up to dislike her which makes it difficult to empathise with her later in the book.

Brooke also meets Xander, another first year medical student with an interesting past. Xander chose to do two years of military service in Afghanistan before taking his place at Rothaker to study medicine. Within a short while of his arrival, he starts experiencing flashbacks and suffering nightmares as the medical work programme kicks in and he is exposed to classes in bisection and anatomy. Xander, like Brooke, is an exceptional athlete and ultra good looking so it is natural for the two of them to pair up and start running and exercising together.

The introduction of Xander was a clever move by the author for two primary reasons. Firstly, his story and the post traumatic stress disorder symptoms he displays are fascinating and provide an intriguing sub-plot, and secondly, his relationship with Brooke facilitates the telling of parts of the book from his point of view. Xander and Brooke become more than friends and as he gets to know her better and spend more time with her he gradually starts to see and hear things that act at warning bells to him and he starts to question Brooke's character and motivations.

Brooke is a serial killer. She is completely focused and determined to succeed with an amazing intellect and not abilities to empathise with others or understand their emotional pain. Despite these characteristics, there are so many things about Brooke that are wonderful and she has some endearing characteristics which create a conflict in the reader as you find yourself routing for a serial killer to come out on top. The relationship between Xander and Brooke was particularly conflicting because they are both so interesting and you want their relationship to succeed.

I enjoyed this book thoroughly and will definitely read the next book in this series.

Rothaker is the continuing story of Brooke Walton medical student and psychotic killer. This thrilling mystery/murder story is has many similarities to a recent series on cable titled Dexter. However, where Dexter was taught to kill only other killers, our lovely Brooke only kills those who get seriously in her way.
Author Ruff has a created an interesting world focusing on this lovely blonde with a passion for physical fitness and dissection. This year, Brooke broke up with her “boyfriend” Ethan due to his move back to California after graduation from Everett. This year she’s a medical first year student at Rothaker and has vowed to herself to have a few differences. Namely a better social connection to others, and more tolerance for those who get in her way.
The plot thickens when Rachael, another student threatens to go to the dean about Brooke writing a part of a project for another student who had to return to India for his father’s funeral and to help his family. Brooke falls back into her default position of eliminating problems by killing those who make them.
Okay, that’s the set up and no more spoilers...you have to read this for yourself to get the full effect and believe me it’s effective! Author Ruff brings back or mentions a few familiar people from the first book and spices this one up with a real boyfriend and love interest for Brooke. Just to make it more interesting, he’s suffering from PTSD...and having flashbacks.
The manipulations, interesting interactions, and great storytelling make this a page turner and while it is a serial story, it doesn’t leave you on a breathless cliffhanger...just an interesting...Oooohhh what’s next! Grab a bracing drink and something to chew on besides your fingernails and enjoy!

Rothaker by Jenifer Ruff is the 2nd book in the Brooke Walton series. Having completed her college years at Everett College, Brooke Walton is now a medical student at Rothaker. Determined that nothing will stop her winning a prized surgery scholarship, she takes drastic measures to prevent anyone getting in her way, continuing her murdering spree. This is definitely a series that needs to be read in the correct order as it takes over from the first book which provides critical elements. According to the author's note, this was originally supposed to be the last book ending with unresolved issues, but the author decided to continue on. I'm still not sure what I think about it. Brooke is a self-centred psychopath. She sees nothing wrong with removing any obstacles to her goals. She is a master liar and manipulator and puts on a great front. There are those that are starting to see through her though, unwittenly putting themselves in danger. It is odd that she has been able to get away with all she has been doing. I have had the third book on my TBR for many years but not liking to read out of order, started with the first. Not sure if I would have bothered to continue on otherwise although it would be nice if Brooke was exposed.

Rothaker is an excellent read! It's the second in the series by Ruff and follows Brooke, a meticulous and calculating medical student who will stop at nothing to fulfill her ambitions. Ruff does an excellent job of profiling the mind of a psychotic killer. What's most interesting to me is that we see Brooke's mindset and actions are escalating from the first book to the second as she becomes a master at hiding her emotions and "putting on a show" for others. Brooke's actions are in stark contrast to those of her fellow medical students. Of particular interest is Xander, who suffers from PTSD. We see Xander struggle and suffer through the terrifying images of death, while Brooke seems to revel in it. Throughout the novel, we see Xander and others try to "read" Brooke and understand her, completely unaware of what she is capable of. As conflict arises between Brooke and one of her peers, the inevitable happens. Brooke's actions and decisiveness are terrifying and the fallout that ensues is fascinating. This novel was fast paced and interesting! I read it over a weekend and I did not want to put it down!

It's rare that a second book is better than the first, but I think that's the case here. Everett paved the foundation for a great suspenseful and thrilling series and Rothaker is continuing on the same path, but in a more pronounced way.

Brooke has a goal and she will do whatever it takes to accomplish it. Her incredible ambition has lead her to do some rather devious things, but that's okay. None of it bothers her anyway.

Without a doubt, I am looking forward to the continuation of Brooke's story. I just can't wait to see which obstacles she encounters next.

