The Highlander's Lady of Loch and Sea

Rate this book
A siren steals a warrior’s heart—and maybe his soul—in this dangerously seductive Highlander romance from USA Today bestselling author Heather McCollum.

Cyrus Mackinnon has always had a way with the lasses. But beneath his roguish grin lies the heart of a warrior—and a destiny to be the chief of his clan. By wedding his sister to the Macqueen chief, he’s forged a strong alliance among the Isle of Skye clans. Until a lovely stranger with eyes the color of the sea disrupts the celebrations to warn Cyrus that his brother-in-law is on par with the devil himself…

Laria Macqueen knows that none of the clans of Skye are safe from her cousin’s sinister plotting—least of all her people. And if she can’t stop the wedding, she’ll have to do the seduce Cyrus…and kill him. But while bedding the battle-hardened warrior is altogether satisfying, she hesitates once she has her dagger to his throat.

Now Cyrus is caught in the Macqueens’ secret war of attrition. With one wrong move, the fragile alliance will be shattered and Skye soaked in blood. And in the middle stands Laria, a siren who will either steal Cyrus’s soul…or lure them all to their deaths.

I am Heather McCollum, writer of 16th and 17th century Scottish romance full of adventure and intrigue, sprinkled with humor, history, and spice. Brawny Highlanders and feisty heroines are my favorite characters!

I am also a mom of three kids, dog-mom of one rescued geriatric golden retriever, and wife of one 6 foot 4 inch Highlander. When I’m not trying to help my kids make it through the day, baking things I see on The Great British Baking Show, or writing, I’m usually educating women on ovarian cancer (I’m a nine-year survivor).

I love kilted heroes, chai lattes, and eating buttered air-popped popcorn for dinner on Friday nights (my dog loves this one too).

Read: 2/8/26
Setting: 1544 Scotland, Isle of Sky
3.5 stars
Can be read as standalone

I can always count on HM to deliver a good highlander story and she didn't disappoint!

plot: Cyrus and his friends have worked toward peace since escaping an English prison together. They are determined to unite the Isle of Sky so they can stand against the English. Cyrus has just wed his sister to Laird Iain for this alliance, only to discover things might not quite be what they appear.

When his sister's wedding is interrupted by an otter and a hooded woman, who leaves a note warning his sister not to marry Laird Iain, Cyrus is determined to find her. Later, he mets a gorgeous masked woman who seduces and drugs him. He wakes up tied to a bed with a knife posed over his heart. The woman crying that she has no choice.

Laria has been the savior of the downtrodden. Her cousin can't stand any imperfections and cast out anyone scarred or deformed out of the clan. He has also murdered his own mother and brother. Unfortunately, Iain excels at playing the innocent and nobody believes her. Now, Iain is forcing her to kill Cyrus or her people will be punished, but Laria can't do it. She leaves Cyrus tied to the bed.

Cyrus is later able to track her to the Loch. He's shocked by her allegations. Cyrus does not know who to believe. Did he just wed his sister to a monster or is Laria crazy as her cousin suggest? One wrong move and he could destroy everything he and his friends have been working towards. Cyrus is determined to learn the truth. He also needs to save Laria and her band outcasts. Of course, the handsome highlander doesn't count on losing his heart to this water nymph.

liked:
1. Laria was a badass! I really liked her. She's courageous, strong, and loyal. She always puts the clans needs above her own.
2. Cyrus was yummy! Charming, but a good man. He hasn't had it easy. His own father traded him for his brother and then left him to rot in an English prison. So as a leader his confidence gets a little shaken when he thinks he might have failed his sister. He's a good man.
3. The sex scenes are steamy. These two sizzled together. 🥵
4. Iain makes a smart villain. If I didn't trust the h, I might have been fooled too. The man was talented at playing the innocent. All the while, he has been quietly murdering Cyrus's family and allies.
5. Eskre and Sophie were great additions to the story. Eskre is Laria's brother and the rightful heir. Unfortunately, Eskre was born an albino and his mother gave him away. He never grew bitter, but kept his kind heart. Sophie is Laria's grandmother. Laria escaped with her grandmother. She feared her cousin would murder the older woman because her mind was slipping sometimes. Sophie is still strong and loves her two outcast grandchildren.

dislike:
1. It was a stupid move to confront the villain with all of Laria's accusations, especially the part about Laira knowing where Iain's mother is secrerly buried. 🤦‍♀️. I would have preferred Cyrus to have some kind of strategy, but nope. Poor Laria has to to do all the intelligent thinking in the relationship. Luckily, Cyrus's wits improve as the story continues.

Conclusion: As far as HM books go, this wasn't her best, but it was still entertaining

Book review: Heather McCollum’s The Highlander’s Lady of Loch and Sea. Published by Entangled: Amara, with sincere thanks to Entangled Publishing and NetGalley for my gifted ARC.

There is a particular kind of comfort that comes from opening a Heather McCollum novel, and this third installment in the Brotherhood of Solway Moss series delivers that feeling in full. From the opening pages, I was pulled back into the rugged beauty of the Isle of Skye, where clan loyalties are fragile, danger is constant, and love is never simple. This book feels rich and layered, combining political tension, emotional vulnerability, and a romance that simmers before it truly burns.

