Synopsis:
Being a Sinclair isn’t easy. Kady’s life is often controlled by her father, curated by PR people, and otherwise dissected by the public. So when her dad promises her to a pack, despite not wanting to ever bond, she becomes desperate and fake dates the worst pack on campus. However, while she’s fighting to gain her freedom, she meets the Valen pack, and all those things she’s always tried to avoid—a pack, alphas, bonding—come knocking.
Thoughts:
I’m so happy to be back at Scent Valley University! I really enjoyed the first book in this series, Bonds and Blooms, and really loved the little sneak peeks of Faye and her pack in this one! Kady Sinclair is one of the Stella sorority omegas we meet in book one, and I was really eager to see what she was going to do with her father’s forced engagement!
Kady is an independent, over achieving, boss babe omega that doesn’t want to lose her freedom by getting a pack. However, maybe what she needs are partners that will support her, not stifle her. There are also some interesting family dynamics between her and her ultra famous/ultra wealthy father, which added to the overall conflict. Kady’s desperation to remain unattached was commendable, but at times frustrating.
Pack Valen was a lot of fun. There’s Hale, the leader, that’s trying to find balance after inheriting his father’s legacy, Calder, the alpha that took a job that was all but promised to Kady, Ezra, the severely commitment phobic professor, and Riven, the sweetest alpha imaginable. Their dynamic as a pack is a little confusing, but they all love and support each other, which was very sweet, specifically concerning Riven and his neurodivergence.
The romance portion is what I would describe as medium-fast burn physical relationship, but slow burn feelings. I wish there had been more time for emotional development between Kady and her pack in the last third. I enjoyed the time she got to spend with each of them in the later part of the book (their dates were cute).
This story started out with a bang, and I wasn’t expecting all of the angst, but I was living for the drama at the start. The first 40% was really engaging, and I binged it quickly. However, at times it did feel a little drawn out. Also, I wish there had been more time at the end to see the Valen pack together. It felt like a lot of their issues remained unresolved, and parts of the story feel very incomplete:
• To me, the final resolution with Ezra didn’t feel adequate. I’m not sure he did enough to prove himself to Kady, or to me.
• I wish more had been said about Hale and the “family business vs veterinary school” conversation
• While I can appreciate that Kady wanted things to go slowly, because she never made a bold decision/declaration, their love story doesn’t feel complete. If there had been more time devoted to their emotional relationship, maybe she would have gotten to the same level as the guys, and it wouldn’t feel so up in the air.
