Don't miss book 6 of the action-packed LitRPG Apocalypse Series by Todd Herzman, with levels, a detailed System, classes, skills, towers, loot, & everything you love about progression fantasy. It's perfect for fans of Defiance of the Fall, System Universe, and He Who Fights With Monsters!
Up to this point, i rate this series 5 stars. The first 5 books have been very entertaining. I havent felt a moment of annoyance. That is, until this book.
I am not quite sure what Herzman is trying to achieve, or the direction he is going, but he should stop imo.
I have been fine with minimal progression with Xavier's character arc when it comes to his personality, morals, and behavior. However, I am NOT fine when it regresses (especially in such an inorganic and "stupid" way).
How many times does Xavier think about his own possible arrogance, willingness to EXCESSIVELY push limits, notice an incorrect feeling of invulnerability, and all while blatantly disregarding any advice from others (even while stating that it would be stupid to not listen)? The answer is a PLETHORA. And it is constantly justified with a "well, it has worked out for me so far".
It is not often a character makes a significant regression in mature thinking and problem solving capability. Probably because it is not entertaining and produces a feeling of artificial difficulty.
And this happened so often, that the "cliff hanger" was foreshadowed extremely early and made it so there was no longer and sort of suspense or excitement for what was coming. It became obvious after the fourth instance of the "am I being arrogant" process (and it happened several more times).
I am not sure how to feel now. On one side I am disappointed because I have little hope for the next book. In fact, my "best case scenario" is that the next book will just be filler to correct this path for future books. But the other side....I am no longer as excited and impatient for the next book. So i will probably be able to hold off for several months to allow the series to accumulate.
I REALLY hope this trend does not continue and Herzman recovers the previous magic
Ohhhh myyy! I love this action-driven litRPG series! It starts right where the last book left off with Xavier and his Cadre! The Necromancer, the Dragon he'd brought back into the Mortal Plain, and the Golem all diving the Demon Moon Thazamar dungeon! As Xavier had a five month break from climbing the Tower of Champions. And he didn't want to waste that time slacking. He and his companions all needed to get stronger! While he soloed a lot of the floors Xavier's Cadre went at their own pace, they were strong enough that they didn't need a chaperone. And no Xavier didn't finish the dungeon but the system suddenly recalled him two months early! As Xavier has been grinding some of his stats have become really over powered for his level, but he never loses sight on being human, even though he changed his race sometime back to Dragonkin 😆. And there's plenty of pop-cultural references to find. So yeah grab the book and a coffee while Xavier grinds away! But really Todd Herzman Wow did you hafta add the last chapter? You already knew that your readers would get the next book ... but now we Need it! Soooooooo write faster!
Here's a couple of quotes:
"Funnily enough, it had been in the serial He Who Fights With Beasts by Pantaloon, where he’d read about voice projection."
"...inspired by a character from Star Trek—but after he’d walked through the rooms that contained his memories, he was feeling more nostalgic than usual. You have renamed the soul bound weapon Lost Bone of a Dead God to Bones."
At first, this book was interesting as you were able to see Xavier's new group gaining levels and seeing what they could become. Then he was pulled back to the tower, and the grind began. The 80th floor was fascinating for the storyline.
When Xavier started really learning about spell patterns, it was a bit fascinating. Until the last two thirds of the book became nothing but TEDIOUS pattern building and constant internalized existential crisis of who he is becoming and why the system seems to be taking such an active interest in him. Boring does not even begin to cover the last two thirds of the book; just TEDIOUS.
Xavier has always been head strong and a risk taker. Even with all of the times he has realized that he went to far and fell into the trap of being over confident over and over again, he doesn't learn. Even his soul weapon which knows him better than he knows himself warns him to slow down. Xavier doesn't listen, and the book ends with Xavier in a situation that absolutely sets up the theme for the next book; which I don't want to read.
The author has refused to allow any kind of character growth to happen to Xavier. When we think the character has had enlightenment due to self reflection, the character forgets all about it during the next trial and consistently does the same unwise actions of being too arrogant/cocky. The character is not getting wiser at all. He is betting stronger, but that just allows him to take more grander risks that gets him into insane amounts of trouble.
I would recommend giving up this series. I have NEVER done that before. Good luck.
I have been reading this series since it first appeared on my Kindle feed, and after the first book, I was completely hooked. I have reminders posted in my Kindle and on my phone calendar to remind me when the next book is available. I write all that to say: “Damnit, Todd Herzman! You can’t end a book that way and then make me wait!”
If this is a new series and you’re reading this, start from Book 1 and clear your social calendar. Hopefully, when you finish this one, number 7 will already be available…
Everything was good, great, except it was the same. There was no movement on the relationships aspect of life. He worked alone, which I get and writing was good, good ideas, all of it, but there needs to be more of a relationship. Romantic relationships are normal and desired by everyone. Nobody will go that long without one. I also don’t know why authors don’t bring the MCs having kids into the story. That would be awesome to have them training their kids, stories going on about their kids lives.
It suffers from the issues that all power crept stories do which is that there are large sections of the book where the main character is unchallenged. Yes there is a driving force but the story lags as we oscillate between high octane moments and moments where nothing of real importance is happening. There are things to like and things to dislike. I wanted to read a kind of goofy ridiculous OP story and so this worked for me, but I could totally imagine the same thing getting on peoples nerves.
The end of this book is stupid. Author is forcing needless drama into an already tense plot line. This is like the third time crunch *gasps* "what will our hero do" moment.
On his latest floor of the Tower, Xavier stands before a low B grade hive queen, who he immediately deems is no real threat to him. However, for some illogical reason, he still decides to take the most reckless approach to killing her. He succeeds but his victory is a hollow one as he wakes up in the staging room with all his cores shattered.
Nothing really new in the series, same old same old. I enjoyed the growth of inscription, and the eightieth floor subplot. The main character had too many moments of introspection driving his changes / actions instead of outside events forcing him to change which I didn’t appreciate. the writing of the dialogue has definitely gotten better as the series progressed. Just feel like not much is changing book to book
If you like the previous books in the series you're going to like this one. Same great characterization action adventure. More of a singular focus on the main character which I appreciate. Good battles. Good progression, a solid book through and through. Hope this review helps. I apologize for any spell and errors. I'm writing this review voice to text
Wow . That was an epic instalment of accidental champion . I love all the little nods and Easter eggs towards other authors. Can’t wait for the next book
This is a fun fast paced series with an OP hero. What a great way to spend an evening! I also love that the author has kept it clean! Thanks for the great books, keep them coming!
This is probably one of the best books in the series so far. Some scenes go on for way longer than they should have, but fortunately this doesn’t harm the pace too much. I loved the part where Xavier teams up with an alternate version of himself.
Another good entry in the series. This one was a bit more dedicated to just fighting than I would have loved, but was well written and kept the growth going. Interested to see what happens next with the way this one ended.
Welp, the accidental champion keeps growing and challenging himself. This is a really unique take on an almost OP MC, but I'm definitely enjoying it. Can't wait to read the next in the series!
I find myself skipping more all the time. It didn't bother me the first few books but it has started to. The over all story might be a good one but the amount of drudgery I have to go through to Read it has almost become too much to bear.