Cyrus Mackinnon has always struck me as the charmer of the group, but here we see how much weight he actually carries. He’s a warrior trying to do right by his clan, his sister, and the future of Skye, even when every choice threatens to unravel the peace he’s working toward. Laria Macqueen is the kind of heroine I love most: capable, guarded, and deeply loyal to the people who depend on her. Her scars, both seen and unseen, shape her strength rather than diminish it, and I appreciated how the story never treats her as someone who needs saving. When Cyrus and Laria collide, the attraction is immediate, but trust is anything but easy, and that tension kept me fully invested.

What stood out most to me was how much heart this story has. Beneath the sword fights, betrayals, and shifting alliances, there’s a steady focus on acceptance and worth. McCollum gives space to characters who are considered flawed or unwanted by society and quietly reminds the reader that survival itself is a kind of victory. One quote that truly stuck with me was, “Scars merely show that ye’ve battled against something fierce and survived.” That line perfectly sums up the emotional core of this book.

While The Highlander’s Lady of Loch and Sea is labeled as a standalone, I do think readers who have read the previous books will feel a deeper connection to the characters and ongoing conflicts. There is a lot happening, and the world feels lived-in and complex. That said, the central romance between Cyrus and Laria stands firmly on its own, and their journey toward trust and love is satisfying and well earned.

The pacing balances action and intimacy nicely, with moments of danger offset by quieter scenes that allow the characters to breathe and grow. I also loved seeing familiar faces from earlier books and catching glimpses of their happily ever afters. It made the story feel warm and cohesive, like returning to a place you know well.

Overall, this was a cozy yet intense Highlander romance that reminded me why I enjoy this genre so much. If you’re looking for a historical romance filled with strong characters, found family, emotional depth, and a swoon-worthy Scottish warrior, this book is well worth your time.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4.5/5

Every single book in the Brotherhood of Solway Moss series continues to massively deliver! Of the three books, The Highlander's Lady of Loch and Sea takes my top favorite spot! It executes beautifully high-tension action, tender-issued angst, and the dreamiest of well-earned romancing. 4.5

On the day of his sister's wedding, Cyrus finds a note warning the bride of her groom's malicious intent. Eventually (and in a quite tied up manner!) Cyrus discovers Laria, the cousin of the groom, is the issuer of said warning. She tells the tale of a cruel cousin who would choose death for perceived abnormalities displayed amongst of his people rather than to embrace them. Willing them to be outcast or simply cast to death...including his own mother. Cyrus must decide whether the tale Laria spins is one of truth or deception. And he must decide what to do about his heart that begins to beat wildly for her.

I loved both of our leads so much, but Laria especially. Her heart is a fierce and loyal beast. Willing to sacrifice herself for loved ones. Helping to lead her outcast people to safety day in and day out. And ready to let go of her own dreams to ensure theirs. What a tremendous warrior she is, not by physical means, but by displaying the most courageous of spirits. And I adored Cyrus too! I admittedly did get frustrated at the times he wasn't sure whether to believe in full Laria's warning, but at the same time I understood his pragmatic approach. And ultimately, whether doubts existed or not, he never once hesitated to defend Laria. To run to her aid, to protect her, to support her. A woman he barely knew but his heart could not help but connect so deeply to.

Their romance is so swoony and dreamy. The spice comes before the emotional connection, they are honestly driven at first by lust but I love how that lust transformed. It transformed into trust, into sharing vulnerability of soul, and into forging a deep emotional bond. From lust grew the blossom of love. But angst had to come by too to disrupt it, which I secretly love! It isn't smooth sailing. Things are overhead by Laria which cast doubt and reluctance to take the step in making that special connection to Cyrus so much more. But Cyrus is not a man who will ever throw in the towel, he may misstep along the way, but he follows his heart, even when he's not at first quite what that heart is saying. He fights to earn trust back, to earn a chance to prove himself. And I cheered him on all the way through! I think of the two characters, his grows the most. He learns to listen and he learns to communicate better to. To not leave things unsaid. I just love how rewarding this romance is, it makes its finish all the more satisfying.

I also want to shout out the supporting cast! While we see the return of the leads from the previous books, who most caught my heart was the family of Laria. Her grandmother, her brother along with his wife and his chosen daughter. That family right there was all about loyalty to one another and I came to care for them, so quickly and deeply that I worried equally for their well-being as I did for our leads.

I continue to find so much satisfaction in reading highlander romances. Just blown away yet again by a book from this series! Give me more please, dear Heather McCollum!

I was given this by the publisher

3.5 stars

This is book 3 and it can be read as a standalone but I have not read the first two books and in this case I think it would have been beneficial to have read them. There are so many characters and I could not keep them all straight. I thought this would just be a typical, short historical romance, but this one had so many things going on. Cyrus has just married off his sister to a man he thinks is a good man and can unite the clans, but someone leaves a message at the wedding warning that the man Grace is marrying is not a good man. Cyrus needs to get to the bottom of this. He discovers Laria is the one who left the message and she has a band of misfits in the forest with people exiled due to physical and mental ailments. They are not welcomed in the town because of the new chief, Cyrus's new brother-in-law. He is drawn to Laria but he needs to figure out who is telling the truth. Laria does not know how much she can trust Cyrus, so they both have trust issues with each other. I did enjoy the book and I haven't read a good highlander novel in a while and the cover is great!

