“Japan Travel Guide 2025” by Reina Mori captured my attention with its exploration of cultural differences. I appreciated learning about Japan’s emphasis on etiquette, such as bowing, removing shoes, and the quiet reverence maintained on trains. These insights, combined with descriptions and photos of cherry blossoms, descriptions of hot springs, and the insights on vibrant festivals, had me imagining, "I could live here."

The book ignited a deep excitement to visit Japan and immerse myself in its captivating beauty. Mori’s vivid writing brought the country to life, artfully blending traditional charm with modern innovations—from the tranquility of tea houses to Tokyo’s towering skyscrapers, the enticing aromas of street food, to the convenience of staying connected through rentable a portable WiFi device.

The guide is structured by chapters of major cities, but unfortunately, it suffers from repetitive content. Many chapters included general information about Japan instead of focusing on the specifics of the city she was meant to highlight in that particular chapter. Many times, also, I found myself pausing to think, “Didn’t I just read that?” The book’s potential as a five-star guide is also hindered by formatting issues. Some pages lacked proper paragraph breaks, making them difficult to read, and the overall structure could have benefited greatly from a skilled editor.

Despite these flaws, Mori’s ability to evoke a sense of place and culture makes this guide a worthwhile read, especially for first-time travelers to Japan. With tighter editing, it could truly shine as a top-tier travel companion.

Definitive Guide to Japan Travel!

There are a lot of Japan travel guidebooks out there, but most miss out on potentially interesting locations to visit. Having lived in Japan for 15 years, I can say that this guide book covers Japan in its entirety and most of the famous places that native Japanese travel to. This is no easy feat, as most guide books just focus on the touristy areas of Tokyo and Kansai (Kyoto / Osaka / Nara), but this author went out of her way to ensure the recommended sights to see across the country are included.

This is important because Japan is getting crowded from tourism, so I would always recommend going on the road less traveled. This book will give you lots of ideas on where to go to avoid the crowds!

I also enjoyed that the author gave very specific recommendations on details like the order of cities in which you should travel, how long it takes to get in-between cities or how much time you should budget to visit a temple or go on a mountain hike, and even recommendations for specific restaurants in certain cities.

Overall, a trustworthy and comprehensive guide that I would recommend if you are serious about visiting some of the best places in Japan even if they are not the most famous!

Well Organized and Detailed

This Japan travel guide simplifies the trip-planning process by providing easy itineraries for exploring popular cities like Tokyo and Kyoto, as well as hidden local gems. It offers money-saving tips for meals, transportation, and lodging, while also explaining the local transit systems in clear detail. The guide also advises on the best times to visit for seasonal attractions like cherry blossoms and festivals, and includes a comprehensive dining guide ranging from street food to high-end sushi. It provides cultural insights to help travelers navigate social customs and suggestions for unique experiences such as staying at traditional inns and visiting hot springs.

I must commend the organization of this traveling book. Despite being a simple travel guide, it is well-crafted and effortless to navigate through. I am currently planning my next family vacation to Japan and this book has been a helpful resource! It even includes hidden gems that may otherwise be overlooked. After learning about Okinawa, I'm strongly considering planning a trip there. And visiting during cherry blossom season is an absolute must.
