YOU'RE MINE TO LOOK AFTER, MII-CHAN.

Before Mii-chan turns eighteen, she'll need to decide how to live the rest of her life--cat or human? Her emotions are in total turmoil! Her adoptive roommate Iori is totally oblivious to her feelings, and he hits it off with the cat cafe manager Makio, who, in an amazing twist, has adopted Mii-chan's sister, Tamaki! Mako takes them all on a fun-filled afternoon trip to the lake and explains the ins and outs of cat-girl care to Iori while the sisters play.
Cat girls don't have it easy--someone's been after Mii-chan. In fact, Iori turns his back on Mii-chan for just one moment during a hike, and a man grabs her! Who kidnapped Mii-chan? Will Iori and Tamaki be able to find her?!

They really leaned into that whole ‘Mio needs to have sex before she’s 18’ thing this volume, which is… unfortunate. The age gap between her and Iori was one thing, this is a whole other kitten caboodle.

Divested of that unfortunate choice, we… have a ‘guy ends up with somebody’s boobs smashed in his face’ moment too. Needless to say, the reasons for my high marks for the first volume were not exactly emulated here.

Divested of that, I still enjoy this, after making sure that I point out those caveats. The expansion of the cast to include Mio’s sister, Tamaki, and her owner, Makio, is a bit of a mixed blessing, but overall works.

Makio runs a cat cafe and she and Iori hit it off well enough that Mio gets jealous, although the latter sort of moves on from it (Mio does feel like an out of control cat with the zoomies at times). Makio and Iori have a home visit and a spark (literally one) flies, but you can tell it’s not where we’re going.

Which is too bad. As much as she seems like a good match for Iori, Makio also turns out to be kind of a total weirdo and I came to really appreciate her quirky nature as the story went on. Tamaki could use a little more to do as she’s basically just aloof. That checks for cat behaviour, but in a cast this small she could use something else.

I mean, the cat stuff is fine. Tamaki’s death stare and general clawing and scratching is fun (Mio kicking Iori at the cafe so another cat dislodges from his lap is the best part of the volume). I do question Mio’s sudden love for water though. That definitely feels like an excuse for the manga; I know some cats like it, but they’re the exception, not the rule.

Still, the story is okay, just not the same level of breezy fun. Iori remains a bit of a loser, yet we don’t see much difference in him. His relationship with Mio, dubious as it is, has its moments - him going out of his way to learn a recipe for her is particularly sweet.

The more serious this gets, what with that time limit and pervert stalkers who would want to imprison Mio, the less enjoyable it is. The segments that work are when it’s actually about having a good time - Mio’s design is adorable and when she gets to be expressive it’s hard not to find it incredibly charming.

Which is kind of saying I’d read this for the art, and that’s not completely wrong. I think the times when it goes slice-of-life are a better fit for it than any high drama, and it does the latter a bit more than it needs to here. Being a more relaxed romance, appropriate or no, would have played up its strengths.

3 stars - it’s fun, with some issues. How you feel about those issues will directly impact your enjoyment, I suspect, and it swerves a little too much away from its best points in this second book.

I thought this was a fun volume. Glad we had the introduction of Makio and Tamaki to the cast of characters. I really like Tamaki she is super cute and the looks on her face at times when she is surprised/scared/unsure is absolutely adorable. She also adds a dynamic to the story that we didn't have before and is a good way for bringing in a certain obsessive individual at the end. Honestly if it wasn't for the plot line with Mii-chan I could totally see Iori and Makio together.
