Natalie's got a plan. Jake doesn't fit into it.
Natalie Bennett is an expert problem solver. As the publicist for her pop-star sister, she's no stranger to handling even the most tenuous circumstances. She craves control and she'll be damned if you catch her making a mistake. When a PR crisis breaks out weeks before the biggest tour of her sister's career kicks off, Natalie has no room for error.
Things get complicated when Natalie’s team hires additional security and Jake Alder enters the picture. He’s broody, intimidating, and it turns out, he’s also her bodyguard for the tour. Despite trying to ignore his existence, Jake's creeping into Natalie's life and this new complication was definitely not part of her plan.
Jake's on the run from his past. Natalie's going to make him face it head on.
Jake Alder has exactly one rule in his life: no connections, ever. Not to a job, not to a place, and definitely not to another person. Scarred by the mistakes of his past, Jake’s career as contract security keeps him on the road and away from home, too busy to form attachments that might lead him to get hurt again. His new contract with a high-profile tour is nothing out of the ordinary, just another in a long list of assignments that he’ll walk away from when it’s all said and done, no reason to look back.
But he didn't count on Natalie Bennett—controlling, uptight, and now his sole responsibility. He can't avoid her and it turns out, he doesn't want to.
When they're thrown together, the chemistry between them becomes undeniable. Before they know it, they’re sneaking around behind the scenes and hiding from everyone. Late nights are the new norm and things are starting to feel more than temporary. The threat of getting caught with his client is the least of Jake’s problems though when his day job crosses the wrong path and he ends up right in the middle of a scandal big enough to bring his world crashing down.

Love Blackout is the 1st book in the Tinted Truth Series. This is a series of interconnected standalones; this first installment is brought to us by debut author Alexis Graham.
I am going to start off by saying that I am amazed that this is Alexis Graham’s debut novel. Her writing comes off as someone who has been writing and publishing for years. The confidence Alexis has in her composition, the way that she intentionally develops her characters, and all the emotional layering she does proves all the thought and time Alexis put into crafting not only this story, but also the plot and sub-plot. And honestly that’s truly exceedingly impressive, and in my honest opinion makes this book well worth the read.
***
I am a sucker for a rockstar romance, it’s one of my favorite genre’s and I know if I could live in this world forever I would. I love music and I love getting my hands on anything music related in what I read and when I came across the rockstar genre I was hooked from the first chapter.
And Alexis Graham took the rockstar genre and added a bodyguard romance just making this feel like it was the next logical evolution. And I can honestly say that Alexis’s Love Blackout perfectly delivered on everything you could want from it.
Love Blackout is set next to the chaos of tour life as we follow Natalie Bennet. Natalie is this fiercely capable publicist who’s devoted to protecting her sister who just happens to be a pop star (I just love this sisterly bond). And we also get to meet Jake Alder, the man who works as a bodyguard for hire. Jake’s been hired to watch over and protect not only Natalie’s sister but also Natalie herself.
I love the way that Alexis gave us a dual POV that allowed us to get full access to Natalie’s non-stop inner monologue as she battled all her inner pressure. And Jake, he was just full of this quiet restraint that you can’t help but fall in love with. And these multiple POVs gave this story a more layered feeling; you could really feel the slow-burn that felt so intentional.
Natalie: I found her to be insanely relatable. And I can’t say that it was her perfectionism that I related to. It was more her instinct to carry everything for everyone, I feel like I do the same thing for those I love and care about, and like Natalie, I put a lot of pressure on myself all the time. I can honestly say that I spent a lot of time doing a lot of self-reflection while I was reading this book…all the while I was connecting with Natalie on this deeply personal level, in a way that I haven’t connected with a character ever, I think. And Natalie’s character elevates this story, watching her slowly lower the walls that she’s built tight around her, was honestly so beautiful and I loved that part of the book so much.
Natalie is used to taking care of others and with her sisters upcoming tour Natalie wants to ensure her tour goes off perfectly. But when a story comes out that has the potential to severely damage her sister’s reputation Natalie can’t help but let her inner problem solver kick in. Natalie takes control, rewrites the story quickly and has it published as quickly as she can in order to protect and fix her sister’s career.
Jake: I loved his steady, protective, and quiet intensity, a man who’s used to being on his own. He has this trauma filled tragic past that has left him with scars that has left him guarded, and determined that he’s not going to have any sort of lasting connection be it professional or personal. There’s honestly something about a man who notices everything. Jake feels so deeply yet he chooses restraint, and this makes the tension between them crackle like electricity. As we read, we feel the chemistry build between Natalie and Jake. We know that the chemistry and their connection builds through their proximity, their stolen glances, and the emotional vulnerability and it’s all a slow-burn rather than feeling rushed physically.
Jake is used to taking on protection duties for Rockstars, that’s nothing new to him. At least that is until he takes on one Rockstar who has a sister who also becomes his responsibility. He finds their attraction to be shocking and unexpected, and he finds that he can’t avoid it. And sneaking around with his client was far from his plan. But Jake has to wonder if what happens on tour actually stays on tour?
But you know that eventually their restraint was going to slip, as it always does.
And honey, the spice! Oh my God, the spice. The spice was getting me hot and there were times where I was clutching my bedsheets! And we get just enough emotional intimacy to see behind their connection, to see their bond, and we get to see their romance bloom into action. And while the spice hits home, yet at the same time, we know that its earned and its meaningful. You feel like that romance that you have watched bloom between Natalie and Jake feels grounded in the trust that they each in the other and you can feel the tension sizzling constantly between them and it’s not there for just shock value, it’s there for a purpose.
I loved these characters so much, they all worked together for me, and in the end, the payoff made it all worthwhile. The pacing was perfect for this book and I’m still in shock that this was Alexis Graham’s debut novel.
More than just the romance, I loved the sibling dynamics. The backdrop of the tour-life (I mean who didn’t have dreams of being a pop star while they were growing up?), all the media pressure, and the family elements that Alexis knitted throughout Love Blackout. All of this just added more layers and depth and helped to make this world feel so lived in rather than just being a romance. I loved the storyline, the plot and the sub-plots.
I have to say that Love Blackout is this character-driven slow burn that’s been filled with tension, longing, and so much emotional depth.
If I could give this book more than 5 stars I would, this debut novel is the first one that I’ve read that I have ever wanted to give more than 5 stars.
If you haven’t read this one yet, then you really need to pick this one up and read it ASAP or at least get it on your TBR ASAP!
I can’t wait for the next book in this series; I just can’t wait to see what happens next. And I am really looking forward to reading what Alexis Graham writes next, if this is what she puts out as her debut, I can’t wait to see what she writes next.
My favorite quotes from Love Blackout are:
(As usual I can’t pick just one, I loved this book far too much.)
"You scramble every thought in my head. You walk into a room, and you demand my undivided attention just by being there. I'm in a goddamn blackout, and nothing exists except for you."
‘…thankful Jake is nothing more than a stranger.’
“For what it’s worth, you might not make time for that dating shit, but there’s not a man on this planet who wouldn’t give you anything you wanted in a dress like this.”
“I’m in a goddamn blackout, and nothing exists except for you.”
‘As I watch her red hair rustling in the wind, I realise I might be in love with her.’
I've never wanted anything the way I want this.
But he's a f***ing human being. And people make mistakes. It's what you do in the aftermath of those mistakes that defines who you are as a person."
“I hope you’re not tired. Because I’ve got a lot of ideas right now, and none of them involve sleep.”
