In a world full of rooms, the most valuable lesson you can learn is how to read them.
Lo’ak Jordan has been reading the rooms of the streets for as long as he could read. The one room that he has not been successful at reading is the room of love. How can you read a room that you haven’t had a chance to walk in? What happens when he trips across the threshold? Will he stay in the room or determine that it’s not for him?

She has always had a love for books beginning with the Baby Sitter’s Club, R.L. Stine, and Christopher Pike. She dabbled in writing as she grew up but never took it as seriously as she should have.

I really enjoyed this story. Tsireya found her family with Lo. He didn’t play about her either.

For a short read, I thought it was good! Many short stories I’ve read were rushed with no plot or just spice, spice, and more spice. The author provided back stories so that we felt “caught up” in a sense and not rushed throughout the story. She provided just enough spice so that it did not overwhelm the plot. The “read the room” concept was also good as the author broke it down in toddler & adult concept for everyone to understand. I loved the love, the family, overcoming trials and trauma, and the growth. This was my first read from this author and I must say, I’ll be visiting her catalog real soon! 🫶🏽

This author is really hit or miss for me. One book’ll be 4 stars and up, then the next is barely pushing a 2. I think I’m gonna have to let this author go, because the last few reads have just been decent nothing worth the hype.
My main issue here? The story wasn’t fully fleshed out. We’re introduced to a FMC who’s book smart, focused, and determined to escape her rough upbringing. But then we get the “I’m keeping my baby” storyline… and it makes zero sense. We never get her thought process, and honestly? It comes off STUPID AF. She’s a ward of the state, getting free college, trying to break the cycle of poverty and she willingly decides to have a baby with no job, no stability, nothing? Be serious.
And THEN she says the dad signed over his rights and gave her a lump sum after the baby was born, she used this money to buy a car and mentions it was 5 years ago… so why is the kid only two years old? The math is not mathing. Lmao like please help me understand cus how’s the car older than the baby but they arrived at or close to the same time???
Also, if I had to hear “read the room” one more time… girl. We GET it. The room is a library. It’s been read. Dewey Decimal’s tired. Let it go.
The MMC was a rich dummy. Their romance had no depth. Authors really need to be freed from the good sex = true love narrative. They talked a little, she played housewife, he was out doing vague thug business… and suddenly they’re in love? Getting married? Nah.
Lastly, can we normalize STD testing in these books? Especially when one character was with a cheating ex who was eating booty. Like… be serious. Head on down to the clinic and get swabbed. It’s giving unrealistic and unsafe.

Definitely was a very intriguing story with very real life lessons. I like how the author showed some of the MMCs like Lo’ak and Joey their sides that had more “humaneness” to them even though they ultimately were in the streets because it shows at the end of the day these are people with real lives and families in society like anyone else. But also shows the dichotomy of the two different lifestyles and how at sometimes it was hard to keep the separation between the business and personal life/family which often was put on the line a lot of times.
I really liked the versatility with T’sireya’s character and the budding romance with Lo’ak even though she was put in a terrible situation at first it ended up working for the better.
I did enjoy the banter between basically everybody versus Alexi cause she had it coming and don’t get me started with Mama Dee cause her comebacks and insults were fierce! All in all it was entertaining but one small tidbit I did notice was how baby Jedi (or Lucas) Reya’s child talked more like a primary school aged child then a toddler who’s two years old but I see others share the same sentiment. Also the amount of times Reya used the word “malarkey” had me weak.
Although the “read the room” concept still was smart and applies to many areas of life.

Read the book!
Can I get anymore obsessed with this author’s work?! Lo and Reya were solid from their first meet and Jedi/Lucas sealed the deal! I love a man that can wholeheartedly express how he feels and putting those feelings into action. Lo is that man. Reya was a mind her business stay in her lane type of woman who happened to be in the wrong room at the right time. She quiet, resolute and strong.
I love how Ms. Dau weaves in past characters! Definitely impacts the readers. Well done Ms. Dau! Well done!

(2.75) I wanted to love it but this fell super flat for me. The found family/friendships were great. And despite Reya making a really dumb decision in the prologue, I was on board with her being a strong FMC, working 2 jobs to take care of her son. Lo also wasn’t a bad MMC. He was about his business and his grandma. And that’s where it stopped for me. Their romance felt underdeveloped, which makes me sad because forced proximity is one of my fave tropes. And I don’t know if it’s because the author spent a lot of time narrating to us about their story but not showing it. I would have loved to see some of these conversations they had. Give us some playful and flirty banter. Hype up how desirable they seemed to one another. So by the time they got together I didn’t feel any chemistry between them. Also as a pet peeve her son was 2ish but the voice in which he spoke read a lot older and it bothered me every time we saw dialogue from him.

