This was a ton of fun. In the interest of full transparency, a couple of my favourite tropes feature, so perhaps I'm a bit more inclined to enjoy it than the average reader? If so, it's only a by a teensy bit because JUST ONE LIE starts with a bang (haha! sorry) and keeps getting twistier. Hatton has a great conversational writing style that feels like you're gabbing with your gossipiest bestie hearing the wildest "You'll never guess what happened..." story of your life. I was on the edge of my seat for most of this. I really couldn't predict where things were going until very late in the book.

JUST ONE LIE is tense. Like, screaming at my e-reader, "Girl, GET OUT OF THE HOUSE!" levels of tense. If you're into that kind of vibe in your thrillers, this one is for you.

I loved the local South African setting. I loved the high stakes cat and mouse game. I really liked Emily as a protagonist. There were a few moments, especially at the beginning when some of the secondary characters said or did things that threw me out of the moment. I didn't buy anyone would say/do that in those circumstances. I acknowledge that grief affects us all differently though, so it is what it is. Once the narrative laser focused on Emily and her husband, I was all in.

This would make a great movie!

It took me a minute to get through the first few chapters but only because there were somethings people said to the woman who had just lost her husband that just didn’t sit right with me.

However after those first initial chapters everything after that had me SAT!! First her husband is dead and then a he is found with a head injury and a whole new personality? I was able to predict what would follow after that quite easily I still really enjoyed it the boom much like a Frieda McFadden book where you can see exactly how it’s going to pan out but the writing still has you hooked right to the end and listen when you get to the end!!

I hated the ended not because it wasn’t good but because it left me with my jaw on the floor and needing more I kept clicking to the end hoping for a bonus chapter from his POV just to confirm what we were all thinking!!!!

Very good book definitely recommend.

I am all for a good psychological thriller and this didn't disappoint.

I didnt see those twists and turns coming but it had me in the edge of my seat the whole way through.

I would of given it a 5 except for the fact that the bunker seen was predictable and she fell for it, but it needed to be that way for the story line to unfold.

Amazing piece of literature

This was such a gripping, fast-paced read -- I genuinely struggled to put it down.

What starts as a story of loss quickly twists into something far more unsettling, with tension that builds as Emily realises the man who returned isn’t the one she loved.

By chapter 12, I thought I had it all figured out… I was completely wrong. The twists caught me off guard in the best way.

A quick, addictive thriller that keeps you guessing.

When I say this psychological thriller is a real page turner, I genuinely mean it. I am completely obsessed with this authors writing. This is one of those books that keeps you up all night because you need to know how it ends, yet at the same time you never want it to end.

We follow our protagonist, Emily, a psychologist and the wife of Alexander Van Lyden, aka Zander. During a work trip in Botswana, Zander is presumed dead after a car explosion. This moment shatters Emilys world and pulls her into the dark and unsettling truth of who Alexander Van Lyden really was.

The book moves beyond the shocking incident and explores the secrets, lies, and manipulation that shaped their marriage. Emily’s journey becomes a mix of grief, truth seeking, and survival as she pieces together the life she thought she knew. The impact of trauma, the complexity of emotional control, and the subtle progression of psychological abuse are portrayed with striking realism.

Although some parts of the character development and plot direction feel predictable, the story remains gripping from start to finish. It is the kind of book that easily breaks a reading block and reminds you why you enjoy thrillers in the first place.

I must also acknowledge the powerful and chilling depiction of abusive behaviour. The author highlights how even highly educated and accomplished people can find themselves trapped, silenced, or uncertain of how to seek help. I must say that this book does emphasise on the emotional confusion victims experience when love, fear, and loyalty collide. This adds emotional weight to the story and invites readers to reflect on the hidden realities many victims face.

The atmosphere, pacing, and escalating tension keep you completely invested. There is a strong blend of psychological depth, unexpected turns, and the unsettling realisation of how easily truth can be distorted when you trust the wrong person.

Overall, this book offers tension, emotional depth, and a thoughtful look at mental health, manipulation, and abusive relationships. It leaves you thinking long after the final page.

Just One Lie by S. C. Hatton follows newly married Emily van Lynden, whose seemingly perfect life shatters when she receives news that her husband, Zander, has been caught in a car bombing. Grief quickly gives way to confusion when Zander appears at her doorstep, very much alive, but now calling himself Alex. This version of her husband is distant, cutting, and unsettlingly cruel. He is the mirror image of the man she married, yet entirely different from him.

