Emmanuel Love is a weakness. You either kill it or it will kill you. I’ve been in love once, and that’s what I did. I killed it. I’ve managed to avoid the weakness throughout my entire life. And then I saw her. A ghost from my past, very much alive and right in front of me. When she tries to flee from my grasp, I hold tighter. Because dead or alive, Evie is mine.
Evie I’ve spent my life being put on display. Beautiful is a word I’ve heard a million times. Do I believe it? No. I might be shiny on the outside, but the inside… is a dark, scarred, bruised place. When I wake up to a cartel boss looming over me, his jaw clenched tight and his eyes darker than the emptiness I feel, my first instinct is to reach out and comfort him. That’s when I realize my mistake. But it’s the one word he utters that has my skin crawling. “Who?” And I know he knows. He knows my secrets. Emmanuel Lopez can see all of me and he’s not disgusted by the ugliness he finds there…

I absolutely love reading Kylie Kent books and I was really excited for this one after meeting the characters in the Owning Vegas series. But sadly it ended up being one of my least favorites from Ms. Kent. I felt like there were a lot of revelations that were glossed over too much and it made it feel like there was too much happening. Also trying to play out this story parallel to the three previous books just didn't work in my opinion. It felt like things were skipped over when really it was just something that had happened in a previous book. So really this says it's a spin-off but I don't think it can easily be read without reading the previous books.
To say I’m disappointed would be an understatement… I’ve liked the other books I’ve read from this author but this book was a total flop.. 😒 Don’t get me wrong there were parts I loved like how unhinged the MMC was for the FMC but overall the storyline was very juvenile and rushed through..
I was so excited for this story. Unfortunately it fell flat for me halfway in. I feel fhe book could've been shorter because most of it didn't pertain to the storyline. Evie annoyed me throughout the book with her hot and cold. Their main plot was Evie's pageant history and that was very anti climactic, same with Laura's story. I wish it would've focused more on that than him convincing her to be together. The book had so much potential, but i felt I was reading the same books again because it starts at Louie and Charlotte's story.
I pre-ordered this book with my own money, and WAS NOT given an ARC copy... not sure why goodreads thinks I was.
This isnt a review I wanted to write, and Im in the minority here, but unfortunately I really didnt like this book. Im extremely disappointed. I have loved E and Evie since His Kingdom and was really really looking forward to this book, so much so that I requested the day off work on release day, knowing I would want to read it all in one sitting.
I liked the beginning and really felt for E with his HORRIBLE parents and being forced into a life he didn't want. And dang did I really feel bad for Evie too, her life is something that no one should ever have to deal with! But then after like 200-ish pages everything went downhill for me.
Evie was soo hot and cold with E most of the book. She didnt admit her feelings until 85%, and even at the very end going into her wedding she was questioning her decision. I tried to have grace and understand where she was coming from because of her truly terrible childhood/ past. But I just couldnt. She was only nice to him or wanted him around on her terms (so when she was in trouble/ needed support or 🍆), and it came off very selfish to me.
Plus she was all offended by the bad things he did, but Charlotte and even E himself warned her that he was dangerous and really ran a cartel, and she slept with him anyways. So... dont go getting all mad when he does exactly what cartel bosses do 🤷🏻♀️ Although I will say, killing innocent teenagers was even a bit much for me... and I typically dont struggle with morally gray/ black. I had zero problem when he shot his mother!
It was 150 pages too long, and yet the end was rushed. And I HATED the twist ending. I dont even understand how a book that long could have a rushed ending... but here we are.
I almost DNFd this multiple times, but wanted to know the ending. And for that reason, and that reason only is this 2⭐️ for me.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This book had so much potential. But the pageant storyline didn’t really go anywhere and the meeting with her mother, just anticlimactic. She dropped a bombshell and it was brushed over in the final chapter. I liked the characters but there wasn’t really a storyline.
Evie and Emmanuel. He instantly fell in love with her as she looked like his dead girlfriend. I didn’t feel fully engaged with either of the characters
I was expecting this to be completely dire. I read the Owning Vegas books when I had Kindle Unlimited and they ranged from 'Good god who thought it was a good idea to publish this?' to 'Well, it's not great but it is readable... just about!' and I was glad I hadn't paid good money for any of them and they were all swiftly deleted from my Kindle and returned to Amazon. I was surprised that series didn't include the stories of the character Emmanuel and Evie, as to be fair they really were the most interesting characters in the whole series, which was the only reason that prompted me to read 'their story' when I was looking for some mindless drivel to fill a few hours.