Rothaker is a great sequel to Everett and follows Brooke into the ultra competitive and stressful world of a first-year med student. While we can't all identify with the medical terminology, the author does a great job telling the story of how goals and ambitions can cause irrational thoughts and actions to be Brooke's guide. Passing thoughts, which we have all had, like "this would be so much easier if he/she wasn't here," lead us through jaw-dropping behavior right up to Rothaker's conclusion.

If you want a read that isn't predictable or easy to put down, this is the book for you.

I enjoy both this series and the Victoria Heslin one as well. Although, I'd say this set is more aimed at the younger audience, perhaps. It made me chuckle as she write f-ing as opposed to the proper word, yet is happily having characters murdered in gruesome ways on the other hand !! It just amuses me....
This one is another very good story and I only marked it down 1* because there are still too many mistakes in it for my liking. I feel a bit mean saying this in her case as I haven't needed to pay for any of her great stories thus far, but fair's fair....I would for other authors.
Brooke is still up to her nefarious shenanigans and I shouldn't, but do find she makes me laugh at times. Despite her more twisted ideas, she IS a likeable character for some reason. I have book 3 downloaded already and look forward to reading it, especially as this one ended on a real cliffhanger, too !! Another beauty of a cover as well.
But those mistakes......I do wish she got herself a better proofreader as that's all these books need to be earning her 5* for me....work load didn't need a space and neither does country side, there are quite a lot of apostrophe mistakes, words missed in sentences, speechmarks missed or added where nobody is talking, commas missed out a lot and quite a few places where a hyphen is needed as well. Then for variation a missed out question mark and also a fullstop !! Steel and not steely was written, poured not pored, softy not softly and their not they're !! Pretty terrible nobody is catching these BEFORE publication !!
She also had Brooke arriving at her new school in August if May was 9 months away, according to my sums, but then we're suddenly in October !! Then one of the guys mentions that "whenever I get over the flu"......like it's a regular occurrence. I found it hard to believe one girl was 97 pounds in weight !! That is childsize !! I also did not believe for one minute that Brooke wouldn't have her phone password-protected, either.
If all these mistakes were tidied up this would be one sterling job done, as she's completed the REALLY hard part in writing it in the first place !!

This was an interesting perspective that I really enjoyed. We already knew who the killer was and we’re privy to her thoughts and seeing situations through her eyes. Super lame and abrupt ending! I hated that—not even really a cliffhanger—it just ended. My only real criticism.

Woooooow!

I want sure what was in store after first meeting Brook. Yes I was excited about a lady psychopath, we don't get many of them to read about. I can say I was surprised, shocked, sad, happy hen shocked again! What a cliffhanger!
Such a well written, engaging read, with well thought out characters, places and events. Can't wait to continue on and see how everything plays out.

Rothaker was an easy read. As always, Jenifer was brilliant. Brooke is almost unbelievable... deep inside you know you should not, but it's impossible not to love her. She knows what she wants and she gets it done. I was biting my nails in several chapters. This book also has a very captivating storyline, one of the subjects is really deep and gets you thinking seriously about some issues. Easy to like, captivating characters.

Book 2 of the "Everett" series. Not as funny as the first book in the series, Everett. But also a fast, interesting read. More psychological insight, this time into a new character, who has PTSD. Unfortunately for him, he gets involved with the resourceful, determined, conscience-less Brooke.

"There are lines you don't cross."
Still obsessively pursuing her ambition to become a surgeon, Brooke enters the first of her four year academic stay at Rothaker Teaching Hospital. Despite working several shifts leading various exercise cllasses, she has serious debts already accrued from her education so far, with more in prospect to see her through this college. She works hard, is meticulous and very good. But she has to be better than good. She has to be the best if she wants to win the surgery scholarship in her fourth year which will pay off all of her debts. In this she has two main rivals, chief of whom is the annoying woman, Rachel, beautiful, comlassionate, clever, hard working, outspoken and very much liked by all of her fellow students except one: Brooke. Rachel cannot be allowed to threaten Brooke's future...

The reader is taken inside the mind of the devious Brooke as she navigates the murky waters of achieving her goals. Although and is not a particularly pleasant character, author Jenifer Ruff builds a tension which draws the reader's empathy towards Brooke in much the same way that Patricia Highsmith did for Ripley, albeit in a lesser way. Narrator Stephanie Dillard enhances this with her admirable performance, her reading faithfully following the emotional nuances of the text as well a giving good, individual voices to all of the protagonists. Her narration is clear and well intoned also.

An interesting book, the second in this series, which does not depend on acquaintance with book one to succeed. My thanks to the rights holder of Rothaker for freely gifting me with a complimentary copy, at my request, via Audiobook Boom. It is a story, easy and fascinating to read, which reflects the outlook of a talented self obsessed sociopath who truly believes that her personal right to succeed will benefit others. Quite mesmeric, and recommended.

