Mind & Matter

Rate this book
I used to believe none of this was real. That the world of power and magic, and the men who haunted my dreams, were fragments of a broken mind.

Now I know better. The scars on my body are proof. And the men who swore to protect me are breaking under their own secrets.

Ezra’s loyalty cuts like a blade.
Rowan’s strength tempts me to lose control.
Cayden’s kindness hides something far darker.
And the Architect, my enemy, my obsession, sees through every lie I tell.

This world runs on obedience, contracts, and blood.
And for the first time, I’m not sure I want to follow the rules.

If freedom costs me everything, so be it.

Because I’m done being anyone’s experiment, and I’ll burn the castle down before I let them own me again.

This is a reverse harem, slow-burn novel with MM. It contains numerous triggers and is not suitable for sensitive readers. You can find the triggers listed on my website. JustAPotato[dot]com.

So many thoughts are spinning inside my head after finishing this 2nd book.

First of all the world created is so phenomenal and Kate brings the world alive with every written word. So fantastic how she is with words!

I enjoyed the development between the characters, Quinn and her men. Also bringing in the Architect brought more intrigue to the story.

Kate is so detailed and meticulous in her writing, you can only admire that!

And without spoiling… the ending has affected, touched me so much and left with even more questions, that I needed some time to write this down. I absolutely loved it and I’m looking forward to read the next book in this series!! 😆.

Kate Messick had done it again. Book 2 in this series had me on the edge of my seat. I planned on reading this slowly but ended up reading it in 2 sittings. The character development, friendships, and growing bonds flow so smoothly. This book gives more insight to each of our MC pasts, feelings, and struggles making it easy to love and relate with them. The ending has you wanting book 3 immediately. Still so many unanswered questions I can't wait to see what gets answered and where we go from here. I highly recommend getting this whole series and reading it in one go.

Kate Messick's Mind and Matter took me by surprise and didn't let up, it starts off delicately, even cautiously, but quickly becomes compulsive as scars, contracts, and control take center stage, with each page, the suspense grows bigger, propelled by power systems that appear elegant on the surface but terrible underneath! Quinn's reluctance to remain subservient is arresting, and her rage feels visceral, even proprioceptive, as if you can feel it in your own muscles, this book is addictive from the way that it pushes you to keep going even when it touches you in every emotion possible, the cliffhanger hits like an uppercut, stunning and brutal, and redefines all that magnificence that came before!
.
The men around Quinn operate as pressure points, Ezra's allegiance is pure and deep, Rowan's power threatens collapse, Cayden's tenderness veils decay, and the Architect watches with frightening sharpness! Their ties build slowly and under strain, and the tension develops without a hastened settlement. The MM spice fibers delivers heat and structure giving the relationships a more complicated texture, that was really wonderful!!! Affection, envy, and fear are in uneasy alignment, keeping every connection sharp and intriguing, I just loved every scene in this book especially the spice scenes, they were chef's kiss!
.
The prose is remarkably pristine and poised, it suppresses emotion until secrets are revealed, at which point it bursts strongly, the pace really picks up here compared to the first book, and the action stacks higher without losing organization. Politics centered on tethers, contracts, and intention builds the stakes and makes every pledge feel irreversible! The plot incorporated with betrayal, misdirection, and sacrifice swims across every chapter, the suspense is relentless, and the repercussions are catastrophic!
.
This is an astonishing pressure vessel, it devastated me and left me thinking about Quinn and her decisions long after the last page! The emotional affect is expensive, constructed, and impossible to shrug off. Nothing resets easily and the reluctance to soothe is exactly the reason it works, the ending blasts with meticulousness, leaving the series on a knife edge! This book won't let you down if you're looking for an addicting, passionate romance that values suffering, power, and autonomy!!!

I enjoyed this book more than book one, that for sure. BUT can they just fucking talk to each other? OMG! Like COMMUNICATE! But I do like that all the boys seem to be starting to work a bit more together and helping Quinn figure out life a lot more. I’m also loving her growth through this and the confidence she is getting with this found family.