Both characters are gloriously unhinged for various reasons, the male lead - Emmanuel is a morally bankrupt psychotic individual who uses murder as a negotiation device. There is very little to like about this character and yet oddly you find yourself rooting for him on occasions. There is more to the character of Evie and her backstory is a past which is totally horrific, which has left her mentally scarred. When Emmanuel learns of the details of this past he deals with it by going on a killing spree, eradicating all the people in Evie's past who abused her. A lot of the book includes the plotlines of the previous series but told from the perspective of Emmanuel and Evie, which if you have read that series is more than a bit irritating as there is obviously a degree of repetition. However, because of how it is written it also reads as though it assumes you have previously read those stories, so if you haven't then some of the side plotlines could be considered a bit too vague and lacking substance, and would leave a new reader with questions as to what exactly is going on at times. As such it falls short somewhere between a true spin off and stand alone story and it degrades it more to a cynical money making exercise.
All in all, it's really not great. The big plot reveal is contrived and a little bit ridiculous. There is no discernable story and the way it is written is immature and repetitive yet despite its obvious flaws there was something - not much but something which I liked enough to not completely dismiss it as a complete waste of time. In conclusion not completely dire but not far off.
The last book on this series was so much better. This one was a big disappointment. The heroine was unlikable and annoying. Overdone on the hard to get mantra of not wanting to be with the h. At 35% of how the heroine treated the h of telling him oh he should play chicken with bullets but doesn't mean it was overdone in my opinion. The heroine was boring, whiny, and weak. The twin sister thing was predictable and the mom allowing the SA on the heroine was excused in the end. Don't care for this last book.
2.5 ⭐️. This one fell for me, it was so hard to get through because half the suspense or conflict was the exact same from the Owning Vegas series.. I wish the parts of this book that were parallel in time with the Owning Vegas series would have been half the amount it was in this book. That would have been much better. I almost DNF this book instead I skimmed like 30% of it.
Had high hopes for this book but the female lead was so annoying and constantly fighting against the male at every turn. There was no real romance or humor like in the past books. The book dragged so badly that I could not finish it. The others books by this author are pretty good but this book I wish I would have skipped.
I knew this was going to be good but it surpassed all my expectations! E was down so bad for Evie and he made sure she knew it whether she was ready or not. The man was the definition of obsessed. Evie gave as good as she got though, especially when he was trying to be controlling. These two had so much chemistry to go along with their equal measures of stubbornness.
There was trauma, violence, twists and love all tied up in a beautiful package. Best series spin off out there!!
I love an unhinged, obsessive man as much as the next girl but the difference between other MMCs is those guys don’t kill innocent women/children. I wasn’t a fan of Emmanuel and evie also annoyed me sometimes. She was so hot and cold with her feelings for him.
This was an okay read for me . I like morally grey MMC but not who orders his men to do whatever they want with innocent teenage girls before killing them. Like WTF ! and FMC not ok with all kills but too weak to give in easily for attraction/sex . Seriously!
I’ve been waiting for Evie and Emmanuel’s book since His Kingdom, and it did not disappoint!
Emmanuel is completely finished for Evie — he’s ready to take down anyone who’s hurt her, whether from her past, present, or future. He’s determined to protect her at all costs, and that level of devotion? Swoon-worthy.
What Evie went through in her past deeply affected how she saw herself, and that journey was beautifully written. It was so raw and emotional to witness her growth.
The relationship between Evie and her friends was so lovely to read, and I really enjoyed how Emmanuel shows his love for his friends. It’s both funny and heartwarming at the same time.
the last 30 pages of this book truly kind of ruined the magic of their wholeeeee dynamic like i was eating it up and then i put the plate down. the random twist was so weird and she was just like okay about it???? im still at a loss for words but take those 30 pages out and it wouldve been somewhat redeemable besides his extra curriculars that were disturbing (not cheating tho duh otherwise this would’ve be 0 stars)
I loved that he never lied to Evie. He was honest even with the hard and ugly stuff. I freaking loved him so much. Evie was great too, she definitely matched his energy.
I enjoyed their story, and the twists were fantastic. This book was long and worth every minute of every page. I couldn't put it down. I'm looking forward to the next gen books for sure especially Emilio's book. 😅
This Vegas series has been so great and Evie and E were the cherry on top!
At this point author Kylie Kent can automatically take my money on anything she writes. Looking for over the top alpha male that only has eyes for the female character look no farther than Dead or Alive. Evie and Emmanuel are that toxic love that fits just right. They know they each have their own flaws and personal demons to navigate. Evie sees all of Emmanuel "E's" flaws and is still drawn to him knowing she would be telling any of her girlfriends to run the other way.
And Mr. Emmanuel Lopez is no golden boy he is down and dirty, rough and polished at the same time. When he sets his eyes on Evie who looks like his teenage girlfriend who he knows is no longer among the living he knows she is his one way or another.