I enjoyed this book very much. Mel Dau continues to prove why they’re an auto-read author for me. Read the Room delivered all the things I love — forced proximity, opposites attract, found family, and a strong, relatable FMC. The chemistry felt natural, the emotional moments hit, and the story kept me engaged from start to finish. I didn’t want to put it down and will definitely be picking up anything this author releases next.

Reya had a trash AF mother but she did what she had to do to ensure she ended with a better hand than the one she was initially dealt- I loved everything about her character and how she handled all her situations. I also really liked Lo's character- he was just the right amount of unhinged and I really love that he was on his grown man ish when it came to relationships- even with Alexi's triflin behind. Their supporting cast of friends and family were equally as likeable and I really like how Mel wrote the "nice-nap" chapters and Mama Bee's interactions with everyone, including Alexi- that was pure comedy.
There were some unanswered questions like what happened to the second man in the room at the club, why did LaKeisha really come back around and who was the 3rd man that was unalived at the end?
Overall though, this was another good one from Mel that kept me locked into the storyline front start to finish.

3.5🌟🎧 Tsireya and Lo’Ak story was real cute and enjoyable. I was totally thrown off by the nice-napped but it made for a good plot.
I wish we got to read about the growth of Tsireya and Lo’Ak love story. One minute he was holding her hostage for her protection and the next he was falling in love with her.
I did enjoy how all the people that shitted on Tsireya got their just desserts and I loved that for her.
If you love a little kidnap, forced proximity, step dad of the year then this read will be a good time.

Everybody likes a little Nice-napping!! This was such a cute little read. It had so many different elements in it that made this a great read. I loved Joey in this story but Lo and Reya were so freaking cute. A step daddy story can never go wrong with me!

I wasn't crazy about this book. However, I absolutely loved how the whole concept of reading the room and how it was broken down. I'm still confused about how a two-year-old would grasp such an abstract concept. I felt like the plot was rushed, the pacing was off, and all the characters lacked dimension.

Mel Dau did it again. Where can I find a man like Lo? 😮💨 His love for Tsireya was intentional, protective, and full of heart. His grandma was funny af, and I loved how Lo and his crew embraced Tsireya’s son and taught him how to read the room, a lesson that really stayed with me about knowing when to leave (or enter) certain spaces.
Tsireya’s mother was absolutely disgusting, but the balance of humor kept it real — Carlos’ mom gave me a chuckle, and Angela a.k.a. can’t get right. Once again, Mel Dau’s bipolar pen didn’t miss, and I caught that nod to our cousin Jahquel J. Big girl energy. Warm, funny, and emotionally honest ! Read the Room is a must-read.

Awesome Read
This storyline was epic! Lakesha was a horrible mother, and never deserved Reya's loyalty. Tsireya was one of the sweetest and innocent people you would meet. Meeting Mama Bee and working kept her afloat. Having Lucas in her life made her work harder. Lo'ak was a hard working man that knew his worth. He knew that Alexi wasn't his one. Moving on from her priority. Meeting T'sireya was love instantly. Regardless of the circumstances, she loved him from day one. Their family dynamic made everything so much easier for them both. The love and chemistry was beautiful. He and Sully protecting their families made perfect sense. This was a remarkable read! Job well done!

Lo'ak can get it! That man is so damn sexy. Not only that, he doesn't play about his loved ones. Reya was a good girl who was dealt a bad hand by her trifling mama. However, she remained steadfast and immovable to make something shake for her and her son.
Witnessing something at her job, put her on Lo's radar. Unbeknownst to both of them, they had two people in common...Jedi and Ma.
Lo went full press and maintained the pressure. Man this story was so good!! I promise you that I'm reading every room that I walk in.