Slow burn is fucking right. Like, does no one want to make a move? Quinn needs some full-on lovin’. Seriously, she has waited long enough. Somebody has got to step up 😆! Also, I am fully invested now after that ending. I seriously need to know what happens.

Wow! The world building is fantastic, love all the details, really elevates the story. It’s also really refreshing to read so different. There is really good character development for the male characters as they overcome their differences for Quinn. Their chemistry and camaraderie is slow burn and enjoyable. That ending though! Wow..

Dang girl can’t win… I need to know what happens next. Just a drugged dream, or was it all real

The guys are giving me heart palpitations. Also, I’m getting a weird Alice in Wonderland vibe, which I love.

Noooooo!!! I can't believe that ending, what a cliffhanger! This series has just sucked me in, its unlike anything I've ever read before. Amazing world building by this author, the characters are really well fleshed out. Book two certainly moves at a faster pace than book one, but we had a whole world to build and characters to get to know in book one. I can't wait for the next book, I need to know what happens!

**ARC Review Incoming**

Thank you to Kate Messick and Booksprout for my copy of this book. Below is my honest review of the read.

Ok, first things first…. A few points to note before jumping into this review:

1. This is book 2 of the Tethered by Temptation series - you absolutely must read Book 1 first or you will struggle to connect with the story.

2. There is a huge amount of world building in both books, with lots of characters, families, magical politics and much more which can get a bit overwhelming! Take your time! You’ll need to concentrate. It is written in multiple POV with past and present intertwining.

3. The romance is extremely slow burn, like, you gota be in for the looonnngggg haul!

Now, in terms of my feels having read this book I would say that it wasn’t quite what I expected but overall I did enjoy it.

The world & character/family building was immense!! Impressively detailed but a lot to take in and I found it quite complicated at times due to the multiple POV’s and timelines. There are also a lot of flashbacks/memories integrated within the timelines.

The slow burn romance was painful for me, it just took too long. I believe that has more to do with my personal preference than the actual story, too much of it and increased erotica could stray the reader from the main story but I needed it to be more balanced. It was a lot of information and I wanted a spicy reward that I didn’t get.

The story of the 4 MMC’s continues to grow and we learn how they cope with each other, including the awakening of the Architect.

The FMC spends a lot of time confused and making bad decisions in a bid to be independent only to need rescued by her harem of men, which I found frustrating.

I loved the setting being in Edinburgh, it added to the magic of the story! The family politics and the different types of magic were great and the twist/ending was on point!

The detail in this book is fantastic, the imagination and crossover into mental health topics and the promise of what is to come is great!

If you enjoy magical, immersive worlds that you want to commit to over a few books with a hint of romance this read is for you.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Mind & Matter is the second book in Messick's Tethered by Temptation series. This why choose, dystopian romantasy features Quinn, Alexander, Ezra, Cayden and Rowan. It picks up where the story leaves off in the first book so please read them in order.

Messick's world building and character development continues in this second installment. There is a lot to take in, and while you'll try to take it slow to fully absorb it all, the riveting storyline will keep pushing you forward, eager to learn what will come next.

Readers learn more about the characters - not just the primary characters, but also the secondary ones as well. This world is rife with politics and navigating those allegiances as well as those who may have ulterior motives. It is easy to question who can truly be trusted, but the answers may surprise you.

I loved learning more about Quinn and her men. Cayden has a complicated past that gives him a unique perspective on what Quinn is living. While he is not one to mess with, he truly comes across as her teddy bear. She can lean on him for anything, and he would do anything for her. Rowan is a beast of a man. He is a loyal soldier but his affection for Quinn and his devotion to her rivals his commitment to his family. Ezra is another complicated character. He is committed to his partner, Alexander, and their family but there is a pull to Quinn which he is keen to further explore. He will do things for her that he would not do for anyone else. Alexander is a fascinating one; he can see all but is sensitive to not using his power inappropriately. He knows Quinn is apprehensive when it comes to the Architect and he wants to meet her where she is. He very much wants her to see him for who he is as a man rather than his title or role.

I enjoyed that Quinn's relationships with these men gradually evolved from duos to triplets, and how they come together in times of strife. They are far from a well-oiled machine however they have the best of intentions along with a common goal.