This has probably turned out to be my favorite so far by Kylie Kent and let me tell you that is something coming from me because her Valentino men have been my go to men for almost 2 years now then she had a crossover of Hockey/Mafia men that I literally had to buy the special editions that set me back a few bucks. I normally do not buy physical copies of books unless I love every moment I have read from the eBook. and Mr. Emmanuel Lopez is about to be bought in paperback as well because this had me hooked with every twisted turn until the last page.
If you have TW/Content issues please read the list the author provides this touches on a few subjects that could be difficult for some readers to read. Don't take it lightly your mental health is important.
To Kylie Kent (If you ever read review) let me just say whether it be Valentino, Williamson, Lopez you have me hooked to your storylines. The more I read from you its the perfect escape in a crazy world. Thank you for creating the writing world you have. Now I'm ready for the second generation because you create something special with each family you write.
I was so excited for this book as Emmanuel was already my favourite out of the Vegas’ men, so I wish I could give the book more stars!
The first half was great, while for the second half I just wish we had more passion and angst. The story had more killing than most, but somehow I didn’t get the passion behind them? It’s clear Emmanuel was killing for Evie, but the feeling didn’t carry through the pages for me, and just felt like one of the jobs Emmanuel could be doing anyway.
Also I get Evie’s worries of not being lovable, but I feel we dwelled on that a bit too long, and when she got to the part of admitting her love for Emmanuel it was just thrown in the middle of an argument? Again I missed the passion of the two coming together and admitting/ accepting their love. It felt a bit more like a foregone conclusion, with people just accepting that’s the way it was going to go but didn’t feel they were in it 100%.
Evie just ended up accepting it, and I’m still not 100% sure Emmanuel would have bothered if she didn’t look like Laura. In comparison Louie and Charlotte have a much more believable love story, where they actually think the other “hangs the moon for them”, although it all happened in like 3 days😅
Overall I enjoy all of Kilye Kent’s books and this was no different, but I had such high expectations from Emmanuel, and maybe that’s part of the letdown!
Now Emmanuel is what you would call the definition of a man willing to do absolutely anything and everything for the woman he loves. When he first meets Evie he believes he is seeing a ghost from his past- that being a girlfriend who he tragically lost years ago but he soon came to realise this was not the case.
From the moment he met Evie that was it for him, and he was always very straight about his intentions. Were some of his methods questionable? Absolutely, he was a morally grey man to his core but he never hid this fact.
Evie was fierce and feisty FMC, who most certainly wasn’t afraid to give E a piece of her mind. She came to realise quite quickly that she was his sole focus and there was nothing she could do to change that. Evie suffers from insomnia due to past trauma and Emmanuel does everything in his power to ensure those who caused her pain in the past are permanently removed.
I enjoyed reading about this couple, their chemistry was evident and couldn’t be denied. There was a few little twists and turns as well.
Thank you to the author who provided this e-arc from my honest thoughts 💭
Good read over all. The story wasn't what I was expecting in regards to who Evie was. The synopsis made it seem like Evie is a girl from E's past and maybe that she was hiding from him or staying away for some reason. That was not what happened - although Evie does have a connection to a girl from E's past. There are a crap to of touch her and die moments in typical obsessed alphahole fashion. I loved that Evie went head to head with E and put him in his place. The spice is good and there's a tenderness that is so sweet. We got to see a little of E with Jazzy and I can only imagine how he's going to be in her book. The teaser was good!
I love me a good mafia romance and Kylie Kent knows how to do them!
I love Emmanuel and Evies relationship from the start. The way Emmanuel is devoted to her and she almost always trusts him. I wish I would have read the Owning Vegas books, but it was good even though I haven't yet!
If you love a very possessive and obsessive MMC, read it!
Kylie has done it again. I am OBSESSED with Emmanuel and Evie! I love that Emmanuel is the big bad cartel boss with everyone but let's his soft side come out with Evie and the way that he does what he needs to, to make her feel safe 🤌🏻
Meh. I finished it, yay for that. I like a good book that gets right to the good stuff… but this one didn’t do that, and then had the most lame lead up to. No build up, just one second of “not happening” then it happened. The author lacked detail, scenes/moments were lacking all the things, I’m not sure what she filled this book with, a lot of mindless words. I was able to finish it, but just can’t recommend it. I save my 1 stars for my DNF’s, so this gets 2 from me.
3.5 stars. I was so excited for this book. I had it preordered and started reading it right when it was delivered to my kindle but it was kind of a let down. I just read His Kingdom so the first few chapters were kind of annoying since they are almost exact chapters from His Kingdom but just a different POV. The fmc was hot and cold and dragged out telling the mmc her history for way too long. I have read a lot of mafia books so I don’t have an issue with the whole murder/torture thing in books but I felt like there were a couple times with the particular people that got murdered that I really didn’t like. Lastly, I felt like the ending was rushed and anticlimactic.
Ngl this was not as good as Kylie’s other stories. Still a decent read though. I liked the fmc’s relatability (her internal battle with always needing to look her best).
