A spirited picture book about the epic struggle and dramatic breakthrough of Agnes de Mille, the legendary choreographer of Oklahoma! and Carousel whose work changed the course of Broadway history.
Something new is about to happen, something extraordinary.
In a dusty California town, Agnes de Mille dreams of becoming a dancer. She gallops to New York, then London, performing a show here, a dance there, combining old steps with new. But no one knows what to make of Agnes. She’s not a ballet dancer or a modern dancer or a folk dancer. So what is she? Then one summer she attends a rodeo, where the cowboys’ powerful and unbridled movements transform her life—and the history of dance—forever.
This vibrant and luminous picture book biography of choreographer Agnes de Mille gives young readers a front row seat to the story of a trail blazing American artist. Through the image of a lonesome trail that Agnes must follow in order to find her way, we find an access point into an extraordinary life. Discouraged for being different, interrupted by world war, and stalled by theatrical failures, Agnes overcomes all obstacles in time and breaks the structured ballet mold, expanding her art form to reflect the unique experience of ordinary Americans. This beautiful book brings her story to life while painting a picture of the American experience in the historical context of the early 20th century. With gorgeous illustrations to admire and an inspiring re-readable story, COWBOYS AT THE BALLET is a must-have for every library shelf!

This story shines a light on Agnes’ many accomplishments, and the struggles she endured despite being related to Cecil B. DeMille and growing up privileged. Together, these talented creatives bring a dynamic tribute to a woman who reshaped American dance. Perfect for a classroom or library setting and for budding dancers and artists! COWBOYS AT THE BALLET tells the story of a unique and talented woman who did not fit any mold and eventually succeeded in making a new mold for herself. Without mentioning grit and resilience, this narrative tells a story about exploring who you are truly meant to become through disappointments and set backs. It's a lovely biography of a lesser known historical figure, paced well for younger aged audiences and complex enough for older ones. The art is also engaging. It captures the emotion, movement, and artistry of dance as well as the historical settings of Agnes George de Mille's life.
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of Cowboys at the Ballet, and it hit all the marks (dance pun very much intended). Non-fiction picture books can be tricky, especially when the subject of said story has a winding path like Agnes de Mille. But the author handles this beautifully, using subtle repetition and callbacks to her upbringing to connect all the pieces of her story. The illustrations are gorgeous with lots of movement, fitting for a story focused on dance. Great messages of perseverance and breaking the mold. Give it a read!
An inspiring story of daring to be different, especially as a woman. Agnes de Mille's last name maybe familiar, but so is her choreography for Oklahoma!, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and more. But the road to get her fame was long and difficult because Agnes wasn't like anyone around her.
This is a great story of persistence and to staying with your dream and inspiration, no matter how many years it takes. A real-life example too of another "first" in Broadway (first female choreographer/director of a Broadway musical) that might inspire young musical lovers.

COWBOYS AT THE BALLET tells the fascinating story of Agnes De Mille’s rise from outsider in the world of ballet to a creative force who captured the spirit of our nation. Gorgeously energetic illustrations evoke the authentically original character of Agnes de Mille’s dances. This book dances its way into your heart and provides inspiration in all the best possible ways. Hiding backstage are great lessons like perseverance, and being proactive, the value of a good education while being true to yourself, but they never upstage the entertainment value of these vintage-style illustrations or the well-written tale of a misfit who made her own way -- a relevant tale in any era.
A very interesting read about a lesser known person who had such an impact on the field of dance. It is a story of perserverence and following your passions, even when there are bumps along the way. Written beautifully and lyrically with expressive illustrations, this book takes us through all the key moments of Agnes de Mille's life and gives the reader a strong understanding about her life and influence. A great addition to libraries and homes!
As someone not well-versed in Broadway, I hadn't heard of Agnes before reading an advanced copy of this book, but I'm now a fan. From an early age Agnes knew her heart and was driven by a creative vision that didn't fit neatly into existing expectations or categories. And yet, paired with hard-work and a growth mindset, this nonconformity is precisely what led to her ultimate success. Her dramatic journey leaps off the page in beautiful illustrations.
A Call to Follow Your Dreams This beautifully illustrated story, bursting with language that evokes movement and determination, interweaves the dreams of one young girl with the spirit of a young country in the context of a changing world. It offers not just a biography but a call to be who you are and follow your dreams. A treat for any kid who doesn’t quite fit the mold and dreams that they are meant for more.

This is a story that shows there isn’t always an obvious path to success. The fluidity of the art captures the beauty of Mille’s movement. A must have for school libraries!
What a rootin-tootin good time in a PB bio! I didn't know the story of Agnes de Mille before reading this book, and now I'm so glad to have learned! Claire's writing brings that cowboy, alive spirit of the West -- and the heart of the story -- alive, and the art shows so much movement and vibrancy. it feels like the art leaps off the page!

I was swept away by this inspirational story of choreographer Agnes de Mille. Agnes dares to be different and although her endeavours do not always end in success Agnes persists. This story will inspire young readers to break the mould and follow their heart. The illustrations capture the movement of the dancers beautifully and I was particularly drawn in by the atmospheric historical settings. As an artist, I resonated with the long and winding road to finding your creative voice.
Agnes de Mille wants to be a dancer, but she does not fit in. Her ideas, her body, her moves, they all break the mold. She spends years trying to forge her own path. Finally, America and the world are ready for her vision. Her dance piece and then ballet “Rodeo” feature the quintessentially American cowboys and cowgirls. Lyrical writing sets the scene and chronicles Agnes’ amazing story. The art makes me want to kick up my heels - there is a sense of exuberance and celebration.
An inspiring history of a lesser-known American treasure, Agnes DeMille, and her genre-busting moves. Despite being far, far ahead of her time, Agnes achieves her dreams with grit and a perserverence most of us would be happy to have half of. Active illustrations and vivid scenes move the story through each obstacle until the high-kicking end. Perfect for little dancers and kids who dream big.
Saddle up and hold on for a great read! Here's a book that spotlights a little-known figure in dance history. Lyrical word choices carry a western theme throughout. My favorite line: "Traditions and rules clatter to the ground like rusty nails." This book offers a fresh take on evergreen topics such as celebrating perseverance and imagination.
Who can resist this title? Cowboys. And ballet? How unexpected is that? Claire Bobrow’s text, with its lively, western-flavored word choices, pairs perfectly with Ilaria Urbinati’s stunning art, to tell the story of how choreographer Agnes de Mille did, indeed, bring cowboys to the ballet. Yee-Haw!

The wonderful illustraitons totally capturee the energy of dance. It’s a fun read with cool art and a great message about doing what you love, even if it’s not what people expect. Definitely one we’ll keep on the shelf for a long time.

Intriguing premise that played out gracefully. I love how it's aptly a story about pivoting. Themes of perseverance, creativity, being true to one's roots/self, not being afraid to attempt something new, and just deeply loving what you do are all here, but it was Agnes' repeated willingness to reinvent her craft that made ripples in the industry. I hope this is read far and wide, inspiring little ones and their grown-ups!