The ending had me shook! It was definitely unexpected and I am eager to read the next installment. I would definitely encourage you to read this series if you enjoy slow burn romantasy stories with diverse characters and magic.

I received a gifted ARC of this book via Happily Booked PR and I am voluntarily writing this honest review. MIND AND MATTER is Book 2 in the TETHERED BY TEMPTATION series by Kate Messick. In this post apocalyptic dark fantasy, Quinn battles for control of her life while four dangerous men vie for her, her magic, and her power. This is a spicy, open door, first person, multi POV, dark romantasy with tropes that include why choose, slow burn, hidden identity, dark themes, found family, magical bonds, dystopian Scotland, mental health representation, morally grey men, MM romance, reverse harem, and trauma recovery. This book takes up exactly where DELUSIONS AND DESIRES ended, and it ends with a doozy of a cliffhanger. I still like all the main characters and the way the author is world building and developing the characters and the relationships between them. Quinn is trying to orient herself to a world that is very different from the one she grew up in, where technology has been replaced by magic and only a small percentage of the female population are able to have children. She is used to a world where people avoided her due to her oddity (having magic) and the belief that she is mentally ill, and she arrived in a world where she is highly desirable, not mentally ill at all, and not all men are honorable about the ways they wish to possess her, causing some very high stakes circumstances for her in her present and in her past. This story has the romance and spice, magic in a dystopian future, and danger to add the suspense, making it a really fun read. I love getting the different POVs for Quinn and her men. I am looking forward to seeing how this pans out for her as the story continues to develop. I recommend this series for readers who enjoy dark, dystopian, why choose/reverse harem romantasy. This book is part of a series and I do not recommend reading it before reading the first book in the TETHERED BY TEMPTATION series.

My dear God!!!!!

If you do not know that this is a 4 book series let and you just read this book and you have a book hangover and you do not know what to do with yourself let me tell you...

ITS A 4 BOOK SERIES!!!

Dear lord i cannot tell you how much hurt and pain i got from the ending of this book.....i was going crazy believing that the author was simply sadistic and left us with that ending....Be at peace by broken heart thank god is not the end!
I do not know what to tell about this book....
The book is a captivating and immersive read that I thoroughly enjoyed from beginning to end. The book is filled with action that keeps the pace exciting, while never sacrificing depth or meaning. Every scene feels purposeful, drawing you further into a richly crafted world that feels alive, complex, and endlessly fascinating.

One of the novel’s greatest strengths is its world-building. The magical world the author creates is vivid and imaginative, with its rules, cultures, and history woven seamlessly into the story. Magic is not just a spectacle, but an integral part of the society, shaping how characters live, think, and interact. This attention to detail makes the setting feel believable and immersive.

The characters are equally intriguing—layered, flawed, and compelling. Their motivations and personal struggles add emotional weight to the story, making it easy to become invested in their journeys. Beyond the action and magic, the book also explores the political side of this world in a thoughtful and engaging way. The analysis of power, control, and ideology adds depth to the narrative and elevates it beyond a typical fantasy story.

Overall, it is an impressive blend of action, magic, and intellectual depth. It is a story that entertains while also encouraging the reader to think, making it a truly memorable and enjoyable read.

Oh no no no, the cliffhanger
Reminder that this is Book 2 of a 4 book series, so there may be some book 1 spoilers in my review. Absolutely loved this one, had to go re-read the end of the first one to recall where we left off exactly. Kate seems to write the most hilarious, misunderstood men. They can't do anything right sometimes it seems, but I have hope that they'll get there. There's a lot of action in this book, and we seem to learn a lot - I have a feeling a lot of it is going to come up later in the series too.