As the story unfolds, the central question becomes impossible to ignore: did the accident fundamentally change him, or has Emily been living with a stranger all along? Hatton builds this tension beautifully, layering suspicion and unease until it becomes impossible to look away.

I tore through this book. The short chapters, sharp pacing, and steady drip of red flags made it a compelling psychological thriller that kept me saying, “Emily, please run,” even though I knew I was strapped in for the full ride. It is thoroughly entertaining, addictive, and atmospheric in all the right ways.

I genuinely enjoyed this novel and look forward to exploring more of Hatton’s work. Thank you to S. C. Hatton for providing me with a free ARC in exchange for my honest and voluntary review.

The call shatters her morning: her husband has been caught in a car bombing—one so devastating there should be no survivors. Shock becomes grief, grief becomes numbness… until, hours later, he appears on their doorstep alive. Unharmed. And carrying secrets that make no sense.

Relief turns quickly to suspicion as his story twists, shifts, and contradicts itself. Something about the bombing doesn’t add up. Something about him doesn’t add up. And with every answer he gives, a new question opens beneath her feet.

S.C. Hatton delivers a gripping psychological thriller where a single impossible moment becomes the spark that unravels a marriage, a mystery, and a carefully buried past. When one lie detonates, nothing—love, identity, or loyalty—survives unscathed. Quick, fast paced page turner with an unpredictable twist.

Wow this book blew me away. I read it all in one sitting because I just had to see what happens next. Just one lie is a amazing psychological thriller that had me hooked from the first twist. And the end I never saw it coming. The way a single seemingly harmless lie unravels into a twisty story where every character had something to hide. I didn't know who to trust until the very end and then even at the end it has me second guessing Definitely will recommend if you like reading books by Lisa Jewell and Gillian McAllister 🇿🇦

"No one could pretend for that long. If Zander had been hiding darkness inside him, she would've noticed it. Somewhere. A flicker. A moment. Even the best liars slip. But not once did she catch a glimpse. It is easy to pretend for a weekend, even for a month. But four years? Four years of love, laughter, and shared routines. He couldn't have faked that. No one could."

Wow! Welcome to the world of Just One Lie - where 'for better or worse' takes a turn for the worst and 'forever' seems more like a threat than a promise. This book had me on the edge of my seat the entire time! I've read it four times and I'm still hooked every single time. S.C. Hatton knows what thrillers are made of.

Every moment you spend with Emily and Zander will be hair-raising, spine-tingling and nerve-wrecking. Throughout the entire book, I found myself wondering if I was imagining things, as Emily wondered herself. S.C. Hatton is so good that you feel Emily's joy at getting her husband back and you feel her terror at having him stay. Through her eyes, you see changes in her husband that could be dismissed because of his head injury . . . but should they be?

S.C. Hatton dives into the darker side of the human pscyche in this dark domestic thriller, offering you a situation that seems completely plausible and incredibly dark. Emily's character is pushed to the limit as she navigates the bloodied waters that her life has become and she has to put on her investigative hat in order to find out whether her husband, the man she knew and loved, is gone forever or simply hiding inside the man that has returned to her.

Warning: You will not be able to think of anything else while reading (and well after finishing) Just One Lie. If you're a fan of domestic thrillers with epic twists, do not hesitate to buy this one once it's released. You will not regret it.

🖤 Book Review 🖤

📖: Just One Lie
✒️: S.C. Hatton
⭐: ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

🤯 Where do I begin...

At 40% I thought I had everything figured out, I was close. But was wrong 😅

It had me gripped on every page turn, I needed to race to the end to find out the who, what, and why. I was left with an awwww, then a 🤯, and proceeded to bombard the Author with questions (Sorry, not sorry).

You will get twists, questions, answers, then more questions.

😱 The Nightmare of Identity

Seriously, Just One Lie is a masterclass in psychological suspense that grabs you right from the first page. It absolutely refuses to let go until that last, chilling sentence. The whole premise-your 'dead' husband returning-is unsettling enough, right? But the author quickly peels back those initial layers to reveal a terrifying scenario that is way more complex than just simple amnesia or a case of mistaken identity.