-"If women can have more say in things, there will be more peace."

-"Scars merely show that ye've battled against something fierce and survived, that ye were stronger than the attack to yer body."

-"And differences on the outside don't affect a person's blood or heart."

ARC Review

Thanks to much to Entangled Publishing and NetGalley for the eARC.

There’s something so comforting about a well done historical romance and this is a prime example. Cyrus is the epitome of a 16th century Highlander, fighting t
prevent English aggression while womanizing and strategizing with his peers. Laria is the lady of the clan, living in exile and on the run thanks to the cruelty and madness of her cousin, Chief Iain. Their paths collide when Cyrus’s sister weds Iain for political reasons and Laria disrupts the celebration to warn of Iain’s true nature.

Parts of this were fantastical and parts required a suspension of belief, but it was so darn fun that I didn’t care. This is the 3rd in a series and it would probably aid in understanding the relationships of all the characters and their families to read those first, but I read it as a standalone and was fine.

I enjoyed the political drama in this novel a lot, and all of the machinations and assassination plots made things entertaining. I think the romance between Laria and Cyrus felt a little bit insta-lust for me.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned from this series so far is that the only way to subdue a Highlander is to distract him, poison his drink, and tie him up long enough to carry out your agenda in the name of saving your family. Consistency is key, Right?!

This third installment is just as quick to get into as the previous books and there's not much waiting on the spice to hit either. This installment delves deeper into the clan rivalries, conspiracies, and assassination plots, with several shady side characters from earlier books resurfacing. I appreciated how the long-running political threads of the series finally came together.

The romance between Cyrus and Laria is HOT and also emotionally strained. Laria is driven by her need to return to the home she lost, while providing security and safety to her found family of outcasts, and Cyrus has to decipher if he believes Laria about the threats against his own family and friends.

At times, the romance did follow familiar beats from the previous two books, which made certain moments feel slightly recycled. But, the author does an excellent job of fleshing out both main characters, giving them depth and believable internal conflict. While this one didn’t have as many laugh-out-loud moments for me as the earlier books, it still delivers a solid mix of adventure, intrigue, and action—both in fight scenes and other setting.😉😉

Overall, this series has continued to be one of my favorites among Highlander romances I’ve read and this addition was another strong story to the series. I’m impressed with the world-building and overarching storyline and I really hope the author continues this world, especially by giving one of the jilted female side characters their own story—because one in particular has absolutely been given the short end of the stick not once, but twice. If you read the series, you'll know exactly who I’m talking about.

I received a gifted copy of this book, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

It's always fun (and dramatic) to return to the world of The Brotherhood of Solway Moss. In this one, Laria is living in somewhat exile of her clan due to her cousin Iain's reign as Chief wanting to rid the clan of those who he does not deem as physically or mentally perfect. While he rules over their family home, Laria leads a group of fellow exiles and works to protect them as much as possible. Her path crosses with Cyrus when he weds his sister Grace (who has no luck in the husband department in this series) to Iain and Grace tries to disrupt the wedding to save Grace from Iain. Lots of plot follows from here that I won't spoil, but it features many characters from the previous books in the series (some more welcome than others). Cyrus and Laria have a complicated journey and their problems stem mostly from their inability to trust one another, but I loved getting to follow it. The next book will be Asher's and I can't help but hope that Grace might be his match; the girl definitely needs a break, so if it's not him, hopefully she'll get a nice subplot to finish off her story too.

This isn’t my typical read but it was enjoyable. I didn’t realize I was reading out of order until like 30% through the book. Oops. It does work as a standalone but there are characters you will meet well into their story.

The writing style is great and the storyline moved nicely. It didn’t feel like there was a lull at any point.

Over all while it isn’t something I’d typically grab from a bookstore it was a quick read. 3 stars from me.

Thank you Entagled and NetGalley. All opinions here are my own.

A siren. A warrior. A dagger at his throat.

Cyrus Mackinnon may be known for his roguish charm, but beneath the grin is a future clan chief determined to protect his people. His political alliance through marriage should secure peace across the Isle of Skye—until a mysterious woman interrupts the celebration with a warning: the new brother-in-law may be more devil than ally.

Laria Macqueen knows her cousin’s darkness better than anyone. If she can’t stop the alliance, she’ll seduce Cyrus… and kill him. But when attraction sparks and loyalties blur, the line between duty and desire becomes dangerously thin.

I really wanted to root for Laria and Cyrus. The premise had everything I love—Highlander politics, forbidden attraction, secret agendas, dagger-to-the-throat tension. The setup was strong.

But the execution didn’t fully land for me.

Cyrus believing Laria so quickly felt underdeveloped, especially considering the political stakes and the risk to his clan. I wanted more tension, more doubt, more emotional buildup before that trust was earned. The romance had its moments, but it didn’t quite linger in a way that felt memorable.

That said, the Highland setting and the idea of a siren-like heroine caught between loyalty and love was intriguing. I just wish the emotional depth and character development had matched the strength of the premise.

✨ Tropes & Vibes:
🏴 Highlander Romance
🗡️ Seduce & Kill Mission
🔥 Warrior Hero
🌊 Siren Energy FMC
⚔️ Clan Politics & Betrayal
❤️ Enemies-to-Lovers Undertones

A solid Highland romance with a strong concept—just one I wish had dug a little deeper emotionally.

