Isang upuang hilakbot.

There's more to this silent graphic novel. Hindi dapat palampasin.

Silent graphic novel that will keep people talking? Eto na ‘yon!!

You can also read my review here!

Ang Pista is a silent wordless full color graphic novel written by Andoyman and illustrated by Kube, published by Avenida.

It follows a journalist, drained and exhausted from her work, who stumbles upon an invitation to Hiwaga Beach Resort. The promise? “Free food and accommodations!” Who wouldn’t be tempted by that? But of course, nothing is ever as simple or as safe as it seems.

I was lucky enough to grab my copy of Ang Pista during PICOF last July (and even got it signed!). A successful budol by @manunulatmambabasa 😁

But before anything, a heads up: this book is for mature readers only. Expect blood, violence, and body horror, with images that can be disturbing if you’re not prepared.

🩸 At first, I thought I’d struggle with a wordless graphic novel. But honestly, Kube’s vivid illustrations carried the story so powerfully that I didn’t feel lost at all. Every panel felt alive, every frame speaking louder than words, and from there, Andoyman’s storytelling brilliance shone through.

Yes, there’s gore, but it isn’t just for shock value. The horror reflects the real dangers and struggles that journalists, especially women, face in a corrupt male dominated society. It also shows the danger of blindly following politicians, and how power can easily turn sinister when people surrender their judgment. Some scenes left me unsettled, even shivering, but that’s exactly what made the story so effective.

🩸This book is yet another testament to how incredible Filipino creators are. Ang Pista is bold, haunting, and unforgettable. Don’t miss out, grab yourself a copy if you can.

It gives major Shake, Rattle & Roll vibes. If you remember Aswang with Manilyn Reynes, I initially thought it would be like that. But after reading the story, it was something else.

This is a silent graphic novel with elements of gore and horror, dominated by striking red and black visuals. With no dialogue or text descriptions, it leaves the interpretation entirely up to the reader. The magic lies in the fact that no two people will give the same reflection of the story.

Personally, here’s my interpretation: As the protagonist struggled with the stress of a toxic workplace, she came across an enticing invitation to a resort offering free food and accommodations. Little did she know, horror was waiting for her. Hoping to escape the nightmare of her workplace, she found herself in a place even more terrifying. She longs to escape, but she never truly can. Forever.

A book that needs to be seen to be understood. Each page had a contribution. No moment or detail was wasted. A wonderful read that deserves so many more readers.
