A sad example of how snooty people only see what is on the outside. Caroline was injured when the family was returning from London and passing over swollen river, bridge gives way and her parents, brother, sisters and several servants all died. She was rescued by kind stranger. Twelve years she’s almost shunned because of scar on her face and hand from broken window, in the garden at a ball she is cornered by three cruel “Ladies” and Duke Fredrick hears and scolds them for being so rude. As he is trying to calm, of course they are caught and are married. Neither wanted it but as she thought she was cursed and he saw the marriage his parents had, wanted no part of it. So they decided on marriage on paper only, but you know how that goes!
This is a easy read story which does have two attempted murders. Duke Frederick assisted Caroline when she was being bullied. They ended up alone and unchaperoned and when people saw them, Frederick felt he must offer marriage. It became a marriage of convenience which slowly developed into love. However, there were forces working against their happiness and this threatened their lives. Will they discover the culprit before it is too late? I liked the light-hearted comments from Frederick's you feel brother. At times, his witty intervention changed the atmosphere in the story.
Caroline was the only surviving member of her family in a carriage accident and was left with some permanent scars due to carriage glass. and her aunt Olivia took her into her home. When at a ball due to a compromised situation she and the duke Federick marry and though he was very happy with her she has lived with rumors of being cursed so much she believed it herself. Due to an irate lady there developed serous dangers to both her and Federic but when all is resolved they find their hea
Duke Frederic has no wish to marry.. but he is caught in the Garden at the ball saving Lady Caroline from the unpleasant ladies talking about her scar & a curse. He does the honorable thing with no wish except convenience..but it seems someone is sending Lady Caroline gifts of tea & a tragedy nearly takes place twice. She is saved by her dear Husband & he fights to put the pieces together.. Love returns…
The story and plot were fun and lovely, however, there seems to be a LOT of em-dash use, and used incorrectly. Some could be stylistic, but I feel like many of the sentences didn’t need the em-dash and some grammar-wise didn’t call for them, so it was quite distracting to read. Also, for the Kindle, the layout was double-spaced between paragraphs which made it harder to read.
I truly enjoyed reading Caroline and Fredric's 'haunting' courtship. Linfield wields a lyrical pen with beautiful figurative language. I found the supporting roles real and humorous, the tragedy, moving, and the curse, a constant shadow controlling Caroline's whole world. I love a hard fought for, happily ever after.
What a wonderful story. Poor Caroline thought she was cursed, but it turned out that Frederic was the person who saved her. So, it must have been fate that brought them back together again. Great characters and well written. Ms Linfield has done it again with this great story.
A delightful tale of unexpected love found while battling a curse that never really existed. The story was nicely based in the characters claimed my interest and sympathy.
This was really a good book! At first, I thought the Duke was kind of self-centered and On feeling. He did a nice thing though. I liked how they got to know each other in their marriage.
I had a couple deja vu moments while reading about the water rescue and again with the delivered contents to make tea. I'm pretty sure I've read those in other books before. That's my reason for 4* in stead of 5.
This is a heart warming story when two people with tragic past come together and heal each other. But there are those that only want to tear their them apart.