5 Stars! Yet again, Heather McCollum has written another fantastic book in the ‘Brotherhood of Solway Moss’ series. I really love this series and I wish I could write as well as Heather does. Anything she writes is a must read for me. The previous 2 books in this series were also 5 stars for me and while I’m a little foggy on some details from those books, since I read them about a year ago, I love how the author jogs my memory, giving just enough for me to remember main parts. I really want to reread this series in order, one after the other. But now I have to wait for the 4th book! This is why I prefer single books over a series, since I have very little patience. How will it end?! Tell me now! Haha. But I do love seeing past main characters in other books in the series, it’s like an extra epilogue!
The main characters in this one are Cyrus and Laria and I loved them both. As someone with many, many scars and less than perfect health, I felt for Laria, even though, yes, she’s fictional. This series has a lot of action, some sweat inducing sexy time scenes, conniving, lying, secrets, fighting, a kind old granny, mystery, betrayal, kidnapping, murder, death, love, happiness, an HEA ending and wrapped up with a gorgeous, buff, mouth watering cover! I 1000% recommend this series but would say start at the beginning as I feel it would be best read in order. You seriously won’t be disappointed. Just trust me on this. You’re welcome!

After escaping with three other men from an English prison, Cyrus Mackinnon and his fellow inmates, have been working hard to build an alliance among the clans of the Isle of Skye. To that end, he has engineered a wedding between his sister Grace and Iain Macqueen, the chief of the Macqueen clan. His sister seems happy and adding the Macqueen to the alliance, makes for a stronger Skye. But trouble starts almost immediately when Grace’s wedding is interrupted by an otter! Once the otter is shooed out, Cyrus sees a woman throw a note into the church, a note that warns Grace not to marry Iain. The wedding takes place, despite Cyrus’ unease. Later at the wedding feast, he meets an enchanting woman, and they spend an amazing night together, but he wakes up to find himself tied to the bed and the woman holding a knife to his throat. But instead of killing him, she begs his forgiveness and escapes, leaving him nude and tied to the bed. When he is found by Rory MacLeod, he is determined to find his enchantress and get some answers.

Widow Laria Macqueen is the daughter of a previous chief, but now is the champion of the clan members who have been cast out by Iain. Laria is certain that Iain murdered his mother (her aunt) and that he has an elaborate plan to take over the Mackinnon plan. He promised her aid for the outcasts if she would kill Cyrus. She planned to do it, but after sharing an amazing night with him, she just couldn’t go through with it and leaves him tied up and angry. She joins her outcasts in the woods and isn’t overly surprised when Cyrus finds her. She tries to explain and warn him of Iain’s treachery, yet it is clear that he doesn’t trust her, but she won’t stop trying to make him see the truth. He finally begins to believe her, and deeper feelings develop, but as much as she would like to give into those feelings, she cannot afford to indulge herself when her people are in danger. will they lose everything they have been fighting for, or can they find a way to save her people and keep the alliance?

This installment of the Brotherhood of Solway Moss is a well written, nicely paced story that has a lot going on and a lot of familiar faces. Cyrus and Laria have an amazing chemistry, and you can’t help but root for them. Their story is filled with emotion, secrets, murder, prejudices, steamyish love scenes, heartache, sacrifice, answers to some questions from the previous installments, a lot of new questions, a bit of magic and finally an ending that will warm your heart and leave you wanting more. I am now really looking forward to the final installment and finally learning the truth about Asher MacNicol! This is the third book in the series and while it could be read as a standalone, you will have a much better reader experience if you read the books in order.

I received an eARC for my honest opinion.

This is the third book in the Brotherhood of Solway Moss series, and in this installment, readers meet Laria Macqueen and Cyrus Mackinnon. While this book can be read as a standalone, I highly recommend reading the first two books in the series for a deeper understanding of the clans, their motivations, and the political tensions at play. McCollum’s writing continues to impress, her storytelling is immersive, emotional, and beautifully layered.

The plot is engaging and filled with romance, action, drama, and intrigue. The pacing remains steady throughout, allowing both the worldbuilding and character development to shine. I loved being swept away by the beauty of the Isle and learning more about each clan, their loyalties, and the forces determined to tear everything apart. This story is layered with mistrust, political tension, romance, action, and high emotional stakes, making it difficult to put down.

Cyrus has always been the charmer of the group, but in this book, readers get to see a deeper, more serious side of him. He travels with his sister, mother, and trusted warriors to see his sister wed to the Macqueen chief, all while trying to prove to his father that he is worthy of leading the clan one day. Laria, meanwhile, is free, yet free in chains. Though she is a Macqueen by blood, her cruel cousin ensures she is treated as anything but. She is capable, loyal, and deeply protective of those she loves. She understands her own strength, but her greatest desire is to keep her people safe.

The story also sheds light on the cruelty within the Macqueen clan, where anyone deemed “unholy” whether due to deformity, birthmarks, or injuries sustained in battle, is cast out and left to die. When Cyrus and Laria meet, the attraction is immediate, but with secrets, lies, and shifting alliances surrounding them, the fight for truth and for each other becomes increasingly dangerous. I won’t say more to avoid spoilers, but the tension is wonderfully done.