I loved the first Brooke Walton book, "Everett", and was eager to continue following her story as she moved on to medical school. I thought she wasn't as careful or clever in this second installment as in the first. In the first book, she was very careful and quiet, not taking the bait when someone, specifically Jessica, tried to rile her. But in this second installment, Brooke had arguments with Rachael, which some people observed. She was also on television, talking as if Rachael was her best friend. Brooke definitely didn't fly under the radar this time. Regarding her nonexistent certifications as a personal trainer, if Brooke was a woman of color, her boss, Mike, would not have swept the lies under the rug. However, as Brooke is a pretty, blonde WHITE woman, he bent over backwards to hide her lies. This is partly why pretty white Brooke has been able to get away with murder--as well as her many lesser offenses.

I listened to the audiobook version of this book.

In Everett we see what a psychopath Brooke is and how she will stop at nothing to become a heart surgeon. We get a similar experience as we follow this character to the medical school Rothaker. It is fascinating how calculating she is, I can't help but be entirely captivated. There are some gruesome moments, but mostly it's a captivating listen. Her logic is bizarre but at the same time I see how she decides to do what she does. Also, I can't believe her obsession with Rachel's mole. Very well written story, can't wait for the next one!

The narrator does an excellent job in this performance as she did in the last one. Her acting is a perfect match for Brooke as a character.

Brooke Walton has gotten away with murder, literally, at each of the two colleges she attended. Now she is in her first year of med-school. She has vowed to never commit another! With her tough schedule and job teaching exercise classes at a local gym to cover extra costs, will she reach her goal of becoming a surgeon.

Despite the obstacles and people who have stood in her way in the past, she graduated with high honors as her class valedictorian. Much closer to ger goals, will she reach them without any more interference? Because any interference won’t be tolerated!

Best laid plans

Brooke is disturbed. Book two picks up several years after book one and Brooke is on to medical school and her next set of goals. Her plans to not have to deal with any obstacles quickly is thwarted and the rest of the story looks toward the idea of what happened to Rachel and Brookes romance with Xander, another med student. One student form the other book does make an appearance, but the rest are all new. Loved Jeff and Connor as they brought some humor and fun dynamics to many scenes. The ending was a tad abrupt and had me feeling bad for Xander, but also appreciating the sick genius that is Brooke!

This series keeps getting better
This picks up shortly after Everett with brooke now in med school she’s trying hard not to repeat her past but nothing will stop her from realizing her dream
I liked how this book was darker really shows brooks lack of empathy
Stephanie does a great job narrating both books
Looking forward to book 3 on audio

Brooke is an atypical, somewhat unique, almost likable character. Stephanie Dillard does a very good job of voicing her and all of the characters in this unusual psychological thriller. Although the plot is based on a highly improbable twist, the story is intriguing and suspenseful. Unfortunately, the ending is almost a cliffhanger. It's not at all satisfying.

This book was so good.

What a unsuspecting creepy character yet I need to know more. Received this book free on bookbub and it was so good that : A. I didn't put it down and B. I purchased the next book in the series. The fact it is a medical student is intriguing enough . This would make a great movie or series. Hats off to the writer.

What a stupid ending. I only forced myself to keep reading because I wanted closure and it was a horrible disappointment

This is one of the worst reading experiences I’ve had in a while. I honestly have no idea how anyone child have read it and not given it a zero or one star rating. Literally a waste of time.

A cop-out

The writing was fine in this story and the characters were interesting. But the ending wasn't a conclusion. It was like she got tired writing , needed the money so published. Later, needing more money, she supposedly finished the rest of the story. I won't be reading it.

The second in the series, pretty much follows the same formula as the first. Though readable, I would like a little more humour, all be it sarcastic an ironic. I appreciate Brooke is lacking basic emotions and this is maintained well throughout. I would like a bit more on Brooke's childhood to ascertain why she has become a killer of anyone who gets in her way.

The first book in the series, Everett, was so good I knew I had to read Rothaker. I was not disappointed. It was just as suspenseful and kept my interest throughout the fast-paced story. The only negative for me was the abrupt ending. I wish there was a third book in the series.

I am not sure what I really think about these books. I enjoy them, but I do not love them. I sometimes feel that the character Brooke is over written. The storyline is so captivating though that I have to finish the series just to find out what happens and if she gets caught out.

This is the 2nd book in this series and it does not disappoint. Our resident psycho is back at it...once again someone is (in her mind anyway) threatening to get in the way of her goals. Great sequel!

Quite an interesting ride with a very good sociopath character. I enjoyed the school scene. The story moved along nicely and kept my interest up. I found Brooke very interesting. I could put it down and pick it up so it wasn’t riveting but still good. 4.8

Terrific book

The writer has written a tightly wound up who done it? It's shocking who the villain is I won't give any details! You need to read the book yourself. It's A gripping pathological drama with lots of gory details! I wish the ending was more conclusive. It's too iffy!

Only made it to end of Chapter 12

I just couldn't get into the book. Characters were not likable: Barbie, Ken, Mr Body-builder etc. Main character was a narcissistic psycho. Apparently book ends as a cliff-hanger, which I dislike. Others may enjoy but not for me.