Quinn is struggling with her attraction to her unattainable friends. Cayden, her best friend refused to kiss her. Rowan is in conract with someone else (and she's awful). Ezra is in a relationship with her new friend Xan, and she can't have any of them. I love Kate's dual/multi POV format in these situations because I love hearing the characters inner dialog as the plot plays out. The architect is awake, and instead of approaching her as that, he approaches her as Xan, so she can get to know the real him. And Quinn has built him up in her head as this evil person. Now that Quinn's coming into her powers, everyone is after her either for a contract, a slave, or just to use her. She really doesn't know who to trust and as the book goes on, this gets her into some sticky situations - including just maybe another tether. She can't ask for help because she doesn't want to share that she doesn't know anything. And the guys aren't very forthcomign either, espeically with feelings conversation. And just when things are lookup up, disaster strikes, she lands in the hands of the enemy. And that's not even the cliffhanger - really it had me almost in tears!

Kate Messick is a chaos gremlin. She has to be to come up with this series. Mind and Matter is the second book in the series, and I liked it even better than the first. I had so much fun reading it. What I'm starting to recognize as Kate's trademark humor happens right from the start. I laughed my way through the entire book. The harem is still a confused, angsty mess, but things are getting better. I really enjoyed getting to know Alexander this time around. I liked him more than I expected to. Not only that, but I like all the guys. Now, if only they can get it together, that would be great. Quinn has progressed in leaps and bounds. She's starting to realize that this might not be her imagination, and instead of pulling back into her shell of self-doubt and blame, she's learning that not everything is her fault and is stepping out of her comfort zone. I couldn’t help but cheer her on.

There was a lot more backstory in this one. Not only do we get more from the guys, but there was also more info on the rest of the gang. The world-building is still excellent. I enjoyed getting a broader understanding of this world. The families are explained, and the magic is even better. Quinn is learning a lot. This book was high energy with a fast-paced plot. Something was always going on, whether that be cool magic, group meetups, bonding with the guys, or crazy attacks because apparently Quinn can't go anywhere. It was chaos.

Mind and Matter was epic! The story held on tight and didn't let go. The twists and turns were incredible; however, Kate did leave us on a cliffhanger. My jaw hit the floor. Tethered by Temptation is quickly becoming a favorite. A thousand and one stars! Read it!

This book (and series) are fantastic. It’s makes you think, without being overly complicated. Keeps you guessing at the connections and reactions and what will happen next. There is so much going on and happening at all times, it’s hard not to give spoilers.
Quinn has so many people who adore her, but her circle is well rounded. Brit and Everly offer support, safety in the form of zero expectations and just being there, being present whenever and for whatever Quinn may need them for. Moral support, butt kicking, or just people to complain to when everything is too much.
The men also bring similar but different things. Offering a variety of safety and protection, but also giving her confidence and confidants. They will always hype her up, and show/tell her that she can do anything she sets her mind to. It’ll just take some time and practice.
Quinn is also gaining confidence here. She’s making friends and finally learning to trust people. Albeit that trust takes a while to earn, but that’s understandable. And it makes the people who do earn her trust, appreciate it that much more.

The ending absolutely crushed me. I’m so mad at the author for the cliffhanger she punched us with. I cannot wait to see how that all pans out. Going to need the next book ASAP. PLEASEEEE.

Rating:⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
After just reading the first one this second one blew my mind so much more. When I read the blurb on this one and it said, " if freedom cost me everything, so be it. Because I'm done being anyone's experiment, and I'll burn the castle down before I let them own me again."
I will say that in this book I loved the way the author developed the relationships between Quinn, Rowan, cayden, and Ezra. It was so amazing to see them blossom. The architect brought more of a spin to the book which was absolutely phenomenal because you wanted to hate him but then there were certain things about him that you just couldn't hate that you really kind of were like I don't really know maybe I like him a little bit.
This book was just absolutely amazing there are not enough good things I can say about it. The author really did a phenomenal job again with the characters, she did a phenomenal job with the world building. Overall, book one and two in the series was absolutely amazing and now that I figured out there's a book three I'm going to binge read that one as well.

If you haven’t read the first book then please do so, these are meant to be read in order.

I absolutely loved being back in this world. This story picks up right where the first one ended.

In this second book the relations with Quinn & her guys develop. Xan & Ezra have Quinn in their private quarters teaching her to understand & learn how to control her powers & develop an understanding of tethers. At one point the sexual tension leaves Quinn so sexually frustrated she end up in Rowans arms. This reminds Quinn how much she has been missing seeing her friends & also pushes Cayden to recognise & accept his relationship with Quinn. Although he’s not fully committed due to Cayden’s history with his family.