What truly stood out to me was how this book goes beyond the traditional elements of historical romance sword fighting, betrayal, and political maneuvering to explore deeper themes of acceptance, resilience, and self-worth. The found family formed by those deemed “flawed” by society was especially powerful. Their determination to survive together, and their belief that a day will come when they no longer have to live as outcasts, added so much emotional depth to the story.

One quote that stayed with me was: “Scars merely show that ye’ve battled against something fierce and survived.” This sentiment perfectly captures the heart of the book and its message.

I want to thank NetGalley and Entangled publishing for the opportunity to review this book.

The Highlander's Lady of Loch and Sea
By Heather McCollum

This is the third book in the compelling Highlander series. Although I have only read this book, I can confidently say it stands well on its own as a standalone story. The story is engaging and easy to follow, but I recommend reading the earlier books in the series to fully appreciate the expansive cast of characters and the rich backstories and themes that precede this book. This book is a captivating blend of romance, magic, and adventure, intricately weaving together elements of love, family, and unwavering loyalty. It is infused with deep emotion, hidden secrets, murder, societal prejudices, steamy love scenes, heartache, and the sacrifices that often accompany true devotion.

Cyrus Mackinnon has recently married off his beloved sister, Grace, to a man he believes possesses the right virtues necessary to help him unite the warring clans of Scotland, Chief Iain Macqueen. However, during the wedding ceremony, an ominous message is discreetly left, warning that the man Grace is about to marry may not have honourable intentions. Distrust begins to overshadow what should be a joyous union. Cyrus believes this will mark the start of his relentless mission to unify all Scottish clans, aiming to protect them from the looming threat posed by England's encroachment.
Who was that captivating woman who boldly interrupted the wedding?

Laria MacQueen emerges as a fiercely independent heroine who possesses a strong sense of identity and purpose. She is acutely aware that none of the clans on Skye are safe from the malicious schemes of her cousin, Iain, whose ambition endangers those she holds dear. Laria is sent to seduce and ultimately kill Cyrus. This order comes from her ruthless cousin, Iain. If Laria fails to complete her mission, Iain has promised to eliminate the band of misfits she has taken under her wing. As Laria navigates her conflicting emotions about love, loyalty, and survival, the stakes have never been higher. Laria is fueled by a powerful longing to reclaim the home and the rightful Chief of her clan. Throughout her journey, she is resolute in her commitment to providing sanctuary and security for her unconventional family of outcasts, a circle that includes her wise and resilient grandmother. Together, they navigate a world filled with peril, forging bonds of trust and loyalty in their quest for safety and belonging.
Laria finds more than she bargained for when she is forced to seduce and kill the very handsome Highlander!

Thank you to Entangled Publishing and Heather McCollum for the eARC in exchange for a review! All opinions that follow are honest and my own.

A highlander historical romance complete with Scottish accents and men who would do anything for the women they love.

Cyrus is our MMC who after escaping imprisonment at the hands of the English, is working to fortify the alliances between the Isle of Skye clans. After marrying his sister Grace to the chief of MacKinnon, he thinks he’s got a great start. Until the truth about said chief starts to come to light, and Cyrus is in grave danger. Here’s where we meet Laria, sent by her cousin (Chief MacKinnon) to off Cyrus. But something stops her, she is not a killer and she knows that Cyrus could be the key to saving her and the other outcasts. Together they must figure out the truth, is Laria to be trusted? Or will she be the demise of Cyrus and the Isle of Skye as they know it?

I’ve known for a long time that I’ve wanted to travel to Scotland and this book has really just solidified that. Sure it’s a historical romance but the imagery in this book was just something else. All the scenery was so well described that it really felt like you were there on the shores of the loch and in the tower lit by lanterns.
Overall, I really enjoyed the flow of this story, it kept me intrigued and curious as to how things would end up. I think it was pretty easy to tell the truth right off the bat but I still liked the overall lead up to the reveal.
I will mention that I haven’t read anything else by this author, including the earlier parts of this series, and while I believe each of these are technically standalones, there were some characters and lineage descriptions that seemed out of the blue that are perhaps more explained in previous stories. It didn’t ruin the story at all, but just a side note.
Either way, the love story between Laria and Cyrus was hot and heavy but you could tell how much Cyrus really cared for her. The way he talked about her like he couldn’t live without her, yup that did me in. I do wish we got more from Laria in terms of her thoughts on Cyrus overall. I feel like we got a lot about how attractive she saw him as and not as much about who he was a person.
All in all, was a quick read and I loved the history and imagery that really brought this book together.

The Highlander’s Lady of Loch and Sea swept me straight into the wild beauty of Skye and refused to let me go. I’m a huge fan of Heather McCollum, and once again she proves why—her storytelling is rich, emotional, and utterly addictive. She creates unforgettable characters and edge‑of‑your‑seat experiences, and this book is no exception. Somehow I missed this series, but you can bet I’ll be catching up as fast as I can.

Cyrus Mackinnon, the charming rogue with a warrior’s heart, meets his match in Laria Macqueen—a woman whose strength, loyalty, and fierce spirit absolutely captivated me. Laria is the kind of heroine who shines from the inside out. She protects her people with a courage that feels bone‑deep, and her willingness to sacrifice for those she loves made me adore her instantly. And Cyrus… wow. To be loved with that kind of strength and passion? Mesmerizing. Their chemistry starts as pure heat and transforms into something tender, vulnerable, and beautifully earned.