Those claustrophobic settings (both the literal spaces and the mental prisons) totally crank up the tension. Our girl Emily is stuck in a living nightmare, trapped between the husband she adores (Zander) and the terrifying stranger (Alex) who now wears his face. The pacing? Relentless. Every single chapter throws a major new reveal or a shocking confrontation that forces you to question everything about marriage, loyalty, and who people really are.

Why only 4 Stars? 🫣

Look, this book is seriously thrilling (See what I did there? I will see myself out 🫠). It delivers all the thrills and psychological depth any suspense lover could dream of.

So why the 4-star rating, hurry up already! (Wow I can drag things out, huh? 🤣) Honestly, it’s a minor thing: the sheer velocity of the final act. That last 20% of the book is a whirlwind of non-stop action and major reveals that, while totally exhilarating, felt too fast. I was begging for just a little more space to process the emotional damage before the story sprinted to the final page. I just needed a moment to breathe! - Suppose thats not a bad thing right? 👀

🤓 Final Verdict:

If you live for thrillers that completely mess with your head and leave you questioning reality, then pick this book up immediately!

I can go on forever about any book I love, but as always, I have to cut it short here. (Word count and all that 😜)

Be warned: clear your schedule, because once you start, you won't be able to put it down.

An engaging read

This was a gripping psychological thriller told entirely from the female main character’s perspective and I really enjoyed being anchored so firmly in her head throughout. The story unfolds in Cape Town after her new husband suffers a horrific accident while out of the country. When he returns home, something is clearly off - and from there the tension quietly but steadily builds as the mystery deepens.

As a South African reader, I found a particular kind of comfort in the setting. It reminded me of what I imagine it must feel like for American readers who so often see their own world reflected in popular fiction. That said, the setting was never heavy-handed. The story doesn’t rely on local knowledge to work and in many ways it could have taken place anywhere. Still, the small South African details- a familiar greeting here, a recognisable surname there- added a lovely layer of atmosphere without ever pulling focus from the plot.

One aspect I initially struggled with was the extreme wealth of the characters. The FMC marries into enormous privilege and lives a life where every domestic task is handled for her. She is never inconvenienced by cooking, cleaning or laundry and that level of wealth felt distant from my own reality and, I suspect, from that of many readers. At first, it distracted me and even read as slightly colonial, which made me question how modern a reflection of South Africa this was meant to be. However, as the story unfolded and ultimately resolved, I reconsidered this reaction. The lifestyle portrayed may actually be a very accurate depiction of how the ultra-wealthy live and my discomfort likely stemmed more from my own lack of exposure than from any misstep by the author.

The plot itself moved at a satisfying pace and kept me turning pages right to the end. I enjoyed trying to piece together the mystery as it unfolded and sitting with that uneasy sense of not quite knowing who - or what - to trust. Both male main characters grew on me over time and by the final stretch I was genuinely conflicted about what outcome I wanted and how I hoped the story would resolve.

Because I became so invested, the tension felt higher and more personal, which made this a compelling and engaging read all the way to the last page.

The premise of this book immediately pulled me in 👀✨. Doppelgänger? Long-lost twin? Plastic surgery? I genuinely had no idea which direction the story was going to take, and that mystery kept me turning the pages.

I did find the first 20% a little slow and somewhat repetitive 🐢, while the final 20% shifted dramatically into high-stakes, action-packed territory 🔥. The pacing felt slightly uneven overall, but the payoff made the journey worthwhile.

One of my favourite aspects was seeing familiar locations woven into the story across Botswana and South Africa 🌍🇿🇦. That added such a unique and immersive layer to the reading experience and made the story feel closer to home.

The emotional tension of loving someone who suddenly feels like a stranger was incredibly unsettling, and the psychological elements kept me questioning what was real right until the end 😮‍💨✨. A gripping concept with an intriguing mystery at its core.

Nothing gets me hooked into a book quicker than when an HEA turns dark and Just One Lie reeled me in. Hatton weaved an intense narrative that made me question all the characters and just when I thought I connected the dots, boom- I was thrown back into a sea of doubt.
I re-read the ending three times, and each time I found a little nugget I'd missed before. If that isn't a psychological mind warp, I don't know what is.
Just One Lie makes you wonder about your own reality and begs the question- how far are willing to go to survive?

Highly recommend!

Page turner

This book was exceptionally well written and kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. The story was gripping, constantly leaving me wondering whether the character was in their mind, truly present, or suffering from a head injury. I highly recommend this book.