Whilst the relations are being built in this story between the men, it is not without its action. Quinn has been asked to meet the other families & possibly other suitors in this new world. Quinn is later kidnapped & it’s up to her men to find her before a war breaks out.

This one leaves you with questions throughout & ended with a cliff hanger that has you questioning is this all real or she really just imagine it…. I look forward to the next one 😊

With book 2 we pick up right where we left off with Quinn and her men-only now the Architect is awake. The addition of Xan being awake and finally meeting Quinn adds a two against two dynamic in their bids for her attention and affections with Xan & Ezra on one side and Rowan and Cayden on the other. Ezra is ever loyal to Can from their shared traumatic pasts but is falling for Quinn, Rowan continues to train Quinn and is head over heel and trying to figure out how to tell her of his accidental tether, Cayden's still Q’s bestie but also full of jealousy over the others spending time with her while he grapples with his very dark cult filled family & past decisions because of it, and the Architect/Xan begins to personally train Quinn while also dealing with his tether and becoming obsessed with her. She still see him as her sometimes enemy, her obsession, and her newest desire. At a pit fight and then a major event she is almost stolen by body snatchers and a war is brewing over who gets to control her. We end on a huge cliff hanger that sets up book three to kick off with us once again questioning our narrator and what is truly real. Can’t wait!

A gripping, emotional, beautifully crafted romance that sticks with you

Mind & Matter by Kate Messick is one of those books that pulls you in quietly and then absolutely wrecks you—in the best possible way. Messick blends emotion, chemistry, and raw vulnerability into a story that feels deeply human and impossible to put down.

The characters shine brightest here. They’re flawed, tender, messy, and brave in all the ways that matter. Their connection builds slowly, layer by layer, until the tension finally snaps in a way that’s both swoony and scorchingly satisfying. The emotional intimacy is just as powerful as the physical spark, creating a romance that feels earned and real.

Messick’s writing is addictive: smooth, impactful, and full of moments that hit right in the chest. She tackles big feelings with sincerity, but never loses sight of the warmth and the chemistry that make romance so compelling.

If you love character-driven stories, heartfelt growth, tension that tightens beautifully, and romance that balances sweetness with spice, Mind & Matter is a standout read.

4 🌟 and ready for the next one! Book 2 of this series is still a slow burn, but we have some nice teasing scenes and a couple spicier ones that will keep you turning pages. 1.5🌶 Our fmc still technically has her V card unpunched still at the end of the book.
This time, you're in the fantasy world throughout the story and almost forget that she is also a human girl without magic. As she slips into the fantasy, and she gets more comfortable and confident, and there are now 4 mmc's, and all of them have things to love!
I personally am an Ezra girlie right now, but time will tell Wink Wink.
I found the writing to be less confusing and read at good pace and rhythm. The story still remains to be unique, and I am excited to keep going, especially since the last 3 pages leave you in a cliffhanger with a pouty face.
Check for your trigger warnings, but I personally didn't find anything triggering.
I can honestly recommend this book to those who have open minds and are okay with the multiple personalities aspect.

I’ve just finished this and I want to cry. I feel like my heart’s been torn out and stomped on by the author. It was going so well until it wasn’t and then the action ramped up and up.
We learn more about tethers, how to break them and the politics of contracts and intentions. The Architect, Xan, chooses to ignore this and pays the price for trying to keep Quinn for himself and Ezra. I still love Cayden and Rowan, and oh boy the things that Cayden’s Prophet made him do and the results were both awful and heartbreaking.
I love that the guys’ disparate relationships with Quinn, and what happens to her, lead to them learning how to work together, and appreciate that the others are there to stay and even develop into a friendship in the case of Cayden and Rowan.
That ending just broke me though, I’m on the verge of throwing my kindle at the wall and having a tantrum, while screaming “it’s not fair”
Oh and someone needs to kill the man with the coal black eyes!