The tension between them is delicious—lust turning into trust, danger sharpening every emotion, and that perfect blend of angst and devotion that makes a romance feel truly alive. Cyrus’s growth especially made my heart swell. Even when he falters, he never stops fighting for Laria, for truth, for connection. Watching him learn to listen, to communicate, to love with his whole heart was incredibly satisfying.

And the world around them? Heather McCollum brings it to life with action, mystery, wit, and a cast of supporting characters who feel just as vivid. Laria’s family in particular stole my heart—their loyalty, their tenderness, their fierce unity. I worried for them as much as I did for our leads.

This story was exactly the adventure I needed to heat up this cold winter. Passionate, romantic, full of danger and heart—it’s the kind of Highlander tale that sweeps you away and leaves you smiling long after the final page.

You’re going to love the action, the intrigue, the swoony romance, and the unforgettable characters. Guaranteed. Enjoy the adventure yourself.

The Highlander’s Lady of Loch & Sea by Heather McCollum
Brotherhood of Solway Moss #3

~ Alliances through marriage are sought by four men who survived and escaped Carlisle Castle’s dungeon ~ Excellent series with wonderful characters who deserve their happily ever after ~

What I liked:
* Laria Macqueen: laird’s daughter, strong, protects the imperfect, knows her cousin is a madman, focused on saving her clan and putting her overlooked brother in place as laird of the clan
* Cyrus Mackenna: strong, resilient, survived torture and time in a dungeon, fast friends with the three men that were with him, seeks to unite the Isle of Skye, second son but now in line to be laird
* The chemistry between Cyrus and Laria, watching their relationship develop, and wondering what it would take for the two to realize they were meant to be together
* The group Laria is protecting and the strong bonds they had for one another – I felt I could see and understand each one of them
* Cleas: otter that has befriended Laria and Ginny: a dog that survived her mistress’s murder
* Being able to dislike the mad laird and his followers while wishing karma would deal with them
* Morag: in tune with the old ways and beliefs, a seer and healer, knows that there are women who will marry to strengthen the clans and each will represent fire, air, water, and finally earth
* Catching up with the characters from the two previous books
* The plot, pacing, setting, and writing
* Knowing that there is another book to look forward to

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about how much damage a bad leader can do
* Thinking about how difficult it would have been to live in this era
* Knowing that the four men in prison experienced horrific abuse, torture, and pain and that they were abandoned by their families

Did I like this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Definitely

Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing-Amara for the ARC – This is my honest review

The Highlander's Lady of Loch and Sea
Heather McCollum
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Cyrus MacKinnon has always been a sort of ladies man. But beneath the surface and that cheeky grin lies the heart of a warrior and a destiny to be the chief of his clan. He believes that if he weds his sister Grace to the Macqueen chief, he will forge a strong alliance among the Isle of Skye clans. That is until a lovely lass with eyes the color of the sea disrupts his sister's wedding celebrations to warn Cyrus that his new brother-in-law is in league with the devil himself.

Laria Macqueen knows that none of the clans of Skye are safe from her cousin and his evil plots. She hopes that she can stop the wedding, but if not she will have to seduce Cyrus herself and kill him. But plans don't always go as one would like and she finds that after bedding him she can't seem to do the dirty deed as she had planned.

Now Cyrus is stuck in the middle of a war he didn't want with the Macqueens and he knows that with one wrong move all of Skye could be soaked in blood with so many innocent lives lost. And in the middle stands Laria, a lass who will either steal Cyrus’s soul…or lure them all to their deaths.

Oh my gosh! I'm almost speechless (a very rare thing for me). I'm not quite sure how Heather McCollum does it, but she has gone above and beyond with this book. From the moment I started reading this book it lured me in like a siren in the night that I just couldn't seem to get enough of. As one page went into the next it was like being in the cinema watching the best movie of my life. This wonderful author never ceases to astound me. She is so incredibly talented that it blows my mind. Laria was so courageous considering what she had been through and Cyrus was the best book boyfriend I've had in a long time. All in all you won't want to miss this book and I highly recommend it.

Passionate, romantic and intriguing Scottish historical tale
I enjoy well-told stories and Ms. McCollum can undoubtedly write some of the most intriguing, passionate and well-developed character-led stories. Her choice of book covers is not bad either; how does she find some of the hottest guys in kilts? I do not know but keep them coming…
This is book three of a series of standalone but interconnected stories and characters. After seemingly being abandoned by their families to remain imprisoned in an English dungeon, four clansmen from different clans from Skye, decide to take their revenge by consolidating their clan forces and gather more if they can against the English. An anonymous source sends them blankets which their jailers allow them to keep. In the seams their benefactor has sewn things to help in their escape: a key, coins, a “sgian dubh” and the name of a ship. When they return to their respective clans. They find many things have changed. Each man encounters challenges. But one of their biggest issues is how to consolidate the clans since they have fought each other for generations. The four decide marriage among the clans is the only way. In this book we see Cyrus Mackinnon who is known as the lady’s man going against type; he finds his own lady but with much conflict, difficulty and intrigue. Will Laria Macqueen be worth it?
If you like intrigue in your historical romance, you will want to read this book and series. Ms. McCollum can transport the reader to another time and place with ease. I could not put this book down. I volunteered to review an ARC of it through NetGalley and Entangled Publishing. It comes highly recommended.

