Across the globe, century after century, men and women were burned, drowned, hanged, tortured, imprisoned, persecuted, and murdered for witchcraft. None of them were witches. They died protecting a terrible and hidden witches, real witches, are out there. They are ancient, elusive, and deadly creatures that are rarely seen and even more rarely survived.
This October, superstar creators SCOTT SNYDER (SEVERED, Batman) and JOCK (SNAPSHOT, Batman) unveil WYTCHES, and introduce you to a world of unimaginable horror in a special EXTRA-SIZED FIRST ISSUE.
Scott Snyder is the Eisner and Harvey Award winning writer on DC Comics Batman, Swamp Thing, and his original series for Vertigo, American Vampire. He is also the author of the short story collection, Voodoo Heart, published by the Dial Press in 2006. The paperback version was published in the summer of 2007.
It's not merely the first few pages of Issue #1, but an actual preview. It's about a brother visiting his sister who lives out in the woods. They're different characters from those in the main Wytches story and don't spoil anything. Instead this preview sets up the world and what you can expect--mainly, just how far the storytellers are going to go. So if that's something that's going to unnerve you, pass this over; don't read this.
I'm not going to spoil it, but it's an actual horror comic. Not horror-lite urban fantasy, but actual horror. Read it. It's free and only 7 pages or so. Just have Wytches, Vol. 1 handy, because you're going to want to read what happens next.
If you're squeamish, however, you should probably avoid this series. It's really dark and scary and pretty much undoes all the goodwill witches have earned with Harry Potter. And the series only gets more intense.
Finally, if you like this preview, yeah, you're going to read the rest of the series. But if you like this one, you'll probably also enjoy The Witch: A New England Folk-Tale (2015). Again, it's a story that makes witches scary again. Forget the cone hats and wriggly nose, instead they've more in common with the malicious cannibal crones.
Addendum: This preview is in the Wytches Volume One. It's included as a bonus in the end, not as a prologue to the main story.
I am not into horror. Despite that - and this is really a scary story - I wanted to know more about this world Snyner created. It really achieved its purpose to lure me into the woods. Who would you pledge?
I sampled this before buying the first volume. Seems to hold its promises and looks quite spooky, and it definitely has me intrigued. The art work isn't really my favorite thing, but it definitely does the job of giving it the creepy vibe it needs.
This is a really cool new take on one of the oldest mythological ideas in human history. The art is great and the color choices really make each page pop.
