"We hold these truths to be self-evident,This surprisingly slim volume by former TIME editor and CNN CEO Isaacson parses the second sentence of the Declaration of Independence word by word to provide interesting insights into how America was created — and by inference (and a few direct comments), how it is spiraling downwards today. There's a nice final piece on the confluence of "Common Ground" and "The American Dream" — i.e., the balance between the greater good for all and the pursuit of personal opportunity — and then a few brief and not totally pessimistic thoughts on "the Way Forward." And then the last third of the book is actual excerpts from John Locke, Rousseau, and George Mason's Virginia Declaration of Rights, as well as both Jefferson's original draft and then the final version of the Declaration itself, (all of which I frankly skipped).