REVIEW
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

STORYLINE :
The storyline was cute, engaging, and interesting. It has a perfect blend of romance, suspense, and danger. In addition, the MCs had amazing chemistry. However, their love story was unrealistic given the circumstances. The MMC practically fell in love at first sight with the woman sent to assassinate him despite his roguish way. But, I looked past it because they were cute together and the way Cyrus for Laria and her family.
I also liked how the villain was. He was a well written psychopath.
The storyline was evenly paced and enjoyable

CHARACTERS:
My favourite character was the FMC; Laria Macqueen. She was brave and compassionate, literally putting her life on the line for her mismatched family. I loved her. She was absolutely amazing.
The MMC, Cyrus Mackinnon, was an okay character who's a better leader and enforcer of justice.
I also liked reading about the other characters in the series. It was cute, and I like that about series like this.

WRITING STYLE:
It was okay, and I have no complaints about it. Most importantly, there were no confusions about who was who and what was going on.

SETTINGS:
Well described castles, forests, and rivers. They were okay by me.

OVERALL:
The book was an amazing read for me. I liked almost everything about it. It was an easy read for me, and I couldn't stop once I started because I wanted to know what was next with Laira and Cyrus and the Macaueen issue. I would definitely recommend

Love is expensive. Too expensive for some.

This book is part of a series but can be read as a standalone. This was my first book by this author so I was a bit confused because I didn't know the characters or events from previous books in the series but you don't need to know them to understand the plot of this book. The story is told from two POVs.

Laria Macqueen, brave and intelligent cousin of Chief Iain Macqueen. She tries to stop her cousin's sinister plans. She is willing to sacrifice everything to expose his atrocities, even her own happiness and life.

Cyrus Mackinnon, future chief of clan Mackinnon, ran away with his friends from the Carlisle dungeon and wants to unite all of Scotland to stop the English invasion. After being compared to his deceased older brother for all his life, Cyrus's only goal is to make alliances and strengthening his clan. His plans change after meeting Laria.

They both have to decide what is more important, happiness or their clans.

Both characters were well fleshed out and easy to root for. Although there was some miscommunication, it didn't lead to much unnecessary drama. I liked that Cyrus didn't try to impose his will on Laria and listened to what she had to say. The writing and pacing was good. The romance and action parts were well balanced.

Overall, it is a book for those who love both romance and fast paced action. I really liked the story and will definitely read more books of this author.

Many thanks to the publisher and NetGally for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

The Highlander's Lady of Loch & Sea by Heather McCollum
Book 3 of the Brotherhood of Solway Moss series

Thank you to Entangled Publishing and Heather for entrusting me with this early copy!

Historical romance, interconnected standalones
Multiple POV but mostly dual, cinnamon roll MMC, outcast FMC who loves water, disability rep, fast burn, clans seeking alliances, complicated family, otter friend!

Cyrus is irritated and intrigued when a mystery woman shows up as his sister's wedding to try to thwart it, claiming the groom is an evil man. Laria knows he is evil because she is his cousin and has seen his atrocities. Once the marriage has happened, her cousin threatens the group of people she cares for and forces her to try to take out Cyrus. After they share a passionate night, she can't bear to do it and runs away, though Cyrus ends up finding her and her exiled crew. Can Laria convince Cyrus she is telling the truth?

This is a fun series that has been featuring four Highland warriors finding their matches that also has an overarching threat that is building! This was definitely a fast burn, but I did enjoy Cyrus and Laria figuring themselves out after some barriers were taken care of. We also got some more Morag, who is fun! I feel like I know who the next FMC is because, dangit, she deserves a happy ending too! I'm looking forward to the next book, which I believe will be the final of this series, to get to know the mysterious fourth warrior who has been missing and see how the overall storyline wraps up!

Cyrus vs. the con man

Cyrus is initially glad to see his sister married to the Macqueen leader, until he crosses paths with his new brother-in-law's crafty and beautiful cousin, Laria. When their night of passion ends rather unexpectedly, Cyrus has his work cut out for him trying to find the truth at Tuath Tower.

Being one of the few people who knows the depraved depths of her cousin Iain's darker nature, Laria keeps herself and her close-knit band of misfits hidden away for safekeeping. When Cyrus finally catches up to her, he has to decide whether to believe Laria's reports - which means his sister is in danger - or should he believe the charming Iain, who reassures him that everything is as it should be. Getting to the truth proves to be far more dangerous than he could've imagined.

Cyrus and Laria's relationship starts off as all passion and little trust, but gradually grows in strength and foundation as Cyrus and his friends uncover all the deeply hidden secrets. Theirs is a beautiful, and quite steamy, romance that was a joy to read. I also loved getting to know all the various clan members who entrusted their safety to Laria and her brother, and was overjoyed to see everything work out at the end.

This is an extremely well-written historical romance with plenty of action and remarkable characters. Third in the series of standalone romances, it is perhaps my favorite thus far, though the earlier two books are excellent as well. I highly recommend this book, series, and author for anyone who loves reading exciting Highlander romances.

I sat down to read this a few weeks ago on a cold and snowy night, I grabbed a cup of tea, a blanket, a cat, and dove in. I stopped reading 6 hours later and thought well I only have a few more chapters and finished it in one day. This book had me completely enchanted and I just couldn't stop.