Loved!
I felt like this was a little different for Mel Dau without crossing barriers. But thats what we love about her writing ✍️ . Then, the book hyperlinked "Shameless Love" was in the similar vein of street lit with the characters making a cameo 👌🏾.
I had been snickerin and laughing the entire time I'd been reading this book!! This lady has a way with words!
Now, Lo’ak Jordan 😍! When he wasn't nice-napping women, saving & rearing toddlers, he was dropping gems like:
“In life, you have to read the room to one, understand if it’s a room you need to be in, and two, how to conduct yourself within the room.
There are some rooms that you don’t belong in and shouldn’t be in. It could be because you’ve outgrown it or you’re not quite ready for it.
There are rooms that you are not ready to be in, but that is not to say that you will never be ready for them. Sometimes, you just have to chill in the waiting room until it’s your turn.

Lo'ak and Reya!!
Lo'ak and Reya connected when she witnessed something that she wasn't supposed to. Lo'ak had her nice-napped for that reason. The more time that they spent together, the more they became attracted to one another. Feelings developed, and I enjoyed their banter and the chemistry that came as a result of those feelings. I loved the family bond that was formed between Lo, Reya and Reya's son, Lucas, as well as Joey and Ethan. Mama Bee was another character that was a integral part of the book whom I loved, and I enjoyed the part she played in Lo'ak's life. I couldn't stand Alexi and the rest of the band of characters who formed an alliance against Lo'ak and Reya. Lo'ak and Reya
Lo'Ak is in the streets with a few businesses and takes care of his grandmother. She has an inhome day care, and one of the children that attends knows and likes Lo'ak.
Tsireya is a single mother that works multiple jobs. Her path in life started out rough with an underage, uncaring mother. She was raised by her grandmother, but circumstances landed her I. The care of her mother, eventually.
While living with her mom, she was placed into a situation that changed the trajectory of her life. She ever goes off to college, but gets pregnant. Fast forward, she is a single mother, now working two jobs.
While at one of her jobs, she sees something that she isn't supposed to. This puts her in the sights of Lo'ak. Once Lo'ak sees her, things change for him. He goes into protective mode once realizing who her son is.

Lo'Ak is in the streets with a few businesses and takes care of his grandmother. She has an inhome day care, and one of the children that attends knows and likes Lo'ak.
Tsireya is a single mother that works multiple jobs. Her path in life started out rough with an underage, uncaring mother. She was raised by her grandmother, but circumstances landed her I. The care of her mother, eventually.
While living with her mom, she was placed into a situation that changed the trajectory of her life. She ever goes off to college, but gets pregnant. Fast forward, she is a single mother, now working two jobs.
While at one of her jobs, she sees something that she isn't supposed to. This puts her in the sights of Lo'ak. Once Lo'ak sees her, things change for him. He goes into protective mode once realizing who her son is.
They are now in close proximity, and feelings change and grow.

I told myself to stop reading this author so that’s on me but from the prologue on down it was just one half thought after another. Reya is product of a broken home and is described as intelligent. That intelligence is then subverted so she willingly has a baby by a man that doesn’t want the baby, while she is in school and for WHATEVER DUMBASS REASON she has the baby, drops out, gets on sect. 8 and im supposed to believe there nothing but orbeez rolling around in her head?! This also wasn’t a romance like not one romantic thing happened in the damn book. That proposal was sickening, the profession of love was idiotic because again nothing happened and I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that two year olds don’t talk like that.

Mel Dau has done it again!!
I got a book that mentioned all of my favorite people and fell in love with a new person, Mama Bee!!
Reya and Lo’s love story was definitely not love at first sight due to a nice-napping. Mel Dau definitely loves writing about a friendly kidnapping and I’ve loved reading every one of them!
It was so cute when he shot is shot and left her stuck and from there it was a waiting game. Reya is definitely is peace and Lo is definitely her protector.
Oh and all the drama in this book will keep you entertained and may have you throw or drop your kindle or iPad, cause I did lol!!!
Definitely add this book to your TBR cause you will not be disappointed!

I've finished reading and I've actually taken the time to read the synopsis. Yeah I wouldn't have gathered that nice-napping happened in this story simply based on the synopsis, so I'm glad that I went in blind.
Lo'ak is a man. A good man. Even when he harms people, I still see him as a good, multi-faceted man. Plus the people that he harms, well that's justice ya know. Because I don't like Tsireya's mom. Tsireya is another character that I do not fault. I would've responded with cluelessness as well because IDC that your men say you're a good guy, I don't know you but thanks for letting me stay in your house for a bit 🙂↔️ but yes love a good nice-napping where the FMC is treated well and a relationship ensues between the MCs.