I really, really love this series… I had been looking forward to this second book, and I loved every second of it, even the dramatic cliffhanger at the end. The constant push and pull between Quinn and her men, the fascinating worldbuilding, the men who don’t know how to share, the danger that’s constantly lurking, … Together it creates such a fascinating series that has it all: suspense, action, tension, lovely characters, twists and turns, spice (slow burn but getting there), ….

For me, this series reminds me a bit of other dystopian series that focus at least partly on the psychological aspect of people’s behavior once society collapses. The rise of cults, the battles for territory, the ways they deal with the lack of women, and so much more. I love these type of series, and this one ain’t any different. Seriously, back three can’t come fast enough! I desperately need to know what will happen after the way this second book ended.

All the action!
This was almost over before I even got started. At least it felt so!

Quin is learning how to live and survive in this new to her world. But not without complications.
Her best friend, Cayden, is with her every step of the way, while she wish they could be more. Rowan seems to be everywhere, knowing more about her than he should. Ezra is being confusing AF now that the Architect is awake. Not to mention, that she feels so attracted to those two, that it's painful to watch, as she willingly let them use her to repair their own relationship, not realizing what they are actually trying to tell her. SO much going on.
All the characters definitely comes with their own set of trauma to work through.

Uncertain times loom ahead and nothing is safe.

This is book 2 of 4 and can not be read alone.
It ends on a cliffhanger - one of the big drops for sure!
I adore the multiple POV and highly recommend this to lovers of RH romantasy.

I thought I was obsessed with this series after the first book…I was sorely mistaken! Oh my good golly my Kate! ***Insert all the shocked emojis here***
I loved watching the continuation of the budding relationships in this book two! The slow burn is killing me but the few spicy scenes were intense. My heart just breaks for the rollercoasters that these characters are going through together (and the ones they’re fighting alone). I loved watching all the training sessions and seeing the guys slowly become more affectionate and obsessed with the FMC.I also can’t wait to see if the shower of that one scene in the Alun goes anywhere….***insert eyebrow wiggles here***I am soooo glad this entire series was rewritten and I have the release dates for the next two books….I would hate to have to wait for an unknown amount of time! Gah this series though! Got me in a chokehold…those last few chapters just gutted me….i can’t wait to see how the author brings us into the next book!

OMG THAT FREAKING CLIFFHANGER!!! I mean the next book is available so I'm just being dramatic but still! Like omg! I'll be diving into the next book ASAP!
So far I am devouring this series and I'm OBSESSED! It's so good. All the Slow burn tension is delicious!! On top of that, the plot just keeps getting more and more intriguing.
She's getting in touch with her magic, and finally accepting magical world she's in. All while being heavily pursued by all the highest ranking families, because women are rare and she's extremely powerful, plus someone has it out for her.
You need to pick up this series if you're into Romantasy!

We are back with Quinn and this very emotional roller coaster will have you on the edge of your seat. It pulls you in and doesn’t let go. I absolutely love Quinn and her set of friends that has you walking a journey that is amazing and scary at times. We see relationships expand and the drama throughout the story is stunning. We have so much action and there are lies and betrayals throughout. Who can we trust, who is really the enemy are some of the questions that plague us as we journey through the story. The descriptions paint a picture that you can easily visualize. Near the end of the book things really ramp up. We are left at times with more questions that I absolutely cannot wait to find out the answers to. There is a shocking ending to this book that has me absolutely excited to see what happens next. An absolute must read.

Wait, noooo!!! Oh my gosh what a cliffhanger! I have really enjoyed reading book 2 in this series! There is a ton of world building along with politics and family lines, it can be a lot to take in but it is so good.
Xan finally woke up and my goodness he made some terrible choices. A few led to way more problems than necessary but most were solved or worked out. Quinn can be frustrating at times but if you really think about it, that still is right on point with her character. She isn't supposed to be reliable as a narrator and the ending alone proves that.

I loved seeing how all 4 men interacted with her and each other. I cannot wait to see if they all form a family unit with Quinn, I believe they will. The ending was not at all what I was expecting. I am completely thrown for a loop and cannot wait until the next book is out!