Now I think by now we all know that I love a good historical romance, if there are kilts and ships I'm a happy woman, there's just something comforting about them that brings back the feeling of being 17 and seeing those fantastic covers that I still love on books that I couldn't wait to read.

This is one of those books that will have you falling in love with romance as a genre and seeing the comfort that they can bring, are there hard moments yes, and there are times you want to scream yeah plenty of those, are there characters you're dying to see end up together ohh yeah. I for one loved it and it was so much fun to just picture it all happening.

Cyrus and Lyria are so much fun to read, I loved the way they met, the initial "exchange" the evolution of the story, and the ending, ohhh that ending. Now the spice does start early in this one but it's done with so much purpose and the story needed it to start there, I for one loved it.

Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled for providing an advance copy of this ebook, I have voluntarily read and reviewed it and all thoughts and opinions are my own.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/5)

The Highlander’s Lady of Loch and Sea is an engaging historical romance set against the turbulent backdrop of Highland clans and the growing threat of the English crown. The story focuses on the efforts of the clans to unite in order to protect their lands and way of life, highlighting how alliances, especially marital ones, were used as tools for survival and power.

At the heart of the novel is a strategic marriage alliance between two rival clans. Cyrus arranges for his sister to marry Iain, the leader of the opposing clan, believing it to be a necessary step toward unity. What he doesn’t anticipate is Laria, Iain’s cousin, who tries to stop the marriage after realizing that her cousin is far from the honorable man others claim him to be.

I found this book quite entertaining and especially enjoyed getting a glimpse into the daily life and social dynamics of Highland society. It sparked my curiosity about Scottish history, which was refreshing since I’ve recently been reading mostly Regency-era novels. I also found it interesting to see how the English were portrayed through the lens of another culture.

The spice level was about a 3 out of 5—there weren’t many intimate scenes, but the ones included were tasteful and not overly explicit. Overall, this was a solid and enjoyable read, and I would definitely recommend it to fans of Highland romance and historical fiction.

This one was a 3.5 stars rounded to 4 for me!

I found it quite entertaining. I loved Cyrus and Laria as characters and couples.
This is an interconnected stand alone and I haven't read the other two books. I think because of this I was lost a bit on the some of the clan politics and side characters. However, the important aspects clan politics that influenced the plot of this book were definitely clear and straight forward.
I loved reading about Laria and Cyrus learn to trust one another and over come their self doubts about their love. I also really enjoyed reading the scene with Cyrus and his friends discussing how he can woo Laria back and needs to properly propose. I also liked the epigraphs at the beginning featuring some famous quotes. I liked trying to figure out how the related to what was about to happen.

I also listened to the audiobook. I thought Mhairi Morrison and Dave Gillies were great narrators! The audiobook was in a dual POV style like the book. It was fun to listen to the story with their accents and pronunciations. It definitely helped me imagine I was a part of the story.

This was a dramatic steamy historical romance staring the Scottish highlands and overall an enjoyable book! This is a book I'd recommend to a friend who is interested in historical romance of this time period or looking for something new to try.

Thank you Entangled for a review copy! This review reflects my own opinions.

This is classed as a standalone, but in my opinion, I'm not sure that's a good idea. I've read all three books, and I feel that if I'd only read this book (book 3), I'd be missing some valuable information. There are little details we're reminded of, but reading them all, gives you a better grasp of all the players. This book is about Cryus Mackinnon, one of four Scottish soldiers that were imprisoned by King Henry. The four men bonded during their time in prison and after escaping, decided they'd had enough of the clans fighting each other instead of focusing on the real threat, England. Cryus is the charmer of the group. He's usually very good with the ladies. He's also confident, strong, loyal, and compassionate. When Laria Macqueen walks into his life, he starts second guessing himself. Laria is clever, determined, caring, and a protector of those she loves. As the story progresses, we see each of them struggle with the limitations and expectations that have been placed upon them. While trying to figure out where the truth lies, mysteries begin to unravel and a few twists throw them off track. The side characters are entertaining and had me laughing out loud. I'm very interested to see what happens when we finally get Asher MacNicol's story and the final piece to the puzzle.

This story is a lot like a chess game in that in order to make a strategic move, Cyrus needs to understand his opponent. Cyrus is trying to bring the clans of Skye together by marrying his sister Grace to Iain, only someone tries to stop it by having an otter run loose. He receives a note telling him to not trust Iain but goes ahead with the wedding. Later Laria is sent to seduce and kill Cyrus on orders from her cousin Iain and if she doesn't, he will kill the band of misfits she has in the forest. Laria finds she can't kill Cyrus but does leave him in an awkward position. Cyrus is determined to find what exactly is going on and who to trust. Trusting the wrong people can not only be deadly but break the fragile alliance Cyrus, Rory, and Kenan have worked so hard establishing. Laria is trying to save her people and wants to somehow get her cousin Erskine on the thrown as he is the rightful laird of the clan. Trusting Cyrus is challenging when he is trying to figure out who to trust amid all the betrayals, shifting clan loyalties and danger. It has you rooting for people to understand that "differences on the outside don't affect a person's blood or heart" and that good will win over evil so that happiness and hope can return to the clan. It is a complicate journey for Cyrus and Laria but well worth the read.
